Deaths

In Stamford [Delaware Co. NY] on the 31st ult. Mrs. Margarette Burroughs, aged 48 years, consort of Mr. Daniel Burroughs, and on the 1st inst. Ellen Burroughs aged 19 years, daughter of Mr. Daniel Burroughs.  Thus, within 24 hours, was Mr. Burroughs bereaved of a beloved wife and a dutiful and affectionate child, and society of two shining ornaments, but with the heart-cheering consolation that what is our lot is their gain, as they both gave undoubted evidence that they have an interest in Christ and an inheritance beyond this vale of tears. The large concourse of friends and the deep solemnity which pervaded every mind whilst an affecting address was delivered by Mr. Dennison, manifested that they were beloved by all who knew them, and as they were both interred in one grave, it seemed to speak loud to all, unto you, O man, I call and my voice is unto the children of men.

In Olean, Cattaraugus County [NY] on the 4th ult., of consumption, Mr. Thomas Edgerton formerly of Franklin in this county [Delaware Co. NY] aged abiyt 42 tears,

In Bovina [Delaware Co. NY], on the 15th, inst., Mrs. McFarland a native of Ireland, aged one hundred and ten years.

From the Wayne (Pa.) Enquirer:  With feelings of unfeigned regret, we record the decease of our estimable fellow citizen, Solomon Moore, Esquire. After enduring with characteristic firmness, the pangs of an afflicting illness for nearly two months, yesterday afternoon, in the 49th year of his age, he ceased to breathe, calmly and tranquilly yielding his spirit to the disposal of his maker. Few men have passed through life, leaving a reputation less sullied by human frailties than Solomon Moore.  In his respective official stations, he uniformly evinced a correctness of attention to the interests under his charge, rarely to be found.  His acts, open to public scrutiny, present his proudest testimonial of his worth and integrity.  In private life, his character as a kind and affectionate husband and father - as a valuable friends and neighbor - are too well known and appreciated to require the aid of eulogy. The number of his friends was circumscribed by his acquaintance - his enemy did not exist. Deeply as his loss may be felt in his official relations to his fellow citizens, it is diminutive compared with the bereavement sustained in the circle of his endearing private attachments. There it is irreparable, but whilst we condole with his relatives and friends, we cannot but think it a heart-cheering reflection that with universal accord, the expressive words, "an honest man is the noblest work of God" may be truly applied to expires the general sentiment of honor and respect for the memory of Solomon Moore.

To many it will be interesting to know that in his illness he manifested an unreserved acquiescence and submission to the will of heaven and that he enjoyed the high consolations which the religion of the Bible significantly affords.

News Item

Mr. H.L. Miller has left at our office a copy of the Oxford Gazette published in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY] sixty-five years ago.  It is a small sheet four columns to the page and bears date Saturday, Sept. 24, 1814, being Vol. 1, No. 43.  On the first page is an original poem "On Seeing a Flake of Snow Descend and Fall Into a Lady's Bosom"; proclamations from President Madison and Governor D.D. Tompkins, in relation to the invasion of Washington by the British troops; and an advertisement offering $130 reward for Isaac Miner and Daniel Collins, deserters from the 29th Reg't of infantry, the former "by profession a farmer, but by practice a villain, last place of residence Lisle, Broome County." [NY]

The paper contains no local news, but is filled with extracts from other papers and letters giving accounts of Com. McDonough's naval victory, engagements with the British at Fort Erie, Plattsburgh, etc. The news in those days traveled slow, and was then from ten to fifteen days old.  But the editor was enterprising for he states that he issued "a hand bill" Sunday containing "particulars of the repulse of the British Army."

The marriage notice of S.G. Throop, Esq. appears in the paper, as also does a call for a meeting of the Chenango County Medical Society at Gregory's hotel in Norwich, Oct. 2d, Geo. Mowry, Sec'y.  Henry Mygatt has an advertisement as does Price & Clapp and there are several legal notices and sales by Isaac Foot, Sheriff.  The paper is in a remarkable state of preservation and Mr. Miller means to take further good care of it, as should be done.

Bainbridge Republican, Bainbridge, NY, March 6, 1879

Marriage

We are in receipt of an invitation to attend the marriage ceremony of Arthur H. Bunnell formerly Editor of this paper, to Miss Mary P. Hathaway of Tioga, Pa., on Tuesday evening March 11, 1879.

Death

LYON:  In Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] March 3d, 1879, Charles Lyon aged 94 years.

The subject of the above sketch was born in Bedford, Westchester County, N.Y., August 10, 1784, and removed to this town [Bainbridge] in 1805 and was consequently one of our oldest settlers. His farm is located in West Bainbridge and from the time he purchased or moved on to it, seventy-three years ago, he has enjoyed the best of health and was hale and hearty, chopped his own wood and built his own fires up to within three or four days of his death.  He had a family of twelve children and what is quite remarkable he could look down upon the fifth generation of his offspring.

News Item

Captain Milton Johnston

Captain Milton Johnston son of Colonel Witter and Jane Johnston and brother of Mrs. John Baxter, was born at Sidney Plains [Delaware Co. NY] Sept. 17, 1800, and is the oldest manor born citizen in this place.  He followed the occupation of his father, who was a farmer and lumberman, until the year of 1825 when he commenced teaching school and in which business he continued for nearly five years.  In 1827 he was elected ensign with a commission from De Witt Clinton, then Governor of the State.  In 1830 he was elected captain of a Militia Company which office he held for nearly five years.  In February 1832 he was married to Miss Delia Hull daughter of Lawrence Hull, esq of Bridgewater [Oneida Co. NY], one of the wealthy and prominent citizens of that place.  In the year of 1835, he went to hotel keeping in the house now known as Dr. Hodgins residence, where he remained till May 1838, when he again returned to farming.

In 1841 and under General Harrison's administration, he was appointed postmaster for Sidney Plains, and at that time the principle mail route was along the valley of the Susquehanna from Binghamton to Albany, and during the great ice freshet of February 1848, the bridges at Sidney Plains and Bainbridge were carried away, and the stages from necessity ran upon the opposite side of the river.  The Captain, true to his motto "go ahead, and if you are wrong get righted," immediately transferred the post office (against the protestations of friends and enemies) for the convenience of the mail carriers, to a private residence in the town of Unadilla, Otsego Co. [NY] and then wrote to the Postmaster General, for instructions relative to what he had done, and it was at a critical period in political affairs.  He had received his appointment from Postmaster General Gideon Granger of N.Y. of President Harrison's Cabinet, but Harrison dying he was succeeded by Taylor who made a general change in the plans of the administration by forming a new cabinet and favoring the Democratic party, and those who were holding offices under Harrison's appointments were being hurriedly removed, and the inhabitants of Sidney Plains, irrespective of their political proclivities, joined in one general denunciation of so flagrant a use of an unauthorized power on part of the Captain. But he was not only sustained by President Taylor's administration but continued to hold the office for two years under President Polk.  When feeling that they were unable of obtain his removal and that he had really "beat," he tendered his resignation, and it only illustrates one of the leading  characteristic principles of the Captain's independence of seeing how the rest of the world is going and then doing "just as he is a mind to," (excepting in politics, where he is always to be found, true to party interests).

He has voted at every presidential election since 1828 and still feels a large interest in political affairs, making them a constant study and his memory of facts and dates relative to the general issue is truly remarkable.  In 1860 he was elected supervisor of the town and discharged the duties of that office with much honor to himself and to the party by whom he was elected.  In the winter of 1824, he joined the Masonic Lodge in Unadilla and for many years was an active member, but of late he has paid but little attention to the working of the "craft."  In the year of 1832, he united with the Congregational Church in this place and became an influential member and at a later day was a prominent and a devoted sabbath school superintendent and held a warm and affectionate place in the hearts of both teachers and scholars.

He had a family of 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters.  Five of whom are now living.  One daughter, an amiable young lady having died, June 1865.  Mr. Johnston now resides on a portion of what formerly constituted his father's land grant about one-mile west of the business part of the village.  His residence is a white cottage standing on the brow of the hill or table land overlooking the Plains, honored and respected by the community for his good morals, love of friendship, and his neighborly kindness.  In person he stands about 5 feet 10 inches high with an erect body, but an inclining head covered with the whitened locks of age.  He usually carries a heavy cane with a bent handle, silver mounted, and a present from a kind friend.  His features are round and ruddy while his blue eyes sparkle with fun and merriment, and he seldom misses the opportunity of telling a good story, (even if at his own expense) as the following may illustrate:

In 1830 they formed their first temperance society in Sidney Plains, and Captain Johnston became a member, but it was the custom in those times for the Captain of a military company "to stand treat on training days" and as the time drew nearer for the "annual muster" the Captain saw a dilemma and waited upon the president of the society, Rev. John B. Fish, requested that his signature might be removed from the temperance roll, but the president objected and urged him to do the best he could to promote the temperance cause.  A happy thought occurred to the Captain.  The society admitted the use of "cider and small drink."  So on training day, when the Captain, called out his company, he told them of his recent interest in the cause of temperance and made what he believed to be a stirring appeal in behalf of the society and closed by stating, that though a temperance man, he did not wish them to think that it was his intention to wholly shrink from an old established custom.  But if they desired it, he was willing to furnish a little wine on the occasion and would like an expression from the company by a vote, which was readily given in favor of the captain's proposition, who feeling much elated at the growing signs of temperance, thanked them for their kind appreciation of his efforts. But when night came and he settled his bill, he found they had drunk 5 gallons of wine and had strong symptoms of something besides temperance principals, and he has never attempted to lecture upon that subject since.

Death

On Tuesday morning, Dec. 18 at Granville, New Jersey, Laura [Evans] wife of George H. Evans, aged 38.

When most of the matter for this paper was in type, all our household were called to the mournful duties rendered necessary by the melancholy and unexpected event above announced. She had not for a long time enjoyed good health, but such a sudden and fatal termination of her sickness was quite unexpected.  She submitted without murmuring to many privations for the sake of the cause in which I have felt it my duty to be engaged for more than twenty years.  Words are unnecessary to elicit the sympathy of friends for the loss of such a partner for so long a distance in the journey of life.  The decaying foliage of the homestead burying ground, in which she now lies, is emblematic of the sorrow caused in our family circle by this bereavement. The new leaves and flowers of spring will call to fresh duties and bespeak the inutility of useless regrets,  Young America, Dec. 22.

A Tin Wedding

One of the most agreeable and interesting social gatherings it has been my privilege to attend in a long time was held at the home of Demott E. Pope, in Columbus [Chenango Co. NY], on the evening of the 24th ult., in the order of a surprise party, it being the tenth anniversary of married life of Mr. and Mrs. Pope, she being the daughter of E.S. Dart, Esq. of this town. Early in the evening the relatives and friends commenced to gather until some forty pleasant and familiar countenances met with mutual greetings.  After the party had all arrived, there was reading of the scriptures and prayer offered to the Supreme ruler of the universe for his blessing upon the especial parties of the occasion and the friends in general, by S. Hoxey, from Whitetown, Oneida County, N.Y.  Soon after, refreshments were announced and a feast of such things as those ladies know how to prepare - enough to water the mouth of any epicure.

Suffice it to say ample justice was done to the partaken, if not to the partakers.  When the free and friendly interchange of thought and views was enough to cause one to forget the flight of time until the last hour of the day, and the party prepared to take their leave, each feeling their social natures improved and resolving in their own mind that such occasions should be more frequent in the future. The presents were both ornamental and useful and will be kept in grateful remembrance of both the givers and the occasion.

Lobdell and Mrs. M.D. Raymond, who survive her and Lewis Purdy, deceased. To the children of Mr. R. to whom she became a stepmother, she became especially endeared by the affectionate interest she took in their welfare, and they mourn her loss as a mother indeed. Thus passed from time to eternity another victim of this cruel war.  He was among the first to enlist in the cause of his country and the last year of his time was well advanced when he hoped again to join friends at home, having never had a furlough since he enlisted.  But He who rules the destinies of the world had otherwise ordered it. He had been in numerous battles and had once been shipwrecked, but the strong hand of disease has laid him low.  He died a faithful soldier and a Christian and we trust his soul now sleeps with Jesus.

CADY:  A terrible tragedy occurred on Muller Hill in the town of Georgetown [Madison Co. NY] on Saturday last.  A boy, about 10 years of age, son of a Mr. Van Horn, went into the house of Ira Cady, one of his neighbors, and taking down a gun presented it at a little daughter of Mr. Cady, about 9 years old, called her by name, and said he was going to kill her.  He fired the gun, and the charge entered just between and above her eyebrows, producing death in a very short item. We have been unable to learn from the neighbors of any ill feeling of the boy towards his victim or her family and we think the shooting must have been gross carelessness, the boy not knowing the gun was loaded.

Death

In this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] on Tuesday, at 11 o'clock P.M., Mr. Robert Eldredge aged 24 years.

The deceased has been for several years engaged in active business in Binghamton, and with the extensive circle of his acquaintances has always been distinguished for the strictest integrity and the purest moral conduct.  Warm in his affections for friends and devoted in his attachment to his family, his death has caused a wound in their hearts which time cannot heal and left a vacant place in the social circle and by the fireside of his home, which no other one can fill.

His painful sickness of two weeks duration was borne with patience and fortitude, and a short time before death he expressed his perfect willingness to give back his soul into the hands of his Maker.

His family have the sympathies of the whole public; consolation they scarcely need, for we can but trust that the spirit of one so kind and good has found rest in Heaven.

Binghamton's Early History

Broome Republican, Binghamton, NY, April 11, 1849

In tracing the early history of our village, we shall in the outset acknowledge our indebtedness to the author of the "Annals of Binghamton," whose industry and research in snatching from the fangs of oblivion the fading glories and lingering memorials of its origin are too well known and appreciated to require our feeble tribute.  His fame is embalmed imperishably in his motto "Opus gratum posteritati!"

The point, at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers on which Binghamton is situated might well have attracted the attention of its pilgrim founders.  It is a romantic spot.  It is the walled village of the plain - but its walls are gently sloping mountains, through which the rivers have cut their winding way and on whose sides and summits the hand of cultivation now vies with the pencil of nature to spread a carpet of vegetation richer and more beautiful than the costliest of Oriental looms.

The soil is fertile and supposed to be alluvial.  The names of the rivers belong to the sonorous language of the Indians.  Susquehanna signifying long and crooked and Chenango, pleasant river.

The Chenango rises in Madison County [NY], has a uniform descent of five or six feet to the mile, without any rapids, flows nearly south, and is between 80 and 90 miles long.

The Susquehanna rises in Otsego Lake and pursues a meandering course into the Chesapeake Bay.  It is scarcely necessary to say that it is a large and prominent river.

Binghamton has the advantage of being at a considerable distance from any other village, whose natural location gives it any rival importance.

It is about 150 miles southwest of Albany - 90 miles south of Utica, 22 miles east of Owego and within 7 miles of the Pennsylvania line.  It is the county seat of Broome County [NY], which was set off from Tioga County in 1806 and called Broome, after John Broome, who was at that time a merchant of the city of New York and Lieutenant Governor of the State.

The original name of the village was Chenango Point - appropriately suggested by its location.  Its present name of Binghamton was given to it many years ago, by Gen. Joshua Whitney, one of its early settlers now deceased, in compliment to William Bingham of Philadelphia, who was the proprietor of a large patent of land lying on both sides of the Susquehanna and on which the village is built.  Mr. Bingham had made some liberal donations opt the villager, and General Whitney was his agent.  In sacrificing the Indian name, (though Chenango is still retained for the town), much beauty was lost and annoyance occasioned in the constant interpolation by strangers of the letter p.

Our distant friends will discover, we hope, in this etiology, their error, and avoid it for the future.

The first white man who made a permanent settlement in the village, was Captain Joseph Leonard in 1787.  He moved from the valley of the Wyoming - his wife and two children, following the windings of the Susquehanna in a canoe rowed by a hired man, and he keeping the shore with his horses.  The information which led to his removal to this place was derived from an Indian Trader by the name of Amos Draper.  The "poor Indian" then smoked his calumet in his quiet wigwam on the shore - and hunted the bounding deer with his unerring rifle on the mountains.  But his day of trails had come. The "white Man' had invaded his solitude.

NY], graduated from Union College and read law with John VanBuren, in Albany.  During the latter's term of Attorney General, Mr. Robinson was his deputy.  From 1848 to 1858, the deceased was a law partner of Mr. VanBuren in New York. Afterward he was associated with Mr. Scribner, a native of Middleburgh.  In 1870, Mr. Robinson was elected judge of the Superior Court in New York for a term of 14 years.  Judge Daly of the Common Pleas is a son-in-law of the late Judge Robinson.  For several summers past these gentlemen have lived in Worcester and often brought with them many lawyers and judges of distinction. The remains of Judge Robinson reached Worcester yesterday.  He was 64 years of age.  Mrs. Robinson was thrown from a carriage at Worcester in 1867 and killed.

Mr. R. was one of the earliest settlers in Norwich.  This section of the country was a wilderness when he took up his abode in it.  He lived to witness and aid much in making the vast improvements which now everywhere surround us.  He was industrious and frugal and upright in all his dealings.  In the early history of the county, he was elected to the Assembly and honestly and faithfully discharged the duties of the office.  He once kept the post office of this town at his residence one mile north of this village.  He left not an enemy but died at peace with all men - at peace with his Maker - an honest man and a Christian.

At Landsdown, New Jersey, April 22d, after a painful and protracted illness, borne with unfaltering resignation to the Divine will, Helen Stewart Bowers Hoyt, eldest daughter of Sarah C. and the late Captain Moses Hoyt.

Those who knew the deceased will remember her as the kind, gentle, benevolent and self-sacrificing friend ever ministering to the welfare of others, though quite oblivious of her own.  The Presbyterian Church, of which she had been a member many years, will mourn the loss of one of its most valued ornaments, but Heaven will gain a new treasure.

Death

The unpleasant office devolves upon us, says the N.Y. Commercial, of announcing the death of the venerable and estimable Dr. John R.B. Rogers of this city [NYC].  Dr. R. was one of the few patriots of the revolutionary stock who yet lingered amongst us.  He was a surgeon in the Pennsylvania line of the Revolutionary army, and after the close of the contest, he settled in Philadelphia, where he practiced his profession for several years.  From thence he removed to this city, where he has resided ever since.  He was a son of the Rev. Dr. Rogers, formerly for a long period pastor of the Water St. church and also of the Brick church in Beekman St. then included in the same ecclesiastical charge. The deceased was long eminent in his profession, and was for many years health officer of the port.  Since his retirement from that office, about 20 years ago, he has attended but little to his profession.  He was a man of great purity of life and clearness of intellect and a more patriotic heart never throbbed in the bosom of humanity.  His mind wandered not a moment until the last hour and his exit was characterized by that tranquility and peace of mind which marks the close of a life well spent in the discharge of all the duties of a good citizen and a devout Christian.

Cherry Valley Gazette, Cherry Valley, NY, February 26, 1833

Death

At Jamestown, Chautauqua Co. [NY] on the 16th instant, Nathaniel Hawks, Esq. Attorney at Law, formerly a resident of this village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co NY], and son of James Hawks, Esq of Richfield [Otsego Co. NY], aged about 25 years.

The news of the sudden death of this young man has cast a gloom over the countenances of the extended circle of his friends here and again teaches them the admonitory lesson that neither youth or health nor strength of constitution can ward off the shaft of the destroyer.

The deceased had just established himself in business under favorable auspices and his sudden removal is a source of poignant regret and grief to his numerous relatives and friends.  He had many ardent friends; no enemies; the universal regret expressed by all on hearing of his death is his best eulogy.

News Item

The exciting topic of conversation here is the result of the coroner's jury at Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] in the case of Miss Elizabeth Belden whose death was caused by abortion, at Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY], under the treatment of Dr. Meacham of that place, who, it was charged, was in the employ of Mr. C.F. Horton, one of our respectable citizens, a prominent member of the Baptist church and the Superintendent of its Sunday school, at whose house Miss Belden had been staying during the past winter.  Dr. Meacham having left the country, Mr. H. is held in the sum of $5,000 to await the action of the Grand jury of Chenango County.  Reports of the investigation by the coroner are found in the Chenango Union and Telegraph.

____________________

The village of Guilford, Chenango County, is just now somewhat excited over the death of Miss Elizabeth Belden.  She died in Bainbridge on Friday, April 25th, and as her residence was Guilford, she was taken to that place for burial.  But the facts of the case looked so suspicious that the Coroner, Mr. Spencer, concluded that an inquest should be held.  He took charge of the body, summoned a jury, and proceeded to investigate the matter.  An autopsy of the body was made by Dr. Avery of Norwich which plainly showed that the woman was a victim of an abortion which caused her death.

The Oxford Times says:  The Coroner is determined to make a thorough investigation and, in all probability, the guilty parties will be apprehended and brought to justice.  There are many rumors afloat and names coupled with this terrible crime which might be given, but we are in duty bound to withhold them until after the conclusion of the inquest.  The deceased was aged 34 years and has two sisters and a brother living in Guilford.

Norwich, April 30:  The jury at Guilford, in the case of Elizabeth Belden, concluded its labors today. The greater portion of the evidence is kept secret by the officials, but it is understood that in her dying statement the woman implicated Dr. I.D. Meacham of Bainbridge and Chas. F. Horton, a young farmer of Butternuts, Otsego County [NY].  the jury returned a verdict that Miss Belden's death was caused by Dr. Meacham and C.F. Horton. These parties are held to appear before the Grand Jury.
