Charles Hanson Goodwin

Died October 2, 1939, Cooperstown, NY

Charles Hanson [Goodwin], infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Goodwin of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], passed away at the Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown [Otsego Co., NY], Monday evening, Oct. 2, following a short illness of acute meningitis.  Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon. Rev. Theodore Hubbard, assisted by Mrs. Hubbard and her sister of New Berlin conducted the services.  Interment was made in the Oxford cemetery [Chenango Co., NY].  The floral offerings, carried by Dorothy Pfeil and Alliene Hoy were many and beautiful.  Those from a distance who were present to attend the funeral services were Mrs. C.P. Hanson and son Arnold of Onalaska, Wisconsin, mother and brother of  Mrs. Goodwin.

Ethel Goodnow

Died February 20, 1936, Potdsam, NY

Potsdam [St. Lawrence Co., NY]:  Transformed into a human torch when her night clothing caught fire as she stood near a stove to get warm, Miss Ethel Goodnow, 37, of Brasher Falls, R.D.1 [St. Lawrence Co., NY], a school teacher, died Thursday night at Potsdam Hospital.  Miss Goodnow, who had been taking care of her mother, who is ill, arose after retiring and went to the kitchen to get warm. As she stood by the kitchen range, the intense heat from the stove ignited her nightgown.  Almost instantly Miss Goodnow became enveloped in flames.  Her father, James Goodnow, hearing her screams, went to the assistance of his daughter.  He pulled the burning nightgown from his daughter and rolled her in blankets to smother the flames.  Miss Goodnow was unconscious when she was removed to the hospital, death occurring about 24 hours later.  Physicians said she suffered major burns over her entire body.  A school teacher, Miss Goodnow remained at home this term so she might aid her mother.

Darwin E. Goodnow

Died August 6, 1926, New Berlin, NY

Darwin E. Goodnow passed away at his home in this village Friday night, August 6, 1926, at about 12 o'clock, after an illness of long duration.  Darwin E. Goodnow was born in the town of Sherburne, Chenango Co., N.Y., April 9, 1848.  He was the son of Foster Goodnow and Mary Lottridge Goodnow.  When he was about two years old they moved from Sherburne to a farm about one mile from Columbus on the road toward the village mentioned above.  He remained at home until grown to manhood.  Mr. Goodnow was married on December 21st, 1870, to Mariette Haight of Morris.  They spent a few years farming in Columbus, then they moved to the town of Morris to a farm on the main highway between Morris and Gilbertsville where they conducted a general business, remaining at this location until the year 1901 when he sold his farm to Dr. Morris and purchased his present home in South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY] the same year. Twenty-five years of his life have been spent on the farm where he died on August 6th, 1926.  One son Henry H. Goodnow was born to these parents and now lives on the Goodnow homestead at South New berlin. The farm was formerly the Jay Sage homestead.  The deceased is survived by his widow, son and wife, four nephews.

Mariette Haight Goodnow

Died November 5, 1930, New Berlin, NY

Mariette Haight was born June 23, 1847, in the town of Laurens [Otsego Co., NY].  She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David J. Haight, life long residents of the town of Morris.  December 21, 1870, she was united in marriage with Darwin E. Goodnow of Columbus, who passed away about four years ago.  Their early married life was spent in Columbus and Morris, moving from the latter place to the Jay Sage place about thirty years ago, where they resided until the time of their death From early youth she led a faithful Christian life and was devoted to her home and family.  Mrs. Goodnow passed away Nov. 5th. She is survived by one son, Henry H. Goodnow of this place.  Her funeral was held at her late home Saturday, November 8th, Rev. D.H. Woodward officiating. She was laid to rest in Riverside cemetery.
