A Terrible Calamity

A frightful accident occurred in a deep cut on the Syracuse and Chenango Valley Railroad, about one and a half miles north of Earlville [Madison Co. NY], on Monday morning of this week.  A large gang of men were at work in the cut, which is on the side of a hill, and on one side is forty or fifty feet deep, when, without a moment's warning, the steep bank caved in, burying about twenty of the men, and injuring many who were not caught under the bank.  The bank was composed of loose shell rock, with many large boulders which in rolling struck several of the workmen, doing them serious injury.  As soon as possible all the available force was set to work to exhume the bodies of those buried under the bank.  Of those taken out on Monday, three were dead, and one so badly injured that he cannot possibly live.  One more is known to be still under the bank, and of course must be dead.  Of those killed, two were horribly mutilated, the head of one being crushed into a shapeless mass, and the body of the other having been caught between two large rocks, mangling him beyond description.  Several of those who escaped with their lives had legs or arms broken, and many are otherwise severely injured.

The names of the killed are John Collins, Thomas Bressnahan, Dennis Hogan and Michael O'Shea.  The last named had not yet been taken out when we received our latest intelligence.  Hogan leaves a family of eleven children. A man named White is so badly injured that no hopes of his recovery are entertained.

It is said that the survivors are terribly excited and lay the responsibility of the terrible accident upon the "Boss," who refused to listen to those who warned him that the bank was unsafe.  We are informed that Hogan, one of the killed, remonstrated against the danger on the morning of the accident, but was informed by the "boss" that if he did not choose to work in the cut he could quit.

The accident is a fearful one and should serve as a warning against future carelessness in like dangerous places.

Death of F.W. Prindle, Esq.

From the Eau Claire (Wis.) Free Press, of December 8th, we learn that F.W. Prindle, Esq. a brother of Judge Horace G. Prindle, of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY] and a former resident of this county, died at that place on the 2d inst, aged 51 years.  The Free Press speaks of the deceased as follows:

"Mr. Prindle came from New York to this place in November 1866 and associated himself as a partner int the practice of the law, with W.P. Bartlett, Esq., of this place.  For four years he has been with us, and during that time, few, if any, have become more endeared to those that knew him, than Mr. Prindle.

"Quiet and unassuming in his manners, at first his acquaintance was limited, but as people became to know him, all were of one opinion, that he was a man of stern integrity, upright in all his transactions, a true gentleman, clear and accurate in the knowledge of his profession, he took a front and prominent position at the bar, and among the many, was considered one of our first and best lawyers.  Taken from us in the prime of life, when his intellectual powers had but fairly ripened into maturity.  We shall miss him from our midst as a citizen and among the members of the bar, as one of their brightest and most reliable members.

"We sympathize with his family and his many friends in this, their hour of affliction.  His goal of life, on earth, is past.  that limit to which we are all hastening, to him, has an end. The end on earth, is but the beginning of life."

In this town [Greene, Chenango Co. NY], on the 13th inst., Susan B. Ockerman, aged 61 years.

In Omaha, Neb. on the 8th inst. of consumption, Emma [Beals], daughter of S.D. and Grace E. Beals, formerly of this village [Greene, Chenango Co. NY], aged 22 years and 5 months.

In this village [Greene, Chenango Co. NY], on the 17th inst. Mr. Lyman Beach, aged 74 years and 8 months.

On Saturday afternoon last, our community was shocked by the announcement of the death of Lyman Beach, an old and respected citizen of this village.  The circumstances of the case are as follows:  Mr. Beach owned a building in this village which is occupied by Milo Webb as a Jewelry Store, &c.  At this place Mr. Beach made his headquarters, and, we believe, owned a portion of the goods in the store.  Just before his death Mr. Beach made some bone-set tea, he being somewhat indisposed, and went to one of the work benches which was used for galvanizing purposes, from which he took a tumbler containing a small portion of Cyanide of Potassium.  He poured the contents of the tumbler upon the floor and then put his tea into it.  From this tumbler he drank a small portion of the tea. After drinking the tea, he asked a young man in the store what was in that tumbler, saying that his tea tasted queer.  At this juncture Mr. Webb came in, and learning what had transpired, told Mr. Beach that the tumbler contained poison, and that he had better go immediately and get an antidote.  Antidotes were immediately administered, but the poison had already got too deep a hold upon the vital forces, and death ensued in about half an hour.

This sad accident should teach persons who have poisons setting around their places of business to keep them in such manner as it will be impossible for an accident to occur similar to the one it is our painful duty to chronicle.

BEEBE:  At the Eagle Hotel in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], Dec. 6th, after a lingering illness, Esther B. [Beebe], wife of Andrew J. Beebe, aged 44 years.

Death of Mrs. A.J. Beebe:  The many friends of this most estimable woman, whose demise is mentioned among the obituary notices, and who was well and favorably known, will be pained to learn that one whom they so much loved is dead.  Quiet and unassuming in demeanor, with heart and hand open to the wants of all, her highest adornments were the graces of a Christian character and life.  Her illness, which was painful and protracted, was borne with a hopefulness and fortitude seldom witnessed, evincing a disposition which the severest trials and suffering could neither ruffle nor change.  In this dispensation a vacancy has been left in many circles not soon or easily filled. We will not invade the sanctity of home to disclose the sad breach that has there been made, no attempt with futile words to portray the poignancy of a husband's grief or the sorrows of that disconsolate daughter.  They have the condolence of that large household, and the sympathies of the entire community, but how unavailing all.  He who tempereth the winds to the shorn lamb, in this their day of darkness must be their comforter and support.

By a dispatch to his friends in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], we learn that Mr. Everett E. Blossom, son of Mrs. David Griffing, of this village, died in New Berlin [Chenango Co. NY], at about two o'clock this (Tuesday) morning, of paralysis.  Mr. Blossom was engaged in the drug business in New Berlin and has resided there about two years.  His sudden death is a sad blow to his many relatives and friends.

A sad procession was that which moved from the depot on the arrival of the 12 o'clock train, on Monday last, with the remains of Miss Mary Bronson, daughter of Mr. Orin Bronson. A few weeks since news came from Illinois that a brother of the deceased was very ill with typhoid fever.  Full of sisterly love and anxiety she hastened thither to attend him in his illness.  Providence decreed that the ministering angle should herself be the victim of this terrible malady, for she sickened and died while the brother was recovering.  He was sufficiently restored to accompany the remains of the devoted sister to an afflicted home.  It was expected that the remains would arrive on Saturday evening, and preparations had been made for funeral services at the residence of her father, but owing to some delay they did not reach here until Monday noon, when the mournful cortege proceeded at once to the Methodist church where the funeral services were held.  Our citizens sympathize deeply with the afflicted family in their mournful bereavement. NY], aged 32 years.  He was a very worthy Christian young man, social, warm hearted and cheerful in his disposition.  He won many friends wherever he went and leaves a large circle of friends who deeply feel their loss.  His remains were brought back to his native place and laid to rest beside the loved ones that had passed on before.  And of him it may truly be said, none knew him but to love him; none named him, but to praise.

PHILLIPS:  At the residence of his father, in Coventry [Chenango Co. NY], on the morning of Nov. 20th, Charles E. [Phillips] second son of Edgar and Hannah Phillips, aged 25 years.

Young Phillips possessed in more than an ordinary degree those qualities of mind and heart calculated to secure esteem and friendship and though somewhat reserved in manner and retiring in habit, he did, by his noble and manly qualities, most warmly attach to himself all who were in any degree intimate with him.  About six months since, he was united in marriage to Gertrude, only daughter of J.S. Parker, of this town; and though he was then, and had been for some years, in delicate health, having settled pulmonary disease, he was yet looking hopefully forward to many years of happy wedded life.  While his death was so sudden that he refused to believe himself in any immediate danger, up to the very day before his decease, yet, when the truth was realized by him, that his end was close at hand, his faith in his Savior at once and with remarkable vigor sustained him, so that calmly and even triumphantly he was enabled to meet the dying hour.

Mr. Noyes Patrick, of Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY], arrived at Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY], last Wednesday on the 1 P.M. train.  He was overcome with fatigue by his walk from the depot and stopped at the Marsh House and sent for Dr. Yale, under whose care he has been for some time past.  While conversing he remarked that it was "growing dark" and immediately fell into the arms of the Doctor.  An examination showed that his pulse had stopped beating and that life had departed. Mr. Patrick was 52 years of age and had been afflicted with a disease of the heart for some time.  He leaves a wife and four children.

Death of Judge Campbell

Hon. Samuel Campbell, died at Stanwix Hall, in Albany [Albany Co. NY], on the 28th ult.  He belonged at Cherry Valley [Otsego Co. NY] and was one of the old lawyers of the State, who by a steady devotion to his profession, had accumulated a fortune and retired to the picturesque valleys of Otsego County to enjoy it.  He descended from the sturdy Americans of the revolutionary era, although, as his name indicates, his family was of Scottish origin.  His paternal grandfather, Col Campbell, of Cherry Valley, served in the early wars, and his mother was a Putnam of the same sturdy stock with the famous Connecticut general.  His ancestors lived in Otsego in the days when it was perilous border country, and his grandmother, with her five children, was at one time carried away into Canada by the Indians, among whom they lived two years.  Coming from such a race, young Campbell inherited qualities which could not fail to win success in a country like ours.  He was favored with a good education in his youth, and early chose the legal profession.  He went to New York city, and by his industry and talents made a fortune in 20 years and returned to the hills in which his youth was cradled, to enjoy a life of serene dignity and ease.  He purchased a large estate near the site of the parental acres on which he was born, and for many years has passed his days amid the many pleasures and elegances which a cultivated man can easily find or make in such a situation.

Death

A young man named Williams dropped dead while attending a dance in Tully a week ago last Friday.  He was on the floor dancing, when he made the remark to his lady that he felt faint and would go below.  He went downstairs without assistance, sat down in a chair and died.  Owing to the peculiar circumstances of the case, the matter has created considerable interest. From what we can learn it seems that his body remained warm for several days, and therefore his interment has been postponed twice, and the body subjected to bleeding, and some assert that the body was warm even at the time of burial.  But we are inclined to doubt that statement.  Mr. Williams was buried one week from the day he died.  Cortland Democrat.

By a private letter to a gentleman in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], we learn of the death of Wm. S. Thompson formerly of this village, and one of the old drug firm of Fox, Read & Thompson.  The letter states that he died about two months ago on William Tanner's plantation in Louisiana.  Mr. Tanner has relatives in this village and was acquainted with the deceased.  He found Mr. Thompson on a river steamer acting as cook, being sick and needy he took him to his home where he died.  A life insurance policy of $2,000 was found on his person.

BREED:  Suddenly, in Pharsalia [Chenango Co. NY], Oct. 13th, Martha Jane [Breed] wife of John G. Breed, and daughter of Alanson and Mary J. Coy, aged 18 years and 4 months.

A very serious accident occurred in the village of Harpersville [Broome Co. NY], yesterday afternoon, by which one of the children of W.E. Martin, Esq., a little girl, nine years of age, by name of Minnie May [Martin], was killed.  three children of Mr. Martin's were playing at the base of a sandbank, when the sand moved down, in a miniature avalanche, and covered two of them, the girl above named and a boy, Floyd, thirteen years of age.  They were covered to a depth of a foot and a half.  A smaller boy, Lincoln, who was untouched, endeavored to exhume his sister and brother, but without effect, and he hastened to the dwelling of a neighbor, Deacon Sornburger, and communicated the news.  Help was immediately obtained, when the boy Floyd was found alive and uninjured, though stupefied, and the girl was dead.  It is said that the two children were buried for the period of about a quarter of an hour, and it is regarded as almost a miracle that the boy escaped death. He said when uncovered, that he had been asleep.  His consciousness returned as soon as he was rescued.  The feeling at Harpersville, and in the neighborhood wherever the facts have become known, is of intense sorrow.  The girl was a favorite of the community, for her great amiability.  Indeed, the sense of loss is like that of a person of full age.  Binghamton Daily Republican, 28th, ult.

Died, at the Poor House in Preston [Chenango Co. NY], Oct. 18th, Abraham Tushnook, aged 82 years.  Many of our readers will remember this person when they call to mind an Indian, better known as "Old Abe," who years ago, frequented this vicinity and on public occasions like general trainings, amused the crowd and at the same time picked up a good deal of money by shooting pennies from a stick with a bow and arrow, with which he was very skillful.  He was born in Stockbridge [Madison Co. NY] and belonged to the Stockbridge Tribe.  He served in the war of 1812 under Captain Jacobs.  His attachment for the favorite hunting ground - the Chenango Valley - was strong.  what a change has taken place since he first trod the beautiful valley.

A Fly Creek correspondent of the Cooperstown Journal says that on the 12th inst., two boys of Mr. S. H. Chapin, aged 10 and 12 years, and a boy of Peter Edgett, were playing together, having been left at home alone.  The older Chapins boy, Charles, went into the house and got a shot gun that was loaded.  The Edgett boy, aged 8 years, took the gun and said he took off the cap, and then snapped the gun, when it exploded, the whole charge taking effect in the neck of Harvey Chapin, on the left side just below the angle of the lower jawbone, severing the carotid artery on that side and parting the trachea, causing instant death.

It will be remembered by many of our citizens, that Mr. Benj. B. Porter, long the efficient bookkeeper in the Maydole Hammer Factory [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], left this place some four years since with his family and took up his residence in the State of Delaware, remaining there something like a couple of years, He removed to Lawrance, Kansas, stopping at Aiken, South Carolina, a short time, hoping thereby to improve the health of his invalid wife.  In December last he buried his wife in Kansas, she having died a consumptive, leaving to his care three children, the eldest not yet ten and the youngest about one year old.  In April last, Mr. Porter, with his children, came East as far as Philadelphia, where he has since resided.  On Tuesday of last week, he returned to this place with his second child, Stella [Porter], aged about five years, to bury by the side of one he had lost while a resident of Norwich.  Not able to return at once from ill health, on Friday last a telegram brought the sad intelligence that Bennie [Porter], his youngest, aged about 2 years, and who was apparently well up to 24 hours before, was dead. The remains were forwarded by express on Saturday and are expected today (Tuesday) in time for the funeral.  Both the children died of diptheria.  Mr. Porter has the heartfelt sympathy of this community, and of his many friends in Chenango County in this his sad bereavement.

On Wednesday last, at about sundown our citizens were startled and horrified by the report that Daisy, the beautiful and charming little daughter of Mr. Frank Cowen, living in the southern part of this town [German, Chenango co. NY], was frightfully burned by her clothes taking fire from the stove.  She had been left in the kitchen while her parents were engaged at milking several rods distant from the house.  Screaming and with her clothes all on fire she rushed from the house and was met by her mother, who after being herself severely burned, succeeded by tearing off a portion of the girl's clothing in extinguishing the flames.  The next morning death came to the relief of the little sufferer.  She was [6] years of age.

L.B. Hopkins, of Lebanon, Madison County, was kicked by a horse on Thursday of last week and died from the effects of his injuries on the following day.  He was a young man of exemplary character, about twenty-three years of age, and universally respected.

Death of Almon H. Prime

The Franklin [Delaware Co. NY] Register of October 4th, contains the following notice of the death and burial of Croton, Delaware County, of Mr. Almon H. Prime, a former resident of Oxford [Chenango Co. NY]:

"On the evening of the last day of Fall's first and most beautiful month, another brother was called to the land [beyond the river, to the Celestial lodge above.' Almon H. Prime, a worthy brother of Delhi lodge has gone.  His remains were followed to the tomb on Sunday, October 2d, by his afflicted family and friends.  He was buried with true Masonic honors.  Representatives from fourteen lodges were present to pay the last tribute of respect to the brother who had gone to mingle their tears with those of his afflicted wife and children, and to speak the kindly word of consolation and hope to them.  The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.J. Hough.  Nearly 1,500 people were present, including 125 Masons.  It seems that much of the prejudice against the order which exists in this community, must have been softened or entirely eradicated by this exhibition of love amongst the brothers of the mystic tie. the procession first formed in front of the hotel and marched thence to the residence of the deceased.  When the services at the house had been performed, they reformed and marched to the place of interment, and there performed those solemn and impressive ceremonies which go to make a masonic funeral the most solemn and instructive in the world.  They then escorted the mourners back to their desolate home and there left them in the care of him who 'doeth all things well.' "

Suddenly, at his residence, in Smithville [Chenango Co. NY], on the 15th inst., Charles B. Miller, Esq., aged 66 years.  Mr. Miller was one of the oldest residents of Southern Chenango.  His whole life was passed among us.  He has been one of our earliest associates in pioneer life and has had important duty to perform in the conversion of a howling wilderness into the abode of civilization and refinement.  He has filled an important post in the various relations of life.  For very many years he filled the office of magistrate and was supervisor of his town.  He once represented his county in the legislature at Albany.  His varied attainments, and his high-toned integrity, made his counsel sought by all his acquaintances.  Quiet, calm, and urbane in his deportment to all, he secured the high report of all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.  He has been for many years employed in settling the estates of the departed, as executor or administrator.  In the various relations of life, he attained the appellation of the noblest work of God - "An honest man."  In all the social relations of life, he was a kind husband, a tender father, and the beloved of every neighbor. In the full exercise of those cardinal Christian virtues, "Faith, Hope and Charity," he has passed to his final reward.  Let the living emulate his virtues.

A man named Edwin Duffy was instantly killed by the cars on the U.C. & S.V. R.R., a short distance above the Midland junction, on Wednesday evening last.  He had started to walk to Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY] on the track, but fell asleep while under the influence of liquor, and was run over and killed by the evening train which arrives here at eight P.M.  Deceased has been in the employ of Elijah Upham, of Sherburne, and is said to have been an industrious, inoffensive man, but somewhat addicted to the use of intoxicating drinks.

Death at Lyon Brook Bridge

On Thursday afternoon of last week, a man fell from Lyon Brook bridge, at its highest point, and was instantly killed.  It appears from information that we have since obtained, that his name was John Lee, and his home as at Eaton, Madison County.  He came to Norwich to attend the Fair, but after imbibing pretty freely of whisky, took the Thursday afternoon train south, stopping at Lyon Brook with many others, who went down to see the famous bridge, but it appears that Lee remained.  A party of young men and girls got off the train from the south at the bridge, and Lee informed them that he was employed by the company to show the bridge to visitors and told them to follow him.  He said that it was necessary for the gentlemen to walk on one side of the bridge and the ladies on the other, while he walked the ties in the center, and in this order he marched the party to the highest point of the bridge. , immediately over the creek, where he ordered them to halt, informing them that they were at the highest point, and that he would now proceed to show them the most remarkable feat they had ever witnessed.  He then sat down on the ties, reached under and took hold of one of the iron rods, and let himself drop, no doubt thinking that he would be able to keep his grasp of the rod, but to the horror of the spectators, he fell to the bottom, a distance of one hundred and fifty-five feet mangling his body in a horrible manner, and killing him instantly.

Coroner Avery was immediately notified, and proceeded to hold an inquest, at which the above facts were elicited.  The body was not identified until Sunday, when Mr. Edwin Wilcox, of Eaton, happened in town on a short visit, and recognized it as that of John Lee, of Eaton.

The victim of this horrible tragedy was a single man, about thirty-years of age, and a painter by trade.  He has a married sister living at Eaton.  His frightful death is another fearful warning of the evils of intemperance, as there is not a doubt that he was intoxicated at the time.

Mr. Cary, undertaker, received a telegram from the friends of Lee on Tuesday morning, saying that they would come down and take charge of the body immediately.

Death of Merlin Jackson

JACKSON:  In Binghamton [Broome Co. NY], Sept. 26th, Merlin Jackson, Esq. aged 68 years, formerly of Afton [Chenango Co. NY].

Merlin Jackson, formerly of Afton, Chenango County, died at his residence, 21 Exchange Street, Binghamton, on the 26 ult. of Consumption.

Mr. Jackson was born in Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY], now Morris, June 6, 1802, and was a son of Uri and Charity (Moore) Jackson.  He began his business career as a teacher, and subsequently at 23 years of age he entered the store attached to the cotton factory in Butternuts, as clerk, but after a few years he began business on his own account

He was for many years a prosperous and successful merchant at Afton, but sold his business in 1855, after which time he lived in retirement.  In 1865 he sold his estate in Afton and came to this city [Binghamton].

His business career was uniformly marked by the strictest integrity and virtue, and many, very many, are the widowed and orphaned who will feel keenly the loss of a prudent counsellor and a tried and trusted friend and guardian.

He had by his great energy and determination delayed the issue of his disease for twelve years.  His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him in his former home, and he leaves in our midst a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.  Binghamton Daily Republican.

Death of Dr. Charles H. Ray

The public of Chicago were shocked on the morning of the 24th ult. on learning of the death of Dr. Charles H. Ray, editor-in-chief of the Evening Post, of that city.

Dr. Ray was a native of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], born in [1821], and will be remembered by many of our older citizens as a young man of rare intellectual endowments.  Having received a good education, he removed to the west in 1843, where he adopted medicine as his profession.  He afterwards entered the political arena, and became editor of the Jeffersonian, a daily Democratic paper published in Galena, Ill.  Political changes induced him to dispose of his paper, during the Kansas-Nebraska excitement, and after a brief period, during a portion of which he satisfactorily discharged the duties of the office of Secretary of the Illinois Senate, he became editor and joint proprietor of the Chicago Tribune, in 1855, which position he held until the winter of 1862-3, when he retired from it, to pursue other vocations.  In some speculations subsequent to this, Dr. Ray was unfortunate, and much of his earnings of the past were swept away.  In the summer of 1865, he resumed his connection with the Tribune, which continued until late in the fall, when he became editor-in-chief of the Post

We copy from that paper, of the 24th, from which we have condensed the above brief notice, the following in relation to his decease:

"Dr. Ray was attacked with brain fever about the 20th of last January.  After many weeks of great suffering, he so far recovered that he was able to proceed to Cleveland, where he received scientific treatment for some weeks.  He then proceeded to Massachusetts, where he remained for several weeks, returning about midsummer to Chicago.  Since, he has written a few articles for The Post, some of which were as good as any he ever wrote, but it was evident to his nearest friends that he had not completely recovered.  On Tuesday, the old malady returned upon him, and rapidly increasing in violence resulted in death, this morning, at a quarter past one o'clock."

Deceased was married in early life to Miss Jennie Yates Per Lee, of North Norwich, who died in 1862, leaving a daughter and three sons, who are now living. A few years since, he married Miss Julia Clark, of Iowa, who, with two daughters, survive him.

WICKS:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], Sept. 16th, of consumption, Mr. Marvin Wicks, aged 61 years.  His funeral was attended on Sunday, by a large concourse of Masons and Odd Fellows, he being an esteemed member of both Orders.

GRIFFING:  In North Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], Sept. 17th, Frank Griffing, aged 7 years.

COTTON:  In North Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], Sept. 11th, Charles U. [Cotton], aged 4 years; Sept. 13th May L. [Cotton], aged 7 years, and Georgie F. [Cotton], aged 2 years, children of Gilbert E. and Diana Cotton.

READ:  In Pharsalia [Chenango Co. NY], Sept 16th, Mr. Henry H. Read, aged about 60 years.

FRENDH:  In Panola, Ill. Aug. 25th, Rebecca [French], wife of James A. French, formerly of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], aged 48 years.

CRANDALL:  In Davenport, Iowa, Sept. 1st, Mary L. [Crandall] wife of Joseph A. Crandall, and daughter of Samuel Randall, formerly of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], aged 53 years.

A frightful accident occurred on the DeRuyter Branch of the Midland, on Saturday morning last, resulting in the death of John Donnelly, a laborer employed in fencing the road.  Donnelly, with others, started from this place early Saturday morning, on a hand car, which they attached by a rope to the engine of the construction train, which was being backed up, one end of the rope being held by Donnelly, who was cautioned by his companions that he was in danger of being jerked off, but who it appears disregarded their warnings.  When about three miles from the village, a sudden lurch of the engine on a portion of the road not yet leveled, threw Donnelly off his balance, and precipitated him onto the track, in front of the hand car, which ran over him. His companions picked him up insensible, placed him upon the hand car and brought him back to the village, where an examination of Dr. Avery showed that his head and face were horribly cut, and his left leg nearly severed at the ancle joint.  He lived but a few minutes after being brought to the village.  He is said to have been a steady and industrious man, about thirty years of age, and single.  He had two brothers employed in the same party, who were with him at the time of the accident,

In Coventry [Chenango Co. NY], on the 21st inst. Mrs. Sarah M. Baxter, aged 35 years.

Zenas Platt, of Vestal Centre [Broome Co. NY], who, with his wife, had been giving concerts in this vicinity, met with a serious accident on Thursday, Sept. 1st, which resulted in his death.  They had given a concert on that evening in the Brown School House in Barker [Broome Co. NY], and were just starting away, when the team gave a sudden spring, throwing him backwards out of the wagon onto his head and shoulders.  He was picked up insensible, and carried into the house of Robert Brown nearby, and Dr C.R. Rogers was soon in attendance, who ascertained that he had sustained serious injury about his head, probably fracture of the base of the skull. the result fully confirmed that diagnosis, and he died on Sunday morning last.  Broome Gazette
