Deaths

The last Soldier of the Old French War in Canada is gone!  Died, in Warren County, Tennessee, on the 8th of June, Mr. John Luck (pronounced Lisk in his native Dutch) at the advanced age of one hundred and four years.  He was born on Staten Island, New York, on the 5th of Nov. 1714, and was of Dutch extraction.  Mr. Luck was in regular service for well-nigh 60 years!

Died at his residence in Ithaca [Tompkins Co. NY] on the 27th ult. the Hon. Adrew D.W. Bruyn, member of Congress.

At Philadelphia on the 1st instant, Commodore John Rogers of the U.S. Navy.

Died in the town of Conklin [Broome Co. NY] on the 21st ultimo, Mr. Elias Bevier aged 86 years.

In Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] on the 9th inst. Mr. Abner Gilbert aged 76 years.

Deaths

In Laurens [Otsego Co. NY] on the 16th inst. Mrs. Sylva Hyde aged 63 years.

In Morris [Otsego Co. NY] on the 19th inst. Mr. Elijah Gilbert aged 86 years.

At Whitesboro [Oneida Co. NY], March 13th in the 16th year of his age, John G. [Pattengill] only son of Lucia G. and Rev. O. N. Pattengill, formerly of Otsego Co. [NY].

In Rochester [Monroe Co. NY] on the 10th inst. Julia Crafts [Little] wife of William S Little, aged 26 years. The deceased was a daughter of the late Gen. Erastus Crafts of this county [Otsego Co. NY].

The telegraphic announcement on Wednesday last, that Lieut. George D. Allen of the 51st Regiment, was slain at the battle of Newbern, N.C., threw a feeling of gloom over our village [Cooperstown, Otsego Co. NY].  Lieut. Allen was a young man of good talent and the most exemplary character, who had won the confidence and esteem of our citizens. We believe he was a native of Westford [Otsego Co. NY]. He taught one of the District Schools of this village several terms. Soon after the breaking out of the war he was actively engaged in raising a company of which he was made 2d Lieutenant and was afterwards promoted to first.  His untimely death will be deeply regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.  F. Mr. Lester R. Miller of this village [Franklin, Delaware Co., NY], died suddenly on Friday morning last, probably from apoplexy.  He had been complaining somewhat and had a physician during the night preceding his death, who left him apparently better.  In the morning, Mrs. Millelr left the room for a short time, supposing him asleep and returned to his bedside, he was dead!

Mr. Miller was a native of Hartland, Ct., but has resided here most of the time for over twenty years. As a dealer in watches, jewelry ad silver wares, he had become extensively and favorably known in Delaware, Otsego, Greene, Chenango and other adjacent counties.  He conducted a large business on a scale of such fairness and integrity as to secure the public confidence and respect, and he will be much missed in many towns and neighborhoods to which he made his periodic visits.  Mr. Miller was a man of simple habits, unostentatious manners, a kind neighbor and a useful citizen.  He died at the age of fifty-one years.  Franklin Visitor, 19th inst.
