News Item

Joseph P. Chamberlain: This individual has obtained the nomination for Sheriff of the county of Chenango [NY] and so far as his political conduct is concerned, we claim the right to examine it.  And what better way is there to judge of a man's future course than to examine his former conduct:

If we recollect right, a few years since, when Samuel A. Smith, Esq. of Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] was nominated for that office, this same Mr. Chamberlain bolted and gave his support to Philip M. DeZeng. And this is not all.  Two years last spring, this same Mr. Chamberlain went into the town caucus of Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] and urged his claims as a candidate for the office of Supervisor, but Thomas Humphrey, Esq. of that town, received the nomination.  Now all will say that Mr. Chamberlian ought to have supported Mr. Humphrey he (Mr. H.) having been fairly nominated and his moral and political character being unimpeachable.  But Mr. Chamberlian bolted and took a nomination from the Whigs.  He was moreover a strong Adams man when Gen. Jackson was elected President.  In short, he has been anything and everything but a consistent politician.  Ought such a man to expected to receive the support of the republicans of this county, especially when his nomination was forced upon the convention through the central dictation?  We, for ourselves, believe that such a man should not, and cannot be elected!  Oxford Republican
