Prof. James St. Lawrence
Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]: Many local disciples of Terpsichore owe their skill in the art of dancing to the instructions received under Prof. James St. Lawrence, who has become well known as a worthy successor to the fabled muse who presided at ancient social functions. For 23 years Prof. St. Lawrence has made his residence in Norwich and for 20 years has conducted dancing classes here and in Oxford. The present season his classes have numbered over 150 members. On Monday evening of last week he closed a most successful series of lessons in Oxford with a delightful hop in the Citizens Opera House, a company of Norwich people joining in the festivities. Prof. St. Lawrence maintains his standing as an instructor by keeping abreast of the times in his calling. Each year he receives instruction in the new steps and dances from Prof. Bass of Utica, one of the best-known and most efficient dancing masters in this section. Prof. St. Lawrence is about 45 years old and in addition to his ability as an instructor is a skilled musician, the violin being his favorite instrument.
