A Fly Creek correspondent of the Cooperstown Journal says that on the 12th inst., two boys of Mr. S. H. Chapin, aged 10 and 12 years, and a boy of Peter Edgett, were playing together, having been left at home alone.  The older Chapins boy, Charles, went into the house and got a shot gun that was loaded.  The Edgett boy, aged 8 years, took the gun and said he took off the cap, and then snapped the gun, when it exploded, the whole charge taking effect in the neck of Harvey Chapin, on the left side just below the angle of the lower jawbone, severing the carotid artery on that side and parting the trachea, causing instant death.

It will be remembered by many of our citizens, that Mr. Benj. B. Porter, long the efficient bookkeeper in the Maydole Hammer Factory [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], left this place some four years since with his family and took up his residence in the State of Delaware, remaining there something like a couple of years, He removed to Lawrance, Kansas, stopping at Aiken, South Carolina, a short time, hoping thereby to improve the health of his invalid wife.  In December last he buried his wife in Kansas, she having died a consumptive, leaving to his care three children, the eldest not yet ten and the youngest about one year old.  In April last, Mr. Porter, with his children, came East as far as Philadelphia, where he has since resided.  On Tuesday of last week, he returned to this place with his second child, Stella [Porter], aged about five years, to bury by the side of one he had lost while a resident of Norwich.  Not able to return at once from ill health, on Friday last a telegram brought the sad intelligence that Bennie [Porter], his youngest, aged about 2 years, and who was apparently well up to 24 hours before, was dead. The remains were forwarded by express on Saturday and are expected today (Tuesday) in time for the funeral.  Both the children died of diptheria.  Mr. Porter has the heartfelt sympathy of this community, and of his many friends in Chenango County in this his sad bereavement.

In German, on the 20th inst. Dazy Day [Cowan}, aged 6 years, child of B.F. Cowan. [Chenango American, Greene, NY, Oct. 27, 1870]

On Wednesday last, at about sundown our citizens were startled and horrified by the report that Daisy, the beautiful and charming little daughter of Mr. Frank Cowen, living in the southern part of this town [German, Chenango co. NY], was frightfully burned by her clothes taking fire from the stove.  She had been left in the kitchen while her parents were engaged at milking several rods distant from the house.  Screaming and with her clothes all on fire she rushed from the house and was met by her mother, who after being herself severely burned, succeeded by tearing off a portion of the girl's clothing in extinguishing the flames.  The next morning death came to the relief of the little sufferer.  She was [6] years of age.

Death of Almon H. Prime

The Franklin [Delaware Co. NY] Register of October 4th, contains the following notice of the death and burial of Croton, Delaware County, of Mr. Almon H. Prime, a former resident of Oxford [Chenango Co. NY]:

"On the evening of the last day of Fall's first and most beautiful month, another brother was called to the land [beyond the river, to the Celestial lodge above.' Almon H. Prime, a worthy brother of Delhi lodge has gone.  His remains were followed to the tomb on Sunday, October 2d, by his afflicted family and friends.  He was buried with true Masonic honors.  Representatives from fourteen lodges were present to pay the last tribute of respect to the brother who had gone to mingle their tears with those of his afflicted wife and children, and to speak the kindly word of consolation and hope to them.  The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.J. Hough.  Nearly 1,500 people were present, including 125 Masons.  It seems that much of the prejudice against the order which exists in this community, must have been softened or entirely eradicated by this exhibition of love amongst the brothers of the mystic tie. the procession first formed in front of the hotel and marched thence to the residence of the deceased.  When the services at the house had been performed, they reformed and marched to the place of interment, and there performed those solemn and impressive ceremonies which go to make a masonic funeral the most solemn and instructive in the world.  They then escorted the mourners back to their desolate home and there left them in the care of him who 'doeth all things well.' "

In the full exercise of those cardinal Christian virtues, "Faith, Hope and Charity," he has passed to his final reward.  Let the living emulate his virtues.

A man named Edwin Duffy was instantly killed by the cars on the U.C. & S.V. R.R., a short distance above the Midland junction, on Wednesday evening last.  He had started to walk to Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY] on the track, but fell asleep while under the influence of liquor, and was run over and killed by the evening train which arrives here at eight P.M.  Deceased has been in the employ of Elijah Upham, of Sherburne, and is said to have been an industrious, inoffensive man, but somewhat addicted to the use of intoxicating drinks.

Death at Lyon Brook Bridge

On Thursday afternoon of last week, a man fell from Lyon Brook bridge, at its highest point, and was instantly killed.  It appears from information that we have since obtained, that his name was John Lee, and his home as at Eaton, Madison County.  He came to Norwich to attend the Fair, but after imbibing pretty freely of whisky, took the Thursday afternoon train south, stopping at Lyon Brook with many others, who went down to see the famous bridge, but it appears that Lee remained.  A party of young men and girls got off the train from the south at the bridge, and Lee informed them that he was employed by the company to show the bridge to visitors and told them to follow him.  He said that it was necessary for the gentlemen to walk on one side of the bridge and the ladies on the other, while he walked the ties in the center, and in this order he marched the party to the highest point of the bridge. , immediately over the creek, where he ordered them to halt, informing them that they were at the highest point, and that he would now proceed to show them the most remarkable feat they had ever witnessed.  He then sat down on the ties, reached under and took hold of one of the iron rods, and let himself drop, no doubt thinking that he would be able to keep his grasp of the rod, but to the horror of the spectators, he fell to the bottom, a distance of one hundred and fifty-five feet mangling his body in a horrible manner, and killing him instantly.

Coroner Avery was immediately notified, and proceeded to hold an inquest, at which the above facts were elicited.  The body was not identified until Sunday, when Mr. Edwin Wilcox, of Eaton, happened in town on a short visit, and recognized it as that of John Lee, of Eaton.

The victim of this horrible tragedy was a single man, about thirty-years of age, and a painter by trade.  He has a married sister living at Eaton.  His frightful death is another fearful warning of the evils of intemperance, as there is not a doubt that he was intoxicated at the time.

Mr. Cary, undertaker, received a telegram from the friends of Lee on Tuesday morning, saying that they would come down and take charge of the body immediately.

Death of Merlin Jackson

JACKSON:  In Binghamton [Broome Co. NY], Sept. 26th, Merlin Jackson, Esq. aged 68 years, formerly of Afton [Chenango Co. NY].

Merlin Jackson, formerly of Afton, Chenango County, died at his residence, 21 Exchange Street, Binghamton, on the 26 ult. of Consumption.

Mr. Jackson was born in Butternuts [Otsego Co. NY], now Morris, June 6, 1802, and was a son of Uri and Charity (Moore) Jackson.  He began his business career as a teacher, and subsequently at 23 years of age he entered the store attached to the cotton factory in Butternuts, as clerk, but after a few years he began business on his own account

He was for many years a prosperous and successful merchant at Afton, but sold his business in 1855, after which time he lived in retirement.  In 1865 he sold his estate in Afton and came to this city [Binghamton].

His business career was uniformly marked by the strictest integrity and virtue, and many, very many, are the widowed and orphaned who will feel keenly the loss of a prudent counsellor and a tried and trusted friend and guardian.

He had by his great energy and determination delayed the issue of his disease for twelve years.  His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him in his former home, and he leaves in our midst a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.  Binghamton Daily Republican.

Death of Dr. Charles H. Ray

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, October 5, 1870

findagrave.com, memorial #190447108

The public of Chicago were shocked on the morning of the 24th ult. on learning of the death of Dr. Charles H. Ray, editor-in-chief of the Evening Post, of that city.

Dr. Ray was a native of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], born in [1821], and will be remembered by many of our older citizens as a young man of rare intellectual endowments.  Having received a good education, he removed to the west in 1843, where he adopted medicine as his profession.  He afterwards entered the political arena, and became editor of the Jeffersonian, a daily Democratic paper published in Galena, Ill.  Political changes induced him to dispose of his paper, during the Kansas-Nebraska excitement, and after a brief period, during a portion of which he satisfactorily discharged the duties of the office of Secretary of the Illinois Senate, he became editor and joint proprietor of the Chicago Tribune, in 1855, which position he held until the winter of 1862-3, when he retired from it, to pursue other vocations.  In some speculations subsequent to this, Dr. Ray was unfortunate, and much of his earnings of the past were swept away.  In the summer of 1865, he resumed his connection with the Tribune, which continued until late in the fall, when he became editor-in-chief of the Post

We copy from that paper, of the 24th, from which we have condensed the above brief notice, the following in relation to his decease:

"Dr. Ray was attacked with brain fever about the 20th of last January.  After many weeks of great suffering, he so far recovered that he was able to proceed to Cleveland, where he received scientific treatment for some weeks.  He then proceeded to Massachusetts, where he remained for several weeks, returning about midsummer to Chicago.  Since, he has written a few articles for The Post, some of which were as good as any he ever wrote, but it was evident to his nearest friends that he had not completely recovered.  On Tuesday, the old malady returned upon him, and rapidly increasing in violence resulted in death, this morning, at a quarter past one o'clock."

Deceased was married in early life to Miss Jennie Yates Per Lee, of North Norwich, who died in 1862, leaving a daughter and three sons, who are now living. A few years since, he married Miss Julia Clark, of Iowa, who, with two daughters, survive him.

A frightful accident occurred on the DeRuyter Branch of the Midland, on Saturday morning last, resulting in the death of John Donnelly, a laborer employed in fencing the road.  Donnelly, with others, started from this place early Saturday morning, on a hand car, which they attached by a rope to the engine of the construction train, which was being backed up, one end of the rope being held by Donnelly, who was cautioned by his companions that he was in danger of being jerked off, but who it appears disregarded their warnings.  When about three miles from the village, a sudden lurch of the engine on a portion of the road not yet leveled, threw Donnelly off his balance, and precipitated him onto the track, in front of the hand car, which ran over him. His companions picked him up insensible, placed him upon the hand car and brought him back to the village, where an examination of Dr. Avery showed that his head and face were horribly cut, and his left leg nearly severed at the ancle joint.  He lived but a few minutes after being brought to the village.  He is said to have been a steady and industrious man, about thirty years of age, and single.  He had two brothers employed in the same party, who were with him at the time of the accident,

Death of Hon. Orville W. Childs

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, September 14, 1870

Editor Chenango Union:  You have read in the editorial of the Argus of Friday last, a just tribute to the memory of the late Orville W. Childs.  that truthful article will find a ready response from many who remember him as the faithful, intelligent and courteous engineer, resident at Oxford [Chenango Co. NY], during the Constuction of the Chenango Canal.  he was a man of the highest integrity, and scrupulously honest and honorable in all the walks and duties of his most useful life.  He commanded in an eminent degree the respect and confidence of John Tracy, John F. Hubbard, Robbert Menell, Smith M. Purdy and Obadiah German, the early friends of public improvement in Chenango, of whom the venerable ex-Senator Hubbard alone is the survivor.  As such examples of the good are too precious not to be held up for contemplation and study, will you please publish in the Union that tribute to an honored memory.  I had the happiness to know him.  Sincerely yours, Henry R. Mygatt

The Argus speaks of the death of this eminent man as follows:

"It is announced that Hon. Orville W. Childs died at his residence, in Philadelphia, on Tuesday last.  His health had been poor for some time, but his case had only been considered alarming for a few weeks.  Mr. Childs was one of the foremost practical civil engineers in the country.  He was early in the employ of the State of New York, and our magnificent public works attest his genius and his skill.  He had charge of a large amount of work during the construction of the Champlain Canal and was engaged permanently upon the construction of the enlargement of the Erie Canal, from the commencement to nearly the close of that work, except during a few intervening years, when he was engaged in another gigantic enterprise - the survey of a ship canal across the Isthmus of Nicaragua.

He was the companion and adviser and trusted friend of William C. Bouck, Henry Seymour, Jones Earll, jr. Michael Hoffman, Stephen Van Rensselaer and their contemporaries, and was the chief Engineer of our State works from 1840 to 1847.  In 1848 he was the Democratic candidate for State Engineer but was defeated with the rest of the ticket.  He shared with John B. Jervis and William J. McAlpine the plans upon which the enlarged Erie canal was based.  His later companions in the engineering profession now holding public positions are Van. R. Richmond, State Engineer; S.H. sweet, Deputy State Engineer, and John D. Fay, Canal commissioner.

We cannot hope to do justice to his virtues and his abilities in these hasty paragraphs.  His name was synonymous with integrity, unflagging industry and high moral worth.  He felt a great pride in the engineering profession and sought by every means in his power to elevate its standard to the highest pitch.  The labors of his pen will be found scattered through the public documents and in the statute books during the past forty years.  Always careful, considerate and exact to the minutest point, these habits of thought and action made him a safe counsellor and guide.  In all these qualities, he left a noble example for the profession to follow."

60th Wedding Anniversary of Capt. & Mrs. William Newton

An event of rare occurrence transpired on Monday evening last, at the residence of Capt. William Newton, where a large number, including his family friends and many of our citizens assembled on invitation, to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the wedding day of the venerable host and hostess.  All their living children, nine in number were present, with the exception of Dr. Homer Newton, who is now traveling abroad; all the grandchildren, numbering nineteen; three brothers, Henry Newton of Poolville, Harvey and Daniel of Sherburne; and two sisters: Mrs. David C. Buell and Mrs. Charles Lathrop.

Capt. Newton, who is now in the 84th year of his age, was born in Colchester, Conn.  He removed from thence to Hamilton, Madison County, at 20 years of age and purchased a farm, on which his father died in 1837.  In early life he was a fuller by trade, at which he subsequently worked near New Berlin and afterwards in Camden, in Oneida County.  While residing there he married Miss Louis Butler at East Hamilton, daughter of Deacon Richard Butler, who came to Madison County 75 years ago at four years old.  Two years after their marriage, in 1812, the young couple came to Sherburne.  Capt. Newton bought a strip of land near where he now lives and erected a fulling mill, in which he wrought at his trade most of the time for 13 years, during which time he was twice burned out, and built the third mill.

The homestead in which he now resides was built in 1822.  For a term of 48 years, it has been occupied by a family at no time numbering less than twelve; and in all that time, out of the number, only two deaths have occurred.  Maria Newton, a daughter, married Rev. Charles Little, and went with him to India as a missionary; she was taken sick the day after her arrival and died a few days thereafter.  Mrs. Lucius Newton, died about two years since.

The Diamond couple have good reason to be thankful for the blessings Providence has bestowed upon them.  Aside from the vicissitudes of their earlier history, their labors have been crowned with abundant prosperity, and they have reared a family of children of which any parents might feel justly proud.  All are in prosperous circumstances, and some have distinguished themselves in their various walks in life.  Besides the daughters already mentioned there are sons living as follows:  Butler, who is a prosperous farmer at Parma Centre, Munroe County, Warren, Cashier of the Bank of Chenango at Norwich, Isaac, a successful lawyer in Norwich, Lucius, who resides on the homestead with his parents and superintends the extensive farming operations, Hubert, a professor in Yale College, well known in the scientific world, Albro, lumber dealer, etc., in Brooklyn, and Dr. Homer, whose residence is in Brooklyn, but who is now on a wedding tour in Europe.

The gathering on Monday evening was an exceedingly pleasant one.  The spacious lawn in front of the family mansion was an exceedingly pleasant one.  The spacious lawn in front of the family mansion was brilliantly illuminated with Chinese lanterns hanging form the branches of the trees.  The refreshments were of the most lavish description.  In short, this memorable reunion was complete in all its arrangements and will be pleasantly remembered by all who had the good fortune to be present.  Sherburne News, 25th

Farewell, Lillie, thou art gone / To a land of life and light, / And our hearts are sad and lone, / Though the day is long and bright.

Long we watched, and hoped, and waited, / Watched thy feeble, flickering breath, / But our prayers were unavailing, / Now we see thee cold in death.

Gentle Lillie! patient sufferer, / Meekly bearing all thy pain, / Suffering on in silent anguish, / No relief until death came.

Ah! we tried so hard to save thee / From Death's old and chilling hand: / But we know that thou art singing / In that bright angelic land.

High above in heaven's portal, / Robed in pure and spotless white, / There's our Lillie, crowned immortal, / In those realms of pure delight.

O'er thy little grave we'll scatter / Sweetest flowers in fragrant bloom, / Emblem of immortal glory / In the land beyond the tomb.

Farewell, Lillie, sweetly slumber / In the lap of mother earth, / While with angel's bright rejoicing / In thy new and glorious birth.

Tragedy in Binghamton

Chenango American, Greene, NY, August. 28, 1870

Binghamton [Broome Co. NY], was the scene of a terrible tragedy on Wednesday morning of last week. The following particulars we glean from the Binghamton papers.  At half-past two o'clock three burglars entered the dry goods store of D.M.&E.G. Halbert, murdered one of the clerks, Frederick A. Merrick, and escaped.  Gilbert S. Burrows, the clerk who slept in the store with Mr. Merrick, gives the following account of the tragedy:

The two clerks were awakened, and looking around they saw three men in masks, standing near and approaching their bed.  They both jumped out at the same time, and as Mr. Burrows struck the floor, he received a blow upon his head with a box chisel or "jimmy," which staggered him back two paces.  Mr. Merrick had one of Smith & Weston's revolvers, with which he endeavored to shoot, but he could not discharge it.  Burrows then seized the burglar with the "jimmy," grasped his weapon and threw him down behind a pile of goods which were piled upon the floor. The other two burglars frightened by the pistol, rushed downstairs, and the clerks as they remarked, endeavored to make "quick work" of the one who had fallen into their hands. Burrows struck him several times upon his head with the "jimmy" he had wrested from him, when the burglar cried for help, and the two who had run downstairs, rushed back to save him. The clerks then left the burglar whom they had down and stepped to the head of the stairs to meet those who were coming back.  Burrows threw the "jimmy" which he held in his hand, and supposes he hit one of the burglars with it and stopped him.  Two or three stool tops were also thrown downstairs at the burglars, but without much effect. The burglar who was hit with the "jimmy" drew a revolver and fired at Burrows, the ball striking the edge of the banister and lodging in the wall overhead.  Splinters from the banister flew in Burrows' face, and he stepped back, remarking that he was shot.  The other burglar rushed upstairs and clinched Merrick, and as soon as Burrows stepped back, the one who had fired at him also rushed upstairs and ran to the place where Merrick and his confederate were tussling.  When he came up, the other, who had hold of Merrick said "Be careful, Pat; don't shoot me!"  That was repeated twice. By that time Barrows had stepped around in rear of the banister and could see one of the burglars hold Merrick's head over the counter, while the other placed a pistol to the back of his head and fired.  The two burglars then ran down the back stairs, and Mr. Burrows went out into the street to give the alarm, without waiting to see what became of the wounded burglar.

The three then fled, and in the bright moonlight two or three persons, supposed to be the burglars, were seen to go toward the Chenango River.

The scoundrels carried nothing, or next to nothing, from the store. A package of silks, valued at from ten to fifteen hundred dollars, was found ready to be taken away.

The burglars wore masks, that in the struggle they lost, and these are now, with the tools, etc. in the store.  The alarm was given, the fire bell was rung and in a quarter of an hour, a hundred men or more were at the store.  Such a time of excitement has rarely if ever been known in Binghamton.  If the murderers had been caught, they would have been torn to pieces by the infuriated citizens.

Merrick lived a short time after he was shot but was unconscious. His home was in Walton, New York, and his age was 18 years.

Entrance to the store was effected by boring holes in the panels of the basement door in the rear of the store, sufficiently large to enable a man to put his hand through and remove the bolts.

Friday morning the body of a man was found in the water just above the bridge, and it proved to be the lifeless body of one of the persons engaged in the murder. Search was continued in the river, and not a great while elapsed before another of the bodies was bro't out.  The last one had on the mask which he wore on the night of the murder. The first man found had a string around his neck, which held the mask on his face.  The faces and heads of the men were terribly hacked and show that the fight in the store was a desperate one.  After the robbers left the store, they must have attempted to ford the river and exhaustion from loss of blood, and the excitement was too much for them, and they were drowned before they could reach the opposite side of the river.  The bodies are very much changed, and it will be difficult to identify them.

The discovery of the bodies created the greatest excitement.  On the bodies of the burglars were found bits, chloroform and other burglarious instruments, besides letters, of which the police keep close control, in order to prevent anything being made public which may lead to the discovery of the other party implicated.

Many of the citizens have identified the dead bodies of the burglars, as persons they have before seen in town.

A man has been arrested and lodged in jail, who is believed to be the third person engaged in this tragedy.  He refuses to answer any questions or give any account of himself.  Whether he can be connected with the affair is yet in doubt.

Is it Thy will; My Father say -must this pet lamb be given? Oh thou hast many such, dear Lord, in Heaven; / And a soft voice said -"nobly hast thou striven,/ But peace - be still"

I laid him down, In those white, shrouded arms with bitter tears; / for some voice told me that in after years / He should know naught of passion, grief, or fear / As I had known

No tears, no fears! / Will there a day come that I shall not weep? / For I bedew my pillow in my sleep, / Yes-yes, thank God! no grief that clime shall keep / No weary tears."

Death of Judge H.S. Griswold

The Binghamton Democrat of Thursday August 11th, make the announcement of the death of Hon. Horace S. Griswold, which occurred at his residence on Tuesday afternoon, the 9th inst.  for a long time, Judge Griswold has been out of health and his demise anticipated, but notwithstanding, the information of the sad event will cause many of our readers who enjoyed his friendship and acquaintance pangs of sorrow and regret.  In saying that no man in our community enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens to a greater degree than did Mr. Griswold, we but reiterate the opinion of all, for he was a man to whom all looked as the embodiment of truth and honesty, devoted to duty, strict and firm in his dealing with all men in the discharge of his official duties, whose loss, alike public or private, will not be made up to our community in many a day, for he was an honest man.

Death of Cyrus Tuttle

Oxford Times, Oxford, NY, August 17, 1870

At a meeting of Rector, Wardens and Vestrymen of St. Paul's (Episcopal) Church of Oxford [Chenango Co. NY], held at the Rectory on the 12th day of August 1870, the following minutes were unanimously adopted, and directed to be entered on the record of the Parish, and published in the Gospel Messenger and Oxford Times:

Cyrus Tuttle, one of the oldest citizens of the town, died at Oxford, Chenango County, on the 20th day of July 1870.  Mr. Tuttle was born in Connecticut and emigrated to Oxford, in those days in the far west, about fifty-six years since.  Bringing with him those thrifty and economical habits then characteristic of the place of his birth, he entered upon the realities of life, and through the whole of his long career he preserved and persevered in those habits.  By dint of his own unaided exertions and strict adherence to his early training he amassed and saved a respectable fortune.  While doing this, and during his whole life he maintained the reputation and character of a strictly honest man.

Mr. Tuttle at an early day became a communicant of the Church and was ever its zealous friend.  He was for many years a vestryman, subsequently a warden of St. Paul's Church, and for quite a number of years previous to his death was the Treasurer of the Parish.  In all these important trusts he was ever faithful, and in all the varied relations of life he maintained a consistent Christian course and character.

By his will he gave $1,000 to the Van Wageman Missionary fund for the County of Chenango.  To Bishop Tuttle $500 for missionary purposes; to foreign missions, $300; $300 in Nashotah and to Faribault $300 - bequests liberal according to life means.

Mr. Tuttle was a useful man in our Parish, and we take a melancholy pleasure in thus placing upon record our appreciation of his virtues and character.

Walter Ayrault, Rector; John R. Clarke, Clerk, Pro Tem.
