Why should you mourn, the victory is won / Before the conflict is begun, / And to perhaps while you despair / Your Maker saw some tempting snare; / Some pending storm of rain and / The mortal joys of your dear friend, / Then why should you not acquiesce / In all that precaution who would bless and house the plant, his tender flower, / Before the furies of the shower, / Before the raging tempests pour / Or lightnings fly or thunder roar; / His quiet bark is now at rest

Then calm the tempest in your breast; / Ye mourning friends then be resigned, / Gird up the loins of the troubled mind, / Perform your master's will divine, / That you in brighter beams may shine; / Doubtless it must have pierced the heart / To have beheld the mourners' part, / And bid the breathless one farewell, / To moulder in his lonely cell

Wife, mother, sister, more bereaved / Than one is able to conceive, / To resign him to his quiet bed / In cold recesses of the dead, / He who once bid fair to be / Delightful to his family / Will be no more their eyes delight, / But now looks doleful to the sight, / Without a sympathetic concern, /Who could so mournful story learn,

The sands of life how quickly run, / In the prime of life himself cut down, / Length of days appear'd to stamp / His sanguine face the brightest lamp / When to an unknown hand descends / And for his life with him contends / His mortal hill appeared so strong, / He solaced himself in living long.

BLACKMAN:  Justus Blackman, one of the oldest inhabitants of the town of Pharsalia [Chenango Co., NY] died on the 14th of last June, aged 89 years.

He was born in Andover, Conn.   Fifty years ago, he came to this County, and settled in the town of Plymouth.  He lived there until twenty-nine years ago, when the "dread monster" entered his home circle and took therefrom the joy and companion of his bosom.  He then went to Pennsylvania, where he remained seven years, and then came to Pharsalia, where he has lived from that time until his death, with his daughter, Mrs. Marsh.  Eleven years ago last January his hip was fractured by a fall, and he was helpless from that time, and for the past year was not dressed, nor able to leave his bed, yet he bore all his suffering and affliction without a murmur, with all that fortitude that characterizes the true Christian, and has now gone to his long home, to meet friends gone before, and to reap that reward which awaits the finally faithful.

Owen Hickey, a laboring man, came to his death on Sunday night or Monday morning last, in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], under the following circumstances:  He was a single man, and boarded at the house of William Carr, who keeps a boarding house and drinking saloon on the tow path, north of the lock near the hammer factory.  About two o'clock on Monday morning, his lifeless body was found by officer Smith, at the bottom of the front entrance to the cellar of that house, he having evidently fallen from the widow of the second floor immediately above. Coroner Avery held an inquest on Monday morning, and upon examination it was found that his neck was broken in two places.  His roommate testified that Hickey was in their room when he went to sleep; that both had been drinking during Sunday. Deceased had his pants and boots on at the time of the accident. which probably occurred after midnight.  It is supposed that he sat in the window, and losing control of himself fell out.  He is represented as an industrious man, having been employed upon the Midland Railroad for two years past, who occasionally took a little too much beverage.  He was aged about 70 years, and has a brother, John Hickey, living at Weedsport, Cayuga Co., and another brother supposed to be residing at Syracuse.

Murder in DeRuyter

On Saturday morning July 16 at half-past six o'clock, the body of Dennis Griffin, a workman on the Midland Railroad, was found in a pit on section 26 about two and a half miles east of DeRuyter village [Madison Co., NY]\.  When found the body lay on its face, about three and a half feet from the side of the pit, which is twelve and a half feet deep, the head towards the south side of the pit.  The back part of the skull, in a line even with the upper portion, or ear, was completely crushed in, evidently by a heavy blow, and there was a slight contusion on the face, near the eye.  A.V. Bentley, Esq., acting as Coroner, summoned a jury.  Drs. Spencer and Mudge testified as to the injuries.  It was proven that the deceased passed Scott's Hotel about 9 o'clock the evening previous, and a few moments later another man passed in the same direction, walking faster than Griffin. This was the last seen of the deceased.  It was known that Griffin had some fifty or sixty dollars in his possession.  Four cents only were found on the body. The verdict of the jury was that deceased came to his death from causes to them unknown.  The pit where the body was found was about one half mile from the highway, and was not in the usual path to Griffin's boarding place.  Griffin had spent the day in the village endeavoring to collect a debt.  He was an intemperate man.  The position of the body, the blow on the back part of the head, the fact of his money being gone, all prove conclusively that he met his death by foul means.  A good deal of excitement exists over the matter in DeRuyter, especially in the immediate neighborhood, and the opinion is universal that he was murdered.

The many friends of Mr. Beebe, in this County, will be pained to learn that he died at Cincinnatus, Cortland Co. on the morning of June 26th, from the effects of a cancer on his arm, which had troubled him for years, and which had several times been removed by Dr. Hyde, of Cortland, but had returned with increased severity.  in February he went to Philadelphia for treatment, returning but a week previous to his death.  Col. Beebe was formerly a resident of Lincklaen, in this County, and represented the county in the Legislature of 1860.  He was universally esteemed for his many good qualities, and his loss will be mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends.  He was in the 50th year of his age.

BERRY:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], July 10th, Ansel Berry, Esq., aged 64 years.

Although an event long anticipated, we were surprised and pained to learn, on Sabbath evening last, that Ansel Berry was dead.  He died of consumption, after a protracted illness, at his residence on North Main Street.

Mr. Berry was born in Connecticut in 1803.  Losing both father and mother when but an infant, he was placed in charge of a sister living in the Black River country, in this State [NY].  Subsequently he lived for a short time in Onondaga county, thence removed to Tompkins, where he remained, mostly upon a farm, enjoying such advantages only as were common to most poor boys of that day and age, and in like circumstances, till he had attained his majority.  About the year 1826, he married Miss Lorinda Gage, of Enfield, N.H. and removed to Norwich.  He here learned the hatter's trade with David Griffing, Esq., when, mastering the occupation of his choice, he engaged in the hatting business with Thomas Merrill, then living at Sherburne Four Corners.  The co-partnership existed for a number of years, when Mr. Merrill disposed of his interest to Mr. Berry, who carried on the concern till 1854.  In connection with the business of the store, Mr. Berry was interested to quite an extent in manufacturing operations, the wool and fur trade, and in speculations of one kind or another, in all of which he was eminently successful.

Previous to 1854 he was elected Coroner, holding the office for three terms or nine consecutive years.  In 1856 he was elected to the Legislature from the first Assembly District, running largely ahead of his ticket.  He served acceptably on the committee of thirteen, known as the sub-committee of the whole, and one or two others of considerable importance.  To his exertions we are mainly indebted for a much needed amendment, which was effected at that session, of our village charter.  In 1857 he was chosen Trustee of the corporation with Harvey Hubbard and N.B.  Hale, and was made President of the Board.  In 1858 he was elected supervisor.

His health beginning to fail in the winter of 1860, he gradually withdrew from active pursuits, and for the past two or three years wholly relinquished the cares and perplexities incident to a business life.

Warm and ardent in his politics, he ever held decided views and opinions, which, though in no boastful spirit, he was always ready and willing to maintain.  He was strong in the affections of his household, and in his friendships reliable and confiding.  Though an economist, he had a benevolent heart, and many there are who have received benefactions from his bounty, which the world knows not of, who "will rise up and call him blessed."  One of the founders of the Methodist church, of which he was a member, he was one of the main pillars--its most liberal supporters.  One of the last acts of his life was deeding the Methodist parsonage lot to the Society, a gift of the amount due him, reaching nearly $1,200.

He was twice married.  His first wife dying in 1835, he subsequently married her sister, Miss Hannah J. Gage with whom he lived most happily and who survives him.  He leaves two sons, Edwin and B. Gage Berry.

Another worthy citizen and active businessman for long years, one who for the most part of a useful life was identified with the growth and prosperity of this community and its institutions, and who was interested in every good work, has been taken from us.  Another pilgrim, ripe in experience and with locks silvered with the frosts of many winters, has passed the waves of Jordan and gained the promised land of life and peace eternal.

A Milford paper gives the following particulars of his death:

"His death was sudden and unexpected and has cast a gloom over the circle of friends he had gathered around him during his residence in our midst.  He accompanied the Presbyterian Sunday school on their excursion to Lewis on Tuesday the 7th instant and was then in his usual good health and fine spirits.  On Friday, the 10th, he was taken sick, but his illness, at first, did not cause much uneasiness to himself or friends; it soon however, developed into a disease that baffled the skill of his physicians, and at 5 o'clock on Tuesday evening his spirit took its flight for the unknown world."

Death of Henry Snow

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, Juen 22, 1870

Another aged citizen has gone from our midst.  Henry Snow, for sixty odd years a highly respected inhabitant of this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], died at the residence of his nephew Walter M. Conkey, on Tuesday, the 14th, at the advanced aged of 78 years.  Mr. Snow, with his widowed mother removed from Stonington, Conn., to this place early in the present century, when the country was new and was directly identified with the growth and prosperity of the infant settlement, which he tried to see become a growing and prosperous village.  He here learned the carpenters trade and subsequently carried on the cabinet business in connection with house building for a number of years.  For twenty-five years he was engaged with Abner Warner in the manufacture of carriages, the firm of Snow & Warner at once acquiring an enviable reputation, both on account of the excellence of their work and for their integrity, a reputation which has been well maintained by the surviving partner to this day.

Mr. Snow was strictly, proverbially honest, his word being considered as good as his bond.  We cannot better exemplify his probity and his uniformly mild disposition than in the words of him whose long intimate business and social relations give the right of authority to what he utters.

Mr. Warner, standing beside his coffined remains, with much feeling remarked:  "We have been partners for twenty-five years, and I cannot re-call a single instance when there was the least misunderstanding or when a single unkind word ever passed between us."

This is saying much for human nature, especially as we find it now a days, yet from what we know of Mr. Warner and know of the deceased, we can readily give full credence to the expression. Always quiet and unobtrusive, the last years of Mr. Snow have been mostly passed within a circle of his friends and a few acquaintances, remarkably free from ostentation or show.  He was younger by some four years than his brother Capt. William Show, who died about twelve months since.  Neither had ever married. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon.

Little Lillie, that darling flower, / Has gone to dwell in Eden's bower; / Her loving sister she will meet, / And holy angels there will greet.

Her sufferings here were great, we know, / While in this world of pain and woe; / But she has gone where sorrows may not come, / In Heaven above, her peaceful home.

Her body sleeps in the silent grave, / But Christ has said to her soul, "Arise," / And she, with that sister who had gone before, / Awaits her parents in the skies.

A most painful and fatal accident occurred in Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], on Tuesday morning of last week.  Mahlon [Gridley], youngest son of Orrin Gridley, Esq., aged ten years, was engaged in rolling a meadow upon his father's farm, with a log roller drawn by a pair of horses.  While standing on the platform back of the roller, with the lines around one arm and his neck, it is supposed that he lost his balance and fell off, when the horses commenced backing, which drew the lines tightly around his neck, strangling him almost instantly.  Not more than five minutes previous to his condition being discovered, he was seen by his father, who was working with hired help within a few rods of him, at which time everything was going on well.  We learn that the unfortunate lad came near losing his life last winter, while engaged in getting the log from the woods, from which this same roller was made.

Killed by Lightning:  On the evening of Thursday (19th inst.), Mrs. Samuel Haight, living near Sidney Center [Delaware Co., NY], was instantly killed by lightning.  The fluid passed near the house and hit a pear tree, and at the same time passed through the top of the window burning holes in the curtain, and instantly killing Mrs. Haight.  Her niece, Miss Hutchinson, from Gilbertsville, was very near her at the time, but escaped uninjured.  No marks of the fluid were found upon the person of the deceased except on one of her toes.  Sidney Plains Star.

We desire in this time of our sorrow and bereavement, to bear testimony to the power of the religion of the gospel to sustain and comfort in affliction when even earthly refuge fails.  The promises of God have long been precious to us, but such words as "my grace shall be sufficient for thee" and "as thy day is so shall thy strength be," never had such significance as now.  These promises have been verified when we most needed their fulfillment.

On the last Sabbath of the year we received a telegram saying "Lottie died this morning at nine o'clock."  These tidings were entirely unexpected and for a few moments we were dumb, we opened not our mouths, for we knew the Lord had done it.  But very soon, we were enabled to kiss the rod which had smitten us, and to say--we trust with resignation--not our will but thine O God be done.  The next morning while it was yet dark, we commenced our long and sad journey, but we were not left desolate for the comforter was near, bringing to our remembrance, precious words of Him who spake as never man spake and who alone can sustain his sorrowing suffering ones. We feared lest our strength should fail when called to look upon the form of our beloved child, but God in his mercy upheld us, and gave us the sweet assurance, that our child was safe on the glorified shore, in the presence of that Saviour whom she had honored and loved from childhood.  A sweet smile rested upon her face, indicating as we thought the state of mind in which she passed from earth to Heaven. Then came fear concerning the burial scene, will grace sufficient be given to keep husband, parents, brother and sister from Sinking!  Yes.  To the praise of God's goodness be it said, the coffin, the shroud and the grave were disarmed of their usual terrors and we laid our firstborn, a young wife and mother beneath the snow, while a voice seemed to say, "I am the resurrection and the life, and because I live thy child shall live also."  We cannot refrain from pressing with great earnestness upon Christian parents, the duty of making it their first care to lead their children to that Saviour who will be their shepherd, guardian and guide in this life, and in the world to come, will give them Eternal life.  We bless God that we are not called to mourn as those without hope. The light of our child's Christian example, her carefully marked Bible, her place of secret prayer, her love for the cause of Christ, and other sweet memories, are a precious legacy to her bereaved husband and stricken family.    The bereaved parents.

At the residence of H.N. Elliott, in this city [Manhattan, KS], Jan'y 1, 1869, Mrs. Jane Elliott, aged 68 years, 3 months and 6 days.

Deceased was our mother.  For twenty-three years a widow, she devoted herself to her children, and her pious faithful life is held in sweet remembrance by them.  she was born in Newport, Isle of Wight, England, and came to New York State in 1829.  Three of her children having settled in Manhattan [KS], she took up her residence with them the past summer, and it was our expectation to have her with us yet many years.  Alas, the destroyer came, and suddenly dashed our hopes to the ground.  Typhoid Pneumonia, in one short week, terminated the life of her we loved.  But she died in peace.  For fifty years an avowed follower of Jesus, she had sweet consolation on her death bed, and calmly prepared to cross the river. We write this tribute tearfully, yet with the consolation that with our mother "all is well."  Manhattan (Kansas), Standard
