In Smithville [Chenango Co. NY] July 26th, Mr. Robert Hetrick aged 67 years.

The citizens of Smithville Flats have just been saddened by the death from apoplexy, of Mr. Robert Hetrick, which took place on Saturday last, July 26th.  Mr. Hetrick had some premonitions of the attack from which he died in a similar attack, but of much less severity, several months since, and from which he appeared to have entirely recovered. The fatal stroke came upon him on Sabbath evening, July 20th, while engaged about his chores and at once rendered him nearly unconscious and incapable of speaking.  He never rallied to any great extent and finally on Saturday passed into the comatose state in which he shortly died.

The deceased was born in Ireland, of Scotch parentage, in the year 1812.  He was one of a family of four children of whom a brother and sister died in the old country, and another brother, who now resides in the town of German [Chenango Co. NY] together with himself came to this country.  He was about nineteen years of age when he arrived in New York, and soon after he took up his residence in Smithville on the place now occupied by his son James, where he continued to reside until he moved into the village.  In the year 1836, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Ramsey, whom he now leaves, together with a son and two daughters, to mourn his loss.

In his character Mr. Hetrick was a quiet, unobtrusive man, but yet a man of very decided character and strength of will.  He was universally recognized as a person of undoubted integrity, thoroughly upright in life, and entirely reliable in all his dealings with the world.  He also possessed deep moral convictions and was by no means destitute of religious principles and feeling.  Several years since he made an open profession of his faith in the religion of Christ, and though from his diffidence and self-constrained habits of thought and life, he did not say much upon religious subjects, there is every reason to believe that he never gave up his faith nor lost his hope of the better life.  He was a constant supporter and attendant upon the Presbyterian Church in Smithville, and his absence both there and in this community will be long felt and regretted.  His funeral was attended at the church on Monday afternoon, the 28th inst.

Tribute to the Late George H. Ketchum

We take the following beautiful tribute to the memory of the late George H. Ketchum from the Binghamton Democrat [Broome Co. NY] of last week:

One of the most pathetic funeral ceremonies ever witnessed in this locality occurred at the Baptist church in Greene [Chenango Co. NY], at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, the last sad rites over the remains of George H. Ketchum of that place.

About eighteen months since, deceased went West for the benefit of his health, was attacked by dumb ague, and his parents went and brought him back in January.  Since that time, he lingered with the pangs of consumption up to his death last Wednesday night.

Prior to his demise, George left written requests to be carried out at the funeral in a sealed envelope, not to be opened until after his death.  Accordingly, six young gentlemen, friends and schoolmates of the deceased, acted as pall bearers.  Six young ladies, also friends and schoolmates, dressed in white, trimmed with flowers, followed the remains. at the grave.  As a last token of remembrance and love, each of the young ladies deposited a bouquet upon all that remained of the dear friend so soon to be forever covered by the green turf.

The sealed requests also intimated the wish that a former friend and pastor of deceased should deliver the funeral sermon.  Accordingly, Rev. J.H. Sage, now of Gilbertsville, was sent for.  His sermon, though plain, was able, and contained many beautiful and valuable lessons on the subject of sorrow.  Although the church edifice was completely filled, during the latter part of the sermon scarcely a tearless eye was visible.

Deceased was a young man of remarkable character and virtue.  No blemish rests upon his fair name.  We cannot recall his participation in any serious or angry dispute.  He was without an enemy.  Pure, gentlemanly, honorable, faithful, refined, just, all were his friends.  During his lingering illness, consciousness of approaching death, strong religious faith, resignation and gentleness, the expression of tender, touching sentiments and failing strength caused him to appear rather like a creature of heaven than a creature of earth.  In his last visits with friends they were moved to tears.  Could all die as noble as he, death were a sweet, not a bitter thing. The hand of the fell destroyer has removed a character, perfect at least to mortal eye.  In the loss of one possessed of qualities of so great promise, the bereaved family have the deep sympathy of the entire community.

A very brilliant wedding at Gilbertsville [Otsego Co. NY] on Wednesday of last week, occurred at the Presbyterian Church, the contracting parties being Mr. Fitch Gilbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Y. Gilbert and Miss Caroline [Gilbert] daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Gilbert, both parties of that village.  In the evening a grand soiree dansante in honor of the happy couple took place at the Stag's Head Inn.  The occasion was also the opening of the newly completed hotel.  Japanese lanterns illuminated the balconies, and the gathering was the moist brilliant of the season.  Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert will stop for some weeks in Gilbertsville and then depart for their future home in Eau Claire, Wis.

The nuptials of J.B. McCall of Sayre, Pa. and Miss Nellie I. Morse of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] were celebrated at the residence of the bride's father, H.L. Morse, on Wednesday last, Rev. W.R. Stone, former pastor of the Free Baptist Church in that village officiating.

Death

WOODS:  In this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co. NY] of typhoid fever, the 4th inst., Adelbert Woods, aged 25 years.

MANNING:  Willie Manning aged four years, son of Isaac Manning, and grandson of Joel M. Jorden, of Dundee [Yates Co. NY], Thursday afternoon while in the field with his father, attempted to swallow a large pea.  It lodged in his windpipe in such a manner that it could not be removed and caused immediate death.

On Saturday evening last, Mr. James Cooper AEt. 41, merchant, of this city [NYC] of a lingering illness, which he bore with Christian resignation and fortitude.  He was much respected by all who knew him.  He has left a young family to whom his death will be a severe loss.  His friends and acquaintances are invited to attend his funeral this afternoon at 4 o'clock, from his house no. 91 Maidenlane.

To them the loss is irreparable, but experience only can properly sympathize with her bereaved consort.

Deaths

At Manheim, State of Pennsylvania, on the 24th ult. the Rev. John Frederick Ernst, the Lutheran Minister of that town and the adjoining congregation.  The deceased was an active industrious, friendly and pious character; a good husband, parent and neighbor.  His death will be greatly lamented by a bereaved widow, a number of promising children and a large circle of friends and acquaintance.

"Hark! my gay friend! that solemn toll, / Speak, the departure of a soul."

On Saturday, the 19th ult. after a short but painful illness, Mr. Loring Andrews late one of the proprietors and Editors of the Charleston Courier. An ardent affection for his family and home had for some time determined him to part with his interest in that paper.  He had nearly accomplished his purpose and even fixed upon a vessel and a day for his departure, when - fate, whose decrees we can as little foresee as result, cut him short in the prime of his life, and in the blossom of his hopes.

Mr. A. was born at Hingham in Massachusetts in which State his family have for many years lived in high consideration and respect.  He died in the 38th year of his age and was interred on Sunday morning at the Independent Church, Archdale Street, where a very impressive, appropriate and excellent exhortation was delivered on the occasion by the Rev. Mr. Keith,  Charleston Courier.

Ran away on Sunday the 17th inst, John Swain an indented apprentice to the Taylor and Barber's business, 18 years old.  He wore a white napt hat, fine blue cloth coat, corded woolen vest, do. Russel Boyce who died at Ninevah [Broome Co. NY] on the 19th inst. whither he had gone on a pedestrian trip to visit his sons, was an octogenarian of this village [Mt. Upton, Chenango Co. NY], where he has resided many years.  He had been a member of the Methodist church for more than half a century, had been a devoted class leader and so earnest and consistent was his Christian life that he maintained to the last the respect of the entire community.  Verily he rests from his labors, and his works do follow him."

His many friends throughout the county will sympathize with John Banks, Esq. of Bainbridge and his afflicted family, in the loss of his eldest son, Willie S., who died on Wednesday of last week, of heart disease, after a long illness.  A correspondent of the Binghamton Republican, writing from Bainbridge makes the following mention of a generous act on the part of Mr. Banks' neighbors, which one reads with a feeling of real pleasure. "It is a pleasure to record an act like that performed by about twenty of our citizens, who, knowing that Mr. Banks had been confined to the bedside of his sick son, to the neglect of his farm duties, repaired to his farm, Thursday afternoon, raked and set up about five acres of wheat, which was in danger of spoiling, got in a lot of hay and made themselves useful generally.  It is sympathy of this kind that is worth something."

HUFCUTT:  In Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] July 16th, a son of John H. Hufcutt.

LORD:  At Vallonia Springs, Broome co. [NY] July 15th, Mr. James Lord aged 30 years.

HILL:  In DeRuyter [Madison Co. NY] July 21st, Gertrude E. [Hill] wife of Julius  Hill, aged 52 years.

HAMILTON:  In DeRuyter [Madison Co. NY] July 23d, Mr. Marvin M. Hamilton aged 79 years.

Marvin M. Hamilton of DeRuyter, who had been complaining for some time, died suddenly on the morning of the 23d inst.  He was walking around the room, when he was taken with a fit of coughing, dropped to the floor and expired.

LETTINGTON:  In Rochester [Monroe Co. NY] July 13th Cornelia E. [Lettington] daughter of Horace and Hannah B. Lettington, formerly of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY].

FISK: In New Haven, Conn., July 16th, Mr. Horace D. Fisk aged 57 years, formerly of Oxford [Chenango Co. NY].

BOYLAN:  The remains of Mrs. Mary Boylan were brought from Corning [Steuben Co. NY] on Tuesday evening, last and interred in the Catholic cemetery in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY].  The lady was formerly a resident of Smithville [Chenango Co. NY] being one of the early settlers at the Flats, Her age was 95 years.

BOYCE:  Mr. Russel Boyce an aged citizen of Mt. Upton [Chenango Co. NY] died suddenly of apoplexy at Ninevah [Broome Co. NY] at the residence of his son, where he had gone on a visit.  Mr. Boyce, although an octogenarian, was very active and preferred walking to riding, either upon the cars or in a carriage.  He had just completed his last journey when the messenger Death called him.  He was a worthy man, a lifelong Christian and possessed the respect of all who knew him.

MASON:  Isaac Mason aged 97, died the 13th.  He was one of the oldest residents of the town of Eaton [Madison Co. NY]

SHORER:  Mrs. James Shorer of Hamilton [Madison Co. NY] dropped dead July 19th while performing her usual household duties.  She was an apparently healthy person, but the day previous was chased and badly scarred by an unruly bull.

MALMBERG:  John Malmberg a respected president of Cortland [Cortland Co. NY] for twenty years past, died at his residence in that village on the 23d inst.  He was a native of Sweden and his age was seventy-seven.

Civil War Letter - Alexander Brewer, June 1861

We are permitted to make the following extract from a letter written by Alexander Brewer of this village [Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY], who is a private in Col. Townsends' Albany Regiment. Said regiment was engaged in the Battle of Great Bethel.  [fought June 10, 1861, one of first land battles of the war,  Confederate victory]

Camp Alexander, June 11th, 1861:  "I am on guard and am writing on my knapsack in front of the camp.   Made a forced march last night, twenty miles; had a battle; was fired into by one of our regiments, and we fought about an hour before we found out who were firing into us, and this we found out when we charged bayonets and got within three feet of them.  The balls flew like hail stones.  Our Regiment had ten men wounded. We made an attack upon the rebels and found they had a masked battery of twenty guns and we had but three. We could have taken it, but it was thought by our officers that it would cost too many lives, so we retreated, but expect to take it tomorrow when we shall have more guns. We had twenty men killed.  If we could have got them out from behind their breast work, we could soon have "cleaned them out."  After we had retreated, we sent a white flag in order that we might get our killed and wounded. The rebels run up a black flag.  Townsen's regiment swear they will take no more prisoners, but they will kill every Rebel they can find, because they fired on our sick and wounded. Charles Holliday and his wife have agreed to separate.  He pays her two dollars per week, quarterly in advance, towards her support.  It is to be regretted that it has become necessary for Charles and his wife thus to separate. We  have always considered Mr. Holiday a n honest man, and that he was respected by his fellow townsmen.

Deaths

A little child aged about three years, fell into a keeler partly filled with hot water last Saturday and was so badly scaled that it died on Sunday, next day.  The child with its mother, as we learn, were visiting at E. Breffles' near Lull's Woolen Mill, in this town [Morris, Otsego Co. NY] where the accident occurred.

J.C. Mull a young man aged 25 years and formerly conductor on the Albany and Susquehanna R.R. whose father resides in Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY], was killed by a railroad accident near Atchinson, Kansas, Saturday, Oct. 25th.  He was a brakeman but riding on the engine at the time of the accident. The engine jumped the track and turned over down an embankment.  Mr. Mull was dreadfully scalded.  His body reached Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] last Thursday and was buried in Schenevus [Otsego Co. NY] on Friday.

Among the patriotic young men of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] ways the Freeman's Journal, who entered the service of their country in the war of the rebellion, was Robert C.[Wood] oldest son of Jerome B. Wood, Esq.  He was soon stricken down with fever and died in camp at Washington [DC] on the 1st of January 1863, aged 18 years.  His father went to his bedside, brought his remains home for interment, took the same fever and died on the 13th day of the same month.  Both were victims to the war.  Application for a pension in favor of the mother was made, and Mrs. Wood receives pension arrears amounting to $1,600 and $96 a year during her life.

The sudden and unlooked for death of our common friend forbids eulogy or elaborate comment.  We can but grieve and be silent; follow after him and be hopeful; remember and be mournful.  Aad placing our confidence where he did, try to imitate a worthy example.  Our dear friend was a man eminently pure of heart, generous, kind and affectionate.  Doing no harm and saying harm of none; and yet he was a man of firm convictions and energetic action.  He leaves a character worthy of emulation.  His constant endeavor was to do right.  We can add no honor to his memory, for his deeds of a lifetime have honored him beyond our power to effect.  David Wakelee was born in the city of Poughkeepsie, [Dutchess Co.] State of New York, on the 19th day of November 1820.  He died in the city of Galveston, state of Texas on the 9th day of October 1879.  During forty-four years of his serviceable life, he was a resident of Galveston city, engaged in all its activities.  He held many positions of honor and trust and was ever prominent and zealous in deeds of benevolence and mercy.  He was a consistent member and communicant of Trinity church and one of its vestrymen from 1853 to 1879 and filled the office of secretary during 21 years. And was a "Christian gentleman," a devoted husband, and loving parent.  and in the highest sense a man of honor and rectitude.  One for who the closing of our own beautiful burial service finds a peculiar fitness: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord!  N.B. Mrs. Nancy Grace of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] grandmother of Richard Cooley of Morris [Otsego Co. NY] celebrated her 93d birthday Oct. 28th.  She is quite smart and most of her faculties are well preserved.

Deaths

April 25th, 1891, Mrs. Ann Bartholomew aged 91 years.  the funeral was held from the residence of Edward Bartholomew, Wednesday at 2 p.m., Rev. B.P. Ripley officiating. Remains were interred in Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

The funeral of Mr. John VanCott was held from his late residence last Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and at 11:00 from the Presbyterian Church, Rev. J.L. Jones, of Guilford, officiating. The services were attended by a large circle of relatives and friends who gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory.  His remains were interred in Evergreen Hill cemetery.  

Mr. Abner Rockwell an old resident and respected citizen of Garratsville [Otsego Co. NY] died suddenly at that place last Saturday.  He was engaged in carrying wood into the house and as he turned to close the door he dropped to the floor dead.  His age was about 78 years and six months.  A wife and four sons survive to mourn his loss.

Funeral of Rev. T.P. Halstead

Friday afternoon the funeral services of Rev. T.P. Halstead were held at Afton [Chenango Co. NY] and were in charge of Rev. O.H. McAnulty.  At the home of his daughter, where he died, a short service composed of scripture reading and prayer was held.  Mrs.  Halstead, the wife of the deceased and her father were unable to attend the services at the church and it was a sad sight indeed to see his body taken away from them.

The services at the church, which was filled to overflowing, were commenced by an anthem with tenor solo "Lead me Gently Home."  Rev. O.H. McAnulty announced the 960th hymn, "How Vain Are All Things Below the Skies."  The prayer - a comforting one - was offered by Rev. M.S. Hard, D.D. of Wyoming district. Rev. L.L. Sprague of Wyoming seminary read the 38th Psalm, and Rev. H.C. McDermott the 90th Psalm. Rev. A.F. Chaffee followed with a selection of passages. The 980th hymn was then sung, "How Blest the Righteous When He Dies."  Beautiful tributes to the memory of the departed were made by Rev. W. L. Thrope of Waverly, J.W. Movis, of Milford, J.B. Sumner of Owego district and Thomas Harroun of Binghamton district.  Their remarks were filled with commendations of the strong merits of Rev. Mr. Halstead's character and words of counsel to the living.  Rev. McAnulty also made a few remarks.  He thought the deceased a most unselfish man.  Mr. Halstead was a devout and earnest minister.  Mr. Halstead's face looked perfectly natural but showed the effects of disease. The body was interred at the cemetery at Afton. The following, who are among the youngest clergymen of the district, acted as bearers:  Revs. R.P. Ripley, E. Kilpatrick, W.T. Blair, C.H. Hayes, C.E. Personnus and W.H. Alger.

There were about twenty of the pastors of this district present and the following from other districts:  Revs. L.S. Hard, J.B. Sumner, Thomas Harroun, George M. Colvill, A.M. Crydenwise, A.J. Van Cleft, E.D. Olmstead, J.G. Holman and H.C. McDermitt.

Among those in attendance, the following from Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] were noticed: George T. Wilber, George Reynolds, J.O. Rowe, Thomas Willshau, HJ. Greely Spencer and Nelson Donley. Oneonta Star

HOOPER:  In Oneida [Madison Co. NY] March 29 of softening of the brain, J.B. Hooper aged 45 years.  Mr. Hooper served as a soldier in the late rebellion in the union army and his disease is the result of a wound received while in the service of his country.

FOLAND:  In Durhamville, March 31, after a short illness, Mrs. Elizabeth Foland wife of Jonas Foland, aged 64 years and 6 months.  Deceased was one of the most affectionate of wives and as a kind mother there were few her equal and none surpassed her.  As a neighbor, in sickness and sorrow we have lost one of the kindest of friends. She will be missed by the sick and dying; missed - her advice, her councils, and her sympathy.  we deeply sympathize with the bereaved family and mourn with them, for their loss is our loss also; though we hope our loss is her gain.

REED:  Erieville, Madison Co. NY:  A fair boy, the son of Benjamin Reed died of brain disease in this place on Tuesday night, March 25, aged about twenty months.  We all wish he could have remained with us for he was beautiful even in death.

NICHOLS:  Perry Nichols of Georgetown [Madison Co. NY] was buried in this place [Erieville, Madison Co. NY] on Thursday of last week.  He had suffered long and severely from a disease called dropsy that was brought on him by an enlarged liver.  So said his doctors and so say I.

SCHAFFER: Died at Middle settlement March 29th, Mrs. Caroline Schaffer of this village [Oneida, Madison Co. NY].  Only six short weeks ago she was a happy bride.  Now, the heart that then beat with love's affections has ceased its throbbing forever.  Life is like unto the season of buds and flowers. They are with us today, tomorrow they are faded, withered and gone - if these broken links were never to be gathered up and reunited.  If beyond death's swelling flood there was no eternal shore, then, indeed, our pathway to the grave would be shrouded in darkness.

BERRY:  North Brookfield, Madison Co. NY:  The sudden and unexpected death of Alphonso E. Berry of Stockwell Settlement [Oneida Co. NY] was a sad blow to this community, as he was well known and highly esteemed where he had always lived.  He leaves an aged father and mother, a wife, one son and one daughter to mourn his loss.

CARR- MARLETTE:  Mount Vision [Otsego Co. NY], On the 1st inst. Stephen Carr of Lansing Mich. and Mary M. Marlette were married at Ezra Marlette's by Rev. S.M. Cook.  There were about fifty relatives and friends resent to witness the ceremony.  The wedding presents amounted to about seven hundred dollars.  After spending a few weeks visiting friends, they leave for Lansing to make their future home there.

COOK:  In Garrattsville [Otsego Co. NY] Oct. 9th, of enlargement of the heart, Florinda [Cook]a wife of John Cook aged about 73 years.

NEARING:  In Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY] Oct. 17th, Mrs. Henrietta Nearing wife of Sylvester Nearing in the 75th year of her age.

We learn with regret of the death of ex-Sheriff A.N. Benedict which occurred at his residence about two miles below the village of Unadilla [Otsego Co. NY] on the 9th inst.  Mr. Benedict was formerly from Dutchess County [NY] but had lived in Unadilla for the past twenty-five years.  He was elected Sheriff of this county in 1872, returning to his farm in the town of Unadilla at the expiration of his term.  An exchange says: "The funeral was very largely attended, the carriages following the remains to the cemetery forming a procession upwards of one mile in length."

Over forty of the friends and neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. James Southern met at their residence in this town [Morris, Otsego Co. NY] on the 22d to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their marriage.  It was a social and pleasant gathering of many familiar faces. The table was bountifully spread with the substantial good things for inner man.  The presents were nice, useful and thankfully received. the company lingered until quite late in the evening, when they separated for their homes with thoughts of this pleasant visit that will not vanish in a long time.

Mr. John Vanderwerker died on Tuesday at the advanced age of 104 years.  Mr. Vanderwerker was a soldier in the war of 1812 and has for many years resided near Bennettsville in this town.  He was no doubt the oldest inhabitant in this section of the State.

As will be noticed by reference to the proper column, James Baker formerly of this town [Oneida, Madison Co. NY] died recently in Wisconsin. [Died in Wisconsin, Nov. 10, of inflammation of the bowels, Mr. James Baker, formerly of Oneida, aged 37 years.] In 1863, during those dark and gloomy days of the Republic, Mr. Baker enlisted in the Eighth Heavy Artillery of this state [NY].  In August 1864, he was taken prisoner and remained the victim of Southern barbarity till the last of February following.  Doubtless while in the rebel prison pens his constitution received a shock which led to his early death.  The story of the sufferings of the "noble boys in blue," while captives on the sun-blistered rather than sacred soil of the vaunted chivalry will ever retain a deep interest.  We give below some extracts from a journal kept by Mr. Baker during his imprisonment:

We were then sent to Richmond on the cars, where we stayed three days and were examined again.  Many of the boys gave up their money, with the promise that they should have it again when they were exchanged and others hid it in their clothes and if it was found it was confiscated to the Rebel Government.  I hid all I had ($14.50) between the lining and outer leather of my old boot.  Tuesday the 30th we were sent to Belle Isle, where we drew one-fourth of a loaf of corn bread twice a day and a small piece of bacon.  Some of it was very good, and some had maggots in nearly an inch long.  Here we stayed about three weeks, without any kind of shelter from the scorching rays of a Southern sun and chilly nights and storms that would drench us to the skin. We were in sight of the capital of the bogus Confederacy and old Jeff's palace, where we could hear a brass band play every morning.

October 5th, five hundred of us were put on a train of box cars, like hogs, eighty in a car and sent to Salisbury, N.C.  We had one loaf of corn bread and a small piece of meat each.  Major John H. Gee was then in command of this camp.  About seven thousand came here in a very few days.  For many weeks we had a kind of shelter.  Mess-mate and I had a small blanket we got on the Lale.  The ground was our bed, a brick our pillow and the canopy of heaven our shelter.  Often have I looked up at the moon and stars at dead of night and thought of loved ones at home, and asked myself, "Are these the same that shine on my little home in York State?"  

About the first of November there was furnished two tents to every squad of one hundred men.  With the closest crowding these sheltered about half; the rest had to dig holes in the ground.  Many froze their feet. About the middle of December, I was detailed to go two miles to load brick, which were brought to camp for the purpose of building fireplaces for hospitals.  The first day, I sold a gold pen which I found in Petersburg for $10.  With this money I bought salt, pies and tobacco, carried them into camp and sold them or traded for brass buttons.  These I sold to the guard.  In this way I made about $100 in Confederate scrip, with which I bought something to eat.  About this time, I bought a hole in the ground of one of the boys for $8 and mess-mate and I moved into it.  It was large enough to sleep in, and we could sit up in it.  There was a hole dug in one side for a fireplace, mud bricks sundried for a chimney.  Our furniture consisted of two bricks what served the double purpose of chairs and pillows; one quart cup, which we used for water pail, coffee pot (crust coffee) soup dish, and wash bowl; one pint cup for drinking and sorghum; one case knife - with this we had to cut our wood as well as our bread. One day I asked Major Gee to let me step into the ditch, which was dry and gather an armful of leaves for a bed, but was denied.  Our rations during the winter were very scant.  Often were we cut down to one-fourth loaf per day, and some days without any.  I was forty-eight hours without any at one time. We got meat once in about ten days - beef heads, with eyes in and the lights were given us to eat.  Sometimes the tripe without cleaning, gullets and beef noses were given us for extras.  

Over five thousand died during my stay there.  Oh, it was heart rending to go into the dead house and see the bodies lay there, some mere skeletons!  One day there were sixty-four.  To look upon one's friends and think maybe his turn next to go in the same way - pen cannot describe it.  Seventeen of my own company died in this miserable place.  When we first went there, they had these coffins they carried the dead out in, emptied them and came back for more, but this soon played out. They then had a four-mule team, big lumber wagon and negro driver. They would pile them in like hogs, dump them in holes or trenches, stripped of all their clothing that was of any value.

About the 8th of January, the rain pouring down in torrents caused our mud house to cave in, nearly burying us alive.  With great difficulty we got out. After losing my house, I went under one of the hospitals and stayed until the 14th, when my partner left me and went out into the rebel army, hoping in that way to escape and get into our lines.  But I never heard from him, poor boy.  I think he is dead.  I then went into a tent with my company, but in a few days a severe storm of rain and sleet flooded our tent.  It became one complete mud hole.  I took a severe cold and was very sick for a number of days. The boys thought I could not live.  I got them to go and get me medicine and kept up good courage and would not go to the hospital.  Had I done so, I think I should not be alive now.  After I got better, my feet began to swell, and some of my toes turned black and were very painful.  I also had the break-bone fever.  My Knees would begin to ache about three o'clock in the afternoon, and the pain would streak up and down my limbs.  It was such excruciating pain that I could not sleep but had to lay and groan.  It would last until three in the morning.  I suffer from the effects of it until this day. 

Various were the rumors in camp about exchange.  The guard would tell us we were going away, and that the cars were at the depot waiting for us; but these were all lies, got up to torment us. But on Tuesday, the 21st of February, in the evening, we were called out to get rations for a march.  Two loaves corn and wheat bread and about a half pound of bacon was given to each man. the next day (22d) each division formed in line, a parole of honor read to us, and about noon we left the stockade and arrived at Goldsboro, where we signed a parole and drew one day's rations of raw beef, corn meal and cow peas.  We started at midnight for Wilmington on platform cars, reached our lines at ten o'clock, A.M., Tuesday the 28th day of February 1865, hungry, dirty, ragged and lousy.

Warren White aged eighteen years of Quaker Street was killed last Wednesday night by jumping from the cars at Knowersville [Albany Co. NY].  He intended to go on the railroad excursion which went to Barren Island yesterday morning and wishing to accompany a young lady friend from Knowersville, he left Quaker Street on an express train Wednesday evening.  Finding the train did not stop, he jumped off a short distance east of the village, when the cars were in motion at the rate of forty miles an hour.  He was not missed till the train reached this city, when a telegram was at once sent back and a search made for him.  He was found with the right leg cut off, hip broken and drove into his body and a bad cut on the head, which alone was probably enough to cause death, Argus [Albany NY]

The young man saved one-half hours' time and thirty cents in money by jumping from the train, instead of going to the next station and returning on the sleeper.  On Saturday last a boy was smashed nearly to death in Albany by attempting to jump upon a moving A.&S. train.

Wright) died at the same place in May 1843, the couple having lived together as husband and wife, 61 years.

At Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] on Sunday morning last, Virginia Eliza [Murray] wife of Mr. Henry K. Murray and daughter of the Hon D.S. Dickinson, aged 20 years.

Scarcely three months have elapsed since Mrs. Murray gave her hand to the worthy gentleman who had won her affections and left this village and her father's house, a lovely, beloved and rejoicing bride.  The blessings of our people went with her, for among all our maidens, no one was more highly esteemed than Virginia E. Dickinson.  But the affection of her friends could not save her from the shaft of Death. Disease prostrated her and after long weeks of most painful suffering, she departed for a brighter realm.  But she went like the bird from the desert in search of its garden bowers, resigned, happy, joyous, trusting in her God and the Savior, who had redeemed her.  Then why should we mourn for her?  The living, the stricken husband and parents and brother and sisters call rather for our condolence and sympathy and these they have, spontaneously offered by this entire community.

The remains of the deceased were brought to this place [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] on Monday evening, where they await the expected arrival of Senator Dickinson from Washington to witness their interment.

In this village [Binghamton, Broome Co., NY] on Tuesday morning, Jan. 19th, after a short but severe illness, Mrs. Harriet Abbott, wife of Col. Joseph B. Abbott, aged 46 years.  In the sudden and unexpected death of this estimable Lady, society has been bereft of one of its most useful and exemplary members, and her bereaved husband and family mourn the loss of one who was truly a companion and mother in every sense of the word.  Though unassuming and retiring in her manners many have had the opportunity to feel and appreciate her kindness, benevolence and true worth.  To the writer, she has been a mother, sister and friend, from whom in the hour of sorrow and affliction, he has received the kindest attention and most consoling sympathy, and whose memory will ever be treasured in the most sacred recesses of his heart.  A severer affliction to her family cannot be imagined nor one more calculated to call for Christian sympathy in behalf of those who are most nearly and deeply affected by their sudden bereavement.
