Corinne (Hickok) Brodie

Corrine (Hickok) Brodie

News reached Norwich Sunday afternoon of the death the day previous in New York of Mrs. Louis J. Brodie, formerly Miss Corinne Hickok, who was born in Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] about 33 years ago.  After attending the Norwich schools she was graduated from Eastman's Business College at Poughkeepsie in the same class with Mr. Brodie, whom she married after filling for a short time a position in New York.  Mrs. Brodie is well remembered in Norwich where she made her home until her marriage about seven years ago, residing with her mother and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hial Hickok.  She had the rare gift of making friends of all her acquaintances and her early death is deeply deplored by all who knew her.  The sad tidings brought grief to many friends in Norwich, whose sympathy goes out in large measure to her bereaved mother and husband and her grandparents, by whom she is survived.  Burial was made at Danbury, Conn. where her mother now resides.

 

Elman Legrange Andrews

Elman L. Andrews, 86, well-known Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] resident, died Saturday at his home at 86 North Main Street, in that village.  The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the home with the Rev. M. DeForest Lowes officiating.  Burial was made in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton [Chenango Co., NY].  Among those surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nellie Mudge Andrews;  a daughter, Mrs. Nellie A. Wakeman;  two sons, George and Lester Andrews;  14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. 

 

Betsey (King) Hamlin

1830 - 1910

 At her home in Afton [Chenango Co., NY] Wednesday evening, March 16 [1910], Mrs. Betsey King Hamlin departed this life and passed through the pearly gates into the heavenly home.  A few days before her departure she was stricken with pneumonia and notwithstanding medical aid and careful nursing she gradually grew worse until finally the end came.  Mrs. Hamlin was born in the town of Sanford [Broome Co., NY], April 23, 1830 and had she lived a week later would have reached her eightieth year.  She was united in marriage with Mr. W.H. Hamlin about sixty years ago.  The greater part of her life was spent at North Sanford but during the last eighteen years she lived in Bainbridge and Afton.  Deceased was a woman of beautiful character, sweet voiced, gentle and refined, and her quiet, Christian graces will live in the hearts of those who were nearest to her.  She united with the church of Christ and became a follower of Jesus in her girlhood days and was until the end a faithful and consistent Christian in whom it could be seen that she "had been with Jesus and had learned of Him."  Mrs. Hamlin is survived by her husband, W.H. Hamlin, who is now so sadly bereft, and who feels his loss so keenly;  one son, George, of Brooklyn, N.Y.;  two daughters, Mrs. Mary L. Kniskern of Bainbridge and Mrs. V.E. Gregory of Afton;  also three brothers and two sisters, Addison King of North Sanford, John King of China, N.Y., Judson King of Bainbridge, Mrs. Sylvia Fuller of Masonville and Mrs. Augusta Peck of Deposit.  Funeral services were held at her late home in Afton, her pastor, Rev. H.T. Hill officiating.  A quartet from Afton Baptist church had charge of the singing.  The remains were taken to Glenwood cemetery for burial.  The bereaved husband and family have the sincere sympathy of their many friends.

 

Lena Sylva (King) Boone

1946

Mrs. Lena S. King Boone died at the Latrobe Hospital, Latrobe, Pa., February 23, 1946.  Mrs. Boone had been an invalid for many years.  Born in North Sanford, N.Y [Broome Co.].  She was the youngest daughter of Addison and Sylvia King.  She united with the Baptist Church at North Sanford early in life.  She was matron of Practical Bible Training School at Bible School Park, N.Y. for 16 years and later became dietician of Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, N.Y.  In 1917 she married Rev. Clarence E. Boone making their home in Afton, N.Y. and a few years later moving to Baltimore, Md.  The past twelve years they resided on the farm formerly owned by the late John Boone in Ligonier, Pa.  Mrs. Boone’s friendly, helpful disposition endeared her to all  who knew her.  She bore her handicap of invalidism with fortitude.  Mrs. Boone is survived by her husband, two brothers and three sisters:  Mrs. Leroy N. Searles of Binghamton, Andrew H. King, Afton, Jennie King Pendell, Afton, Loura King Yaple, McDonough, N.Y., Homer E. King, Sidney, N.Y.  Also several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services and burial were in Ligonier, Pa.

 

Andrew H. King

Afton Enterprise, October 4, 1962

Andrew H. King, 93, Afton, died at the Wheeler Nursing Home in Greene [Chenango Co., NY] last Friday evening after a long illness.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Philley King, Afton;  two sons, Percy V. King, Kirkwood and Hayes King, Afton;  a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Doris) Blakeslee, Greene;  a sister, Mrs. Jennie King Pendell, Norwich;  four grandchildren;  three great-grandchildren;  also several nieces and nephews.  He was born in North Sanford, N.Y. [Broome Co.], Sept. 27, 1869, son of Addison and Sylvia Jane Andrews King.  He was affiliated with the Methodist Church of Afton and a member of the Afton Masonic Lodge 360, F.&A.M.  The body was removed to the Root Funeral Home, Greene where the funeral was held Monday at 2 p.m.  The Rev. Arthur Smith, pastor of the Congregational Church of Greene officiated.  Burial was in East Side Cemetery, Afton [Chenango Co., NY].
