Sad Case of Drowning

We are indebted to Coroner Avery for the particulars of a sad case of drowning, which occurred in the Chenango River about half a mile west of Sherburne, on Tuesday night of last week.  Mr. Joseph O. Thorpe started with his team and wagon from the Union Hotel, in Sherburne, about eight o'clock Tuesday evening, for his home in Georgetown, Madison County [NY].  The night was intensely dark, and it appears that upon arriving at the river bridge, about half a mile west of the village, the team not being able to see the track ran the wagon against the side of the bridge, breaking the whiffle tree and pole of the wagon.  The team stopped on the embankment at the end of the bridge, and it is evident that Mr. Thorpe got out of the wagon to learn the extent of the damage, and being unable to see, stepped off the embankment, and fell into the water--the river being swollen so much that the bank near the abutment was covered by about three feet of water, forming a strong current, which swept the unfortunate man out into the stream, where he was drowned. Some persons in passing found the team about nine o'clock the same evening and drove it back to Sherburne. Search was commenced at once for the missing man; and his body was found about noon on Wednesday, about one hundred rods below the bridge.  Coroner Avery was notified and held an inquest on Thursday.  Deceased was about forty-seven years of age and leaves a wife and one son.

Had the approaches to the bridge been properly guarded by railings, the accident could not have occurred; and we can't forbear saying, that neglect to provide protection at such points against the recurrence of similar casualties ought to subject those who are responsible for the neglect to the severest penalties.

These principles stamped upon his heart, accompanied by an unswerving integrity made him an example and a favorite with his fellow men.  In this bereavement society has lost a worthy member, and his partner and family have the sincere sympathy of all their acquaintance.

In this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 28th ult. Mrs. Abigail Bates, aged 95 years and 5 months.

The deceased was an early resident of this town having come here at an early day.  She was one of the last survivors of that body of early settlers in this region, who remember it as a wilderness, and who knew of the privations of that early period when the inhabitants were scattered and remote from each other.  Possessed of a strong constitution, of industrious, simple habits, of cheerful temper, imbued with the spirit of genuine piety, Mrs. Bates lived the spirit of genuine piety.  Mrs. Bates lived honored and esteemed by all who knew her.  Towards the closing period of her life her mind broke down and delirium clouded her view of those blessed hopes to which for so many years she had clung.  But even in her mental wanderings the habit of prayer remained to her, and we doubt not she now sees with a celestial vision Him on whom she trusted as her devine strength and redeemer.

A Remarkable Family - Davis Family Reunion

Many years ago, a Mr. Davis migrated from the Eastern States and settled in this county [Chenango Co., NY], having a farm, and keeping a public house, five miles east of Sherburne village, forty years.  He raised ten children, eight boys and two girls, all of whom are still living [in 1865].  One of the sons, Reuben, still lives in this county, and the other children are scattered in different parts of the State.  Mrs. H.W. Coon, of Syracuse [Onondaga Co., NY], is a daughter of Reuben Davis, and the brothers made arrangements to meet at her house, as the most central and easy point of access, for a reunion, which took place some ten days ago. The eight brothers had their photograph taken in a group. Their ages amount in the aggregate to the extraordinary sum of 526 years, being an average of 65 years and nine months each. Each of the boys remained with their father until 21 years old, and although all of them were brought up in a hotel, neither of them ever smoked or chewed tobacco, or ever was intoxicated. They are all farmers, and well off in worldly goods. Such a family is seldom raised, and less seldom meet under such circumstances after having been once scattered.  One of the sisters lives in Ohio, and the other in California.

___________________________________________

The above is concluded to be about the family of Reuben and Mehitable (Saxton) Davis who settled in Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY prior to 1800.  They were reported to be the parents of 13 children including 10 sons (Harry/Henry, Orlando, Horatio, Reuben Jr., George, William, Norman, Hiram, John, William 2nd) and three daughters (Fannie, Julia Ann, Mary).  At the time of the 1865 reunion, ten children survived.  Two sons (William & John) died in 1813 and a daughter (Fannie) died in 1829.  The following was written about the family on the occasion of the Sherburne Centennial Celebration in 1893. [USGenWeb, Chenango Co., NY]

"Reuben Davis came from Somers, Conn., to Sherburne, in Feb. 1798, and settled on the farm afterwards owned by Edgar Baldwin.  He lived there but a short time, then moved to where Jacob Reese now resides [in 1893], and from there to the eastern part of the town on the old turnpike leading to Columbus, and kept an Inn, where the general elections for the town were sometimes held....He had married Mehitable Sexton, a sister of Frederic Sexton, Sr. and thirteen children were born to them, ten boys and three girls.  Two of the boys died young.  Seven of the sons lived to be over seventy, and three to be over eighty.  All were raised in a hotel and not one was ever known to be intoxicated or to use tobacco; all became men of some means.  Eleven of the children married and had families...."

Shocking Murder in Brookfield [Madison Co., NY]

Chenango American, Greene, NY, December 21, 1865

On Thursday last (Thanksgiving Day) a most atrocious murder was perpetrated in the town of Brookfield, Madison Co. [NY].  It appears that an aged couple, named Crandall, resided on the road leading south from Leonardsville to New Berlin (near a place known as Coontown) living entirely alone with the exception of a hired man, who was gone to Utica to spend Thanksgiving Day. At about five o'clock in the evening a couple of men entered Mr. Crandall's home, and boldly confronted the old gentleman, commanded him to inform them of the whereabouts of some money belonging to the man in his employ, and which they professed to know was secreted in the house.  Mr. Crandall indignantly refused.  Finding intimidation useless, they seized Mr. Crandall, and telling him they knew that he had a large amount of money secreted, threatened him with instant death if he refused to inform them where it could be found.  At this point, old Mrs. Crandall, who had been in an adjoining room, becoming alarmed rushed into the room and discovered the situation of her husband, raised cries of alarm and calls for assistance, at the same time attacking the villains with a broom stick.  At this demonstration, one of the rascals is supposed to have drawn a revolver and deliberately fired at the old lady, with almost immediate mortal effect. The wretches then beat Mr. Crandall with a club or chair about the head until he was rendered insensible and, leaving him for dead, proceeded to search the house for money to the amount of $3,000, which was understood to be secreted there. The wretches thoroughly searched the house to no purpose.  Mr. C. had quite a respectable sum of money in his pockets when attached by the villains, none of which was taken. The house was search with the closest scrutiny, drawers, boxes, trunks, chests, &c, being ransacked throughout the house. The money, which was in U.S. Bonds, and was secreted between the straw and feather ticks of one of the beds was unmolested.

Mrs. Crandall was buried on Sunday last, and her funeral was attended by a large and sympathetic gathering of relatives and friends.

The Utica Observer of Monday evening states that at the latest advices, Mr. Crandall was alive, with some probability of his ultimate recovery.  About an hour after the departure of the murderers, Mr. C. became conscious, and fully realizing the horrors of the whole affair and his necessity for medical aid, by an almost superhuman effort, procured his lantern and walked nearly a mile across the fields to the residence of his brother, where he narrated the particulars of the crime and procured assistance.

A Jury was empaneled, and a Coroner's inquest commenced on Saturday.  No additional facts were elicited, and no clue has been gained by which the perpetrators of the dreadful deed may be identified.

The Crandall Murder

Chenango American, Greene, NY, December 28, 1865

Two men, says the Chenango Union of yesterday, were arrested at Auburn last week who were suspected of being the parties guilty of the Crandall murder at Coontown.  On being taken to the latter place, Mr. Crandall failed to identify them, when they returned to Auburn to answer to a charge of theft, that being the accusation under which they were arrested.

Telegraph & Chronicle, Norwich, NY, August 28, 1867

We find the following paragraph in the Brookfield correspondence of the Oneida Union.

Henry D. Crandall has been summoned to Auburn Prison, to see a man supposed to be the murderer of Mrs. Crandall.  He recognized him at once as one of the men who assaulted him and murdered his wife.  He even shows the scars on his head where they hit him with his cudgel.  Crandall is positive there is no mistake in the identity.  He says he knows he is the man.  He will be taken from prison and tried for murder.

Thus, has suddenly, after a few weeks sickness, passed to her heavenly home, one who was endeared to a large circle of friends in this community, by her many noble qualities of character.  Faithful in all the relations of life, as a Christian disciple, as a daughter, sister and friend, she has left many saddened hearts to grieve over her early departure hence.  Full of life, energy, joyousness, self-sacrificing where duty called her, a strong prop in the household relationships, ready for any duties which claimed her attention, she fulfilled the requisition of the wise man of Proverbs, whatsoever thy hand badeth to do, do it with thy might.  Genial, frank, confiding in her disposition she readily won and retained the confidence of those whom she called friends.  The natural attributes of her character pervaded her religious life.  She had none of the affections of piety, yet with the deep earnestness of her nature she was most devoted to the Church of her affections.  And in the enjoyment of the solaces which that Church furnishes she passed through "the grave and gate of death" with a joyful hope through her Redeemer, of a Resurrection unto life. The respect and esteem felt for her were manifested by the attendance of a very large number of friends at the funeral services.  "If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleeps in Jesus will God bring with him."

The vessel in which he sailed form Hong Kong to Swartow on the coast of China, is supposed to have foundered under one of those Typhoons which sweep to destruction all vessels that lie in their track.  Mr. Halsey had been engaged in his business as photographer, taking sketches of the scenery of that but partially known country and was pursuing this vocation, having his materials with him for extending the number of his pictures, at the time he was lost.

At Portsmouth, Va., Sept. 26th, 1865, of quick consumption, Mr. Daniel D. Clark, late of the U.S. Navy, aged 33 years, He was formerly from Smithville [Chenango Co., NY]

"Yet again we hope to meet thee, / When the day of life is fled, / Then, in heaven, with joy to greet thee / Where no farewell tear is shed."

At Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, on the 23d ult., Dea. John F. Smith, of Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY] aged 73 years.

Distressing Accident

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, December 15, 1869

A dispatch to his friends in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], gives the sorrowful intelligence that Schuyler F. Wade, who left this place about three months since to take a position as conductor of a freight train on one of the Missouri railroads, has met with a fearful accident, necessitating the amputation of one of his limbs.  It is supposed that the accident happened on the railroad, although no particulars have yet been received.  Mr. Geo. W. Marvin, step-father to Mr. Wade, immediately started for the scene of the accident, and telegraphed back on Friday last that one of Schuyler's limbs had been amputated, but that he was doing as well as could be expected; a subsequent dispatch from him, however, is not so hopeful.  The precise date of the accident is not known here, but it is supposed to have occurred on Tuesday or Wednesday of last week.  The news of this dreadful accident was a sad blow to his family, who reside in this place, and to the whole community who are his friends.

Death of Schuyler F. Wade

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, December 22, 1869

We are pained to announce that Schuyler F. Wade, whose injuries upon a Missouri railroad we mentioned last week, died on Wednesday evening last.  His remains were brought to this place [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] on Monday, by Mr. Marvin.

Mr. Wade was Conductor on a freight train and being on top of one of the cars while descending a steep grade, was thrown from the car by the shock caused by the engineer having reversed the engine; he fell between the cars, his leg having been caught between the "bumpers," and crushed.  As soon as the cars parted, he swung himself clear from the train and was shortly after found, stunned by his terrible injuries and with his head partially lying in a pool of water.  It was found necessary to amputate his limb, which was done, and it was at first thought that he would recover; but he gradually sank and died, as we have stated, on Wednesday last.  His sad fate is universally lamented.  His age was 21 years.  A widow survives him.

Small Pox in Coventry

We made a brief reference last week to the reported cases of small pox in Coventry.  We have more recent and reliable information that the disease is not spreading, and no new cases are reported.  The only cases to this date are the two sons of Mr. Clark N. Smith, who resides about three miles south of Coventryville, the elder of whom, Deloss [Smith], died of the disease on Wednesday last. the younger brother is convalescent.  John Spicer who was at work for Mr. Smith, is now very sick with the disease at the house of the latter.  It is supposed that the disease was taken in New York, while Mrs. Smith with her two sons were in that city a few weeks since.  Mrs. Smith as yet has no symptoms of the disease.  Deloss, the son who died, was recently a student in the Academy at this place [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], and his loss is a severe blow to his family and friends to whom he was much endeared.

Since the above was in type, we learn that Mr. Spicer died on Sunday night last.  Oxford Times

Drowning of Miss Dunbar

Smyrna, Nov. 24, 1869

Editor Chenango Union:  In the last issue of the Union I notice some important misstatements in regard to the case of drowning in this town.  The facts of the case are about as follows:

On Saturday, November 20, about noon, the unfortunate young lady, Miss Dunbar, started from the house of Mr. Solomon Billings in the northern part of the town, for her mother's residence in Upperville.  But a short distance from the residence of Mr. Billings she found the bridge taken up (it being considered unsafe) and attempted to ford the stream, which, much swollen by the rain of the morning, was so powerful as to baffle the efforts of the horse to cross, and it is supposed the lady was instantly drowned.  In about an hour after she started, the horse was discovered in the field, destitute of buggy, with thills still attached and much chilled by being long in the water.  Immediate search was made for the body, and within a short time scores of men were on the spot, eagerly engaged in the search, but their efforts proved unavailing until Sunday morning, when it was discovered about half a mile down the stream.  A Coroner's inquest was held, but no additional facts were elicited.  It was not known at Mr. Billings' that the bridge was impassible, and the lady probably did not realize the depth of the stream and the velocity of the current; consequently, no blame can be attached to anyone.  It is one of the most melancholy accidents that has occurred in this town for a long time.

Yours, &c. A.A. Taylor

OLENDORF: In Afton [Chenango Co., NY], October 30th, after a lingering illness of eight weeks, Mr. Henry Olendorf, aged 87 years, 2 months and 5 days.

Mr. Olendorf was one of the first settlers in this part of the country.  He moved here from South Carolina, in 1812; made a brief stop at or near Cooperstown, Otsego County; thence settled at what is known as the Ferry, near where Nineveh now stands.  He was in the mercantile and lumbering business at or near that place for a number of years; then he left his former business and took to the plough.  He was one of the best farmers in this section of the country.  He was strictly temperate, and industrious in his habits.

He was a life-long Democrat, always active in getting out all Democrats to the polls, but never wishing any office himself.  He once held the office of Justice of the Peace in the town of Bainbridge, which office he filled with credit to himself and all concerned.  He was urged at different times to take the nomination of Assemblyman in his District, but refused, preferring to follow the plough than to mingle in the halls of legislation.  He was a great reader and had collected a respectable library of some of the choicest books of his day, both historical and religious.  He was a great admirer of the Cooperstown Freeman's Journal, of which he was a subscriber for over 50 years, and only discontinued it when his sight failed, so that he could not read.  For the last five or six years he was almost blind.  He was a great admirer of our honored statesman, Horatio Seymour, and always voted for him for Governor of New York, whenever he was a candidate for that office.  Although very feeble, he wished to be carried to the polls last year, that he might cast his last vote for the Democratic candidate for President, Horatio Seymour.

WELCH:  Killed, at the Lyon Brook Bridge, Nov. 10th, Mr. Patrick Welch, aged 23 years.

A sad and fatal casualty occurred at Lyon Brook Bridge on Wednesday morning of last week.  Some workmen had balanced a long and heavy piece of the iron frame work on what is called a "buggy," two of them pulling it along by a rope attached in front, and a man named Welch steadying it in the rear, and in this manner they were conveying it out to the end of one of the unfinished bents, onto the end of one of the unfinished bents, when, in passing over some obstruction on the plank, the iron was caused to sway, and it is supposed that in attempting to steady it Welch was thrown from the plank and precipitated upon the rocks beneath, a distance of forty feet, killing him instantly.

Coroner Avery held an inquest over the body, which elicited the following particulars:  The left arm and right hip were fractured, and the skull was crushed in a horrible manner.  Death ensued instantly.

Deceased resided in Buffalo [Erie Co., NY], and had formerly been a sailor.  He had been at work on the bridge for several weeks and is spoken of as a respectable and worthy man, and one of the best workmen in the Company's employ.  He went to Buffalo to vote on election day and was married in Buffalo during his absence.  He returned and went to work again on Monday the 8th inst. and met his death in the manner we have described, on Wednesday, the 10th.  The news of his horrible death must have been a sad blow to his wife and friends.  His body was taken to Buffalo for interment.

A Man Burned to Death in Oswego [Oswego Co., NY]:  James Shepard, of Oswego, was horribly burned to death last Thursday morning.  It seems that about one o'clock a barn adjoining the hotel where Mr. Shepard was stopping and owned by a brother, took fire and was consumed with several valuable horses.  The inmates of the hotel did not awake until that building had taken fire, and then they had barely time to escape with their lives.  Mr. Shepard succeeded in getting out safely with the rest, but almost immediately returned to save his clothing and valuables.  He was not seen again alive.  His charred body was found at the foot of a flight of stairs leading from the first to the second story of the hotel.  A bundle of his clothing lay nearby.  The body was lying face downwards with the hands drawn up to the head. The back of the head and the face were badly burned and blistered, and the left hand almost entirely burnt off.  A portion of the left side and back were also burned and blistered. The body presented a shocking sight.  Mr. S. was about sixty years old and much respected by all.

Sad Case of Drowning:  We are informed that a young woman named Dunbar, was accidentally drowned in the town of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY] on Saturday last.  It appears that she was driving a team on the road between Smyrna and Sherburne, and in attempting to ford a stream about a mile east of Smyrna, (the bridge having been carried off and the stream swollen by the rains on Saturday) she was by some means not known, thrown from the wagon and drowned.  There was no person present at the time of the sad occurrence, and consequently nothing certain is known as to how the accident occurred. The team and wagon were found near the crossing about noon on the day of the accident, and a thorough search was immediately made for the body, but up to Monday afternoon it had not been recovered. We have been unable to gather any further particulars.
