A five-year-old Walton [Delaware Co., NY] girl lost  her life in the swollen waters of West Brook in that village shortly after 5:30 Wednesday night.  The child, Beverly Wells, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wells, was crossing the Main street bridge with Linda McClenathan, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McClenathan, also of Walton, when the drowning occurred.  She was walking along a retaining wall near the brook when she stumbled and fell into the water.  Mrs. Irving Bullis, who lives near the brook, saw the child fall and summoned her husband.  Mr. Bullis and several other men ran to the bank, but by the time they pulled the girl from the water she was unconscious.  She was taken to the Stevens hospital where Dr. C.G. Gould worked over her for more than an hour in a vain attempt to resuscitate her.  The child's parents were in Binghamton at the time.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Mar. 29, 1945]
