And truly was it remarked, over her grave, that her discrimination in selecting her friends, her studious regard for morals, her exemplary walk through life, her love of the house of God, and her sympathy for the sufferings of the unfortunate, rendered her virtues worthy of being recorded, and her life a pattern for imitation. In Columbus [Chenango Co., NY], on the 7th of September inst., Mrs. Rachael Cooke, wife of Mr. Philip Cooke, formerly of this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], aged 17 years.  The deceased had for many years been an exemplary member of the Baptist church and the patience and resignation with which she bore a protracted and painful illness, and the duly expression of her willingness to attend the summons of the King of Terrors, fully evinced that she was prepared for her last sad hour of trial.  Her funeral sermon was preached by Elder Cutler from the following text of her own selection.  "All the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come."  Job VIV 14 [Sept. 12, 1832]

In Preston [Chenango Co., NY] on the 24th ult. after a lingering illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude Mr. Sylvester Miner, a soldier of the Revolution, aged 76 years.  He was more than seven years in the service of his country and in many hard-fought battles.  He underwent all the hardships and privations incident to a soldier's life, including sickness and hunger, and thirst and nakedness, and almost death itself.   [Sept. 12, 1832]

She has left a husband and family, and numerous friends to lament her loss.  "Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end by like his." [Sept. 19, 1832]

Between 7 and 8 o'clock on Sunday evening last, Geo. Denison, of Columbus [Chenango Co., NY], aged 28 years, shot Reuben Gregory, of the same town, aged about 19, and instantly killed him. Denison had a slight quarrel two or three days before with the father of young Gregory; went to his house with the intention, as is supposed, of killing the elder Gregory; fired in at the outer door, lodging a charge of shot in the face, neck and breast of young Gregory.  Denison secreted  himself nearby during the night, was taken on Monday morning, confessed his guilt, and is now in the jail of this county to await his trial. [Oct. 3, 1832]

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Saturday morning last, Miss Mary Holton, aged 41 years [Nov. 28, 1832]

At Litchfield Medina County, Ohio, on the 16th of October last Mr. Rufus Nash, of Sandford, Broome County N.Y. in the 34th year of his age.  He was attacked with the malignant cholera and survived the attack about 24 hours. He was a member of the Presbyterian church in Sandford and is lamented by all who knew him.  He died as he had lived in the confidence of his God.  His reason to the last was unimpaired and with composure he saw the hand of Death doing its office and joyfully resigned his spirit into the hands of his Redeemer.  Rev. XXI, 4th:  "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away." [Dec. 5, 1832]

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Monday the 10th inst., Mrs. Susan Hurlburt, aged 47 years. [Dec. 19. 1832]

In Greene [Chenango Co., NY], on Monday, the 3d inst., Mr. Asa Jones, aged 93 years.  the previous day, while sitting at the table, in usual health, he experienced a paralytic attack, which terminated fatally in about ten hours.  Mr. Jones was one of that band of patriots who practically pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor in the cause of our Independence.  Perhaps few individuals who survived that arduous contest, which resulted so auspiciously, have given greater evidence of their devotion to the cause of patriotism.  Although he did not belong to the regular Continental establishment but for a short time, yet he held himself in readiness and promptly obeyed the calls of his country, as a volunteer, in different expeditions and at various times during the term of five years. The residence of his family (in the county of Westchester) was such as to expose them in a peculiar manner to the depredations of the enemy; and it was not unusual for him to return home, after a tour of duty, and find his family dispersed, his crops destroyed, and his cattle driven off.  He was in several engagements during the war, in one of which he was second in command of a select party of 23 men, who were attacked by 65 British dragoons; and after a sharp engagement the enemy retreated, leaving three men and seventeen horses dead on the field.  For this act of bravery, the two commanding officers were honored by the receipt of a letter from Gen. Washington approbating their conduct and promising them that their services should be rewarded by promotion when an opportunity should occur.  Mr. J. was just about to realize the benefits of the late act of Congress, having received a certificate for a pension; but the gratitude of his country, in this instance, has been too tardy to afford the means of lightening the burden of age.  [Dec. 19, 1832]

Anti-Masonic Telegraph, Norwich, NY, December 7, 1831

Died:  On the evening of the 21st inst. in this village, Charles W. Miller, after a severe and protracted sickness.  He had been for the last two years sole Editor and Proprietor of this paper, and until within a few days of his death, although he was too weak to write, he had selected matter for its columns.  While he was in health, he had conducted it with talent, and given his paper a character of which his friends were proud.  In the prime of life, with a vigorous and clear mind, and ripe judgement, life was beginning to open to him under the fairest auspices.  It had been chequered, it is true, for although but 23 years old at the time of his death, he had not been an idle or heedless spectator of the outrages which were committed in this county upon the person of William Morgan and his father. These scenes are all passed; his budding hopes and the fond expectations of his friends, and he had many, are buried in his grave.  Republican Advocate, of November 24, 1831

Anti-Masonic Telegraph, Norwich, NY, February 16, 1830

Death

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Saturday evening last, Mrs. Lucy Ann Wheeler, wife of Cyrus Wheeler, aged 31 years.  In the death of this amiable young woman, who bore a long and protracted illness with patient forbearance and Christian fortitude, society has lost one of its brightest ornaments, an affectionate husband a kind and tender wife, and a small family of children the protecting care of a mother whose loss is irreparable.

We have the painful task to perform of recording the death, by fire, of Mrs. George Harper, of Windsor [Broome Co., NY].  The particulars of this melancholy event as far as we can learn, are as follows.  On Thursday last Judge Harper went to Owego, leaving Mrs. Harper, two hired men and a maid servant at home. Between four and five o'clock next morning, Mrs. Harper discovered the house to be on fire, and ran out and gave the alarm to the other members of the family, she then returned into the house in order, as is supposed, to secure Mr. Harper's papers; but on attempting to leave the  house a second time she found her retreat cut off by the flames, which spread with frightful rapidity. The shrieks of Mrs. Harper soon informed the other inmates of the dwelling of her perilous situation; they immediately rushed to the spot, but were unable to afford her any assistance.  Her body was afterwards found, burned entirely to a cinder. We believe there was not a single article of any description rescued from the devouring flames.  Broome Republican

Deaths

In Coventry [Chenango Co., NY] on Sunday morning, the 13th inst., after a short and painful illness, Mr. Lory Case, aged 45 years.  In the death of Mr. Case, society has been deprived of one of its brightest ornaments, a worthy member of the Presbyterian church in this place, a citizen in whom were concentrated all the virtues that make a man esteemed and beloved.  His memory will long, long remain as a sweet savour in the mind of his acquaintances and relatives.

It may be interesting to some of our readers to know, that a half blood Indian, called Jakc, of some notoriety in our Revolutionary war, died at Harsimus, New Jersey, on the 2d inst. at the advanced age of 102 years.  He was the last of a tribe who inhabited the Jersey shore when the Dutch took possession under the grant from the Colonial Governor Stuyvesant. The deceased had been brought up in the family of Mr. Van Voorst; he acted as a spy for the British army during the Revolution and did them great service as a guide in various parts of New Jersey.  He was enabled by the wealth acquired form this service, to decoy at various times colored persons from the neighboring farms on board the British West Indiamen, where he sold them as slaves. During the last 60 years he was much addicted to intemperance.  He has left no family.  N.Y. Eng.

Marriage

At Lockport [Niagara Co NY], on the 28th ult. by the Rev. Mr. Smith, Lewis Gibson, esq., merchant, of Augusta, Gorgia, to Miss Almira Brooks, stepdaughter of Lot Clark, esq., of Lockport.

Death

On the evening of Sunday, the 25th ult. John J. Ten Eick was found dead in a field near his house, in Davenport in this county [Delaware Co., NY].  Circumstances leave no doubt but the deceased came to his death by lightning.  The facts, as we have heard them, are briefly these:  Late in the afternoon of that day, Mr. Ten Eick took his bridle in his hand and went into the field for the purpose of bringing a horse from the pasture.  A heavy shower occurred during his absence, and he not returning, his friends went in pursuit and found him as above stated, lying on his face, under a tree evidently shattered by lightning a few minutes before. The electric fluid had passed down the tree through the hat of Mr. T. leaving a small hole in the corner of the hat, and down his body to the ground, tearing the sole of one of his shoes in its passage.  No external mark of violence was discoverable on his body. Mr. Ten Eick had been at different times supervisor of the town in which he resided and was highly respected and esteemed by his acquaintance.  His sudden death is a source of sincere regret to his fellow citizens.  Delaware Gazette

In the death of this amiable young lady, we are forcibly reminded of the uncertainty of life.  Scarcely six months have passed since she was led, by her now bereaved husband, to the hymenial altar, with an unclouded prospect before her, anticipating all the comfort and happiness that would naturally result from the nearest and dearest connexion on earth.  But she is now no more!  She sleeps the sleep of death!  That connexion is now severed--is dissolved forever!  We sincerely sympathize with the very extensive circle of relatives and particularly with the afflicted husband.  Their loss is irreparable.
