Durward Evans Wins Scholarship, 1907

As a result of the competitive examination held in the Court House Saturday, the first day of June, Durward Evans has been awarded the Cornell scholarship from this Assembly district.  Two other contestants tried the examination, Mr. Quinn of the Sherburne High School, and Robert Wait, of Norwich.  Mr. Evans is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Evans, of Norwich, and a graduate of Norwich High school in the class of 1907.  He was the valedictorian of his class, having maintained the highest standing in all of his studies during his four years course in the school..  Mr. Evans is receiving the congratulations of many friends who hope that his future career may bring to him the greater honors which he bids fair to deserve.

Durward R. Evans passed away at St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell Tuesday afternoon, May 17, 1960, following a lingering illness.  He was 70 years old.  Mr. Evans was born in Norwich, New York, the son of Randall and Amy (Aldrich) Evans.  He graduated from Cornell University in 1911, where he received a B.S. in chemistry.  Also in 1911 he married his wife, Hazel Ailken of Ithaca.  For over 30 years he was associated with Western Electric, retiring in 1952 as Chief Chemist of the Kearny Plant of Western Electric at Kearny, N.J.,  Since his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Evans have made their home at Alfred.  He is survived by his wife, Hazel; four daughters:  Mrs. Vincent Smith of Alfred, Mrs. Crawford  Thayer of Fort Atkinson, Wis., Mrs. Joseph Frosberg of Burbank, Calif., and Mrs. Dwight Smith of Falmouth, Mo; one son, Ralph Evans of Indianapolis, Ind.; seventeen grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Maud Whiting of Clearwater, Fla., Mrs. Merebeth Dunckel of Norwich, N.Y., and Mrs. Mabel Warner of Clearwater, Fla.
