Smithville, Chenango Co. NY:  The funeral of Frank [Tarbell] youngest son of Charles P. Tarbell, was attended from his father's residence on Sunday last.  Rev. Mr. Warren of Montrose, Pa. officiated. Frank left this place a little over a year ago to go to work at Bradford, Pa. where he received an injury that resulted in death.  His death will be mourned by a large circle of friends. The family have the sympathy of all, in this their hour of bereavement.

Frank Tarbell, son of C.P. Tarbell of Smithville was fatally injured by the walking beam of an oil well at Alton, near Bradford, Penn., last Tuesday evening.  He was employed on the Tate farm and on Tuesday took the place of a man who was at work at well No. 1.

At nine o'clock in the evening he climbed up in the derrick to fix what is known as a water hook on the walking beam. He was on the braces which stay the "head-ache-post," with his arm around the post and his head partly upon the top, when the walking beam came down upon his head, crushing the skull.  He fell down about eight feet to the floor, sliding on the reverse cord part of the way.  He was senseless from the time the beam hit him.

His brother, G.E. Tarbell, Esq. was telegraphed to at Greene, and he received the dispatch on Wednesday.  He made all haste to reach Bradford, taking Erie Railway train No. 1 at this city and having to travel from Carrollton to Bradford, a distance of fourteen miles on foot in the night.  There he waited from three o'clock in the morning for the first train to Alton and from Alton to the Tate farm he had to travel three miles on foot and reached his brother at eight in the morning.

At five o'clock in the afternoon an operation was performed upon the skull to get the pieces in proper place.  Four physicians were in attendance, and the operation was skillfully performed, but the patient only survived it about half an hour.  Just before he died, he indicated by a smile that he recognized his brother.

Frank was about 20 years of age.  He went to the oil country about 18 months ago and engaged his services with John Davis & Son as a clerk, and about two weeks since went to work on a well for the purpose of learning the business, and eventually investing there.  He was a bright, energetic young man, and won hosts of friends in that bustling country.  He was treasurer of Era Hook and Ladder Company of Bradford.  A delegation of Eras took the remains to Bradford early Friday morning. They were escorted to the Bradford depot by the Fire Department and again accompanied to Carrolton by a delegation of Eras.  Binghamton Republican, 13th inst.

His remains arrived here [Greene] Saturday morning, and were taken to his father's residence in Smithville.  His funeral was very largely attended on Sunday, quite a number going from this village.  Rev. Mr. Warren, of Montrose, Pa., officiated.

A fire occurred in Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] Saturday morning accompanied by loss of life.  At 4:30 a.m. the fine brick mansion of the late David Griffing was discovered to be on fire in the room occupied by Mrs. E. Griffing.  Mrs. Griffing was seriously burned, and though she was able to leave her room, she was able only to reach the hall, a point some ten feet distant, where she was found dead.  Her neck, shoulders, face and back were burned, many places being burned to a crisp.  Her age was 57.  Her aged mother, the widow of the late Dr. Lully, formerly of Syracuse, who has been an invalid for many years, was in her room on the second floor of the dwelling and was rescued with much difficulty. The other inmates were roused by the smoke and gave the alarm. The damage to the house is estimated at $2,500 insured for $2,000. The furniture was uninsured and suffered greatly by hasty removal and from water.  Mrs. Griffing was a respected lady, and a cousin of Senator Roscoe Conkling. The fire is supposed to have been caused by the explosion of a kerosene lamp which Mrs. Giffing was in the habit of leaving burning.

Cards are out for the marriage of Mr. C.R. Chase  and Miss May I. Carpenter at Emmanuel Church [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], Wednesday afternoon, June 18th at 5 p.m.

Chenango Semi-Weekly Telegraph, Norwich, NY, June 21, 1879:  Emmanuel Church was thronged on Wednesday afternoon with the wealth and fashion of Norwich, attracted thither by the wedding ceremony of Charles E. Chase and Miss May L. Carpenter.  The church was appropriately trimmed, and the chancel elaborately decorated with running pine and cut flowers and spanned by an evergreen arch from the center of which hung a floral horseshoe for "good luck."  A few minutes before five o'clock the following young lady friends of the bride entered on the arms of the ushers. Deaths

The people of that portion of Smithville known as the "Dibble's Corners," [Chenango Co. NY] were startled on Wednesday morning by the announcement that Adelaine Seeley aged 55 years, wife of Abel Seeley, an old resident, had been found dead in a water tank in the rear of her residence, under circumstances that appeared mysterious.  Dr. Lee of Oxford was notified of the circumstances, and he telegraphed to Coroner Geo. W. Avery of Norwich who at once started for the scene of the affair, accompanied by a representative of the Telegraph. At Oxford, a Coroner's jury was summoned consisting of McGeorge Bundy, Charles W. Brown, Dwight M. Lee, J.G. VanWagenen, W. Cone Mahurin, Ira W. June and Charles W. Warn, who on arriving on the spot were at once sworn in with McGeorge Bundy as foreman and an investigation commenced, when the following facts were elicited which sufficiently demonstrated the manner of the woman's death, to warrant the jury after a brief hearing in finding a verdict of accidental drowning.  The circumstances disclosed are briefly as follows:  Abel Seeley and his wife resided alone and on the morning in question they got up about 6 o'clock and Mr. Seeley milked his cows and carried the milk to the factory about a mile distant; he returned, put up his horse and with his wife ate breakfast, after which he went to the barn to feed his calves and turkeys; greased his wagon, was absent some fifteen or twenty minutes. While at the barn he saw his wife in the front yard transplanting flowers. After he had finished his chores, he went to the yard and back of house to pick up some stray boards and came around to the rear and entered the house.  Not finding his wife in the house, he opened doors into several rooms calling her name.  Getting no response, he went to the water tank, where he saw his wife laying on the bottom in about 18 inches of water, face down and body drawn up.  He reach down and took one of her hands, felt for pulse and then after trying to get the body out of the water, went to a neighbor's, name Ethan Boyce, about a fourth of a mile distant, telling them what had occurred and in company with a man named James Webb hastened to the house and by tipping over the hogshead released the body of the unfortunate woman. When taken out there was still warmth in her body, and it is more than probable that my proper means she might have been resuscitated, as there was no proof adduced to show that she had been in the water long enough to drown. Dr. Lee examined the body and pronounced the cause of death asphyxias.  Mr. and Mrs. Seeley had not lived happily together, and she had once left him and sued for a divorce, but after an absence of some six months, last fall returned to their old home and had since resided with her husband. Several witnesses swore that they thought her a little out of her head and others that she had a violent temper.  Her position in the tub with no evidence of a struggle to get out leaves at least a doubt in the minds of many as to whether it was a case of suicide or accidental drowning. The deceased leaves two children, a married daughter residing in Oxford and a son about twenty-three years of age, who lives in Smithville about half a mile from his father's house. Altogether it is a very sad and melancholy affair.

Deaths

In Laurens [Otsego Co. NY] on the 19th inst. Mr. Robert C. Weaver in his 58th year.  His death was very sudden and unexpected.  He had been engaged in labor in the field during the forepart of the day, and feeling somewhat indisposed, he went into his house and complained of feeling quite unwell and in a few moments expired.  He was a consistent and exemplary Christian and death found him at his post with his armor on.  With many his last words to which they ever listened will be remembered as uttered in the solemn assembly the evening before his death.  "Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh."

Death of Hon. Isaac Williams:  We are called upon to record the death of this aged gentleman at his residence in this town [Cooperstown, Otsego Co., NY], on the 9th instant, in the 84th year of his age.  Mr. Williams was born in Lebanon, Ct., and came into this county with his father in 1793, when Otsego was almost a wilderness.  He has been a resident of this town ever since.  He first entered public life as Under Sheriff of this county [Otsego Co. NY] about 1810 and was afterwards appointed Sheriff by the Council of Appointment.  In 1813 he was chosen a Member of Congress by the "Republicans" to fill a vacancy.  He was again chosen in 1817 and again in 1823.  His last term closed in '25 at the election of Mr. Adams.  As this county gave Adams a majority in 1824 and the election went to the House, Mr. W. voted for him in Congress and thenceforward identified himself with the "administration" party.  In 1828 he ran as the Adams' candidate for Sheriff, but was defeated by Harvey W. Babcock, the Jackson candidate.

Mr. Williams started in life with nothing but his axe and a good constitution.  He was always a hard worker, but never accumulated much property, partly owing to losses sustained through some of his Deputies while Sheriff and which embarrassed him for many years after.  he was very methodical in business and died without owing any man a dollar.  He reared a family of thirteen children, nine of whom survive him.  On each recurring Thanksgiving Day, the descendants of the worthy old patriarch, to the fourth generation, were in the habit of meeting around the family hearth stone where they will never gather again.  Most of them gathered around his coffin on Saturday last when the last tribute of respect was paid the memory of an honest and highly esteemed man, whose life has been one of usefulness and who left a name and reputation fair and untarnished.  Freeman's Journal., 17th.

Golden Wedding:  On Tuesday, the 11th of February Joseph and Betsey Ritter completed fifty years of married life.  On that day a happy party assembled at their residence in the village of Canastota [Madison Co. NY].  It was not composed of their rich neighbors and friends, met to pay the tribute that wealth offers to wealth, but of their own children, obeying that most blessed command, "Honor thy father and thy mother."  The offspring of this worthy couple are three sons, four daughters, twenty-one grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  There were twenty-four present on the occasion and made various valuable presents to their father and mother.  In the midst of their enjoyment a most interesting surprise occurred.  A brother-in-law residing in Montgomery Co. of this State [NY], arrived and presented the honored father with a beautiful cane and the mother with an elegant bride's cake, having the initials of "Joseph and Betsy, fifty years," beautifully wrought upon it.  On receiving the cane, the venerable man quaintly replied that if he should live to be old it might be useful to him.  It is a remarkable fact that the three sons and four sons-in-law are all either noted cheese makers or successful farmers, and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren all healthy and promising.  Such families surely constitute the best treasure of a nation, and as Joseph and Betsy Ritter have made so large a contribution to the real wealth of the State, I conclude that this was a golden wedding of the first class.

Was it not the sweetest sorrow / Ever come to mother's part, / Thus to feel your child an angel / Springing from your bleeding heart, / Cheering hearts of Christian mothers, / By our Saviour's precious blood?
