Deaths

We learn that on Friday last, Garrett Quackenbush while engaged in pealing bark near Davenport Center [Delaware Co. NY] was instantly killed by a tree falling across his neck.  The tree in its fall, hit and knocked down a man who was also pealing bark, but he received no serious injury.  We understand that the deceased was marred about a week before his death.

We learn from the Daily Republican of Tuesday, that Mr. Chas. Collins, Sen. an old gentleman residing about five miles southwest of Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] started to go after his cow just before the severe storm on Saturday the 3d inst.  The hour of 9 having arrived and Mr. C. not returning, his wife became alarmed and search was made.  About 11 o'clock, he was found lying dead in a shop belonging to a Mr. Wilson, some half a mile from his own house.  It is supposed that when the shower commenced, Mr. Collins hurried forward and entered the shop to be sheltered from the rain and that this unusual exertion caused his death, it being the opinion of Dr. Jefferies, who was called in to see his body, that he died of an affection of the heart.  He was 71 years old.  He was an old resident of this county and highly esteemed by all who knew him.  Binghamton Standard
