Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Martha Davis, widow of Albert Davis, whose death occurred last September, passed away at her home on Guernsey street on Thursday morning of last week.  During a long illness of several years' duration Mrs. Davis had been tenderly and faithfully cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Race. She was 80 years of age.  Deceased was the daughter of Ezra and Abigail Gibbs and was born July 26, 1831, in the town of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], where a large share of her life was spent.  With her deceased husband she had been a resident of Norwich for nearly 30 years.  Their marriage was solemnized in Sherburne May 26, 1863.  Besides Mrs. Race there is another daughter, surviving, Mrs. W.G. Mandeville, of Lowville, and four sisters, Mrs. Edson Winson and Mrs. Roscoe Arnold, of Mt. Upton;  Mrs. Delos Arnold, of Preston, and Mrs. Amelia Windsor, of Norwich.  Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, Rev. Paul Riley Allen and Dr. Moses DeWitt Fuller officiating.  Interment was made in Mount Hope Cemetery [Norwich, NY].  [Glen Buell Collection, Guernsey Memorial Library, Norwich, NY]

David Shattuck, for many years well known in railroad and business circles in Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], died at his home on North Broad street on Tuesday, aged 78.  Death was due to apoplexy.  Mr. Shattuck was the son of John and Mary Knapp Shattuck and was born in Norwich July 26, 1834.  After attending Oxford Academy and spending a few years on the farm, Mr. Shattuck engaged in construction work on the old New York & Oswego Midland Railroad in the promotion of which his father was one of the pioneers.  He helped to run the first locomotive to cross Lyon Brook bridge, which spanned at a great height the stream where as a lad he found his favorite fishing.  Later, after running trains upon the Auburn branch, he was in charge of the crew that dismantled that section of the road.  He then became a conductor on the main line and for many years was on passenger runs between Norwich and Utica and Norwich and Oswego.  In 1890 he quit the railroad service to become the landlord of the Eagle Hotel.  After several years in the hotel business he retired to the homestead farm at Haynes, where he lived until two years ago, when he became a resident of Norwich.  For many years Mr. Shattuck was a prominent member of the Masonic bodies of Norwich.  He was among the oldest past commanders of Norwich Commandery.  Knights Templar.  In politics he was a Democrat and had been frequently named by his party for important offices.  Mr. Shattuck was twice married.  His first wife, Harriett Noble, of Oxford, to whom he was married September 19, 1855, died December 29, 1864.  September 19, 1866 he married Rachel Comstock, daughter of Abel and Esther Comstock, of Norwich, who survives him.  He is also survived by a son, John D. Shattuck, of Dudley Park, Pa., who is general manager of the Suburban Gas Company of Philadelphia, and one daughter, Harriet, wife of Louis G. Quackenbush, of Oneida.  Another daughter, Edith, wife of Bertrand Wait, died less than a year ago.  Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in charge of Norwich Commandery, K.T., Rev. Norwich [Chenango Co., NY^]:  At her home on South Broad street, Wednesday, March 6, occurred the death of Anna Brennan, aged 51, wife of William H. Brennan, after an illness of nearly two years.  Mrs. Brennan was born November 11, 1860, in Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], the daughter of Francis and Sarah Weldon.  She was married November 24, 1876, and the greater part of her married life had been spent in this village.  Besides her husband she leaves three daughters, Mrs. J.W.Turner, Miss Lila Brennan and Mrs. Leon Young, of Norwich;  also her mother, Mrs. Patrick Preston, and three sisters, Mrs. W.S. Dart, Mrs. F.D. Lobdell and Mrs. Charles Fagan, all of Sherburne. The funeral was held at her late home Saturday morning, with services later at St. Paul's Church, Rev. Father Prendergast officiating. The remains were interred in St. Paul's Cemetery [Norwich, NY].  [Glen Buell Cemetery, Guernsey Memorial Library, Norwich, NY]
