Marriage

In St. Matthew's Church, Unadilla [Otsego Co. NY] by the Rev. N.A. Adams on the 24th ult. Mr. James Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio to Miss Maria C. Page, daughter of Sherman Page, Esq. of the former place.

Death

At his residence in Kortright [Delaware Co. NY] on the 27th ult. Mr. Alanson Banks in the 65th year of his age.  In the death of Mr. Banks, the Methodist Episcopal Church have lost one of her earliest and most zealous members; he had belonged to that society for more than thirty years.  His life was closed in the full assurance of a happy immortality beyond the grave. While dying, the beholders could say, in the language of the Psalmist, "O, that I might die the death of the righteous."  Mr. Banks was an early settler of Kortright and as a natural consequence, he had to suffered all the dangers and privations common to pioneer enterprise.  In his youth, he was found among the brave few, ready to defend their country, in which cause he received a wound which he carried with him to his tomb.  He was a native of the county of Westchester [NY].  His loss will be deeply lamented by his family and numerous acquaintance and severely felt by the church to which he belonged.

In Andes [Delaware Co. NY] on the 8th instant, by the Rev. Mr. Chapman, Mr. James Gardner of Newtown, Long Island [NY] to Miss Mary Ann Waterbury of the former place.

Death

At the Winnebago Lake, in the early part of November last. Four Legs a distinguished Chief of the Winnebago Nation.  He was an active, intelligent man and amiable orator.  He generally appeared to feel the stateliness of high rank and aimed to maintain the majestic grandeur and dignity of his exalted station.

In Hamden [Delaware Co. NY] on Friday last, Mr. Benoni Denslow aged about 60 years.

On Wednesday, June 1st, in Zion Church, Morris [Otsego Co. NY] by Rev. F.N. Luson, Rector, assisted by Rev. S.H. Synnott of Poughkeepsie [Dutchess Co. NY], John Worthington of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] to Cora [Lull] daughter of Jonathan M. Lull, Esq.

On Wednesday last, Zion Church was the scene of one of the most fashionable weddings ever witnessed in town.  The first day of summer was a very befitting time for two hearts to be made one and on that day a large and fashionable assembly congregated at the church to witness the marriage of John Worthington of Cooperstown to Miss Cora Lull of this village.  The wedding party were most beautifully and elegantly attired and the church beautifully decorated with flowers. There were several of the F.F.'s from Cooperstown.  The reception after the two had been made one, at the house of J.M. Lull, was a very pleasant affair. The bride is one of our most accomplished young ladies and will lead her fortunate husband a felicitous life.  May the journey of this happy pair through life be a joyful one, nothing occurring to mar or disturb for a single moment their happiness.

At the home of the bride, May 31st by Rev. H.H. Allen, Chas. S. Carpenter to Miss  Hettie E. [Jenks] daughter of James W. Jenks, Esq. all of Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY].

Deaths

In West Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] May 10th, of dropsy, Hannah Niles aged 80 years 4 months and 13 days.

In Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] May 27th, Addison North son of A.M. North of Otego [Otsego Co. NY] aged 6 years and 8 months.

In Laurens [Otsego Co. NY] May 26, of typhoid fever, Sarah P. [Cutler] wife of R.J. Cutler in the 46th year of her age.

On Sunday, May 28th, Thomas Welch a section hand on the A.&S. Road was drowned in the river, about two miles east of Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY].  Deceased slipped from a dam into a deep hole below and not being able to swim, although several men were standing near, drowned almost without an effort for his life.

On Friday last, Coroner Packard, of Unadilla [Otsego Co. NY] came to this village and summoned a jury to sit on the postmortem examination of the body of Mrs. Marsh, who died last February in Colesville, Broome Co. [NY] and was buried in this village [Morris, Otsego Co. NY] Feb. 6th.  The body was disinterred and a postmortem made by Dr. A.C. Bunn. The stomach, liver and other organs were taken out and sent to Dr. C.H. Porter of Albany to be analyzed.  It will be remembered that this lady died very suddenly, and it is now thought that she was poisoned, and circumstances having been brought to light within a short time, warrant the examination being made. The inquest was adjourned to the 19th of July to await the report of the chemist.

Morris Chronicle, Morris, NY, July 13, 1870:  In the matter of the postmortem examination of the remains of Mrs. Marsh, Dr. Porter has notified the coroner, Mr. Packard, that he has failed to discover any poison in the organs sent him for examination and analyzing; consequently, the jury will not be called together on the 19th.
