Richfield Springs, Otsego Co. NY:  Dr. Horace Mauley known as one of the most noted characters in this county [Otsego Co. NY], died at Richfield Springs on the 22d ult aged 87 years.  Bailey's History of Richfield says of him:

Horace Mauley was born in the town of Norway, Herkimer County, N.Y. March 28th, 1791; followed the ordinary employments of his father's farm and attended school until the age of nineteen, when he commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Ayres of East Canada Creek, town of Manheim [Herkimer Co. NY], which he continued several years and finally graduated at Fairfield Medical College in the winter of 1814-15.  He served for a time in the army as Assistant Surgeon.

In the year 1816 Dr. Mauley located at Monticello in the town of Richfield for the practice of medicine and surgery.  He devoted himself to his profession with characteristic zeal and assiduity and in a few months found himself enjoying the rich reward of an extensive and lucrative business.  In 1820, he bought an acre of land embracing what is now the Manley Spring on the ground of the Spring House for which he paid $75 and erected a dwelling home for his family.  He proceeded at once to prepare the Spring for public use.  the Spring soon began to attend public attention, but the duties of his profession requiring his attention, the doctor sold his property, including the Spring, to a Mr. Chase and purchased the land recently occupied by him, a short distance to the east of the Spring on the south side of Main Street.  He leaves one son and three daughters.
