Death

Suggested on the death of Miss Mary Burr of Meredith, who is much lamented by all who knew her and most lamented by those who knew her best.

"Memento Mori"

Come thoughtless youth attend awhile, / Nor slight the warning voice, / That bids you while in health prepare / To lie a lifeless corpse.

Here you behold an opening bud / Just blooming into day / Laid low by Death's relentless hand / And turned to native clay.

Oft has the voice of this dear friend / Joined in the singing choir, / But now cold Death has sealed her lips, / You'll hear her voice no more.

Mourn not dear Parents - Jesus called, / She'll ne'er to you return; / Dear Brothers, Sisters, all must lie / Within the mouldering urn.

My pensive muse in sorrow mourns / I pause awhile to find / A mingled joy of fond regret, / That she in glory shines.
