News Item

In the trial of Isaiah Belfield at Morrisville, Madison County [NY] for the murder of Phoebe Crandall in 1865, the case was closed on Saturday after an 11 days' trial.  The jury was out two hours and a quarter and then returned with a verdict of acquittal.  Belfield was arrested on an indictment of assault and battery with intent to kill Henry D. Crandall, the husband of the murdered woman.  He is supposed to be one of three persons whom Mr. Crandall found ransacking his house one evening fourteen years ago.   He refused to give up his money and made a plucky fight but was shot and rendered unconscious.  When he came to he found that his wife had been killed.  He recovered and testified against Belfield in the recent trial.
