Stella (Beattey) Schworm
Died November 18, 1942
Edmeston [Otsego Co., NY]:  When her small flock of ducks swam away from their home near Wharton creek Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. Harry Schworm went in search of them.  Her body was taken from the raging creek waters two hours later.  Discovering that the ducks had disappeared, Mrs. Schworm and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert Schworm, went down to the creek banks.  Walking upstream, they soon came upon the flock, bobbing along a creek swollen by a steady two-day downpour.  The women threw sticks at the fowls but still were unable to drive them ashore. The elder Mrs. Schworm, 47, then climbed into a nearby rowboat.  Propelling herself by tugging at the branches of trees and bushes along the bank, she was able to move nearer the ducks and was closing in on the flock when the boat came to a strong cross-current.  Caught unawares, Mrs. Schworm grabbed the branch of a tree overhanding the stream to steady herself.  The boat, however, was snatched from beneath her by the current, leaving her dangling in the icy water.  Her daughter-in-law waded out until the water reached her neck and tried to push the boat back beneath the woman, but the current was to swift. She regained the shore and began running toward the village screaming for help.  Help arrived shortly, but it was too late, for the force of the water had broken Mrs. Schworm's grip and she had been swept downstream.  Her body was found in the center of the village.  Neil Card freed it from a log beneath which it had become wedged in 10 feet of water.  Principal G.H. Purple of the high school and Dr. E.C. Granger, coroner, applied artificial respiration and a pulmotor from Morris also was used to no avail.  It was just over two years ago, November 12, 1940 that Mrs. Schworm's son, Donald, was drowned in Big Moose lake when a canoe capsized during a hunting trip.  Drowned with the youth were his father-in-law, Thaddeus Chase of New Berlin, and a friend, Warren Parker of this village.   Stella Beattey Schworm was born in the town of New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY] 47 years ago, the daughter of Frank E. and Minnie Wheeler Beattey. She was married to Mr. Schworm on Oct. 19, 1914.  Mrs. Schworm was a member and past matron of the OES and attended the Methodist church here.  Surviving are three children, Earl, Leon and Robert; also her husband and a sister, Mrs. Earl Becker, Newark Valley. Services will be held from the Houk Funeral home at 3:30 Saturday afternoon, with Rev. Winfield Kelley, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Union cemetery, Edmeston.

Coroner Edwin C. Granger of Morris today issued a verdict of accidental drowning in the death late yesterday afternoon of Mrs. Stella Schworm, 47, of Edmeston.  Mrs. Schworm, using a home made boat, was attempting to drive some ducks to the shore of Wharton Creek when the boat overturned.  Her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Leonora Schworm, witnessed the accident from the bank, but hampered by heavy clothing and but a slight skill in swimming was unable to rescue her. The body was recovered by her husband, Harry J. Schworm, who with a friend administered artificial respiration until the arrival of a pulmotor from Morris, but all attempts at resuscitation were futile.  Mr. Schworm is survived by her husband; three sons, Robert, 23; Earl, 10, and Leon, 8; a sister, Mrs. Earl Becker, of Newark Valley, and several aunts and uncles.

Guilford NY History (1927)

Guilford History
Chenango Telegraph, August 19, 1927

Guilford [Chenango Co., NY] is a small town, pleasantly situated, nestling midst rugged hills on the southeast side of Chenango county and lies on the New York, Ontario & Western railroad [in 1927].  This railroad has a 668 mileage from New York to Oswego, crossing some of the most beautiful places in many different counties.  It crosses diagonally across this town and has some very heavy grades which occur especially in Guilford.  It attains an elevation of 390 feet of Guilford Center (railroad name Parker) 1,486 feet at Guilford village and 1,616 feet at the summit above the lake.

Guilford is 16 miles from the city of Norwich, the county seat, which lies on the north side of the village, seven and one-half miles from Oxford on the west and ten miles from Sidney, Delaware county, on the southeast.  Bainbridge lies eight miles over the hills south of Guilford.

Settlements were made as early as 1790.  Many of the old settlers came by a foot path, the only guide being blazed trees.

Roger Williams came to Guilford from Gloucester, R.I., and settled at Cable Pond, afterward the Guilford Pond creek and now Guilford lake.  In 1834 he removed to the second house below Guilford village which is now [in 1927] occupied by Charles Reynolds. Williams had six children, among whom was Anthony Williams, who remained on the old homestead until his death.  He was a descendant of Roger Williams of New England, whose fame made him prominent.

William Gunn came to Rockwells Mills in 1810 from Cambridge [MA].  He built here the first carding and cloth dressing establishment in the county.  The factory stood on the site of Rockwells stone mill.  The building was built about 1814 and was continued for many years afterward, but by the death of the Rockwells the mill was discontinued.

Another of the early settlers was Ezekiel Wheeler, who came from New Hampshire in 1790, settling first at Unadilla Forks.  In 1794 he came to Guilford and settled on a farm a little south of Latham's Corners.  In his log cabin in 1796 he opened a tavern which was the first in the town.

John Dibble settled in Guilford village in 1798.  When he came in there was but one log house and a small clearing on the site of the village and that was abandoned.  He died in 1806.

The first town meeting was held at the home of Jehial Parsons, March 1, 1814, and Samuel Smith was elected the first supervisor of Guilford and Daniel T. Dickinson town clerk.  In careful search of the town books it is found that the following have served as supervisors from 1865 to the present time.
1865-1867:  Sylvanus Shumway
1868:  Chester W. Rockwell,
1868-71, Randall E.Ingersoll
1872:  Henry W. Curtis
1873:  George H. Baldwin
1874:  Henry W. Curtis
1875:  George H.Baldwin
1876:  D.L. Shepard
1877-78:  K.E. Bunnell
1879-82:  George H. Baldwin
1883-87:  Harvey A.Truesdell
1888:  B.F. Smith
1889:  Frank S. Clark
1890-91:  B.F. Smith
1892:  Charlton Phillips
1893:  B.F. Smith
1893-97:  Truman F. Ford
18989-99:  C.D. Mickel
1901-02:  Charles S. Brooks
1903-06:  A.H. Wheeler
1907-12:  C.D. Mickel
1913-14:  Otto L. Ives
1915-19:  John H. Curtis
1920 to the present time [1927]:  C.D. Whittemore

Daniel S. Dickinson was an early settler in the town.  He was born in Goshen, Conn.  He learned the trade of carding and cloth dressing in the factory of C.W. Morse, which was located on the turnpike about three miles from Guilford.  He studied law in Norwich and was elected state senator from 1837-40; judge of the court of errors, 1836-1841, and lieutenant governor form 1842 to 1844;  presidential elector at large in 1844, when James K. Polk was elected president.  He was again elected to the senate from 1844 to 1851 and attorney general of the state in 1851-62.  The Guilford Center Presbyterian church has the honor of his being baptized there and received into the church membership.  He married Lydia, daughter of Dr. Colby Knapp who was the First physician in the town. Descendants of Mr. Dickinson still remain in the place [as of 1927], namely, F.T. Dickinson and Miss Flora Dickinson.

Guilford at the lake is becoming more and more popular each year as a place to spend the summer vacation and enjoy the pure air of Guilford climate and pass the time in good spirits.  Nearly every day boating, bathing and picnic parties are enjoyed. There are now about twenty summer homes with the prospect of more being built later and a store gas station and auto furnishing store.  In 1789 two Frenchmen, Mercereau brothers, settled at the mouth of Guilford Pond creek and erected the first mill in the town. The stream which passes through Guilford village is fed from the lake and has a fall of 140 feet.

A camp was opened in 1921 on the former Brooks farm at North Pond, which was later owned by Cuyler Adsit.  It was purchased by the Jewish people for the purpose of bringing their young girls and boys here to pass their summer vacation.  At this camp there are now [in 1927] twenty buildings for the summer guests, two mess halls, one social hall and a midway cottage for the accommodation of their city visitors and the parents of the children who "drop in" at different times.  Boating, bathing and nearly all kinds of jolly sports are indulged in. The camp is known as the Guilford-Oxford camp. There are nearly 300 people there now [1927].  Many improvements are being made each year.

The farm and house situated on Gospel hill, in which Isaac Weir now lives [in 1927], is said to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest house, in the town of Guilford.  For over 61 years the farm was owned by the Robinson family, having been purchased in 1859 of Charles B. Hyde by Franklin B. Robinson, who came here form Cortland, N.Y. The house was built by Deacon "Joe" Ogden about 133 years ago. Although many repairs have been made on the house, there is some timber in the building which still remans that is better than some of the later built.  The farm, which consists of 129 acres, was purchased the last week in July 1921, by Isaac Weir, who moved here from Milltown, Wis.

Many old settlers that figured in the early history of Guilford are buried in the Gospel hill cemetery, which joins the farm.  They are the Ingersolls, Sherwoods, Ogdens, Smith, Wades and Lucy Ella, oldest daughter of Franklin and Emmeline (Huntley) Robinson, and other families too numerous to mention. The farm lies close to the border line of the town of Oxford.

For a year and a half [in 1927] Guilford village has been lighted with electricity by the New York Electric Company. The lights were installed in December, 1926.  Fire protection commissioners were recently elected and fire hydrants have bene placed in the village. The officers are:  Commissioners, G.A. Richards, H.L. Hutchinson and Theodore Hoffman; Treasurer, F.S. Tripp.

There are here [in 1927] three grocery stores, one clothing store, one hardware store, one inn, one barger shop, one opera house, one feed store, one Sheffield milk station and two churches, Methodist and Episcopal.  At Guilford Center, a mile and a half below the village, there is a Presbyterian church, one grocery store, one inn, a milk station and a depot.

Jennie L. Sage
Died May 8, 1927, Honeoye Falls, NY
After a long illness, Jennie L. Sage entered into rest Sunday evening, May 8, 1927, about 6 o'clock, at her home in Honeoye Falls [Monroe Co., NY].  On January 9 she received a bad fall when descending the steps of a store in the above place and her hip was fractured. After weeks of intense pain and suffering she improved somewhat and was able to sit up for short periods.  Then came a series of cerebral hemorrhages and death ultimately followed.  Everything that loving thought could suggest or hands do, was done for her relief and comfort by her niece with whom she lived and her sister, Mrs. O.T. Angell, but without avail. The deceased was a daughter of Nelson Sage and Harriet Greene and was born September 25, 1861, on the old Sage homestead below this village, the farm now owned by Carl Jacobsen.  Her ancestors were among the pioneers in this section in the early days of its settlement. She grew to young womanhood in this community and here spent the larger part of her life.  Mrs. Sage was a teacher of much ability and skill and many years of her younger life was spent in that profession. She was preceptress of the New Berlin High School for a number of years, also taught in the school here. The block on the corner in this village now owned by Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Fanning was the Sage home for many years. Nearly four years ago she moved to Honeoye falls to make her home with her niece, Mrs. Lewis Peck. A large circle of friends and relatives here will sadly miss her frequent visits, her good cheer and sympathetic interest. Hers was a strong personality.  She possessed a keen intellect, a rare courage and hopefulness in the face of many ills, often winning out through sheer grit and patient endurance when others might have given up in despair.  Her cheerfulness was always paramount, and an example long to be remembered by those who knew her. She was a member of the Baptist church in Honeoye Falls, until recently a member in this place, an earnest Christian woman whose love for her Saviour found expression in deeds of kindness to others and in loyal service to the Master. She was a member of the Eastern Star at Sidney and also the Col. Israel Angell Chapter of D.A.R. at New Berlin. Two brothers survive, Jewett P., of Norwich, and Henry N. of this place, and one sister, Mrs. O.T Angell, of Mt. Upton, also two nephews and one niece. The remains were brought to the home of her brother in this place on Tuesday evening, and the funeral held on Wednesday at 10 a.m., from the Baptist church.  In the absence of Rev. M.R. Weaver, Rev. W.A. Ashmore of the First Baptist church in Norwich conducted the service.  Many relatives and friends from out of town were in attendance. The floral tributes were beautiful.  She was laid at rest in the family lot in Riverside cemetery.

Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman
Died July 12, 1936, Plattsburgh, NY

Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman

Plattsburg [Clinton Co., NY]:  Dr. S. Parkes Cadman, internationally known "radio preacher," died at the Champlain Valley Hospital here yesterday.  The 71-year-old pastor of the Central Congregational Church, Brooklyn, succumbed at 1:22 p.m. to peritonitis which developed from a ruptured appendix.  At his bedside were his daughter, Marie Cadman, who had given her blood in transfusion several days ago in the hope of saving his life; his son, Frederick L. Cadman, and the latter's wife; Dr. Layman G. Barton Jr. who performed an emergency operation last Monday and Dr. George l. Buist, his personal physician.  Dr. Cadman was stricken last Sunday night before a speaking engagement at the Methodist Church at Westport, near here. Despite his suffering, he insisted upon making his address, a plea for world peace, before a congregation of 1,500.  The body left Plattsburgh last night by train for Brooklyn. The funeral will be in the Central Congregational Church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock.  The last pulpit effort of the noted preacher, the plea for peace, was a cause to which he had devoted much of his time.  He was Vice president of the World Alliance for Internal Friendship Through the Churches.

Middletown Times Herald, July 13, 1936
"There's a lot of interesting news in the paper this morning, but before we go into it, we wish to pay tribute to a great man--Dr. S. Parkes Cadman--pastor of Central Congregational church, Brooklyn; former president of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America, and first clergyman to make wide use of the radio.  Dr Cadman died in Plattsburg yesterday at seventy-one,.....

"We were a Cadman fan almost from the first sermon he preached over the radio, and during several years we missed few of his talks.  We were always impressed with the self-abnegation of Dr. Cadman and his effort to impress on his hearers that they shouldn't take themselves too seriously, placing more dependence on God and less upon man."

Stephen Curtis
Chenango Semi-Weekly Telegraph, June 3, 1891
Stephen Curtis died May 26th, 1891.  The funeral services were largely attended at the house  May 28th, conducted by Rev. LC. Hayes.  Mr. Curtis was fifty-one years of age and a life resident of this vicinity.  He was one of thirty-seven that were baptized by Rev. A.M. Totman twenty-one years ago and joined the Free Baptist Church of Holmesville of which he remained a member until his death and during all these years, until his health failed him, was our tenor singer.  His name was always down for the support of the ministry and the church expenses, he was the business clerk from his conversion.  If all members were as peaceable as Stephen Curtis there would be no contention in our churches.  His four brothers, Oscar, Joseph, Frank and Edwin, and their wives came to see him the Sunday previous to his death.  He seemed much pleased and knew them all, but never realized much after that.  He leaves a wife and little daughter to mourn the loss of a very kind and indulgent husband and father, and the chruch and community at large deeply mourn the loss of our brother and friend.  His remains were placed in the South New Berlin Cemetery.
