At the Major House, in Union [Broome Co. NY] July 4th, 1857, by John K. Edwards, Esq. Mr. Henry Cuthier to Miss Martha Bailey, both of Newark, Tioga Co. N.Y.

Death

On Saturday July 4th, Mordecai Corsaw of the town of Union [Broome Co. NY] was run over by engine No. 212 attached to the freight train No. 1 and killed.  The deceased was lying on the track drunk, and his brother was nearby him off the track.  The engineer and conductor used every effort to save him but without effect and no blame is attached to them. The body was taken to Union and Mr. John Congdon, the coroner, sent for, who proceeded to hold an inquest.  The jury, consisting of J. Woughton, Foreman, Geo. Bradley, John Boughton, Wm. H. Mace, D.C. Norton, P.T.B. Emmons and David Mersereau, found a verdict in accordance with the above facts.  Binghamton Republican.

Mr. Corsaw and his brother took the freight train in the forenoon of the 4th for Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] and was put off the train by the conductor for not paying their fare. The conductor, knowing their situation, should have seen that they were left entirely clear of the track.  His age was about 33 years.

Death

In Glen Aubury, Broome Co. NY. on Wednesday evening July 22d, after a short illness, Mr. George W. Smith aged about 44 years.

Mr. Smith was an old resident of Glen Aubury (a name given the place by his deceased wife) having settled there about the year 1860.  He built an extensive tannery in that place and employed a large number of hands and was the means of building up the place. He has recently erected a beautiful residence in a new style, the equal of which is not to be found in the county.  It is feared that his place in that village cannot be satisfactorily filled in a business capacity, as he was almost the only businessman there.  His loss will be severely felt in the village and vicinity, as also in the whole county, where he was well known.

"Thou are gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee; / Though sorrow and darkness encompass the tomb. / The Savior has passed through its portals before thee, / And the lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom"

Death

Another Revolutionary Patriot Gone!  From the National Intelligencer, Nov. 24:  This day we have a melancholy duty to perform.  Another of the Worthies of the Revolution, the tried patriot and consistent Politician, the second Officer of our Government, the venerable [Elbridge] Gerry [1744-1814] is no more!  Yesterday, between the hours of ten and eleven he breathed his last.

His death was as sudden as it was unexpected.  In apparent health he presided in the Senate during an arduous sitting on the preceding day.  Fifteen minutes before his death, although in his seventieth year, he bade fair to outlive many of those who read these lines. At a few minutes warning the thread of life was out, and his spirit winged its flight to happier realms.

The death of Charles Courter which occurred at Cobleskill on the 2d inst. removes one of Schoharie county's most active and respected citizens.  Although he was seventy-one years of age, from early life until within a few days of his demise he conducted a prosperous and extensive business which received his close attention.  He was born at Cobleskill and was for forty years the leading merchant and businessman of the place.  He was one of the founders of the First National Bank of Cobleskill and was president of the institution from its organization until his death.  He was one of the projectors of the Albany and Susquehanna railroad and for many years served on its board of directors.  Mr. Courter was a Democrat in politics and in his younger years was active in the party councils.

Mrs. Amelia Mead Hubbard died at the residence of her son, ex-senator John F. Hubbard in Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] Sunday morning.  She was seventy-two-years of age, the daughter of Gen. Thompson Mead, a pioneer in the Chenango Valley.  She married John F. Hubbard, editor of the Norwich Journal, in 1820.

______________________________

Death of Rev. Dr. Beadle:  The following dispatch, dated Philadelphia, Jan. 6, records the death of a native of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] held in high esteem by the older residents of the place to whom he was known:

The Rev. Elias R. Beadle, D.D. died in Philadelphia during the night of Sunday, almost literally with his harness on.  He preached in the morning in his own pulpit in the Second Presbyterian Church at Twenty-first and Walnut Streets and during the service announced that the debt of the church amounting to $75,000 had been provided for, part of the amount paid in, and the remainder guaranteed.  After the service he was congratulated by many of the audience and said that the one thing that he had been laboring for had been accomplished.  He had built up a church to the worship of God and it was free from debt.  He started for his home and had only gone three squares when an icy gust of wind seemed to cut into his heart.  He succeeded in reaching the door of this brother-in-law's house, only a few steps away and Dr. Agnew was called.  He gradually grew worse and expired yesterday morning.  Dr. beadle was about 65 years of age.

Aaron Brewer who died in this town Monday afternoon at the residence of his son-in-law, William Hackett, was born in Cambridge, Washington Co. [NY] October 23, 1793, and was consequently 95 years of age.   He was our oldest citizen and during a busy life had formed many strong friendships.  In politics Mr. Brewer was a Democrat, voting consistently and conscientiously.  He had no ambition for office and never held any. To the last his mind remained clear and intelligent, and he dropped away as a man worn out.

RYAN - DWYER:  In Hamilton [Madison Co. NY] Thursday, Nov. 21, by Rev. A.P. Ludden, Mr. M. Patsy Ryan and Miss Hannah Dwyer Both of Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY].

Deaths

Cornelius Kennedy whose death we announced last week was one of our most substantial farmers, honest, frank and upright in his dealings, and a generous friend.  He belonged to the class of men of whom we wish there were more such, and when he had well filled his three-score and ten years, he passed away leaving many to regret the benefit of his living example and counsel could not have longer vouchsafed them.

The Chicago Inter Ocean of the 3d inst. gives the following sketch of the funeral of the late Mrs. George A. Meech whose decease we announced last week:  "The funeral of Mrs. Celia Adelaide Meech, wife of Justice George A. Meech, took place yesterday from the family residence, 15 Harmon Court.  From an early hour in the forenoon relatives and friends of the lamented deceased and her bereaved husband commenced to assemble to take a farewell look at the face now cold in death and witness the last sad rites. The remains incased in a handsome casket, almost covered with beautifully designed floral tributes were placed in the front parlor and surrounded by sorrowing relatives.  At 1 o'clock they were taken in charge by the pall bearers, Justices Summerfield and Haines, Senator Robinson, State Treasurer J.C. Smith and Messrs. Ira W. Buell and O.P. Abercrombie and placed in the hearse, and when the many mourners had taken their places in the waiting carriages, the cortege moved slowly to Grace Episcopal Chruch.  The destination reached, the pastor, the Rev. Clinton Locke, met the remains at the entrance to the church and preceded it up the aisle, reading passages of Scripture. The remains being rested, the beautiful service of the Episcopal Chruch was proceeded with.  After the usual anthem, taken from the Psalms had been read by the pastor, with choral responses, Hymn 509, "Having a desire to depart, and be with Christ," was beautifully rendered by the choir. The lesson from Corinthians followed and then hymn 514, "Where I am, there also shall my servant be."  Dr. Locke offered prayer and then announced that the rest of the services would be performed at the grave. The remains were next removed from the church, the pastor leading.  There was scarcely a dry eye in the structure at this point, the congregation of which deceased was a member, appearing at the moment fully to realize that a sister had parted from them, on earth forever. the solemn procession was then reformed, and the remains taken to Rose Hill cemetery and tenderly laid away."

Bainbridge Republican, Bainbridge, NY, December 19, 1878

Deaths

The funeral services of the late Mrs. Nearing will be held on Saturday morning at nine o'clock, at the house of Mr. Daniel Bristol.  The body will be taken to Morris [Otsego Co. NY] for interment.

Mr. John Rinehart, a German living in one of the tenement houses on Charles Freiot's farm is sorely afflicted.  He has recently lost two children with fever and now his wife and another child are down with it.  We understand that they are in almost destitute circumstances and are worthy of assistance.  We think if the Mission Bands of our churches would contribute to the relief of such in need it would avail more than to send it to foreign countries where they ought to be able to take care of their own poor.

N.Y.  She came to Oxford to reside in 1859 and leaves a large circle of relatives and warmly attached friends to mourn her death.  For many years, consumption has numbered her among its subjects, yet her energetic nature rose superior to the weakness and suffering consequent upon that disease, and until the last two weeks she has attended to every detail of her household and her business.  Making no loud profession of love and affection, she was yet most faithful to all the relations and duties of wife, neighbor and friend.  Never did she wound the heart of the unfortunate or sorrowing or grieve others by unkindness and lack of sympathy.  In all dealings with patrons observant of the small, sweet courtesies of life, she was to those in need most especially kind. She was by parental training and by religious faith a Presbyterian, though from long illness was seldom able to attend public worship.  In those last days and hours of physical torture, she feared that some word seeming like impatient murmuring might escape her lips.  In the hearts of all who knew and loved her, there will be a place consecrated to the memory of her blameless life and she cannot by them be forgotten.

"From the eternal shadow rounding / All oer sun and starlight here, / Voices of our lost ones sounding, / Bid us, be of heart and cheer, / Through the silence down the spaces falling on the inward ear."

"Let us draw their mantles oer us / Which have fallen by the way; / Let us do the work before us, / Cheerily, bravely while we may, / Ere the long night silence cometh and with us it is not day"

Accident in the Hancock Tunnel [Delaware Co. NY]

Last Saturday afternoon a large rock in the Hancock tunnel of the N.Y. and O. Midland Railroad, which had become loosened by frequent blasts, gave way, crushing beneath it three workmen who were engaged in arching the tunnel.  Walter Allen of Summitville [Sullivan Co. NY], was so badly injured that he died a short time after the accident and Smith Denman of the same village had his leg broken and received several serious cuts and bruises. The third man, whose name we did not learn, escaped with a few bruises.  The Mail train going north was delayed several hours by the accident.  A few weeks ago, a similar accident occurred in this tunnel, but fortunately no one was injured.  When the repairs which are now being made are completed, no further danger from falling rocks will be liable to occur. Allen leaves a wife and two children. The dead and wounded were brought home on a special train furnished by the road.  Middletown Mercury, 6th

A story has been going the rounds that Jerome Sols of Plasterville, not long since held friendly communion with a panther near the roadway in a dense piece of woods along which he was journeying.  The horse was stopped.  The women at sight of the panther, as well as Jerome, became extremely nervous.  The panther's eyes lighted up like balls of fire. At last, the animal's countenance fell, and no sooner had it fallen than our brave, heroic Jerome alighted, taking advantage of the moment, drove him from the scene and although the panther has not been seen since, his fierce yells have been now and then heard in the distant forest which sounds like the cries of a woman in great distress.  Search has been made but nothing has yet been seen that looks anything like a panther, wild cat, screech owl or woman.  G.S.T.

Nearly three months since we published an account of the sudden and mysterious disappearance of Lucien Mosier of Oxford [Chenango Co. NY].  He was last seen in Oxford the second day of the town fair, early in September last.  All endeavors to discover his whereabout were unavailing, and he was given up by his parents and friends as dead, many thinking that he had been accidentally drowned. The press of this and adjoining counties widely published the account of his disappearance, but nothing was heard from him until last Saturday, when as we learn from the Times, Mr. Mosier received a telegram from a relative in Marathon, N.Y. that his son was at that place, well and all right. The news afforded great relief to the parents of the young man whose departure without a word of his intentions needs an explanation.

Original Notice:  Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, October 10, 1878:  Information is wanted of Lucien D. Mosier, son of Warren Mosier of this town [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY], who mysteriously disappeared on the last day of the fair, September 19th.  He was last seen in this village in the afternoon of that day and since then nothing has been seen or heard of him, either by his parents or friends in town or by his relatives residing in other towns.  He is twenty-four years of age, rather slim built and wore a black hat and a black suit of cassimere clothes, the pants being ribbed.  Nothing had been noticed in his actions that would lead to the belief that he was not in his right mind, nor had he expressed any desire or determination to leave home.  Any information concerning his whereabouts will be gratefully received by his father, Warren Mosier, whose address is Oxford, N.Y.
