The Utica Herald [Oneida Co. NY] says of the death of Mrs. Gerritt Smith: "The sudden death of Mrs. Gerritt Smith is announced. It occurred on Saturday morning and no particulars are given by the telegraph announcing the fact. It cannot be said to be unexpected, however, because it was not expected that she would long survive her lamented husband. She was ill at the time of his death and so prostrated by it that the worst consequences were immediately feared. Mrs. Smith was the second wife of Hon. Gerritt Smith, the daughter of Colonel Fitzhugh, a branch of one of the early families of Maryland. She was married in January 1823. She was a lady of rare virtues and of unusual culture. All of the philanthropic plans of her husband and her cordial sympathy and cooperation, many of them were the devising of her own kindly and thoughtful nature. As totally without ostentation as her husband, Mrs. Smith was the most unselfish of friends. Her life furnishes a fit chapter to that of the great humanitarian, whom she loved so sincerely that she had no wish to survive him. Mrs. Smith leaves two children, Mrs. Elizabeth S. Miller, of Geneva, and Green Smith, of Peterboro." [Ann Carroll Fitzhugh Smith, d. 6 March 1875, 1875, aged 70y]

Mr. St. John was born June 3d, 1773, and consequently has nearly reached his one hundred and second birthday. His earliest recollection is of his eldest brother telling of the battle of Bunker Hill and of his mother's weeping because this brother had enlisted for the war. He also remembers seeing the old continentals passing his father's house on their way from Boston to New York "Five prominent causes," a Walton clergy man remarks, "have conduced to his longevity, viz, industry, temperance, cheerfulness, an approving conscience, and a firm reliance on Divine Providence."
