Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]: The soldiers of the Twenty-third Regiment, United States troops, encamped in Norwich on Saturday last, on the way to Binghamton, where they entrained Wednesday to go to Mount Gretna, Pa., for the summer. The main body of the troops arrived in Norwich a few minutes after 10 o'clock on Saturday morning, several of the officers having preceded them by an hour or more. The infantry were footsore after the 16-mile jaunt from Sherburne, and those among the crowd of spectators awaiting their arrival who expected to see them in dress parade order and uniforms were disappointed. The series of illustrations herewith tell the story better than words can picture it. Many flags were unfurled in honor of the soldiers and they were given a glad welcome. The officers were entertained at the Norwich Club, and during the day there were many visitors to the camp on the shore of the Canasawacta creek. The visitors were hospitably received and learned many things about the camp life of soldiers in real warfare. Thousands of sample bits of hardtack were carried away as souvenirs of the day the soldiers spent in Norwich.
