Dr. G.J. Westcott, M.D. an eminent dental surgeon of this city, died in Port Gibson [Mississippi] on Tuesday, the 22d inst., from hemorrhage of the lungs. The Doctor attended church on the Sabbath previous and communed in the celebration of the Lord's supper. On Tuesday, immediately after extracting a tooth for a lady, he was seized with a profuse hemorrhage and expired in a quarter of an hour. The deceased was an amiable and pious man; kind, unobtrusive and benevolent; and of great eminence and usefulness in his profession. Though he died from home, and far away from his wife, who is on a visit to her relations in New York, yet he died in the midst of a large circle of friends endeared to him by many ties and who paid every attention and respect to his remains that the solemn occasion demanded. Mississippi Southern
Dr. Westcott, whose sudden death is announced in the paragraph above was a son of Dr. Gardiner Westcott of Springfield, Otsego Co. [NY] and a son-in-law of Dr. Colby Knapp of Guilford [Chenango Co. NY]. the deceased was well known in this place, where several of his wife's relatives reside, and was universally beloved and esteemed as a most excellent and worthy man. The grief of his estimable wife at her sudden bereavement, the intelligence of which reached her at Springfield as she was about to start south to join her husband may, perhaps, be partially conceived by those who have drunk deep themselves of the sorrows of life. May the Lord sustain and comfort her.
____________
It is our painful duty to record the sudden death of Dr. Westcott of Jackson, Mi., he died in this place [Port Gibson] on the 23d ult. of hemorrhage of the lungs, in about fifteen minutes after the bleeding began. On the next day his corpse was carried into the Presbyterian church, followed by many of our citizens, where a funeral sermon was preached, the funeral procession hen moved to the grave, when the impressive funeral service of the Episcopal church was performed by the Rev. Mr. Merrill. [Port Gibson Herald, Oct. 2, 1846]
