Deaths

In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 1st inst., Jane Cameron [Barnard] wife of Mr. F.E. Barnard, aged 50 years.  This patient sufferer through a protracted and painful illness, has at last been called to her rest.  It was indeed an edifying scene to witness the meek submission, the trust, the endurance and the fortitude with which this dear disciple of Christ met all her sufferings.  With devout faith did she cling to her Saviour and feel the strength which He alone can supply.  Of a temperament singularly well balanced, firm yet gentle, sound in judgment, constant in friendship, as a wife and mother most devoted, as a friend and neighbor full of acts of substantial but unpretending kindness; her departure creates a melancholy void in all the valued relations of life.  The writer of this sad notice can truly say that a neighborly friendship of more than twenty years was never dimmed by the smallest passing cloud.  Though suffering much and long through an exhausting sickness, she at last passed calmly and quietly away.  The Pastor, the Chruch, the fellow members of the same household of faith, and society, will deeply feel her loss.  May God sustain the stricken household so greatly bereaved, by the comforts and solaces of His grace.

In Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], on the 30th ult., Mrs. Sylvia Snedekir, formerly of this village, aged 87 years.

In this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 14th ult., Clarissa Page, wife of Orrin J. Page, aged 22 years, 9 months and 14 days.

Clarissa has gone to the home of the blest, / To that Home, of all homes the sweetest and best; / Where the wicked from troubling forever shall cease, / And all sighing is hushed, in sweet anthems of peace.

Her sweet face on earth we shall never see more; / All suffering and sorrow, with her is now o'er. / Tho' great is our loss, still greater is her gain / That thought should suffice to banish all pain.

Her seat is now vacant and hushed is her voice / Which so late in the buoyance of youth did rejoice; / But were blest in believing she's gone to that "home sweet home," / Where all who have loved her will finally come.

Mourn not bereaved husband, heave not the deep sigh, / Nor let grief's bitter tear, dim in sadness, the eye, / Submissively bow to "Our Father's " own will / To the wild throbs of sorrow say, "Peace, peace, be still."

Mrs. Addison Miller:  The death of this lady, cast a gloom over the neighborhood in which she lived, never before excelled by any event in its history.  She was an estimable lady, and her husband and friends, and the community generally mourn her untimely fate with heart felt grief.  Her funeral, which occurred on Thursday last, was a mournful one and indicated the love and respect in which she was held, the whole population of Ketchum's Corners and vicinity turning out en masse to pay the last sad rites to her memory. The funeral sermon by Dr. Paddock, of this village, was affecting, and worthy of the aged divine, who delivered it. The death of this lady has deeply afflicted Mr. Miller, and he deeply feels the loss of a wife tenderly loved.  Binghamton Repblican 28th ult.

Death by Drowning:  We have the painful intelligence to announce that the wife of Addison Miller, formerly of this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], and now of Ketchum's Corners, Broome County [NY], came to her death by drowning on Tuesday last.  It appears that Mrs. Miller has been for some time afflicted with periodical attacks of severe pains in the head, which have at times rendered her quite frantic.  On the morning of the day of her death she complained somewhat but thinking nothing serious, her husband went to Binghamton upon business, leaving his wife at home with a little boy.  About 8 o'clock in the evening, she put the child to bed, but after a short time the child arose and not finding his mother in the house, alarmed the neighbors. Search was made, and the body of Mrs. Miller was found quite dead, in a large spring, near the house, into which she had evidently plunged head foremost, while laboring under a temporary aberration of mind induced by the condition of her health.

Death of Joseph L. McCray

In Smithville [Chenango Co., NY], on the 9th inst. of consumption, Mr. Joseph L. McCray, aged 36 years.

In the death of this excellent man and worthy citizen, something more should be said than that he died.  His amiable traits of character were such as to endear him to a large circle of friends.  His strict integrity, his noble and manly characteristics, his charitable disposition made him the beloved of his immediate circle of relatives, and extended their influence over his more extended associations.

His surviving partner and children have sustained an irreparable loss, his associates a worthy exemplar in life, of all the graces that adorn manhood.  It must be said of him that he was a good husband, a kind father, a good citizen.

His funeral was attended from his late residence in Smithville, on the 12th inst., by a large concourse of citizens.  He was buried with masonic honors, under the direction of Eastern Light Lodge, of this village, of which he was a worthy member.  There were present members of the fraternity from Norwich, Oxford, Coventry, and Cortland and Broome Counties, and made an imposing display of more than one hundred members, who assembled to pay their respects to departed worth.

R.P. Barnard, of this village, was Marshal.  Dr. M.M. Wood, Master of Eastern Light Lodge, was present, and at his request, Geo. W. Baker, of this place, officiated as Master, in the solemn burial service.  He performed his part with much ability.  Rev. I.B. Hyde, pastor of the Methodist church in this village, delivered a brief but able funeral discourse.

Everything passed off in admirable order.  It was an occasion that will long be remembered in Smithville.  The Masonic burial service was new to many and seemed to impress all with its solemnity and appropriateness.

Death of Hon. Smith M. Purdy

PURDY:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], March 28th, after a brief illness, Hon Smith M. Purdy, aged 74 years.  The funeral will take place at his late residence, on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

Our community was startled on Monday afternoon by the announcement that Hon. Smith M. Purdy was dead.  Although he had been in feeble health for a number of years, having long since withdrawn from active business, it was not generally known that he was more than usually ill until his death was announced.  Indeed he had not been wholly confined to his house till within a very few days.

Judge Purdy was a son of Abner Purdy, an early pioneer of the County, and was born in North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], on what is known as the Abram Per Lee farm, in July, 1796.  Evincing an aptitude for study, at an early age he came to Norwich to attend a select school, and after pursuing his studies and teaching for a number of terms, at length entered the office of James Birdsall, Esq., then a practicing lawyer of this village.  Admitted to the Bar, he located in Sherburne in 1819, where he remained some eight years in the practice of his chosen profession.

In 1827 he removed to Norwich, receiving the appointment of Attorney for the Bank of Chenango.  About this time he formed a co-partnership with the late Abial Cook, Esq., the firm standing at the head of the legal profession in this section of the State.  In 1833 he was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas and Surrogate in place of Judge Tracy, who was elected Lietu. Governor in 1832.  His health failing him, in 1835, he resigned his office.  In 1837, on account of local matters connected with the building of the Court house, he was unanimously elected Supervisor by both political parties.  In 1838, he removed to his farm at Polkville, which place derived its name from James K. Polk during the memorable political campaign of 1844, where he resided about six years.  During this time, in 1842, he was elected to Congress from the District then comprising the counties of Chenango, Broome and Tioga.  Unwilling to abandon the profession, which by study and ripe experience he was eminently fitted to adorn, soon after his return from Congress, in 1845, he again removed to this village, associating with him his nephew, the late Sherwood S. Merritt, Esq., in the practice of law, the firm continuing till he was elected judge and Surrogate in 1847, under the revised Constitution adopted in 1846.

His term of office having expired, all his public duties well and worthily performed, he retired to private life, where he has since enjoyed a serene and green old age in the bosom of his family and friends, beloved and respected by all.

Few men, probably, when in the vigor of health, had greater powers of endurance or could transact a larger amount of business within a specified time.  Although not of great fluency in debate, his speeches and arguments were always convincing and forcible, and commanded the highest respect.  His honesty and integrity were proverbial, his every act, public and private, prompted by pure motives.  No one before or since his time wearing the judicial ermine, it may be said without disparagement to others, is more eminently entitled to the appellation: "He was a just judge."

He was an economist in the strict sense of that word, and the extravagance and profliency in official station in these latter days, shocked his high sense of honor.

But he has passed away.  Another milestone on the road that connects the past and the present has been taken down.  His record is made up, and worthily, as we trust, hears the endorsement, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Judge Purdy married Prudence Gates in 1821, and she with an only son, Dr. C.M. Purdy, survives him.  They have, by this act of Providence, sustained the loss of a noble husband, kind father and faithful companion.  In their sad bereavement they have the sympathy of the entire community.

The funeral will be held at his late residence on South Main Street, on Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock.

How oft have we bemoan'd departed friends? / As oft has friendship bid us vigils keep. / When on their lids the dew of death descends / We sigh in secret, and in secret weep.

Late on her cheek the rose of health did bloom, / And late we saw her deck the circle gay; / The roses fade, death summons to the tomb, / And on her brow there beams celestial day.

Rest thou in silence. / Tis heaven's decree / That thou, the young, shouldst quit the earthly sphere. / Thy kindred heart shall long in sorrow bleed, / And o'er thy tomb fall many a bursting tear,

Golden Wedding

On the 19th of March, 1820, Charles Wescott, of this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], was united in marriage to Sally Reynolds, in Guilford [Chenango Co., NY].  They settled in the east part of this town, in the neighborhood where Mr. Wescott was born and reared, and there they have ever since resided, respected by the entire community among whom they have passed so many years.

On Saturday last, the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage, there took place at the homestead, a pleasant family reunion, some thirty of their descendants and relatives assembling to congratulate the aged couple, and many valuable tokens of affection and regard were presented them on the occasion.  The day was a happy one for all present, and old and young alike entered heartily into its enjoyment.

Mr. Wescott is now 77 years of age; the age of his wife is 70.  Both enjoy good health, and Mr. W. may be considered a remarkably vigorous man for one of his years.  "Uncle Charles" is well known to all, as an unequalled player upon the fife; and from the time he was ten years of age up to the present writing, a period of sixty-seven years, he has played his favorite instrument at the "masters" and "general trainings" regularly.  Not a year has been missed by him.  He is now a member of the Regimental Band of the 103d Regiment, National Guard, and that he may be spared for years to come, to take his accustomed place in the ranks, is the wish of everyone.

In politics, Mr. Wescott has always been a sound democrat.  He has been a constant subscriber to the Union since its commencement, and to the Journal for many years previous. We hope to welcome him, upon his weekly calls at our office, for a long time to come.

Death of Anson Mead

MEAD:  In North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], Feb. 25th, Mr. Anson Mead, aged 65 years.

Anson Mead, a life long and respected citizen of this County [Chenango Co., NY], died on Thursday last at this residence in North Norwich, after an illness of a few weeks. Deceased was the fourth son of the late Gen. Thompson Mead, and was born scarcely a mile from the spot where he passed his youth, manhood and age.

Mr. Mead was quiet and unobtrusive in his manners, respectful to the judgments of others, yet always entertaining decided views and opinions of his own.  Possessed of a kind heart, with charity for all, he led an exemplary Christian life, and his death creates a vacancy in the community and in the church to which he belonged, not easily filled.  The home circle especially will feel the full force of the shock, for there his excellent qualities shown brightest, there will grief deepest settle down.

Mr. Mead was twice married and leaves a wife in second widowhood. He also leaves a son and two daughters well married and settled in life.  His age was about 65 years.  Of the large family of children reared by Gen. Mead, but two remain, Allen Mead and the wife of  Hon. John F. Hubbard, Sr., both of this village.

Death of Hon. Anson Burlingame

A dispatch form St. Petersburg tells of the death of Hon. Anson Burlingame, in that city, on Tuesday of last week after an illness of four days.  His disease was congestion of the lungs.

Mr. Burlingame was born in New Berlin, Chenango County [NY] in 1822, but his youth was spent on the western frontiers, at one time acting with surveying parties, and at another participating in the making of Indian treaties, far beyond the confines of civilization.  He laid the foundation of his education at the Branch University of Michigan, but, removing to Massachusetts, he entered Harvard University, where he received a degree in 1846.  He studied law and practiced in Boston.  In 1852 he was elected to the State Senate, and in 1853 was a member of the Convention for revising the constitution of Massachusetts.  He was elected a representative from that State in the Thirty-fourth Congress; was re-elected to the Thirty-fifth, serving as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.  He was also re-elected to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving on the same committee.  In 1861 he was appointed by President Lincoln Minister to Austria, and subsequently to China, which latter position he resigned in 1867 to accept a diplomatic appointment from China to the European Powers as well as to the United States.

As such Minister his career has given him a worldwide reputation.  He had established commercial treaties with the United States Government, with England and France, and was perfecting the same arrangements with the Government of the Russian Empire, when death arrested his brilliant career.

Letters of condolence were sent by the Emperor and Empress of Russia to Mrs. Burlingame, who was with her husband.
