Murder at Guilford

A terrible murder was perpetuated at Guilford, Chenango County [NY] on Sunday morning Dec. 27th.  The facts are as follows.  Mrs. Sarah F. Fitch, for a long time a resident of the town of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], formerly resided at Guilford.  John P. Hall is the husband of Mrs. Fitch's niece and resides at Guilford in the homestead formerly occupied by Mrs. Fitch or her husband.  On Thursday last Mrs. Fitch accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Prince, went to Guilford to spend Christmas with the family of her niece and nephew.

Sunday morning between 10 and 11 o'clock, Hall entered the sitting room where Mrs. Fitch sat reading near the stove.  He carried an ax in his hands and going to the stove he proceeded to heat it for the purpose of "taking the frost out of it," as he said.  While thus engaged, his wife left the room.  A noise was soon heard by those without and some members of the family, re-entering the room, found Mrs. Fitch lying dead upon the floor, with her skull cleft in twain and her brains scattered about the room.  Hall was met at the door quietly wiping the blood from his ax.  He was arrested, but states that Mrs. Fitch fell upon the ax.  He states that he is not "aware that he did it," and attempts to give the impression that he is insane.

Hall is an ill-tempered, dissolute man, and has not for some time resided with his family.  For several months past, however, he has lived at the farmhouse.  Much excitement is manifested in the village of Guilford.  Mrs. Fitch was a wealthy and worthy citizen. Utica Herald

Death

Another horrible railroad accident occurred about midnight on Tuesday last near Tioga Station on the Erie Road by which a brakesman named Orson Finch of Owego [Tioga Co. NY] received fatal injuries.  Mr. Finch, at the time, was brakesman on No. 5, a mail train which leaves this city going west at 9:20 P.M.  He was occupying the place of a friend who was the regular brakesman and when the train was approaching the bridge near Tioga, conductor Pattingale saw the unfortunate man fall from off the top of a freight car and lodge below between some of the timbers of the bridge. The train was stopped and the man lifted upward and taken onboard when it was discovered that his entire scalp and part of the skull had been torn off and that he was in a dying condition.  Dr. Nichols of Waverly who happened to be on the train at the time made the unfortunate man as comfortable as possible until they reached Waverly.
