Soldier's Letter, Civil War, May 1864

 Oxford Times, June 1, 1864

In the field near Harrison's Landing, Va., May 15, 1864

I have a little leisure, and will improve it by writing you a few lines, to let you know the part I have acted in this great drama.  I think I wrote you in my last that the army was, every moment, expected orders to move.  The suspense was not of long duration.  At 11 o'clock on the night of the 3d, we were ordered to march in unison with the whole army.  The army never moved with a better and firmer purpose.  Everyone was sanguine of success.  At 3 o'clock on the morning of the 4th we reached Germania Ford.  Our Regiment was selected to charge across the river and rout enemies' pickets, which we did in good style, without the loss of a man.  The enemy fled, leaving one of their number on the field. We continued the march via Chancellorsville to the vicinity of Mine Run on the Orange C.H. road, without interruption.  On the 5th we fought the enemy's Cavalry at Donaldsville.  Our time was employed in skirmishing, scouting and picketing until the 9th, when the whole Corps started on a raid in the enemy's rear. The first day we marched to Beaver-dam Station, where we destroyed the R.R., two trains of cars, two locomotives and Quartermaster and Commissary stores, valued at 3,00,000 of dollars. We also recaptured 39 officers and 300 enlisted men who were on their way to Richmond under a cavalry guard. They were, foot sore, hungry and tired, and the sight of their deliverers was most cheering to them. The cowardly guard discharged their pieces in their faces and then fled, fortunately they hurt no one.  It was another specimen of Southern chivalry. The enemy made an attack upon our flank several times, but then. Sheridan hardly gave it a passing notice. Each Brigade would send out two or three squadrons to skirmish with the enemy while the column was passing, thus the march was continued without being retarded in the least.

On the morning of the 10th, while eating our breakfast, the enemy tossed in a few shells for dessert which we did not relish very much, and to tell the truth about it rather destroyed our appetite for what we had.  We sent a few messengers to inform them that we did not appreciate such hospitality and they soon retired.  We marched to the South Anna River and bivouacked on the right bank. We resumed the march on the 11th.  But Stuart was hanging around us with his whole force and was destined to be rather troublesome.  He attacked us in rear in the morning and was handled rather rough.  About noon, we cut the railroad again at Ashland, and destoryed it for miles.  Stuart had taken a shorter rout and came in our front.  We had a sharp fight for about 3 hours. We completely routed the enemy capturing 2 pieces of artillery and 60 prisoners. We remained here until about midnight, when we resumed the march.  At 2 A.M. on the 12th we were within two miles of the Rebel Capital.  As we were moving along a torpedo exploded in the road which gave the enemy warning of our approach. We entered the enemy's outer fortifications and he opened on us before day. We fought till about 3 P.M. when we crossed Meadow Bridge.  About 8 A.M. the enemy had us surrounded, but everyone had learned to put entire confidence in our commander and there was no confusion, but everyone stood at his post.  After desperate fighting we drove back this enemy in our rear and towards the city and completely routed him at the Bridge and the whole company crossed the Chickahominy without further molestation. We captured two guns and some prisoners, but not without loss on our side. The 8th lost 1 killed, 6 wounded and 3 missing.  Adelbert Lamphere of my Co. had one leg shot off and the other badly shattered.  The shell which wounded him passed thro' a brick building and took off one leg for a man in the 1st Vermont at the same time, and rushed on in its hellish fury and exploded in our rear. We marched to Gains Mills and encamped for the night. We arrived here yesterday without anything more of note occurring. We passed over many of the fields of Gen. McClellan's military achievements. The buildings, trees and fences still retain the mark of the deadly missiles which were hurled by the two powerful armies. We are all fatigued and sleepy, and I trust you will pardon my disconnected style as I can hardly collect my thoughts.  How long we shall remain here I cannot say. We have not yet heard the result of the great battle yet but feel confident that it cannot be otherwise than cheering. Richmond papers claim a victory but says that their army has fallen back, which we can easily interpret.

I remain as ever your Friend   C.

Sad News

The Telegraph of last week publishes a letter to Mrs. Frederick N. Holmes, of this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], giving the sad intelligence of the probable death of her son Albert.  The letter is dated at Fort Selden, New Mexico, March 18th, from which we extract the following:

"A party of young men, myself and Albert included, were out hunting in the Sierra Seladed mountains, about twenty miles from this place, and were surprised by a band of Apache savages, and being greatly overpowered by superior numbers, we were, after a brief resistance, forced to retreat for our lives.  Albert was struck with an arrow and the next instant was in the hands of the Indians.  We made a charge and endeavored to rescue him, but a fresh party of savages arriving we were again compelled to retreat and forced to leave Albert and one other of our party to their fate.  I am not positive as to whether his wound was serious, as I could not get close enough to see where he was struck.  He has undoubtedly long ere this gone to a better world."

The young man referred to left Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], where he had always lived, in November last, for Chicago, and there enlisted in Co. B, 15th Regiment U.S. infantry, and was sent west.  His father is Mr. Frederick N. Holmes, formerly of Sherburne but now residing near the gate house south of this village,  His son Albert was 18 years of age and the oldest of his living sons.

Henry Berry was found dead in his bed, on Thursday morning last, at the residence of Charles B. Brooks, in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], in whose employ he was.  He was assisted to his bed on the evening previous, very much under the influence of fusil oil, to the use of which he was addicted.  As late as one o'clock he was heard to snore heavily, as he was accustomed to do.  Coroner Avery held an inquest and the verdict of the jury was "death from apoplexy, from congestion of the brain, caused by over stimulation by liquor."

Last Friday two gentlemen of Milford [Otsego Co., NY] went on a fishing excursion by the Cherry Valley Creek, above Westville [Franklin Co., NY].  Their names were Mr. Saxton, son-in-law of J.V. Hawver, of this village [Morris, Otsego Co., NY] and Dr. -?-, a Dentist of Milford.  They drove a very vicious horse who had on several occasion run away.  After they had fished to their satisfaction, they started for home, and when near the four corners at Westville the horse became frightened, behaved very badly, when Mr. Saxton was thrown from the wagon striking his head against a sign post, which stands near the road, crushing the top of his head.  He was taken up and conveyed to his father's residence which was fortunately but a few rods off. The accident happened about 8 o'clock in the evening and he died, about 11 o'clock soon after his wife had arrived, having been sent for to Milford.  After Mr. Saxton was thrown from the wagon, the horse ran a few rods, when the Doctor was thrown out, breaking both of his legs and crushing one of them very badly.  Mr. Saxton was about 33 years of age, and leaves a wife and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death.  Morris Chronicle.

Wholesale Poisoning

The village of Ithaca [Tompkins Co., NY], has for a few weeks past been much excited from the fact that four persons in the family of John Lang, of that place, have been poisoned, three of whom have died.  It appears that Mrs. Skinner, sister of Mrs. Lang (widow of S.B. Skinner, years ago a resident of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], in the employ of Prof. Marquis, as a daguerrean artist, who died in January last) with her little daughter Kittie, aged 9 years, made it their home with Mrs. L. as did also Miss Olive Porter, a young lady 29 years of age, niece of the two women.  Mrs. Lang had two children: Bell, aged 6, and Katy, aged 4 years.  Bell Lang died on the 12th of March, Miss [Olive] Porter on the 22d, and Kittie Skinner on the 24th.  Katy Lang, the remaining one of the four, although very sick, it is thought will recover.

There is no doubt in the minds of the physicians, that the deaths resulted from poison, and various rumors and surmises are afloat.  There has been strong suspicion that Miss Porter herself administered the poison, but this she denied before her death.  Portions of the stomachs and intestines of the victims, together with some molasses and pickles, which are supposed to contain poison, have been forwarded to Prof. Hadley, of Buffalo, for analyzation, but at the last accounts he had failed to detect poison.

Suspicion that Skinner too, had died from poison, induced the Coroner to disinter the body, which was done on the 26th; but after a careful examination by the physicians, it was decided that there were no traces of poison, and that he died of inflammation of the lungs.  So the matter rests at present.

Death of a Venerable Lady

The Morrisville Observer announces the death of a former resident of this County [Chenango Co., NY] as follows:  The venerable Mrs. Bethiah Hatch, widow of the late Daniel Hatch, who died last Saturday at her residence near Eaton village [Madison Co., NY], was one of the ancient landmarks in the population of our town.  She was born in Hillsdale, Columbia Co. [NY], and during her girlhood removed to Oxford, Chenango Co. [NY], where she married her husband.  In the year 1797 she accompanied him to the farm on which she afterwards spent her life and where she died, near the old Pettis factory, between Eaton and Hamilton villages [Madison Co., NY]. At that time this whole region was almost an unbroken wilderness and Mr. and Mrs. Hatch reached their destination, where she resided for seventy-three years, by the aid of marked trees.  Mrs. H. survived her husband nearly thirty years, and during her active life was well known for the prominent part she took in the various social and religious affairs of the day.

Deaths

In New York City, on the 10th inst., Jennie C. [Squires], eldest child of the late Selah Squires, Esq., of this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], aged 17 years.  This sore and sudden bereavement has fallen with crushing weight on the household of which she was a member, and on the circle of associates and friends by whom she was cherished and beloved. Visiting in this city of New York and expecting soon to return home, she was borne hither in the sleep of death.  Kind, gentle, affectionate, dutiful, she has been hastily summoned from the pleasant associations where these qualities were developed, with but a slight consciousness that her departure was near.  In the beauty and bloom of seeming health, she has faded as a vision from our sight.  Yet carefully and religiously reared we can believe that she was ready for the hasty call from her Lord.  May the young hear the warning, "be ye also ready."  And may the members of the household to whom this severe trial has come be sustained in their sorrow by that blessed One who has a heart of infinite sympathy for His bruised and stricken ones.

In this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 14th inst., Mr. Andrew Wagner, aged 76 years.  The deceased was an old inhabitant of this town, generally known and respected as an upright man, and a consistent Christian.  About six weeks ago he met with a severe loss in the death of his companion.  The loss he felt most keenly and yet his trust in God was unshaken.  Little did sympathizing friends think they would so soon mourn his loss.  But he is gone.  He sleeps that blessed sleep of the righteous from which none ever wake to weep.  The family of which he was the head, feels an irreparable loss.  The church of which he was a consistent and faithful member feels his loss.  All who knew him will feel the loss, but our loss is his eternal gain.

Found Dead:  Mr. Gabriel Kleinmyer, a resident of Syracuse [Onondaga Co. NY], was found dead in a field, near Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], in this county, on Tuesday of last week.  The deceased was a vender of spectacles, and on a tour through that section.  The supposition is that he died very suddenly, as he had evidently sat down and expired without a struggle.  His goods, money and watch were all found with him.  He had been dead about eleven days.  There was a rumor here that the person spoken of above was a Mr. Lowenthall, a well-known jewelry peddler, who travels through this section which turns out, to be untrue, much to the satisfaction of his friends.

Golden WeddingMr. and Mrs. G.D. Phillips of Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage on the 2d inst.  All their children and grandchildren were present, and nearly a hundred friends and invited guests joined in the happy reunion.  It was a golden wedding, indeed.  The trees golden with the first touch of autumn, stood in the mellow light of October, and external nature, serene and mature was in pleasing harmony with the day, which gathered into itself the rich memories and sacred associations of fifty years.  A bountiful repast, spread with a generous hand, sentiments from full hearts, given and responded to, poems and short addresses from friends and guests, and not least in interest and importance, a written sketch, by Mr. Phillips himself, of many interesting incidents and events of local and social history, scattered through the many years of his life in Coventry, made friends and guests oblivious of time, until the golden day had set in golden light, perchance to furnish the golden link in the chain of events to be recounted at some future golden wedding.  Some very choice gifts testified the thoughtful regard of relatives

Sad Affair in Binghamton - Boy Killed

Chenango American, Greene, NY, October 3, 1867

On Tuesday afternoon of last week an affray occurred in Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], between a boy named Casper Friment, formerly of this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], and a boy named Judson Paddock, by which the latter came to his death.  It seems that a man named Wm. A. Tyler, living on Chenango St., near where it crosses the canal, had employed Casper to work on his premises, and especially directed him to keep the boys from stealing his butternuts.  On the afternoon mentioned above, a number of little boys gathered on the canal bridge, and called him names, whereupon Casper told them they must stop, or he would "lick them."

Paddock hearing this threat, told the boys that if Friment attempted to "lick" them he would have to "lick" him first, which caused a rencounter between the two, during which Paddock was hit by a stone weighing about half a pound, just above the ear, felling him to the ground. They were finally separated, and Paddock was taken home.  Soon After, Mrs. Paddock had Casper arrested for assault and battery, and lodged in jail.

About 4 o'clock the next morning Paddock died, and the coroner's jury, which was summoned, brought in a verdict that his death was caused by the effects of a blow upon the head by a stone thrown by Friment.

Casper's trial was to take place the fore part of this week, the result of which we have not learned.

Deaths

In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 1st inst., Jane Cameron [Barnard] wife of Mr. F.E. Barnard, aged 50 years.  This patient sufferer through a protracted and painful illness, has at last been called to her rest.  It was indeed an edifying scene to witness the meek submission, the trust, the endurance and the fortitude with which this dear disciple of Christ met all her sufferings.  With devout faith did she cling to her Saviour and feel the strength which He alone can supply.  Of a temperament singularly well balanced, firm yet gentle, sound in judgment, constant in friendship, as a wife and mother most devoted, as a friend and neighbor full of acts of substantial but unpretending kindness; her departure creates a melancholy void in all the valued relations of life.  The writer of this sad notice can truly say that a neighborly friendship of more than twenty years was never dimmed by the smallest passing cloud.  Though suffering much and long through an exhausting sickness, she at last passed calmly and quietly away.  The Pastor, the Chruch, the fellow members of the same household of faith, and society, will deeply feel her loss.  May God sustain the stricken household so greatly bereaved, by the comforts and solaces of His grace.

In this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 14th ult., Clarissa Page, wife of Orrin J. Page, aged 22 years, 9 months and 14 days.

Clarissa has gone to the home of the blest, / To that Home, of all homes the sweetest and best; / Where the wicked from troubling forever shall cease, / And all sighing is hushed, in sweet anthems of peace.

Her sweet face on earth we shall never see more; / All suffering and sorrow, with her is now o'er. / Tho' great is our loss, still greater is her gain / That thought should suffice to banish all pain.

Her seat is now vacant and hushed is her voice / Which so late in the buoyance of youth did rejoice; / But were blest in believing she's gone to that "home sweet home," / Where all who have loved her will finally come.

Mourn not bereaved husband, heave not the deep sigh, / Nor let grief's bitter tear, dim in sadness, the eye, / Submissively bow to "Our Father's " own will / To the wild throbs of sorrow say, "Peace, peace, be still."

Henry Woolworth, late of Triangle [Broome Co., NY], was kicked to death by a span of horses which he was driving on Friday last, in the village of Owego.  The animals taking fright and the end-board against which his feet were braced giving away, he was precipitated on their heels, when he received such injuries as to cause almost instantaneous death.  It is a remarkable coincidence that two other brothers in the same family have been killed under similar circumstances.

She grasped for the lost one in hopes of securing her by her clothing, and caught her shawl, which was detached by the effort, and the little one was soon carried by the current beyond all hope of rescue.  Every possible effort has been made for the recovery of the body, but as yet, has proved unsuccessful.

Charles Mason was the scene of a happy gathering on Monday evening of last week, on the occasion of the Silver Wedding or the 25th anniversary of his marriage.  There was a full attendance of the friends of the family in the vicinity as well as from abroad, and the gifts presented were magnificent and costly.  The "Silver Wedding" service was performed by Rev. Dr.  Tyler, of St. Thomas church, assisted by Rev. Mr. Smith, of Cazenovia. The attendance and presents were a good indication of the respect and esteem in which the worthy couple are held. We join with their many friends in wishing that the current of their lives may glide smoothly along to and far beyond that period of life when the silver lining puts on the golden tinge, and all shall respect and love them in a ripe old age.  Hamilton Republican

Willis Forbes, aged 59 years.  The deceased not only leaves a circle of relatives to mourn his loss, but the community and especially the church of which he had been a member and served as Deacon for years, feel his loss.  He was uniformly consistent in his Christian walk.  He was always regular and constant in attendance upon the meetings of the church.  Without display he always was doing what good he found to do, and when death came stealing over him he could sing "all is well, all is well."  Though enduring extreme pain at times, he found consolation in the Christian's hope--surely "the godly man ceaseth and the faithful fall from among the children of men."

Mrs. Addison Miller:  The death of this lady, cast a gloom over the neighborhood in which she lived, never before excelled by any event in its history.  She was an estimable lady, and her husband and friends, and the community generally mourn her untimely fate with heart felt grief.  Her funeral, which occurred on Thursday last, was a mournful one and indicated the love and respect in which she was held, the whole population of Ketchum's Corners and vicinity turning out en masse to pay the last sad rites to her memory. The funeral sermon by Dr. Paddock, of this village, was affecting, and worthy of the aged divine, who delivered it. The death of this lady has deeply afflicted Mr. Miller, and he deeply feels the loss of a wife tenderly loved.  Binghamton Repblican 28th ult.
