We learn from the Hamilton Union, that a little son of Mr. Black, landlord of the hotel at South's Valley, in the town of Lebanon [Madison Co., ,NY], was so badly burned on Sunday, the 22d instant, that he died on the following morning.  It seems that the mother was absent at a neighbor's leaving the child in charge of the father, At the time of the accident, the little fellow, who was only two years old, was sitting in a chair at the table, looking at the pictures in a book.  The father went out for the purpose of getting a pail of water and while absent heard the screams of the child.  He immediately returned to the house, and found the child almost entirely engulfed in flames, but before he could be extinguished the child was fatally burned.

On Friday evening last the dwelling (a log house) of Mr. Alvah Briggs, situated near what is called Briar Street, in the town of Davenport [Delaware Co., NY], took fire and burned to the ground, five of Mr. Brigg's children, the oldest 17 and the youngest 3 years of age, being burned to death.  One boy, aged 15 years, escaped, but so narrow was his escape that is hair was badly singed  Mr. Briggs and his wife were absent on a visit at the time, and reached home just as the house and its previous contents had burned up.  It is supposed that the fire took from some shingle shavings.  It seems that the lad who had been shaving shingles, throwing the shavings into the fire in an open fireplace and the shingles under a flight of stairs close by; it is supposed that after the children had retired the shingles took fire from the shavings and spread with such velocity as to render the rescue of the five unfortunates impossible.  The calamity is indeed a terrible one.  Delhi Express

Death Loves a Shining Mark:  It is with a feeling of sadness we learn that a useful and well known citizen of Windsor , Broome county [NY] has been suddenly removed from earth.  Gideon Hotchkiss, Esq., died at Goldsboro, Wyoming Co., Pa. on the 11th inst. of a short illness.  He was traveling on business, and from exposure in a cold room, took a violent cold, which so prostrated him that he sent for his wife and friends. The messenger found Mrs. H. too ill to leave home, even to close the eyes of a beloved and worthy consort.  A friend, Mr. Guernsey, went on, and arrive in time to witness his decease.  Mr. H. was widely known and esteemed as an inventor, and his usefulness will live long after his ashes shall have mingled with earth.  At one time he worthily represented his county in the legislature.  In all the relations of life, as a citizen, a Christian a husband and father, he was a man without reproach, and his loss will be deeply felt and lamented not only in the domestic circle where he was most loved and appreciated, because best known, but also by a wide circle of friends, and acquaintances extending throughout many States of the Union. We can only express our heartfelt sympathy and condolence with the bereaved widow, children, relatives and friends, and with the church to which he has belonged for many years. The funeral took place at Windsor on Thursday, the 16th inst.  Deposit Dem.

A Mystery Unraveled - A Murder Not a Murder

Many of our readers will remember an excitement which prevailed in this vicinity, some fifteen years since, occasioned by a report that a man named Mix had been murdered, a short distance above Smithville Flatts [Chenango Co., NY].  The facts were that Mix had been to this village with a load of flour, which he sold, and started on his return home, which was in Locke, Cayuga Co.  Mix did not return home, but his wagon and horses were found in the road somewhere near Smithville Flatts.  Every circumstance conspired to convey the idea that he had been murdered for his money. The whole community turned out in a vain and fruitless search for the body of the supposed murdered man.  Woods and swamps were searched, ponds dragged, houses ransacked, but no trace could be found.  Several remarkable dreams were related, pretending to throw light upon the matter and suspicion pointed strongly at certain persons; suspicion which has not been removed from the minds of many to this day, and it has since been currently reported that one of the suspected parties made a confession of the murder on his death bed.  We have reliable and responsible information that Mix is now living in one of the interior towns of this State.  He has been to California, but has returned, and our informant knows his whereabouts. We will give the necessary information to any person desiring to investigate this matter for the purpose of clearing up character, or for any other legitimate purpose.  No doubt some of those people who spent days and weeks in the swamps of Smithville, endeavoring to find his body, would like to get a sight at it now.  Chenango American.

Died:  In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 24th inst. Charlotte [Monell], wife of Hon. Robert Monell, in the 69th year of her age.  The friend whose decease is above noticed has been long a resident in this place.  United in the marriage relation for a period of nearly fifty years, she leaves a lonely home to her surviving partner.  Her last sickness was long and painful. She could truly say with one of old, "I am made to possess months of vanity and wearisome nights are appointed to me," yet as a Christian, she found God's grace sufficient for her and His strength made perfect in weakness.  Seldom is it that the shaft aimed so surely by death is thus delayed. The dying pillow was soothed and softened by the ministrations of loving hearts, and it is a comforting thought that so many of the passive virtues of the Christian character were concentrated in the chamber of sickness and on the couch of anguish.  At the closing moment, the spirit passed away like a candle blown out by the wind.  "Night dews fall not more gently in the ground; Nor weary worn out winds expire so soft."  A large circle of friends will cherish the memory of her virtues and realize that though her departure has left a sad void among them, yet she is now at rest, in a land where pain and anguish can never wring the brow.  In a land "whose inhabitant can never say I am sick."

Death by Drowning:  As Mr. Frederick D. Eldridge, a resident of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], was riding with his wife, on the bank of the canal near Mr. Maydole's Hammer Factory, in that village, Wednesday evening, of last week, the horse became frightened, and backed off into the canal.  In consequence of the waste weir being near, the current is swift at the point where they fell in, and the water unfrozen.  Mr. Eldridge called for held, which was immediately rendered, and he was taken out somewhat bruised, but his wife could not be found until after a search of nearly an hour, when her body was fished out near the place where they were precipitated into the water.  Efforts were made for her resuscitation, but without avail.

Chenango American, Greene, NY, January 12, 1850

A shocking and unnatural crime was committed in the southeast part of this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], about two miles from the village, on Friday, the 6th inst.  The particulars of this affair, as developed upon an investigation had before Justice Reynolds, of this village, on Tuesday last, are as follows:  Julia Ann Cady, a married woman, is the mother of a bastard child, born before her marriage with Cady. She is a woman of very unprepossessing appearance, and is a low, degraded being.  She has repeatedly threatened the life of the child, a girl about 4 years old.  About noon on Friday last, the mother and child were alone in the house; the mother took a pail and went to the neighbors, ostensibly to procure a pail of water.  While there her house was discovered to be on fire.  Upon the neighbors assembling, the fire was found to proceed from the bed, and was speedily extinguished. The child was found out doors, badly burned, especially about the arms and head.  The mother accounted for the fact, by saying that some of the neighbors must have put the child in the bed and set the bed on fire. This unreasonable statement, added to the fact that the child's burns did not correspond with having been burned in the bed, and that it had on a sack gown which covered a portion of the burns, and which gown was not burned at all, excited suspicion that the woman herself was the cause of the burning; whereupon her arrest was caused upon a charge of assault with intent to kill.  From the child's own statement and from the evidence adduced and circumstances developed, it appears that the fiendish woman stripped the child of its clothing, and put its head foremost into the stove, holding it there until she supposed it dead; then putting on it the sack gown, she placed it in the bed and set the bed on fire, and went to the neighbors.  The child however recovered itself so far as to escape from the bed and out of doors where it was found.  The child is seriously and perhaps fatally burned, its face being one complete blister.  Mrs. Cady has been committed to jail, to await the action of the Grand Jury.

Vital Records, Greene, NY - November 1859

Chenango American, Greene, NY, November 3, 1859

In Morris, Otsego Co. [NY], on the 12th ult. Capt. Dan Smith, in the 85th year of his age.  The departure from life of a good citizen who has lived to a great age in the respect and esteem of his fellow man, deserves something more than the customary brief obituary [announcement].  Captain Smith was born on the 30th day of May 1774, in Chepachet in the State of Rhode island.  He was cousin to the late Elisha Smith, Esq. of Norwich, and was descended through his mother in a direct line from Elder Charles Brown who was the first Baptist Clergyman of Rhode Island.  He removed in early life on to a lot of land which he had purchased in Plymouth, Chenango Co. [NY], still remembered as "Smith's Clearing."  Selling that, he located in Butternuts, Otsego Co [NY] near Gilbertsville, where he acquired and himself chopped and cleared up 200 acres of land.  In 1809 he established himself on a newly purchased farm one mile south of the village of Morris (then Louisville) where for half a century and until his death he continued to reside.  He there kept for many years a Public House, and it was at his house where the Militia Company were drafted for the war of 1812.  He was one of the seven old citizens of Morris who built the Factories at Morris and engaged in the manufacture of cotton goods, and no man had done more than he to found and sustain that beautiful village.

Captain Smith was married in 1800 to Miss Roxce Donaldson who died in 1857 at the age of 78.  they have had twelve children of whom nine still survive, viz:  Hon. Addison M. Smith, of Morris; J.C. Smith late Surrogate of Kings County; and Lucius Smith of Brooklyn; Rev. Henry R. Smith of Leesburg, Va; Mrs. Ferdinand Walker, of Detroit; Mrs. George J . Peck and Eliza B. Smith of Morris, Edwin Smith, of Sycamore, Ill; and Dan Smith, Jr., of Brooklyn; and all but the two last named were present at his funeral, which was attended on Sunday, the 16th ult. by a very large concourse of citizens.

The deceased discharged throughout his long life the whole duties of a good husband, father, neighbor and citizen; was industrious and prudent, liberal in his aid to the deserving poor and devotedly kind to his family.  Without making an ostentatious profession of religion, he lived in the practice of the Christian virtues.  In his politics he was of the school of Washington, loving the whole country and attached to the Constitution, and the Union as the only means of securing the blessings of liberty.  He had often spoken of death and expressed desire to retain his reason unimpaired to the last, remarking that he did not wish to live through another winter, nor to become infirm and helpless, that he had done with the v..tics of the world and stood ready to go when God called him.  His wishes in this were granted.  He retained his faculties, mental and physical, to his closing days and passed gently and peacefully from the world.  Blessed is the memory of the just.

Vital Records, Oxford, NY - November 1859

 Oxford Times, November 2, 1859

Died:  In this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 29th, Sarah Jane Newkirk, in the 29th year of her age.  The life of this young lady was a very beautiful exemplification of the Christian graces.  Early dedicated to the Lord in the Sacrament of Baptism, of great natural amiability of temper, and from her childish years manifesting a tender conscientiousness and a very high degree of religious sensibility; at the age of sixteen she took upon herself the vows of the Christian covenant, in the Apostolic rite of confirmation, and soon after was admitted to partake of the support of the Lord.  Her career thenceforward was a singularly uniform and consistent one, rich in those fruits which demonstrated her faith to be a living, effective principle and not merely emotional or sentimental.  Whatever duty she undertook was punctually, constantly and perseveringly performed.  As a Sunday School Teacher, in which capacity she labored faithfully for many years, she was eminently successful in winning the affection of her pupils, the secret of her influence over them being a heart full of loving interest in their spiritual welfare, and so unfailing as to constrain her to continue her kind offices in their behalf even after a due regard for her declining health demanded that she should absent herself from the school.  As a member of St. Paul's choir she exhibited a like fidelity.  In gentle offices to the sick or needy she was ever prompt.  An affectionate daughter and sister, a constant friend, a cheerful companion, an exemplary Christian; of such tenderness for the feelings of others, that the apprehension of having by word or act, caused another pain would not suffer her to rest until she had done what she could to make reparation for the supposed offence.  Her removal from our midst has created a vacancy in our little community which will long be felt by those who knew her best.  Of a more than usually diffident and retiring disposition, she seemed to shrink from speaking much about her religious experience. We have ever observed a like reluctance in them, in the depth and reality of whose piety we had most reason to confide. But from those who marked well her life and conversation, the grace within, which fashioned them, could not be hidden.  Her humility, too, forbade the making a display of her feelings. True evangelical goodness has no consciousness of its own worth.  It prostrates itself at the foot of the Cross, and pleads not its own merits, but the forgiveness of its unworthiness and imperfection for Jesus' sake.  Such was the Rock upon which our departed sister built her hope.  And well did it sustain her in the trying hour.  When apprised that her end was at hand, she welcomed the message which summoned her hence and looked joyfully forward to that "rest which remaineth for the people of God." The bed of death was made to appear to those who surrounded it as the very threshold of Paradise.  Wondrously did her Savior sustain her. To sum up all in one little word, her own song of victory, her end was "peace, prefect peace."

Died:  In this city [Houston, Texas] on the 19th of Oct. of yellow fever, Frances [Perkins], wife of Alvin S. Perkins, late of Oxford, N.Y. [Chenango Co.].  Though this estimable lady has been but a short time among us, she had won the esteem and love of all who came within the circle of her influence, uniting as she did the charms of warmest friendship with the faith and practice of a Christian.  Almighty God has in His wisdom taken from the church a true daughter, from her family a faithful and devoted wife, mother and sister, and from her friends if possible, a more than friend.  But we may give Him thanks for the good example of this humble and faithful servant, who having finished her course in faith, now rests from her labors.  Her last words were "It is finished."  Yes, her race is run, her battle fought, her victory won. She now dwells with Him who is the resurrection and the life.  "Tis sweet, as year by year we lose / Friends out of sight, to muse / How great in Paradise our store.  Houston Telegraph

[Chenango Co.].  Honored by all, as faithful in every worldly trust, yet honored as a true and consistent follower of Christ, has this beloved friend walked with us, during the past 20 years.  Since the organization of the Protestant Episcopal Chruch in Texas, Mr. Perkins has been a Warden or Vestryman, of either Christ's Church, Houston, or St. Paul's Church, Galveston.  His consistency and devotion in this respect, was characterized in the quiet and unobtrusive faithfulness of a Godly and consistent life.  Beyond common allotment his last illness was protracted, but the language of gratitude and appreciation of the blessings, as he termed them, by which he was soothed and comforted and with that peace which passes all understanding, he met his Master's call, resigned his beloved wife and sightless boy into the hands of Him who gave them.  But these friends whom he hath left in the darkness of affliction, have the brightest hope to cheer them, that the path of the just, even though it passeth through the valley of the shadow of death, is as the shining light which shineth more and more unto the perfect day.  The brightest record which mortal can leave, was his.  His name so dear to earth, is now written in the book of life, by Him who says "Whosoever liveth and believth in me, shall never die."  Peace child of God, / Thy earthly trials are o'er, / The thorny path is trod / Thy Shepherd trod before / Full well he kept his word / I'm with thee to the end; / Fear not, I am the Lord / Thy never failing friend  .... Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, March 25, 1840

Died:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Thursday, the 19th inst., of Scarlet Fever and Canker Rash, Girard [Smith], the son and only child or --nes H. Smith, Under Sheriff of this county, aged 8 years and 6 months.

There was an early determination of the disease to the head which deprived him of reason, except at short intervals, after throwing him into a state of frantic wildness.  This rendered his sickness, much of the time, heart-rending and agonizing.  Of a sudden, nature sunk, the storm subsided, and he fell quickly into the peaceful slumbers of death, greatly to the relief of his agonizing parents and attendants.  His funeral sermon was preached by Rev. A. Wheelock, Pastor of the Baptist church in this village from Isa, 52, 7  "Thy God reigneth." The speaker endeavored to illustrate the doctrine of the wisdom and goodness of God in the dispensation of the darkest and most mysterious Providences.  Thus has died among us another as lovely a child, probably as ever lived.  Girard was comely in his person, possessing one of the sweetest dispositions, and in his manners was uncommonly graceful and attractive.  He loved the sanctuary and was always cheerful and glad to accompany his pious parents to the house of God for their sabbath devotions  A smile of gladness was often seen lit up upon the countenances of the father and mother as they marked the sprightliness of their boy and observed the modesty and gracefulness of his manner in entering the church.  He was one of the idols of the sabbath school, full of animation, imparting life and spirit to his class, and to the public examinations which are conducted by the Pastor during the sabbath informations.  What he was in the sabbath school room, he was also in the domestic circle; constituting a kind of central attraction to all the family and giving a zest to all their enjoyments, especially during the more leisure hours of their winter evenings, when they reckoned upon being enlivened by Girard and his books.  He studiously avoided the company of wicked persons and was so shocked at the profanity he occasionally heard in the streets, that he could not be persuaded to repeat the oaths he had heard.  He manifested a deep interest in pious persons and in religious devotions, often followed his pious step-mother to mingle his prayers with hers in secret.  At times, also [..unreadable..] altar, he has unsolicited followed his father in prayer.  Precious child!  He lived long enough to win to himself many friends, and died after three days dreadful sickness bemoaned and bewept by the aged and the young.

Three lovely babes she has laid in the tomb.  A mother's care, a mother's love could not save them.  But she has gone to join them in the skies.  Oh how she loved them, the flowing tear, her look so full of tender sorrow is present to me now.  But why should we sorrow?
