Dr. Dwight M. Lee, a prominent citizen and leading physician of this village, died suddenly of heart disease at his home on Washington Park [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY] last Saturday, at about 7 o'clock, a.m. Until the evening before his death he was apparently in his usual health and his demise coming so unexpectedly was a terrible blow to his family and friends, and his loss is deeply felt by the entire community. The deceased was the son of Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Hiram Wise Lee, and was born fifty-two years ago the 25th of last January at Georgetown [Madison Co., NY]. He attended the Cincinnatus Academy and when but sixteen years of age entered Hamilton college at Clinton and there received the degree of Bachelor of Arts. During the first years of the war he was attending lectures at the medical college connected with the University of the City of New York and the Albany Medical College and after completing his course at the last named institution in December 1864, he joined the twenty-second New York Volunteers Calvary as assistant surgeon. In August, 1865, he was mustered out and located at Smithville Flats where for two years he practiced his profession, but not meeting with the success that he desired he came to this village in the spring of 1867 and has since been a resident of Oxford. He was one of the best known physicians in the county and was frequently called in consultation with physicians of other towns. He was a frequent attendant at medical associations and was a member of the Chenango County, Central New York and New York State medical societies, and was a member of the board of pension examiners of Chenango county in 1882-4. He took an active interest in the affairs of the village and was several times elected president of the village, and has also held other offices of trust and responsibility. For many years he has been a member of Oxford lodge F.&A.M. Oxford Lodge, R.A.M. and of the Norwich Commandery, K.T. In 1866 he married Miss Elizabeth T Gleason who still survives him. Three children, Charles D., Walter E. and Zada are also left to mourn his loss and the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to those afflicted ones. The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday and consisted of a short service at the house with the Masonic service at the grave in Riverview cemetery [Oxford, NY].
