LUTHER:  In Morris [Otsego Co. NY] July 23, Mr. Moses H. Luther aged 72 years and 7 months.

Last Wednesday at his residence on Grove Street, Mr. Moses H. Luther died.  He had not been feeling as well as usual the Sunday before and several times during the day took morphine, as was his custom when unwell.  He accidently took an overdose and soon lost consciousness.  It was so long before he could be aroused and being in a very weak state, it was impossible for his physician to save his life.  Mr. Luther has been a resident of this village about 30 years. during the last ten years of his life he had been continually failing, suffering from palsy and probably would not have lived a great while, even if he had recovered from this last prostration, being over 70 years of age.  He leaves a wife in this village, two sons, G.R. Luther in Iowa and W.H. Luther in Wisconsin, and one daughter in Cincinnatus, Cortland County [NY].

Death

The following particulars of the recent child murder at Richfield Springs [Otsego Co. NY] were furnished us by Coroner Robinson.  James Kenyon is an Englishman, aged about 54 years, of rather intemperate habits.  Five years ago, while laboring under an attack of delirium tremens, he attempted suicide by cutting his throat but unfortunately did not succeed.  Last week, he was at work in a hop yard in Richfield, showing a disposition to assault another person employed in the same yard.  Word was sent to Almon Ames, overseer of the poor of Richfield, who had previously had Kenyon in charge, that he must take him in custody.  On Monday morning last Mr. Ames took the fellow home with him and thought he would set him at work on his own place.  Mr. A.'s son Calvin was there with his wife and an only child, a boy just a year old.  Kenyon was left alone in the house with the two women and this child, when he seized upon the latter and by repeated blows on the floor killed it.  The skull was badly broken.  This occurred soon after he came to the house. The Coroner's jury rendered a verdict of "willful murder."  It is hardly necessary to add that Kenyon is, or pretends to be, deranged. That he is possessed of a temper the most ugly and devilish is very evident.  Freeman's Journal

At Gilboa Schoharie County [NY] on the 5th inst. of typhoid fever Robert Weismer aged 52 years.

Mr. W. was one of the oldest and most respected residents of Gilboa.  For years he carried on an extensive business and was well and widely known as a man of the strictest integrity and most honorable principles. Few men in the town commanded more respect or had more ardent and devoted friends.  In all the relations of life, either in his business walks or in his family circle, he was distinguished for his excellent qualities.  His death is a severe loss to the town, and a painful affliction to a large and interesting family, some of whom are now prostrated by the same disease which caused his death.  May God in his wisdom lay his healing hand upon the bereaved sufferers and spare them to offer consolation and support to the sorrowing widow and the youthful members of the broken flock.

Our "elegant" friend, Elliot Danforth Esq. of Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] perpetrated the following in his 4th of July speech at Sidney Plains [Delaware Cop. NY]:  "Five years ago today on the village green in your sister village, Bainbridge, I delivered an oration which resulted in my leading to the marriage altar, within six months from that time, one of Chenango's fairest daughters.  I mention this as a Fourth of July incident, which in my history at least, will probably never be repeated. That was a union of hands and a union of hearts.  Today we are to speak of a union of States."

Deaths

Henry P. Skinner for some ten years past a businessman here, died of scarlet fever Sabbath noon.  For a few years past, he had been of delicate constitution, and it required only slight disease to produce death. The funeral Tuesday afternoon was in charge of the Masonic Order, and representatives were present from neighboring lodges. The fire department and Dakin rifle association also turned out as organizations.  Mr. Skinner leaves a wife and three children to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. As an enterprising upright businessman, he will be greatly missed.

Harry Heath a farmer living near Sidney Plains [Delaware Co. NY] was found dead yesterday in the hay field. As he was alone at the time of his death, the cause is as yet unknown.  It is thought to be a case of sunstroke.

Judge Paddock, of Malone [Franklin Co. NY], who occasionally visits at Mr. Mears's, lost a twelve-year-old son, Henry [Paddock] by drowning Tuesday.  Fred, another son, was severely injured a few days since by falling form a tree.

FROST:  George Frost who resides near Clinton [Oneida Co. NY] attended a party on Wednesday evening of last week at the residence of John G Phillips of Feder St. in this village [Oneida, Madison Co. NY], was taken ill the same night and died the following Monday.  His body was taken to Utica [Oneida Co. NY] yesterday (Wednesday) for interment.

CURTIS:  Madison, Madison Co. NY:  The remains of the late Isaac Curtis Esq. will be brought here on Tuesday of the present week for interment from Utica [Oneida Co. NY] where he had spent much of his time for the last few years of his life.  Mr. Curtis was a brother of Uri Curtis and Allen Curtis, Esqrs. and spent most of his early life here, and for many successive years held the office of constable and collector and was considered a faithful and efficient officer.  Never a farthing stuck to his fingers not his own all through his official career.  He subsequently became the proprietor of the Stage House, as the hotel was then called, and was extensively known all through the Chenango and Oriskany Valleys and held the office of deputy postmaster for many years while keeping the hotel.  He was of the Democratic school fo Politics.

VAN VALKENBURGH:  Chittenango, Madison Co. NY:  Again, death has entered our community and taken from our midst one of our most prominent citizens.  Several days since the deceased had an apoplectic attack, which resulted in his death Thursday, 6th inst.  Mr. [Peter] Van Valkenburgh represented this Assembly District in the Assembly at one time and acted as justice of the Peace one term in this town.   His death following so closely that of his son-in-law, Robert Stewart, invests the event with additional solemnity and teaches the lesson of the frailty of life and the necessity of keeping the lamps trimmed and burning. The funeral took place at the Reformed Church last Sunday at 11 o'clock A.M.

News Items

Mrs. Margaret Salisbury wife of Daniel Salisbury, of this town [Erieville, Madison Co. NY], was taken to the lunatic asylum at Utica [Oneida Co. NY] on Friday last.  Her unfortunate condition excites the sympathy of all who know her.  While there I saw Preston  Hill, who went from this neighborhood nearly a year ago to that institution.  He was then a raving maniac, and if he is anything else now it is because he is more demented.  I am told that a correspondent of the Oneida Dispatch of last week stated that Mr. Hill went to the asylum sane upon all subjects but one, and that was in relation to his financial embarrassments.  Mr. Hill was, when taken to Utica, and is now insane on all subjects.  He will soon be numbered among the incurables and taken to the poorhouse at Eaton Village [Madison Co. NY], unless his wealthy relatives will lend a helping hand to help support one of their own kin who for many years and until deprived of his reason, toiled by night and day to gain means that he might live independent of relatives. But, alas, he failed and it remains to be determined where and by whom he shall be supported the remainder of his life.  All I can say about it is, God have mercy on the poor; the rich can get office and steal a living not only for themselves and families, but Mr. Duffy thinks they were providing for their horses when they stole forty bushels of his oats a few nights since.

Chittenango, Madison Co. NY:  A man by the name of May, having married and resided here for some time, had his domestic happiness somewhat marred on Saturday of last week by the appearance of a former wife.  She entered a complaint with Squire Barker, who issued a warrant, whereupon our attentive constable, A.P. Bellinger, took the man in charge.  He was then arranged before the Squire, plead guilty, and on further inquiries he stated that he had married the second wife knowing that his first wife was living, but wished an examination, in order to state his reasons for abandoning his first wife, which was that she had turned him out of the house, but as this excuse did not lessen the crime, he was sent to Morrisville to await the action of the Grand jury.  So says the Times.

Deaths

On Wednesday last, Frederick Hotchkiss, Esq. of Windsor in this county [Broome Co. NY], was drowned in attempting to cross the Hockanum Creek, a short distance west of Windsor village.  Mr. H. left home with his horses and wagon, accompanied by a young man in his employ, to visit a back farm and had to cross this stream, which was much swollen and rapid.  As Mr. H. approached the stream, he remarked that he had often crossed when the water was as high as it then was. The bridge had been rendered impassable by a previous freshet.  One end had fallen, and the timbers rested in the bed of the stream.  He drove his team past the center of the stream, when he unexpectedly found a channel recently cut by the water, so deep that his horses sprang suddenly back, refusing to pass and turned up the stream.  The current at this moment while the wagon was cramped swept off the box and carried Mr. H. from his seat down the stream.  The young man sprang from the wagon onto the timbers of the bridge and as Mr.  H. passed from under the bridge he caught him on the lower side, but from fear or want of strength, he released his hold and left Mr. H. to pass on with the current.  Mr. H. was in his eightieth year and had recently received an injury which deprived him of the free use of his limbs, or we doubt not he would have saved himself.

He was a man of great moral worth, combining remarkable energy of character with unbending integrity, fervent piety, and talents above mediocrity.  He was a resident of the state of Connecticut, till he arrived at the age of about 60, where he shared largely in the public confidence and esteem and was for many years a member of the legislature of that state.  He has ever borne an unsullied character and discharged with fidelity the duties of all the relations in life he has sustained.  He has been from early life an active and faithful member of the Presbyterian church and contributed largely to all benevolent causes.  His loss will be severely felt, not only by his numerous relatives and friends but the church and society.

At four o'clock on yesterday morning, as the mail coach from Elmira [Chemung Co. NY] was coming in and when crossing, one mile from this village, the low ground between the bridges at Canewana which had been overflowed from the heavy rain that had fallen on the day and night previous, it was swept by the current from the track and out of five individuals that were on board, all perished but one. The mails were saved though considerably damaged, as was also one horse and the coach.

The names of the unfortunate individuals, as far as we have been able to learn, are as follows:  Truman F. Rose, whose friends, it appears from papers found in his trunk, reside in Exeter, Otsego Co. [NY]; A Mr. Conklin, whose mother is a resident of Ulster, Bradford Co. Pa; Thomas Bowen, the driver, who recently resided in Mount Upton, Chenango Co. [NY]; and a colored man by the name of Isaac Nathans from Elmira where we understand he has a wife.  Since writing the above, the body of the colored man has been found and taken by the colored people of our village to be buried this afternoon.  Many of our citizens are engaged in searching for the bodies of the remaining three unfortunate individuals.  From the best information we can get, all of them were young men, from 20 to 25 years of age, cut off in the prime of life and have left their afflicted parents and friends to mourn their untimely loss.  Owego Gazette.

Another Revolutionary Veteran Gone.  In the town of Conklin, Broome County, N.Y. on Thursday the 23d of April, Hon. John Conklin aged 90 years, lacking 14 days.  Judge Conklin died of disease of the heart but at an advanced age to which few individuals arrive.  During his long life he maintained his integrity and was esteemed and beloved by his fellow men.  For fifty years he was a worthy member of the Presbyterian Church, and six years he served his country faithfully in the war of the Revolution.

Abigail Whittlesey (Camp) Noble

St. Matthew's Church, Unadilla [...unreadable...] and yet very beautiful funeral ceremony on Monday evening last.  Many people gathered there to pay a last tribute of respect to an old friend and neighbor, Mrs. Abigail W. Noble who died in this village on Sunday, July 13th, after a very painful illness.

The Episcopal service faultlessly rendered the time, the place and the occasion seemed suited to each other.

It was fitting that at sunset of a midsummer day, under a clear sky, amid the singing of birds, in an atmosphere filled with the voices of all living things that spoke of joy and hope and endless life, an old woman who believed in immortality and that at the call of her Savior, she would come again from the dead clothed with life eternal, should be laid to rest in the grateful shade and keeping of the much loved church.

All who knew Mrs. Noble in her last years were surprised at the vivacity and clearness of her mind, at the kindliness of her disposition, at her open-handed charity, as if the world was hers to command, and at the vigor of an intellect which time seemed incapable of abating. To such she seemed a remarkable woman.

But to those who knew her in years ago, in the prime of womanhood, when she was the center of a large social circle, and the brightest intellectual found within it, blest with a husband and a family of beautiful children, whom she worshipped when at her home, with all the advantages that wealth and place could [...unreadable...] charming hospitality to all her friends, she was a remarkable woman indeed.

And when in later years, afflictions came without stint or measure and husband and children, all of whom "in the order of nature should have survived her," were taken one by one away and she, the proud and self-reliant woman, patiently bore every sorrow as having been sent by One in whose mercy she trusted, who gave and had a right to take away, and so believing and trusting, and profiting by affliction her bright temper and sunny disposition asserted themselves and shone bright and clear above the gloom of all her grief.  She was still more remarkable.

Mrs. Noble was born at Oswego, NY October 1808.  She was the daughter of William and Abigail Whittlesey Camp. She was married to Judge Charles C. Noble of this village.  She was of a family of rare personal gifts and intellectual distinction.  She was a sister of the well-known lawyer, George Sidney Camp, deceased.  Only two sisters survive her, Mrs. Storrs of Owego and Mrs. Jared O. Gregory of Madison, Wisconsin.

She was a large hearted, great minded, thoughtful woman.  Her self-reliance and positive ideas sometimes made her seem peculiar, but no one who knew her ever thought of attributing any act of hers to a base or unworthy motive.

She was laid to her rest by kindly hands, and as a former pastor committed her body to her last resting place of earth which her care had tended for many long years because it held treasures which she fondly thought did not belong to it.  The tear on many a cheek told in what esteem she was held by men and women who had long known her and felt the gracious encouragement of her unselfish friendship.

Another Revolutionary Soldier gone!  At Andes, in this county [Delaware Co. NY] on the -?- inst. Jehu Burr Esq. in the 82nd year of his age.

On the afternoon of the 8th instant, John Terry aged about five years, was drowned in the floom to the clothing works at Halcott's ville, in this county [Delaware Co. NY].  He was an active and intelligent boy and only son of Mr. Charles Terry, Merchant of that place.  He had probably been in the water about an hour before he was discovered when resuscitation was attempted but without effect.

HASKELL:  On Monday afternoon the 31st ult.  Mr. Horace Haskell of Eaton Village [Madison Co. NY] died at Richardson's(?) Hotel in Morrisville [Madison Co. NY], very suddenly. Mr. Haskell had been on a visit to a relative a short distance west of that place and was waiting the arrival of the stage for Eaton.  After remaining in the bar room for some time, he went out to the barn, where he was found a short time after lying on the floor, life nearly extinct.  The deceased was about 80 years of age and had been in feeble health for some time past.

The citizens of this village [Hamilton, Madison Co. NY] have been greatly afflicted of late by the frequent visits of the Pale Horse and his Rider.  His coming was not expected, and his work was quickly done.  He leaves in his flight blasted hopes and bleeding hearts.  First, Nov. 30, Minnie A. [Shaw] daughter of L.S. and Sarah Shaw, aged 2 years and 2 months.  This is the third child these parents have buried.  Next Dec. 1st, Frank M. [Yale] infant son of Albert and Hannah Yale, aged 4 months.  Mr. Yale was absent from home on business and returned to find his child cold in death's embrace, his little girl very sick, and companion in deep sorrow.  Last, and seemingly the most severe, Dec. 13th, Emeline M. [Pearsons] daughter of Charles and Mary A. Pearsons, aged 5 years and 7 months.  She was sick only two days. About the hour of her death, their little boy sickened, and after three days of suffering, died, Frank H. [Pearsons] aged 1 year and 3 months.  Thus have these parents in a few hours been bereft of all their precious children. In the midst of our holiday happiness, stern death [made] his unwelcome presence, by taking from among us a very estimable young lady, wife of our stage proprietor, Mr. F. Deo.  She died of typhoid fever, after an illness of only two weeks and leaves, beside her husband, an interesting little daughter aged four years, to mourn her loss.  Then again on Christmas night, an elderly lady named Snyder, died rather suddenly after a protracted illness of several months. She was an old and respected citizen, leaving many descendants in this place and vicinity.

FISH:  In this village [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY] on the 24th inst. Mrs. Myra A. [Fish] wife of Dr. M.H. Fish, aged 30 years.

The painful task devolves upon us of recording the death of Mrs. Fish, wife of Dr. M.H. Fish, who, after a protracted illness, breathed her last a little after twelve o'clock on Saturday of last week, at the early age of 30 years.  Mrs. Fish who maiden name was Myra A. Cole, was born in Richfield, Otsego County [NY].  She was married and came to Sherburne in 1872, where she has resided up to the time of her death.  She leaves one child, a bright boy about 4 years old, too young as yet to feel the loss of a watchful and tender mother.  The deceased was widely known and highly esteemed for her modest and amiable deportment and her loss will be sadly felt by a large circle of attached friends.  In her short life she had faithfully fulfilled the duties of daughter, wife and mother.

At the early morning hour of half past seven on Tuesday last, a large concourse of citizens assembled at her late residence to join in the funeral service and escort the remains and the mourning friends to the depot, where they were embarked on the morning train for Cedarville, Herkimer County [NY], the burial place of Dr. Fish's family.  The warm sympathies of the many friends of the deceased followed the mourning party in their journey to the distant burial place.  On their arrival at Cedarville they were met and followed to the place of burial by a large number of inhabitants. There were no services at the grave, as the full burial service of the Episcopal Church had already been pronounced here by Rev. T.L. Randolph, Rector of Christ church.

WILBUR:  In this village [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY] on the 24th inst. Cora Belle Wilbur daughter of Mr. J.B. Wilbur, aged 8 years, 7 months and 25 days.

Little Cora Belle was a child of remarkable intelligence and sweetness of disposition.  In her Sunday school class and at school she was a general favorite and loved by all.  Her schoolmates attended her funeral in a body and during the services their deep grief was sadly expressed.  At the cemetery when the coffin was lowered into the grave, each one of the scholars passed by and dropped a bouquet of flowers upon it, forming a very impressive scene.  As the flowers wither in her grave, so shall the bright spirit of our little friend blossom in the world of love.

BAGG:  Mrs. Henry H. Bagg of Junius, N.Y. [Seneca Co.], sister of Mr. Charles S. Waters of this village [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY] died on Wednesday, May 7, aged 56 years.  Her remains were carried to Eaton, Madison Co. [NY] for interment. Deceased was formerly a resident of this place, where she had many friends who deeply mourn her loss.

GREENE:  William Moore and Thomas Greene of Hamilton [Madison Co. NY] met with an accident last week that proved fatal to the latter.  They were on their way from Clinton home.  When near Deansville the team became frightened and began to run.  Neither were in the wagon at the time.  Mr. Greene caught hold of the end board and retained his hold until the team went so fast he dared not let go.  Presently the board came out and Mr. Greene fell to the ground.  He was conveyed home next day unable to speak.  He lingered until Saturday night when he died. a wife and eight children are left to mourn his loss.

Mrs. Samuel Wheeler died on Thursday night last, surviving her husband only about two weeks.  Her disease was pneumonia.

In Preston [Chenango Co. NY] Feb. 14th, Mrs. Rhoda Janes widow of Sidney Janes, aged 66 years.

In New York, Feb. 11th, Lot C. Clark Esq. formerly of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] aged 51 years.

Thomas S. Purple, Esq. well-known in Chenango County [NY] died February 14th at his late residence in Windsor, Broome County [NY], at the ripe old age of 84 years.  He was born in Connecticut in 1795 and removed to Chenango County [NY] when a child with his parents.  In 1829 he married Rebecca, daughter of Andrew Race, of Greene, and about two years later removed to Smithville [Chenango Co. NY] where he lived many years, much respected and often holding positions of trust, being elected Justice of the Peace several terms, and at one time Supervisor of the town.  All of his family, his wife, three sons and three daughters, survive him.  He died of no particular disease, but a gradual decline in old age.  Oxford times

Mrs. William Barber, sister of Mrs. George Boughton, who has been suffering for the past year with a tumor, died at her home in Triangle [Broome Co. NY], on the 17th inst.  The family are deeply afflicted. The young man Ray Dillenbeck, who was killed at Whitney's Point [Broome Co. NY] lately, was a son-in-law.

Mr. Charles English who resided near Triangle [Broome Co. NY] with his father and who was in the woods on Thursday last with the latter felling timber, was struck by a falling tree and instantly killed.  A high wind was blowing at the time, and it is probable that the tree fell unexpectedly.  He leaves a wife and one child.

On the same day occurred the death of Cora Wilber, daughter of John B. Wilber of this village [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY].  Cora was a very promising child for one so young and her death is deeply felt by all who knew her.

In this town [Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY] on the 23d of July, Mrs. Margaret Walling wife of Mr. Samuel Walling, in the 67th year of her age.  She has suffered much for four months, but has at length fallen, and paid the debt the living owe.

News Item

A few weeks since, we mentioned a case of suspected poisoning in the town of Middletown [Delaware Co. NY].  A Mr. Herrington, after being sick some days, died and was buried.  Circumstances occurred which excited suspicions that there had been foul play.  The body was disinterred and a postmortem examination held, the result of which was the arrest and detention of Mrs. Herrington until an analysis of parts of the body could be had.  Parts of the body, stomach, intestines, &c., were went to a competent chemist, who, we understand, found poison diffused through the system in sufficient quantities to cause death.  Mrs. Herrington, wife of deceased, was brought to the jail in this village [Delhi, Delaware Co. NY] on Saturday, the 21st of July to await the action of the Grand jury. The parties had been married but a few months and came from Pennsylvania. In Milford [Otsego Co. NY] August 4th of Diarrhea, Mary Roselia [Quackenbush] daughter of James and Sarah Jane Quackenbush, aged 3 years 4 months and 10 days.

On Monday of last week, says the Delaware Gazette Enoch Knapp son of Abram Knapp, residing at Shenandoah, in East Fishkill [Dutchess Co. NY] was killed by lightning.  He and a smaller brother were plowing corn when a shower came up and while the brother ran to the house, Enoch took refuge under an apple tree, where he was found soon after the shower, with his clothes torn, his head bleeding and he dead.  He was 17 years old.

Coroner Robinson held a postmortem examination on the body of Julia Baker of Burlington [Otsego Co. NY] on Tuesday the 7th inst.  The verdict of the jury, after hearing the testimony of Drs. Sprague and Lathrop, and others, was promptly rendered that her death was the result of a fatal disease and we are assured that the examination established the truth of the finding beyond doubt.  Freeman's Journal

When the census was taken five years ago, the population of the town [Unadilla, Otsego Co. NY] was 2722.  since that time a portion of the town has been added to the town of Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY], decreasing the number of inhabitants in the town of Unadilla about 150.  The population of the town, exclusive of the village is 1900; population of the village, 816; total 2716, a gain of 144 in 5 years.  The number of deaths in the town during the past year is 26.  The oldest person in the town is Mrs. Anna Wilde who was 100 years old at her last birthday.  Unadilla Times

News Item

After Jimmy Stevens, the boy killed by lightning on Tuesday, was taken home and while the corpse was being prepared by the undertaker for burial, a picture resembling a photograph of a butternut limb came out on his back very distinctly and stayed there.  It is certain that this print was not upon his back before he was taken home.  Photographing in this manner is often performed by lightning.  Jimmy's back was bare when he was killed and the bush which was photographed upon his skin was just over his bare back.  Binghamton Republican

For several years he preached in Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY] The presents at the silver wedding were numerous and valuable.

Golden Wedding:  On Tuesday evening, Oct. 23d, Mr. and Mrs. David E. Whitcomb of the town [Morris Otsego Co. NY] celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.  A large company of friends gathered under the parental roof; among them were four who attended their wedding fifty years ago, including Mrs. Horace Harrison, of this village, who was bridesmaid at that time. The number of guests present was about ninety and many and sincere were the congratulations offered and old friends who had not been brought together for years, here met and renewed former friendship.  The guests after the first formality had worn off, were as social as bees, and all "went merry as the marriage bell."  At about ten o'clock the company gathered in the spacious hall and sitting room when Rev. H.H. Fisher of Maryland and Rev. C. Ayer of this village read each a poem expressive of their sentiments for the occasion, after which the doxology "Praise God from whom all blessings flow," &c. was sung by all present and prayer was offered, when the guests were seated for refreshments.  No presents were expected, but notwithstanding this, friends presented a number of beautiful and useful presents and quite a number of gold pieces were found on the table in neat white envelopes for Mr. and Mrs. Whitcomb, for which they request us through these columns to return to the donors their most grateful acknowledgements, assuring them that these mementos of friendship will ever be cherished by them as gifts from esteemed friends and neighbors. While looking upon the family group that night, we were reminded of a poem we once read which we are sure must have been designed for such occasions.

"I saw her and I loved her, / I sought her and I won / Four dozen pleasant summers / And more since then have run, / And the voices of our sons, / Now standing at her side, / Remind me of the autumn / When she became my bride."

In South New Berlin [Chenango Co. NY] Tuesday Oct. 10th, Mrs. Esther Chamberlain wife of the well-known Rev. J.H. Chamberlain took her departure from the shore of time to the land of immortal glory.  This mother in Zion has for a long time been a resident of New Berlin and a member of the Baptist church.  Owing to her warm and generous nature, her kind and loving disposition, her large and sympathizing heart, her name has been associated with all that is noble in the qualities of the true Christian.  Her loss is universally mourned, yet we know that although we may weep, yet angels rejoice in welcoming to their number another "who has gone up out of tribulation, and has washed her robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."

We learn that Mr. Willard Hopkins died suddenly at his residence in the town of Laurens [Otsego Co. NY] on Tuesday, Oct. 24th of heart disease.

News Item

Great fears are entertained as to the safety of Rev. John T. Goodrich, formerly of Philadelphia, Pa. but who, with his family, have been visiting numerous relatives in and about Guilford [Chenango Co. NY].  He was supposed to have been in Chicago during the recent conflagration and has not since been heard from.  Two gentlemen have started in search of him.  His family are almost frantic.

In Plymouth [Chenango Co. NY] on Wednesday the 17th ult. Mrs. Harriet Per Lee wife of Walter Per Lee, Esq.

A man named Conrad Valhyder supposed to be about 80 years of age, came to his death on the night of the 10th ult. by freezing.  The deceased lived by himself in a small house in Hancock in this county [Delaware Co. NY] and had been for a long time addicted to intemperate habits.  He had the afternoon previous to his death purchased a bottle of rum and returned to his residence as usual, where it is supposed he drank freely from his bottle, became intoxicated, and laid himself down before the fireplace, in which position he was found on the morning of the 11th, a frozen corpse.  Delaware Gazette

Death

A boy by the name of William Howland, who lived in Delhi, Delaware Co. [NY] lost his life last week by the following imprudent act:  Leading a young horse to water, which was so spirited as to be almost unmanageable, by one of his strength he tied the halter round his wrist to make sure his held.  The horse took fright dragged him to the ground and so badly injured him that he lived but one day.  Let this sad calamity be a warning to youngsters whose carelessness and ignorance of danger would not be healthy.

The last Oxford Times (having mislaid the paper, we are unable to copy the article itself) gives the particulars of the death of a young man, a resident of Smithville [Chenango Co. NY] named Consor, who was found dead in the woods on Sunday of last week.  It seems that on the Friday previous, he started out on a hunting excursion and after following a fox until afternoon and having driven the animal into a hole, he called at a house and borrowed an axe, saying that he would return it in a short time.  Not complying with his promise, and failing to return home, a search was made for him on the day on which he was found. When discovered he was dead, lying with his face to the earth. The cause that led to his death is left to conjecture alone.  Appearances indicated that he had become lost, and fatigue and hunger may have proved fatal to the poor boy.  His dog was by his side.  It is said that he was buried without an inquest being held on the body.

In this town [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] on the 11tyh inst. Elizabeth [Hatch] wife of Oliver W. Hatch and daughter of Richard and Catharine Lewis.

One day last week, the house of a Mr. Perkins in the town of Pitcher [Chenango Co. NY] took fire and owing to a quantity of flax deposited in a room, the flames spread with such fearful rapidity, that all attempts to extinguish the fire proved futile.  Mr. Perkins went round his house and opened a window for the purpose of rescuing a bed.  He ran his head in, seized the clothes and there remained unmovable.  He was seen by an individual a short distance off, who hastened to his relief & when he pulled him back, the flames completely enveloped his head and shoulders, shooting out some six feet. He was dreadfully burnt, insensible and his grasp upon the clothes spasmodic, bringing them away with him, although it required the utmost strength of his deliverer to drag him out of the fire.  He lived three or four days and died seemingly unconscious of his situation. whether he was seized with a fit, or stultified by the atmosphere, has not been determined.  Chenango Telegraph

Rev. Dr. Zachariah Paddock a prominent Methodist divine, died at Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] on the 4th inst.  He was born in Montgomery County [NY]in 1798.

Simon Turner of Preston, Chenango Co. [NY] aged 90 years, was found dead Tuesday afternoon in a small creek at the rear of his residence.

Charles Lawton a resident of this village [Franklin Delaware Co. NY] died very suddenly last Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock p.m.  He had been complaining of severe pain in his stomach and head for a few days yet was not considered dangerously ill.  A postmortem examination revealed the fact that his death was caused by an apoplectic shock or fit, causing death in about ten minutes.  The funeral services were largely attended on Sunday last, delegations of Masons being present from all of the adjoining towns.

Ashael Bemiss of this village [Franklin, Delaware Co. NY] formerly of Otego [Otsego Co. NY] was found dead near the residence of H.S. Edwards, one-half mile north of this place, on Monday noon.  Mr. Bemiss had been mowing nearby during the forenoon and was seen to fall and upon reaching him he was dead.  His funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon.
