The deceased fell a victim to the consumption and although suffering the debility and languor which usually accompany that gradually wasting disease, yet she was sustained in an uncommon degree by the power of Christian patience and fortitude.

Possessed naturally of strong energy of character, she was enabled in reliance upon divine strength to bear up to the last with firmness and was confined to a couch of prostration but one entire day and that the last of her existence.  She looked calmly forward to the time of her departure and with meek resignation to the divine will, yielded her soul to the Redeemer.  "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

At the residence of John Morrisey in Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY] Dec. 23d of consumption, Thomas J. Welch aged 21 years.

A sad accident occurred in the northern part of this town last Thursday evening, which resulted in the death of William Carroll.  It appears that Mr. Carroll attended a wood bee in the afternoon at the house of a neighbor about a mile from his own home.  He told his wife before going, that he must see another neighbor after the bee before returning home.  He started early in the evening across lots and not making his appearance at home that night, search was made for him the following morning.  He had gone towards the neighbor's house as far as a small piece of woods and then evidently changed his mind.  His tracks were plainly visible in the snow, and they were found to lead to the woods and then return in nearly the same direction.  The path led just above a ledge of rocks some ten or twelve feet high and it appears that Mr. C. Slipped, striking his head against a stone and then rolled over the rocks.  When found he was still alive, but insensible.  Both feet were frozen, and the skull probably fractured.  He died on Friday.  Rep. & Dem.

Deaths

Mr. Nehemiah Hinds, one of the oldest settlers of the town of Otsego [Otsego Co. NY], died at his residence in the northern part of the town on Saturday morning last.  He had been confined to his bed for two or three years past on account of a broken leg, suffering untold tortures, which he bore with a patience rarely equaled.  He was a man of sterling integrity, untiring industry and was universally respected.  His descendants are numbered among our most substantial and intelligent citizens.  His age was about 85 years.  Reb. & Dem.

Joel Bragg an old and respected citizen of Unadilla [Otsego Co. NY] died on Monday morning, the10th inst. at his residence in Unadilla, aged eighty-six years.  He was one of the few remaining gentlemen of "the olden time," of iron constitution and will, physical energy and perseverance almost to the lastest day of his life.  One of the early pioneers, he has, in buildings and improvements left many monuments to his own memory.  His funeral was held on the 13th at St. Matthew's Church, of which he was for a long time a communicant and the Masonic Fraternity conducted the burial service which hid forever from sight an "ancient" and honorable member of their order.

In Otsego [Otsego Co. NY] January 10th, in the 80th year of his age, John Williams one of the oldest and most respected inhabitants of Pierstown [Otsego Co. Mr. Hunt moved from the state of Vermont some fifty years since to the then wilderness of the Susquehanna Valley and located himself on the spot of ground where he has ever since resided and where he now lies beneath the clods of the valley.  He was, for a great number of years one of the most active and influential men of that section of the country and was frequently elected to places of honor and distinction.  He was a member of the constitutional convention of 1821 and was for many years Supervisor of the old town of Unadilla which then comprised the present town of Otego.  His mind and judgment was as good until within a few hours of his death as it ever was, but he has gone from amongst us, and his place is left vacant.

A monument has been erected by the citizens of Elmira [Chemung Co. NY] over the remains of Col. John Hendy who died on the 15th of March 1849, aged 82 years.  He was a "revolutionary officer, a brave soldier, a faithful citizen and an honest man."  He was one of the oldest settlers in that region and the first white man who raised a crop of grain in the valley of the Chemung.

News Item

Extract from a letter, dated at Stockton, California, Aug. 20, 1849, from Henry I. Wilson to his father in this town [Cooperstown, Otsego Co. NY].

"There are thousands more in the mines that are not paying their actual expenses.  Some of the supposed wise ones have said that there was gold enough in California to keep the whole nation digging for a century, but in my humble opinion, in six months from this time there will be thousands of men willing to work for $2 per day.  There was a time, it is true, a man could make a good deal of money in this country, but that time is passed now, and there are fortunes yet to be made, but it requires capitol in the hands of a good financier.  A friend of mine, the other day told me he had purchased $14,000 worth of flour at $6 per barrel.  In the transaction he will undoubtedly realize some $20,000 profit.

"I have seen a Mr. Devoe and a Mr. Thayer from Cooperstown.  They have been digging about 6 weeks and as yet they have made nothing - not even their expenses, and they are completely discouraged.  I suppose out of every 10 that have arrived in this country for the last five months there will not be three that will have $100 at the end of the year.  In regard to my own affairs, it is neither "which nor t'other." I cannot complain, neither can I say that fortune has smiled on me.  I have thus far been blessed with good health and as long as that continues, I shall be perfectly satisfied."

In Hartwick [Otsego Co. NY] Dec. 31st, Mrs. Irene Potter wife of Mr. Irving Potter, aged 38 years.

The disease that terminated the mortal existence of this valuable citizen, was inflammation of the lungs.  Her sickness was short, but severe; yet borne with Christian patience.  The deceased was a native of Hartwick village.  When about seventeen years of age, she became a subject of divine grace, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist Church in her native village by Rev. Nathan Bundy, then pastor of the church.  In the fellowship of this church, she lived and died., esteemed for her uniform and prudent course of life.  She lived with her husband about 22 years, leaving her companion and 2 children to mourn her loss.  It is not too much to say of a deceased friend, that she was an affectionate wife, a kind mother, an obliging neighbor and a consistent Christian.  After five days of suffering she peacefully fell asleep in Jesus.  Her funeral was attended Jan 2d by a large congregation, when her Pastor, Rev. J.B Pixley, preached a sermon from 2 Peter, 2 chap. 9 verse, "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the Godly."

We learn that a man named Bowen a resident of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] and a harness maker by trade, was drowned in the Lake at Cooperstown on Friday night last and as we learn them, the following are the circumstances:  He in company with others went upon the ice for the purpose of fishing and after setting his hooks started for shore and instead of keeping near the shore as did his companions, he ventured to go directly off, and the ice being very thin broke through, and it was snowing so fast and was so blustering that his companions could not find him, but could hear his crises.  He was found in forty feet of water on Saturday.  He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his untimely death.

Olin, Esq. who left our village for Wisconsin about two years since, will learn with profound regret that he is dead.  He died at Baraboo on the 31st ult. after a brief illness.  His characteristics, both intellectual and moral, were of the most promising kind, and while they secured the affection of his circle of personal acquaintances, they commanded the respect of all.  That they were right in anticipating an honorable and useful career for their young friend is apparent from the testimony borne by his recent associates to his worth as a man and his merits as an aspirant to professional honors.  That his career in his new home had been so distinguished by energy and public spirit, and by the exhibition of so many personal and professional excellences as are ascribed to him by his western friends in the testimonials below, is a source of gratification to his friends here, and of consolation under this painful bereavement.  Girard Pa. Republican of Nov. 27.

Death of Edgar W. Olin:  It is with pain that we record this week the death of our young and talented County Clerk, Edgar W. Olin, who died on Saturday last of a disease of the brain.  His illness was short, having been confined to his bed only two weeks previous to his death; although he had at times for several months past suffered from pain in the head, only until one week before the sad event occurred where his symptoms such as to give evidence of a fatal character.

Mr. Olin, during his short residence of ten months in this village, had endeared himself to a large circle of friends and won the respect of all with whom he had dealings.  During the short period of his illness anxiety was felt for his recovery even by those who were but casually acquainted with him, and the announcement of his death, though not unexpected to those in this immediate neighborhood, was heard with grief by all.

From our personal acquaintance with the deceased, we feel qualified to bear testimony to his nobility of character, his unusual powers of intellect, his unflinching firmness and his perfect integrity.  these qualifications, together with temperate and regular habits of life, and a courteous dignity of manner peculiarly fitted him for the responsible station which he so faithfully filled.  For his years, the deceased was remarkedly well read, especially in the history of the great political issues of the day.  A retentive memory and diligent study had made him master of a greater amount of facts and arguments upon questions of public policy or morals than we remember ever to have met with anywhere else in one so young.  Yet the arena of politics did not receive his exclusive attention.  The standard authors in literature and philosophy possessed strong attractions for his active and comprehensive mind, and a well stored intellect repaid his indefatigable labors in the pursuit of knowledge.  His leading trait, however, we may perhaps say, was his intellectuality which was manifested in his choice of reading, of associates, and in his conversation.  His very unusual promise in this respect betokened a brilliant future, which a wiser Power has seen fit to unfold in another world.

In the three told capacity of public officer, citizen and friend, the loss of Mr. Olin will be widely and deeply felt.  He died in the faithful discharge of his official duties and leaves behind him an enviable name for mental vigor and manly deportment, an unblemished reputation and an elevating influence in both public and private life.  Baraboo Republic

Edgar W Olin was a brother to the Rev Wm. Olin, who formerly resided in this village [Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY]

Death

Died in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY] on Saturday evening the 8th instant, Mrs. Lucinda Backus aged 30 years, wife of Capt. John Backus, formerly of Norwich, Connecticut.

In Mrs. Backus were concentrated all those amiable virtues and accomplishments which adorn and dignify the female character.  She was mild and placid, intelligent and interesting, and ever preserved, amidst many trials and afflictions, the most happy equanimity of temper and disposition.  The deceased had suffered under a pulmonary complaint for nearly two years, which she bore with a fortitude and resignation, truly characteristic of the real Christian.  She was a pious and exemplary member of the Episcopal Church in this village and died relying upon that hope which afford the fullest assurance of exchanging the cares and sorrows incident to this life, for that of a happy eternity in heaven, where the "wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are at rest."  On Monday last her mortal remains were consigned to the tomb amid the tears and regrets of a large number of afflicted friends and acquaintances.

"Hark! she bids her friends adieu; / Some angel calls her to the spheres; / Our eyes the radiant saint pursue / Through liquid telescopes of tears.

Farewell! bright soul, a short farewell, / Tell we shall meet again above, / In the sweet groves where pleasures dwell / And trees of life bear fruits of love."

On the flyleaf of a copy of Eastman's History of New York, he had written with his own hand, some three or four years before his death, the following memoranda:

"I, William Root, was in the battle at White Plains, under General Washington, Oct. 28, 1776.  I was in the battle under General Gates on the 7th of October 1777, and soon after, saw Burgoyne's whole army lay down their arms and march out, prisoners of war.  I was in the battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778.  I was in the battle at the storming of Stony Point, under General Wayne, July 16, 1779, where I was shot through my frock on both sides, and through my hat, and my gun barrel cut off by grape shot.  Nine men out of 16 were killed in my platoon."

Richfield Springs, Otsego Co. NY:  Dr. Horace Mauley known as one of the most noted characters in this county [Otsego Co. NY], died at Richfield Springs on the 22d ult aged 87 years.  Bailey's History of Richfield says of him:

Horace Mauley was born in the town of Norway, Herkimer County, N.Y. March 28th, 1791; followed the ordinary employments of his father's farm and attended school until the age of nineteen, when he commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. Ayres of East Canada Creek, town of Manheim [Herkimer Co. NY], which he continued several years and finally graduated at Fairfield Medical College in the winter of 1814-15.  He served for a time in the army as Assistant Surgeon.

In the year 1816 Dr. Mauley located at Monticello in the town of Richfield for the practice of medicine and surgery.  He devoted himself to his profession with characteristic zeal and assiduity and in a few months found himself enjoying the rich reward of an extensive and lucrative business.  In 1820, he bought an acre of land embracing what is now the Manley Spring on the ground of the Spring House for which he paid $75 and erected a dwelling home for his family.  He proceeded at once to prepare the Spring for public use.  the Spring soon began to attend public attention, but the duties of his profession requiring his attention, the doctor sold his property, including the Spring, to a Mr. Chase and purchased the land recently occupied by him, a short distance to the east of the Spring on the south side of Main Street.  He leaves one son and three daughters.

Double Wedding

The marriage of Mr. Ira E. Briggs of Buffalo [Erie Co. NY] to Miss Mame Hosely of this village [Friendship, Allegany Co. NY], on Wednesday the 16th inst. was an event of delightful interest not alone to the contracting parties, but to all classes of our citizens.  The occasion received additional interest in the marriage at the same time of the brother of the bridegroom, Rev. E.R.D. Briggs a popular young clergyman of Scranton, Pa., to Miss Laura Arnold of McDonough, N.Y. [Chenango Co.]  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. R.W VanSchoick of Scranton, who framed the ritual in such a manner that both couples were joined in the bonds of holy matrimony in the same service.  H.A. Briggs a brother of the bridegrooms and about eighty invited guests were present, all seeming to vie with each other in showering upon the newly wedded couples their heartiest congratulations and blessings.

The dinner was tastefully spread and was indeed a most sumptuous repast reflecting great credit upon the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Hosley, who spared no pains to make the affair what it deserved to be, the event of the season.  It will not be deemed invidious for me to way that not in years has a marriage taken place in this community where the bride has been the recipient of such universal esteem and affection as Miss Hosley.  She enters her new relation in life carrying the best wishes and prayers of all our people.

The bridal party left on the 3 o'clock P.M. eastern bound train for a visit to New york, Scranton and Philadelphia.  Friendship N.Y. Register

DEFOY:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], Nov. 5th, Richard N. DeFoy, aged 11 years.

Between twelve and one o'clock on Tuesday last, Richard N. DeFoy, a bright lad aged eleven years, son of Alexander DeFoy, residing near the D.L.&W. freight depot, came to his death by the careless handling of a pistol.  He had just returned from school and was playing with a pistol which he pointed over his shoulder, playfully asking a girl present if he should shoot her.  In lowering the pistol, the hammer by some means caught in the collar of his coat, the weapon exploded, and the bullet entered the left side of his neck, cutting off a blood vessel.  With the exclamation, "I am shot," he fell into the arms of his sister, and almost immediately expired. Coroner Avery held an inquest on Tuesday afternoon and the jury returned a verdict of accidental shooting.  The father of the lad is absent in Colorado and his mother, who is at present in Canada, has been telegraphed to. This is but another of the almost daily warnings against allowing children to handle the deadly pistol.

Beecher in Uniform

The New York Sun thus notices Mr. Beecher's first appearance as chaplain of a Brooklyn militia regiment:

Capt. Henry Ward Beecher, in full uniform, dashed up to the armory entrance at 2:30 in the afternoon, riding a spirited roan horse.  He was accompanied by Staff Surgeon Watt and two others of the colonel's staff.  He handed his reins to his hostler and passed into the armory. As he appeared in sight of the soldiers, they hammered the floor with their guns and the band stuck up Aimee's favorite song, "Pretty as a Picture."  Mr. Beecher wore a cocked plush hat, over which danced a heavy black plume.  One side of the hat was fastened up with a rosette, the other with a beaded velvet cross. The crown was encircled with a silk cord with gold knobs for ends.  A high-breasted black coat to military cut, black pantaloons, corded with velvet and mouse-colored gloves completed the dress.  Mr. Beecher wore a Captain's epaulets and carried a showy sword at his side.  His iron-gray curling locks, which seemed to have been treated to pomade, hung over his coat collar.  Capt. Watson, of Company G, which is known at the Plymouth Chruch Company, took Mr. Beecher to see them in their fresh equipments.

After the inspection of the soldiers, Gen. Woodward commanded the staff and non-commissioned officers to form in line.  Capt. Beecher formed in line with the staff officers, submitted with satisfaction to the glance of Gen. Woodward over his uniform and when dismissed, like his brother officers, he saluted his military superior and frisked off to another part of the armory.  The muster showed 493 men in line, 90 absent, and a total roll of 583, which is a gain over 1877 of 161, and a gain over those present in 1877 of 107.

The regiment, after inspection, made a tour of the city.  The band was at its head.  Capt. Beecher rode with the staff officers behind the Colonel, his portly form seated queerly in his saddle.  New York Sun

CLOCK:  At her home near Ridgeville [Madison Co. NY], May 4, 1871, Mrs. Newton J. Clock, aged 31 years.

Mrs. Clock's amiable disposition and kind Christian character won her many friends in our community, and sadly indeed will she be missed in the circles where she so often met.  Her hand was ever ready to help the needy and her kind words of comfort were cheering to the afflicted.  Her disease was inflammatory rheumatism which lasted but a few weeks during which time she suffered extremely, but without a murmur, often saying to her friends, and especially to her husband:  "It is all right; I am willing to die."  At the same time expressing great anxiety for him and their little boy, who was so soon to be without a mother's care. She was characterized by all those womanly graces which so endear a companion and a mother, being affectionately devoted to her husband's interests and comfort, helping to bear the burdens, lessen the cares, and sharing with him the joys of life, making home the most pleasant and happy spot on earth.  Her funeral was attended by a large concourse of people and it was really an affecting scene to witness.  That vast assembly almost without an exception shed the sympathizing tear with the relatives whose hearts were wrung with anguish, sorrowing for one whose life was so full of promise. At the close of the services the following lines, written by a friend, were read by the officiating clergyman, Rev. D. Moose.

Gone from our embrace is our loved one, / Gone from our home and our love, / To rest in the arms of our Saviour / In the realms of glory above.

No more will her bright smile of gladness / Welcome the friends once so dear, / Today their hearts throb with sadness, / While weeping they bend o'er her bier.

Empty today is the casket, / No bright gem it contains, / While in Heaven it is shining in splendor, / Here nothing but ashes remains.

Yet sweet is the hope that we cherish / In this hour of sorrow and pain, / In a world where death enters never, / We shall meet dear Eliza again.
