Obituaries (October 14)

 Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] lost another prominent citizen, suddenly, on Friday last, Col. Wm. B. Pellett, Cashier of the Bank of Chenango, fell from his chair while at dinner at the Eagle Hotel and died in about five minutes.  His age was about 67 years, and for more than thirty-five years he had been connected with the Bank of Chenango.  [Bainbridge Republican, Jan. 18, 1873]

About 2 o'clock Monday morning, Cyrus Dimmick, aged some 21 years, son of Francis E. Dimmock, Esq., of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], died suddenly under the following circumstances:  Near 7 o'clock the previous evening, feeling somewhat indisposed and being nervous and restless, he took a dose of Hydrate of Chloral and retired for the night.  Between 11 and 12 his father went to his room and found his son unconscious in a deep stupor, and stertorous breathing apparently in a dying condition  Medical assistance was promptly called but to no purpose, and he died as above stated.  he was not only an only son, but an only child and is spoken of as possessing excellent talent, and many noble qualities of head and heart--Chenango Union  [Bainbridge Republican, Feb. 8, 1873]

On Saturday at about eleven o'clock, Henry Nightingale, of McDonough [Chenango Co., NY]  went out to a barn near his house to do his chores.  Not coming home , late in the forenoon his family sent out to see that the matter was, when he was found insensible, his extremities considerably frozen.  He was at once removed to the house and died in a few moments.  He was about 75 years of age, and it is supposed he had a fit which incapacitated him from returning to the house.  He had resided in McDonough for many years and enjoyed the confidence ad respect of all who knew him.  [Bainbridge Republican, Feb. 8, 1873]
 
The death of Mary A. Elwood, the mother of Attorney Vincent N. Elwood, of Hancock, occurred at Andes [Delaware Co., NY] on July 23, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Addison Liddle, where she had made her home for the past eight years.  She was born April 24, 1854, and her age was 89 years, two months and 29 days.  Burial was in Paige Cemetery at Downsville [Delaware Co., NY].  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Aug. 5, 1943]
 
George Waters, about 70, retired Ontario & Western Railroad man, died of shock Sunday night, following a fall into Chenango Lake, near Norwich [Chenango Co., NY].  The fall was caused by the giving away of an old wooden pier upon which Mr. Waters was standing.  It was reported that Mr. Waters had been under treatment for some time for a heart ailment, and it is believed this ailment coupled with shock, was the cause of death.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Aug. 12, 1943]
 
Edward Cantwell, 46, died suddenly at his home in Margaretville [Delaware Co., NY], Saturday morning of heart trouble from which he had suffered for some time.  When Mrs. Cantwell got up that morning he told her he would remain in bed for a little time, then get up and go overtown for groceries.  When he did not come down after the morning was partly over, Mrs. Cantwell went to his room and found he had passed away.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Aug. 12, 1943]
 
Nelson B. Tompkins, 54, who was born in Margaretville [Delaware Co., NY], but had passed most of his life in Walton and Delhi [Delaware Co., NY].  died at the Meridale creamery in Delhi, Monday from a heart attack.  He had been in the creamery business for his entire life.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Aug. 12, 1943]

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Thursday last, William son of Mr. Hiram Weller, aged 10 months and 10 days.

In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on Saturday last, after a short illness, Mrs. Polly Childs, aged 49 years.

In Richford, Tioga co., [NY] on the 7th inst. after an illness of 5 months, which terminated in consumption, Harmon, son of Mr. Amzi Norton, in the 22d year of his age.  The deceased was a young man of the first respectability, and bid fair to become a useful member of society, and an honest and upright citizen. Throughout a long illness he patiently endured his sufferings, with an apparent willingness to rest his cause with his God.
