Bainbridge Republican, Bainbridge, NY, February 13, 1880

Marriage

BOYD - STILSON:  In Masonville [Delaware Co. NY] February 7th, by the Rev. N. Ripley, Mr. George W. Boyd of Tompkins [Delaware Co. NY] and Miss Sarah A. Stilson of Masonville.

BYINGTON - MARTIN: Charles Byington of Syracuse [Onondaga Co. NY] and Miss Hattie Martin of Coventry [Chenango Co. NY] were united in wedlock at the residence of the bride's parents in the latter place on Wednesday last, and they at once left for Syracuse where Mr. B. is in business.

Mr. Editor:  We would like to notice in our village journal the reception given Mr. W.R. Price and wife on Wednesday evening of last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G.S. Graves.  A very pleasant time was enjoyed.  Mr. Price is a man who has sojourned among us in the past.  We know him to be a man of the right stamp, and from what we read of his wife in the Putnam county Standard, we believe he has made a wise choice. She is a lady very highly spoken of.  the many friends and presents that clustered around the bridal altar, proves the high esteem in which she, as a lady and teacher, was held.  We think they are well matched, both in form and character.  May their days on earth be many and their life be that of the just, which shineth more and more unto the perfect day.  E.H.

Deaths

HARRIS:  Suddenly in Masonville [Delaware Co. NY], February 7th, Mr. Beriah Harris formerly of Colerain, Mass., aged 89 years, 6 months and 14 days.

BRISBIN:  John Brisbin a prominent official of the D.L.&W. Railroad, died at his residence in Newark, N.J., of dropsy on Tuesday, Feb. 4th, aged sixty-one years.  He was born in Sherburne, this county [Chenango Co. NY], in 1818, and when a young man went West for a time, then returned to Pennsylvania, where he acted as paymaster for a canal company, taught school to support himself while studying law, was sent to congress, became assistant counsel for the D.L.&W. R.R. Co., afterwards superintendent and then president, which office he held about seven years, and then resigned to fill the duties of counsel.  During the building of the D.L.&W. Road through this valley, Mr. Bisbin was present and became generally acquainted with the citizens of his native county.  Brisbin, formerly East Greene, was named after him soon after the railroad commenced operations.  Oxford Times

McCARTHY:  Miss Kate McCarthy, daughter of Charles McCarthy, of Binghamton [Broome Co. NY], while in depression of spirits, induced from a term of illness, wandered from home last week Wednesday night and was found frozen to death in the ice of the Susquehanna River the following morning.  She was twenty-two years of age.

CLARK:  Many old friends will regret to learn of the death of the venerable Alfred Clark, father of William W. Clark of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], which occurred at the residence of his son-in-law, J.J. Noyes, in Preston [Chenango Co. NY] on Tuesday afternoon last.  An honest man and a good citizen, he has gone to his reward at the ripe old age of upwards of ninety years.  His funeral will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. Chenango Union, Norwich

JUDD:  Rev. Charles W. Judd, a late missionary from India, and formerly of Tioga County [NY], came to this city [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] last fall to take up his residence here.  He had but a short time to stay, for early this morning a dispatch from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., brought the sad intelligence of his sudden death.  In the short time he had lived in Binghamton, he had won the high esteem of many, particularly those of the Methodist churches, where he has upon several occasions lectured.  Deceased was about fifty-one years of age, and during his entire life had served in doing excellent work for his Master.  He was in every way a Christian gentleman and an earnest worker. Leader, Binghamton.

AXTELL:  Barbourville, Delaware Co. NY:  The scarlet fever is raging here.  Mr. L. Axtell's two little boys were taken sick, and the youngest one died on Monday.  The other one is getting better. Several others are sick and the indications are that the fever will go through the neighborhood. [Harry E. Axtell, 15 May 1877 - 1880, age about 2y, buried in Barbourville Cemetery]
