Herbert E. Ryan

Died July 12, 1942, Norwich, NY

Herbert E. Ryan, well known and highly respected resident of East Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], expired suddenly at his home late Wednesday afternoon.  Mr. Ryan had not been in the best of health for a month, but the end came unexpectedly.  Mr. Ryan was born in East Norwich, Oct. 19, 1888, and had spent his entire life in that community.  He had been a valued employee of the O.&W. railroad for the past 38 years.  The deceased was the son of William M. and Ethel B. (Sliter) Ryan.  There survive his wife, Jessie McCall Ryan, and six children, Thomas W. of East Norwich and P.F.C. James M. of Camp Livingston La., Nellie M. Ryan, Anna C., Isabel G. and Richard A. Ryan, all of East Norwich, also one brother, Robert E. Ryan of East Norwich, two sisters, Mrs. W. Russell Fryover of Sherburne and Mrs. Clarence Thompson of Norwich.  Mr. Ryan was a member of Norwich lodge of Elks, Amicus Aerie of Eagles and the B. of L.F.&E. of which he was president.  He was also a member of the O.&W. Veterans Association.  News of Mr. Ryan's passing was learned with shock by his many friends.  Popular with his associates in railroad circles, Mr. Ryan possessed a pleasing personality and he had the desirable faculty of making friends and keeping them.  He was a leader in his community neighborhood where his counsel was frequently sought.  Mr. Ryan was always among the first to respond when any of his neighbors were in need.  His untimely passing removes one beloved by all who were fortunate to know him.  Funeral services are to be held from the family home in East Norwich Saturday morning at 9:15 and from St. Paul's church at 10 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Father Charles M. Coveny officiating. Burial will be made in St. Paul's cemetery [Norwich, NY].

Dr. Frederick Eugene Roper

Died September 8, 1941, Norwich, NY

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Dr. Frederick Eugene Roper, said to be the oldest practicing physician in the county at the time of his death, passed away suddenly at the Chenango Memorial Hospital early this morning, aged 77 years.  Appearing in his usual health, the deceased, an ardent baseball fan, attended both games of the Norwich - Mt. Upton doubleheader yesterday afternoon at Alumni Field, where he remained until the last player was called out. Returning home shortly after 7 o'clock last night, Dr. Roper went for a walk and upon his return complained of illness.  Dr. George L. Manley was called, and upon arrival ordered Dr. Roper removed to the Chenango Memorial Hospital where he died shortly after. Born in Danby [Tompkins Co., NY], Jan. 20, 1864, Dr. Roper graduated from the Ithaca High School and from the Cleveland Homeopathic Collège in 1886.  He first practiced his profession in Cripple Creek, Colo., and later in Deposit and in 1896 he came to Norwich where he has since carried on a general practice.  For the past 20 years he has been attending physician at the Chenango Valley Home.  He was a member of the Chenango County Medical Society and the staff at the Chenango Memorial Hospital, the State Homeopathic Society, the International Homeopathic Society, and the sons of the American Revolution.  He was also a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Chruch of Norwich, the Norwich Club and the Norwich Lodge of Elks.  He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Lillian Roper, one daughter, Mrs. Franklyn W. Daley of Binghamton, three grandchildren, Reba, Rita and Florence Daley, all of Binghamton, a niece, Mrs. Robert Clark of Valley Stream, L.I. and two nephews Dr. Kent Roper of New Haven, Con., and Luther Roper of Clifton Springs. There will be prayer service at the family residence, 5 Henry street, Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with funeral service at Emmanuel Church at 2 o'clock, the rector, the Rev. Lloyd S. Charters, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery [Norwich, NY].

Dr. Roper was known to hundreds in Norwich.  He was the trusted family physician and friend to many and genuine sorrow stirred the hearts of Norwich residents when his demise was learned.  Dr. Roper carried on a general medical practice and did not aspire toward the surgical trend.  He was faithful to every trust imposed upon him by his patients, gave untiringly of his skill and devotion to the ill, leaving behind him a record that few equal.  he had a long career of service in administering to the ill of Norwich and vicinity and he went about his work in a dignified and wholesome manner without thought of personal sacrifice or future reward.  He was quiet and modest and was held in the highest respect. For more than a score of years Dr. Roper faithfully served as physician at the Chenango Valley Home.  His visits there brought cheer to many of the aged residents of that home and his death will be mourned at that pace as in all other walks of life in this area.

Lily B. Roper

Died December 3, 1941, Norwich, NY

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Following two months of illness, Mrs. Lily B. Roper, widow of the late Dr. F.E. Roper, died at the Chenango Memorial Hospital about noon today.  Born Jan. 11, 1871, at Pennellvile, Oswego County, the deceased came to Norwich at the age of 10 and during most of her life had been a resident here, although she did reside in Boston for some time after graduating from the old Norwich Academy. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Chruch, a charter member of the Chenango County Home Bureau and was a member of the Executive Committee of that organization at the time of her death. Since 1895 she had been a member of the Willing Workers Circle of the King's Daughters, and had served as treasurer of the Chenango County King's Daughters. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Netre Vous Club of Norwich, and a former secretary of the Women's National Homeopathic League. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Franklin Daley of Binghamton, and three cousins, Mrs. Walter A. Stevens and Mrs. Francis Stevens Grant, both of Williamstown and T.M. Stevens of Pennellville. The funeral wil be held from the former residence on Henry Street Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock and from Emmanuel Church at 2:30, the rector, the Rev. Lloyd S. Charters officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery [Norwich, NY]
