Death
In Meredith [Delaware Co. NY] on the 23d Oct. Last, John Riley in the 95th year of his age. Mr. Riley took an active part as a soldier in the old French war and held the office of lieutenant during the Revolutionary war.

On the 22d ult at Fort Jackson [St Lawrence Co. NY] on board of canal boat Genesee, E.B. Briggs, captain, Mr. Thomas Maynhood of Saratoga [Saratoga Co. NY] to Mrs. ---, a widow lady from Ohio. The lady came on board at Buffalo [Erie Co. NY] and the gentleman at Jordan [Onondaga Co. NY], strangers to each other. After a long courtship of one hundred and forty-three miles, they proceeded to tie the nuptial knot, a magistrate at Fort Jackson officiating.

At his residence in Kortright [Delaware Co. NY] on Friday the 18th inst., Dr. Gaius Halsey in the 44th year of his age.
Dr. H. had long been lingering under an organic affection of the stomach and liver, and it was evident to himself and to those conversant with the nature and tendency of his affection, that his earthly career was about being brought to a termination.
The subject of the foregoing notice had been in the practice of his profession in Kortright for about eighteen years and by his uniform success in the capacities of physician and surgeon had rendered himself among the most eminent of his profession.
Dr. H. possessed talents of no common order, which were highly improved by his taste for reading and reflection. As a kind, affectionate and humane physician, he was generally beloved. In his practice he obeyed the calls of the indigent as well as of the affluent. In his domestic relations of life, he manifested the most satisfactory evidence of his disinterestedness and attachment to those to whom he was connected by the kindred ties of husband, father, friend and neighbor.
In this dispensation of a Supreme Being, Death has severed the ties which bound husband to wife and rendered four children orphans.
His funeral obsequies were performed before a numerous and attentive audience on Sunday the 20th inst., by the Rev. William McAuley, from Job xxx, 23. And if the countenance is any index to the heart, all present showed how deeply they were interested in the loss of the deceased.

In this village, March 25th, Mary Francis [Brewer] daughter of Mary and Alexander Brewer, aged 1 year, 2 months and 8 days.
News Item
Cherry Valley Gazette, Cherry Valley, NY, March 26, 1862: The battle at Newbern, N.C. told more fearfully upon the citizens of our county [Otsego Co. NY] than any other engagement during the war. Many of the members of Co. I of the 51st Regiment were from this county. Lieut. George D. Allen of Westford [Otsego Co. NY] was killed and Charles G. Roberts of Cherry Valley, mortally wounded. Lieut. Allen was a young man of talent and energy and by his activity and upright conduct had endeared himself to an extensive circle of friends. From the commencement of our difficulties, his whole heart was in the cause of his country and the willingness with which he met an early death in its support is the best evidence that his sentiments were deeply fixed.
Charles G. Roberts, of this place, at the breaking out of the war, resided near Fairfax Court House, Va. but was sent north by his father to avoid being impressed into the rebel service. He resided when here with Elijah Eaton of this village. when found, he had a bayonet stab in the neck and bullet wound in the side from which he has since died.
Capt. R.D. Johnson was seriously wounded. Among the wounded we also notice Cyrus A. Powers and Rufus Pettie, we believe of Westford; and George Chase, we are informed, of Westville [Otsego Co. NY]. We notice also that the following members of Co. I were wounded: R.E. Sperry, George Kane and J.B. McKitchen, but whether any of them were residents of this county we are uninformed.
