Death

On Saturday July 4th, Mordecai Corsaw of the town of Union [Broome Co. NY] was run over by engine No. 212 attached to the freight train No. 1 and killed.  The deceased was lying on the track drunk, and his brother was nearby him off the track.  The engineer and conductor used every effort to save him but without effect and no blame is attached to them. The body was taken to Union and Mr. John Congdon, the coroner, sent for, who proceeded to hold an inquest.  The jury, consisting of J. Woughton, Foreman, Geo. Bradley, John Boughton, Wm. H. Mace, D.C. Norton, P.T.B. Emmons and David Mersereau, found a verdict in accordance with the above facts.  Binghamton Republican.

Mr. Corsaw and his brother took the freight train in the forenoon of the 4th for Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] and was put off the train by the conductor for not paying their fare. The conductor, knowing their situation, should have seen that they were left entirely clear of the track.  His age was about 33 years.

Death

In Glen Aubury, Broome Co. NY. on Wednesday evening July 22d, after a short illness, Mr. George W. Smith aged about 44 years.

Mr. Smith was an old resident of Glen Aubury (a name given the place by his deceased wife) having settled there about the year 1860.  He built an extensive tannery in that place and employed a large number of hands and was the means of building up the place. He has recently erected a beautiful residence in a new style, the equal of which is not to be found in the county.  It is feared that his place in that village cannot be satisfactorily filled in a business capacity, as he was almost the only businessman there.  His loss will be severely felt in the village and vicinity, as also in the whole county, where he was well known.

"Thou are gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee; / Though sorrow and darkness encompass the tomb. / The Savior has passed through its portals before thee, / And the lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom"
