News Item

Joseph P. Chamberlain: This individual has obtained the nomination for Sheriff of the county of Chenango [NY] and so far as his political conduct is concerned, we claim the right to examine it.  And what better way is there to judge of a man's future course than to examine his former conduct:

If we recollect right, a few years since, when Samuel A. Smith, Esq. of Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] was nominated for that office, this same Mr. Chamberlain bolted and gave his support to Philip M. DeZeng. And this is not all.  Two years last spring, this same Mr. Chamberlain went into the town caucus of Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] and urged his claims as a candidate for the office of Supervisor, but Thomas Humphrey, Esq. of that town, received the nomination.  Now all will say that Mr. Chamberlian ought to have supported Mr. Humphrey he (Mr. H.) having been fairly nominated and his moral and political character being unimpeachable.  But Mr. Chamberlian bolted and took a nomination from the Whigs.  He was moreover a strong Adams man when Gen. Jackson was elected President.  In short, he has been anything and everything but a consistent politician.  Ought such a man to expected to receive the support of the republicans of this county, especially when his nomination was forced upon the convention through the central dictation?  We, for ourselves, believe that such a man should not, and cannot be elected!  Oxford Republican

Death

Died, in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY] on Tuesday morning last, Mrs. Ursula Perkins, wife of Mr. Erastus Perkins and relict of the late Hon. John Allen of Litchfield Con. AEt 42 years.

In the various relations of wife, mother, friend and Christian, the virtues of the deceased were truly conspicuous, and her affable manners and benevolent disposition had not only endeared her to those who were connected with her by the ties of consanguinity but has rendered her loss truly afflictive to all her friends and acquaintances.  But she has gone.  The knell has announced her exit. The ethereal spirit has ascended to its benignant Father.  She has exchanged a world of cares and sorrows for a heaven of bliss and to those who are unwilling to submit to the mysterious ways of providence, Deity says "Peace - be Still."

The funeral of the deceased will be attended this day, and the procession will move to the Church at precisely half past one o'clock.

Mr. Forsyth was a brother of C. Forsyth of this place.  A letter received last week by C. Forsyth contains the following particulars concerning the death of his brother.  "On the morning of the 15th (Friday), Mr. Forsyth hitched his team which were high-lived, and which had been idle for several days, to the wagon to haul a load of straw.  Mr. Freeman, with whom he had been staying for some three years and whose daughter he was soon to wed, cautioned him to be careful of the team, and advised him to unhitch them while loading the straw as they might run away.  Mr. Forsyth did as advised, hitched the team again to the wagon and had started when the team sprag into a run, pulling him down in front of the wagon, behind the team, receiving the injuries from which he died. The injuries were received internally, and it is unknown whether they were caused by the kicks of the team or by being run over by the wagon. There were no external marks to be found. The accident occurred about 7 A.M., Mr. Forsyth dying at about 2 o'clock P.M. of the same day."

Smith - Bissell:  On the beautiful evening of January 7th, the most fashionable wedding for some years held in Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] occurred at the residence of William Bissell on Main Street, this occasion being the marriage of Miss Lottie Bissel and Charles Smith.  During the day and at an early hour in the evening, acceptances, regrets and presents were often sent in, and the bride's home was the scene of considerable commotion.  Among many other elegant presents, Mr. Smith gave his son and daughter $100 in gold. which was deposited in the Wilber National Bank to the credit of the bride.  The house was brilliantly illuminated and presented a pleasant appearance.  At 8:30 o'clock the marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Y.C. Smith, D.D. of the M.E. church.  The groom was dressed in a stylish dress suit of black and the bride was attired in a lovely silk of delicate -?-.  There was a profusion of orange blossoms tastefully arranged in her hair.  A delicious line of refreshments were served, the bridal cake coming from Mayer's. The evening was spent in a decidedly social manner.  There was no more reserve than courtesy and due dignity demanded and Mr. and Mrs. Bissell were unceasing in their attentions. Deaths

Levi Wood Esq. one of the most venerable and honored citizens of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] departed this life Thursday morning, March 24, aged 81 years.  He had been in feeble health some time, more rapidly declining during the last few days. He had frequently expressed the wish that he might not live to be dependent upon the care of others, and his departure was as he desired.  He walked into the sitting room on Wednesday and returned, being but once assisted, to his bed.  He passed away as calmly and peacefully as an infant falls asleep.

____________________________

Hon. James S. Campbell : From a published discourse of Rev.  H.W. Swinerton, delivered at the funeral of Mr. Campbell, whose death we announced last week, we gather the following:

He was at the time of his death, older than the government.  He was born a subject of George III.  He was four years old when the Declaration of independence was made.  He was six years old when Cherry Valley was destroyed by the Indians.  He was carried away captive by the Indians and was a prisoner with them for nearly two years, so that he was a surviving prisoner of the War of the Revolution.  He was adopted into the Indian family of Williams in Canada.  At the time of his birth, Cherry Valley was in the county of Albany, so that he lived in the counties of Albany, Tryon, Montgomery and Otsego, and yet never changed his residence.  He was, without doubt, the only man who had seen and conversed with the first Chief Magistrate and the last Chief Magistrate of this Republic.  After the War of the Revolution, he met the first President, General Washington, personally, when he tarried at his father's house on this spot where we now stand, as he came up the great Susquehanna Valley to view the outposts of that immense area which he had successfully defended and dedicated to freedom and to look upon the scenes of some of the bloodiest chapters in that war.  At the close of the late struggle, he met and conversed at Albany with the leading commander of that second revolution, who now occupies the chair of state as the head of the nation, thus bringing together in one life the earliest and the latest events in the history of our country.  All his children except one survive him.  Among his children are the Rev. Dr. A.E. Campbell, Judge Wm. W. Campbell, Samuel B. Campbell of Castleton, John Campbell of New York and Dr. Augustus Campbell of Illinois.  At a patriarchal age he was gathered to his fathers.

News Item

Rev. Benjamin G. Paddock the oldest Methodist Minister in this State [NY], the first Pastor of the Methodist church in Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY], who is here on a visit to his daughter Mrs. Dr. Lathrop, preached in the Methodist church on Sunday morning, April 3d.  Though in his 82d year, Mr. Paddock has the appearance and mental and physical vigor of a younger man.  It is 65 years ago since he first commenced to preach, under a permit from his church organization, which gift he exercised for several years before he became the settled Pastor of a church.  For 45 years he officiated in that capacity and then was placed on the superannuated list, but he had continued frequently to preach, as health and strength would permit and enjoys the privilege.

Mr. Paddock came here in 1818, fifty-two years ago, about which time the Otsego Circuit was established by the Philadelphia Conference and took charge of the Methodist Church which had previously been organized but had no settled Pastor.  The Society had commenced to build a meeting house.  Mr. P. who lived in the house now occupied by Judge Sturges, took hold of the work energetically, boarded the hands employed to work upon it, and crowded it forward to early completion.  He remained with this church three years and saw the fruits of his earnest labors.  during this time, he was in the habit of performing circuit duty, preaching in the towns of Burlington, Richfield, New Lisbon, Hartwick, Milford, Laurens and Oneonta.  By the oldest inhabitants in this village and those towns who knew him half a century ago, he is borne in kindly and respected remembrance, and all we are sure will join in the wish that his remaining days may be full of peace and enjoyment; that the benediction he has so often pronounced upon others may rest upon his own venerable head.  Freeman's Journal

Deaths

Last Friday two gentlemen of Milford [Otsego Co. NY] went on a fishing excursion up the Cherry Valley Creek, above Westville [Otsego Co. NY].  Their names were Mr. Saxton, son-in-law of J.V. Hawver, of this village [Morris, Otsego Co. NY], and Dr. Keith, a dentist of Milford.  They drove a very vicious horse who had on several occasions run away.  After they had fished to their satisfaction, started for home, and when near the four corners at Westville, the horse became frightened, behaved very badly when Mr. Saxton was thrown from the wagon, striking his head against a signpost which stands near the road, crushing the top of his head.  He was taken up and conveyed to his father's residence, which was fortunately but a few rods off. The accident happened about 8 o'clock in the evening and he died at about 11 o'clock, soon after his wife had arrived, having bene sent for to Milford.  After Mr. Saxton was thrown from the wagon, the horse ran a few rods, when the Doctor was thrown out, breaking both of his legs and crushing one of them very badly.  Mr. Saxton was about 33 years of age and leaves a wife and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death.

Mrs. Ann Pomeroy, relict of Dr. George Pomeroy, and third daughter of Judge William Cooper, the founder of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] died April 7th, 1870, aged 86 years.  Her funeral took place at Christ church on the Sunday before Easter.  Mrs. P. was a communicant of this church for over sixty years and during all her life an active and efficient auxiliary in church work.  Her mortal remains lie in the Cooper church lot, among kindred spirits who went before.

And still another of our oldest resident, another respected and loved "Mother in Israel," has taken her departure.  Mrs. Lorinda Sturges, after an illness of several months, died at the residence of her son Judge Sturges on Monday, April 11, aged 77 years. She was one of the early pioneers to this county from Connecticut and has resided here fifty-eight years, 51 in Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY], 7 in Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY]\. In both which places she has left those who loved her for qualities which ever distinguish the kind and large hearted. She has seen the county changed from the wilderness it was when she came here to the comfortable home of fifty thousand people.  She has been a consistent member of the methodist church for about fifty years and died as she had lived in the "hope, more and steadfast" that upon dissolution here, she would enter into eternal rest.  Her remains were taken to Butternuts for interment.  Journal

NY:  Mr. Sephrenas Bassinger, Esq. for many years a Justice of the Peace, died on Tuesday morning, April 12, aged 78.  He was a soldier in the war of 1812, and the greater share of his life was spent in this town in the practice of law.  For the last few years, he has been quite feeble, yet he continued in his business and managed by economy to maintain himself. The funeral services were held on the 13th at the Baptist Church.

The Cooperstown papers contain the obituary of Mrs. Mary Clinton who died at Clintonville [Otsego Co. NY], April 11, aged 79 years.  She was born in Woodstock, Conn., and removed with her family to this county at the age of fifteen, when this portion of the State was almost a wilderness. After several years she removed to Broome County but returned to Otsego at her marriage in 1812.  She was a woman of strong and vigorous mind, indomitable energy and perseverance and in the midst of many trials always evinced a calm trust in God.  She ever took a deep interest in the welfare of her country and distinctly remembered Gen. Washington as she saw him in Connecticut during his last northern tour.  She often described this region of country as she first saw it, and the changes wrought by a high civilization and said she little expected to live till the iron horse stopped at her own door to leave her children as they come to visit her. She leaves eight children, among whom are Mrs. James S. Robinson of Corning, Mrs. William Lake of Toddsville and William M. Clinton, Esq.

MEDBURY:  In Erieville [Madison Co. NY], Aug. 9, Alfred Medbury, Esq. The subject of this notice was born in New Berlin, N.Y. [Chenango Co.], in the year 1806.  He moved into Madison Co. in the year 1818.  In the year 1835 he was elected Justice of the Peace in the town of Nelson, which office he held uninterruptedly with the exception of a single year, until his death.  He held the office of associate justice two terms and was one of the present incumbents.  In the year 1844 he was elected to the Assembly of the Democracy and among his contemporaries were Alvord and Seymour.  Although always a Democrat, yet he was not of the violent and inflammable stamp and was ever regarded by his political opponents as a man of candor.  During the rebellion he served the town in the capacity of War Committeeman.  Personally, he was a man of social nature, and remarkably unassuming.  He adhered with firmness to his own opinions when established and regarded the opinion of others with respect and courtesy.  During the thirty-seven years he held the office of Justice of the Peace, his associations with and business transactions for the people were of such a character as to win for himself the highest respect and confidence.  In all his judicial decisions it was the right that controlled him, rather than party or personal favoritism, and however dissatisfied any might be with the result of cases left for his adjudication, none ever ventured the assertion that he acted otherwise than conscientiously, leaving the results to care for themselves.  In his legal transactions of all kinds, settlement of estates, transfer of real estate, writing of wills, agreements and the multitudinous documents of like character which he was called upon to prepare, it was his personal peculiarity to make such explanations as would prevent one person, by any trickery or legal quibble, from obtaining advantage of another without his knowledge.  His apparent carelessness and what some have called blundering style, has many times cleared away the mist, and exposed a legal trap set for the unsuspecting and ignorant. The value of such a public servant can hardly be estimated and his loss will be felt, not only by his family and friends, but by the entire community.  His ability to transact business with his accustomed facility and correctness markedly began to fail him about three years ago. Last summer he suffered from a stroke of apoplexy, since which time he gradually failed both physically and mentally.  About six months since it became evident that his brain was softening and gradually that former mental vigor faded into the most childlike simplicity.  His gradual physical decline was hastened by a sudden attack of bowel complaint, from the prostrating effects of which he sank and died on the eve of the 9th inst. without a struggle.  His wife, one son and one daughter survive him. they will deeply mourn his loss and the community at large extend their sympathy.  His funeral was held on Sabbath and attended by a large concourse of citizens.

Deaths

At the residence of her father in Walton [Delaware Co. NY] on the 16th ult. of pulmonary consumption, Miss Betsey  North daughter of Robert North, Esq. aged 29 years.

In the death of Miss North, her family have much to mourn for in her were blended every domestic virtue and sisterly affection.  She was beloved by her friends for her firm and unwavering attachments, her amiable and exemplary deportment, the sweetness and serenity of her temper, and for a just conception of things.  For a few years past, she has been threatened with approaching dissolution, by the fatal progress of the disease which has finally terminated her existence.  But in her death, there is hope.  When sickness overtook her, she quietly let go her hold upon the fleeting joys of this life, and steadfastly and earnestly looked forward to that better portion which the world cannot give, and we humbly trust that in the hour of her departure she was not left a stranger to that Redeemer whom she had faith to believe would lead her through the dark valley and shadow of death, to His own blessed kingdom.

Death

We are informed that Mr. Albert Wood was killed at Deposit [Delaware Co. NY] in this county, on Monday of this week by being thrown from a wagon loaded with boards which he was driving.  The wagon was overturned, and the load fell directly upon him.   His skull was fractured, and a leg and arm were broken.   He survived about half an hour, but without any apparent sense of his suffering condition.  Mr. W. was about 21 years of age, and we understand that his parents reside in Guilford, Chenango County [NY]. This fatal accident it is said was caused by the horses taking fright at the discharge of a gun fired by some person on his way to Deposit to attend the annual review held there on that day.  It is well known that the discharge of firearms are strictly forbidden by law within two miles of any parade on the day of meeting.  It is to be hoped that this solemn warning will be sufficient to prompt every commandant of a company or regiment to the strict fulfilment of his duty in putting in force this salutary law and thereby prevent endangering the lives of their fellow citizens.

Deaths

In Worcester [Otsego Co. NY] Dec. 16th, Andrew Dunham aged 67 years.

On Wednesday afternoon of last week, Mr. Merton Green of Hartwick [Otsego Co. NY] went into the woods to fell some trees for firewood, expecting to be back at chore time.  His father-in-law, Mr. Wyllis and the hired man having done the chores, became alarmed at his absence, as having a large dairy he was generally present to help about the care of the stock.  They at once started for the woods in search, but darkness coming on they were unable to find him. The neighbors being notified with a number of citizens in the village, all joined in the search.  About 10 o'clock he was found by Mr. Hurd beneath the trunk of a large tree.  It appears that the tree had been broken partially in twain by some gale of wind, the upper part of the trunk not being quite severed, although the top had fallen down so that it rested upon the ground, forming an arch.  This no doubt caused the tree to fall in a different manner from what he anticipated.  When found he was lying upon his face about four feet from the stump and the body of the tree lying across his neck and shoulder.  From every indication, he was killed instantly.  He was in the prime of life and leaves a wife and one child who have the most heartfelt sympathy of the whole community.  Mr. Green was a public-spirited citizen, a warm friend and a genial man, whom everybody will miss.  His funeral was attended on Friday at the M.E. Church, of which he was an active member.  An unusually large concourse of people with unrestrained tears testified to a deep sympathy with the bereaved, as well as the loss on the part of every one of a valued and honored friend. The Odd Fellows of which Order he was a member were present from this and the Cooperstown Lodge and paid honors to their deceased brother.  Hartwick December 23, 1878

On the 12th inst., a little son of Thomas McDonald, aged 7 years, living about a mile and half east of Middlefield Center [Otsego Co. NY] was kicked by a horse so severely that he died on the 14th.
