Bainbridge Academy Graduation
Bainbridge Republican, July 3, 1879
The commencement exercises of Bainbridge Academy [Chenango Co., NY] took place in Academy Hall on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings of last week, and the efforts of the scholars and teachers were rewarded by the attendance of a large and appreciative audience. On Wednesday evening the Primary and Intermediate departments were represented, and many of the scholars displayed an ability that was creditable, not only to themselves but their able teachers. Thursday evening the first division of the Academy Department rendered their part of the programme in the commendable manner The drama, "The Courtship of Miles Standish," (dramatized by the graduates) was of superior merit, and reflected credit to our school in the manner in which it was rendered. The graduating class consisted of only two members, Miss Mary L. Akerley of Bainbridge, and Mr. John H. Grant of Nineveh, and on Friday evening they acquitted themselves in a very becoming manner. The salutatory, "Mens Agitat Molem," was rendered by Miss Akerley and it was of such high order that an abler pen than ours is called for to comment. The valedictory by Mr. Grant was also of much merit. Diplomas were then presented the class by Prof. Kilmer, after which Rev. D.N. Grummon addressed them with words well chosen, happy and practical, Mr. Edward Danforth of Elmira also made a few brief remarks to the class which were timely and well expressed.
