CHANDLER:  In Coventry [Chenango Co. NY] July 11th, Laura [Chandler] wife of Col. Rufus Chandler, aged 80 years and 4 months.

Mrs. Laura Benedict Chandler departed this life on the morning of Saturday July 12th, 1879 aged eighty years.

Laura Benedict was born at Winchester, Ct., March 4, 1799.  When four years old, her father, Eden Benedict, removed to this State [NY] and settled upon a farm now lying a mile and a half southeast of Coventryville [Chenango Co. NY].  Thus, her fondest recollections all centered about that dear old home, where with her brothers and sisters she traced the windings of the brook, or played beneath the forest trees. There, too, January 10th, 1822, she was united in marriage to Col. Rufus L. Chandler, of Coventry, and for fifty-seven years they journeyed together, meeting life's chances and changes - its cloud and its sunshine - gathering about them the comforts and luxuries of life, to enjoy in a ripe old age. But a few years since a shadow fell upon their home, dimming all its joy and brightness, out of which their hearts have never been lifted. This was the death of their only daughter and child, Mrs. James M. Phillips.

During the wonderful revival labors in 1832, of Revs. Wilcox and Hull, whose names are associated with the history of our town, she united with the 2d Congregational Church and has ever since remained a faithful member, devoted to its interests, rejoicing in its prosperity and siding in various ways to advance the interests of the beautiful "Kingdom of Christ."

As the weakness of age and disease pressed upon her, her mind reverted to the scenes of her childhood and dwelt lovingly and fondly upon them.  Two weeks since, she left home to visit a nephew now residing upon the old homestead. The first week of her visit was apparently one of real enjoyment and she dwelt lovingly upon the past, recounting scenes in her girlhood's life, talking of her father, brothers and sisters, who made home happy and pleasant.  Then her heart seemed to go out with childlike yearning for that mother to come to her again, or dwelt much upon the memory of her daughter's love - her gentle ministrations in the hour of sickness - all seemed to come with new freshness and beauty to her heart, as she talked of her faithfulness and devotion, and the monument thus reared to her love seemed richer far than the costly shaft which rises o'er her quiet resting place. But little longer were they to be separated.  a few days of pain and suffering and from the dear old home where years ago she went out a fair young bride, the weary aged pilgrim passed to the home, "where rests no shadow, falls no sin or stain."  The Sabbath previous to her death she attended the communion services of the First Congregational Church and through the remaining days of her life she spoke oft and again of the enjoyment she had in that day's sermon and service.

When the sunset light rested upon the homestead and trembled lingeringly among the maples, she was borne silently back to her own home, where funeral services were held upon Sabbath afternoon at 4 o'clock, and from thence to her last repose. To him who in age and loneliness survives her, may light shine mid the darkness and the hope cheer him of soon meeting those loved ones who are "watching and waiting" beyond the river.

Coventryville, July 14,1879   L.

FRENCH:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY] July 11th, Mrs. Mary French wife of James French, aged 63 years and 11 months.  Deceased was the widow of the late Lorenzo Lewis.

Mid soft breathed prayers and tender tears we laid to rest / This brave, true heart that wrought so long and well / How many souls she heavenward led we may not know / but God's' book of sweet remembrance shall tell

Like fine gold tried, wert thou, dear friend, / For God's kindly chastening made thy faith most bright / And his tender watch care o'er thee to the end / Changed all the clouds of darkness into light. / Thy influence yet shall live and star like glow. / And many a whispered prayer shall answered be, / And scattered seeds in quickened hearts shall grow, / And weave a crown of immortelles for thee.

Mid prayers and flowers and hope of meeting bye and bye / While opening buds of resurrection glories tell, / We lay our sacred dead away, nor question why / For comfort sweet, we know, "God doeth all things well."       Carrie Cleveland

On Monday night of last week, William Coykendall, aged nineteen, an employee in the office of the Elmira Advertiser met with a terrible accident which resulted in his death on Thursday.  He was assisting the foreman in lifting the forms from the imposing stone to a platform elevator, which is run up and down a passageway by wire cables, propelled by steam.  For some reason, he did not make sure, as was his custom, that the elevator was up and he took hold of the third page form of the paper and stepped backward as he supposed upon the platform.   Nothing was there to receive him, and he fell to the basement below, a distance of sixty feet, the form following him.  In falling he turned head downward and struck on the oaken cross bar of the elevator.  Here he hung by his legs entangled in the wire cable with the iron chase on top of him.  Medical assistance was promptly on hand but very little could be done for the unfortunate man beyond making him as comfortable as possible. The foreman who had hold of the form with the unfortunate lad, narrowly escaped following the latter in his fearful fall, only saving himself by hanging by one hand to the wire cable.

The funeral took place on Saturday, and the arrangements were all made by the Advertiser people and expenses paid by that office, by consent of the parents, although the latter were abundantly able and willing to defray them. The floral testimonials were many and elaborate, the one from the Advertiser representing a broken column and a printer's "stick" of large dimensions and very beautiful.

White Store, Chenango Co. NY:  The remains of Willis Richmond, who departed this life Monday morning of last week, were interred in our village cemetery on Tuesday afternoon last.  Mr. Richmond was a young gentleman respected and well-liked by all who knew him. Some six or seven years since he traveled in the west, where he remained about a year, and where he contracted the disease which after several years of patient suffering, called the weary traveler home.  He was prepared to go at any moment, having dreamed a few nights before his death at what time he would die, and strange to relate, his death occurred exactly as he had dreamed.  He dreamed he would die upon the noon of the 7th and be buried on the 11th; but owing to the state of the weather, and other causes, his remains could not be preserved longer than the 8th.  The funeral took place from the residence of his father, Joseph Richmond and was well attended.  A long procession followed the remains to their last resting place and paid the last tribute of respect to the honored dead, departing for home a sad and solemn people, trusting the departed one is now with his kindred and friends who have preceded him to that Better Land.

The New Berlin Gazette of last week contradicts the reported death of Willie Mathewson, of that town, who was last year sent to Auburn prison for a term of four years, for abducting an infant at Hubbardsville, Marison County [NY], his companion in crime being Esther Mudge, now in jail in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. We have to record this week the death of one of the old Pioneers of this town [Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY] in the death of Dr. Lindsay who died on the 21st inst. at the advanced age of 85 years.  The Dr. had been a resident of this village for 54 years; being one of the first physicians in the town.  He lived a long life and died much respected by the whole community. the Dr. had "seen a howling wilderness pass through many and varied changes, until now a few scattered tracts of woodland only were left to remind him of his early life."  Having been born the year the Declaration of American Independence was declared, he lived to see our fair country - according to Southern doctrine - broken up. Civilization, with its manifold powers of machinery and Yankee invention, had changed everything in a manner that must have appeared almost marvelous to one who could remember with distinctness, the current events and scenes of 80 years.  His funeral obsequies were held on Saturday last; Sermon was preached by the Rev. William Baldwin, from the text "And Isaac gave up the ghost and died and was gathered unto his people being old and full of days; his sons, Esau and Jacob buried him."

At very interesting and pleasant family gathering took place at Mrs. Seraph Rowland's (widow of the late Rev. Benjamin Rowland) last Saturday, Aug. 2d.  It was the occasion of Mrs. Rowland's 85th birthday, and all of her living children were present to sit down together with their venerable parent at the family board.  their names and residence, as follows:

Gen. Hollis Rowland, Sherburne, aged 68

Mrs. Sally Alcott (wife of Enos Alcott) Castile, Wyoming Co. [NY], aged 65

Mrs. Clara Babcock (widow of Alfred Babcock) Sherburne, aged 59

Eli Rowland, Sherburne, aged 57

Mrs. Louisa Leet (wife of Almon H. Leet), Binghamton, aged 49

Mrs. Hollis Rowland and Mr. A.H. Leet were also present and the Rev. G.R. Burnside and wife were honored guests. The afternoon, as may be supposed, was most agreeably passed in the recital and review of numerous incidents that have marked the pilgrimage of the aged lady, commingling the hopeful and joyous with the sad and mournful.  We may remark that Hollis Rowland's birthday was on the same day, and the fact added not a little to the zest of the occasion.  (of course, it was a convenience to celebrate his own birthday in conjunction with his mother's).  The strength and vigor of Mrs. Rowland is remarkable for one of her years and her energy and industry are in perfect keeping with the ancestry which have developed the forests into the fruitful field. Recently she has cut, fitted, made and trimmed a dress for one of her daughters in a manner that would do credit to any young woman. This meeting of the mother and children was one of the cherished events that brightens the pathway of life's declivity.

A Prominent Oxford Resident Missing for More than a Week:  It is now rumored on our streets that William A. Button a prominent businessman of our village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY] and engaged in the manufacture of picture frames, has suddenly disappeared in a very mysterious manner.  On Wednesday last he bade his family an affectionate goodbye as was his usual custom, started to deliver a quantity of picture frames and during the day put his horse in a hotel barn at Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], the same in which Palmer Rich left his horse before his sudden disappearance, saying he would return in a short time.  From that time down to now nothing has been heard from him.  Oxford parties who owned the horse becoming alarmed at his absence went to Norwich and brought the horse home.  It was supposed Mr. Button has considerable money in his possession and whether he has gone to parts unknown with such property or whether, like the late Palmer Rich, he was enticed into some out of the way place and foully dealt with is a matter of conjecture among our citizens. Death

At Judge Beekman's in Sharon, Schoharie County [NY] on the 23d ult. Mrs. Sarah Lowe widow of Nicholas Lowe, deceased, in the 90th year of her age.  The vast tribute of respect was paid to her remains on the 24th instant and seldom have we witnessed a more solemn and impressive scene, although she had arrived at that advanced age.  Upwards of forty mourners testified the heartfelt grief they experienced in consequence of the bereavement for she was not only endeared to them by the ties of blood and consanguinity, but that exemplary life and desire of doing good to all was that which drew the cords of affection more powerfully and commanded the respect of all who knew her.  For more than fifty years of her life she was a professor of the Christian religion and a meek and lowly follower of Jesus of Nazareth. To know her was to love her; to be acquainted with her was to respect her.  Albany Gazette

Tuesday afternoon about 5 o'clock, Henry Poole, a brakeman on conductor Adgate's train, was assisting in making up a train in the railroad yards.  He cut the caboose loose and ran ahead of it.  Miscalculating the speed of the car, he was hit, thrown upon the track and run over, the wheels passing over the left leg between the ankle and knee and over the right near the groin.  Both legs were as nearly severed as is possible from an accident of the kind. The poor fellow lived until 9 o'clock and died.  He suffered but little pain, was conscious and conversed freely with Dr. Eatler, his mother and Rev. A.H. Richardson.  On the 8th of July young Poole's father, George Poole, died. The mother is nearly distracted with grief. Coroner Houghton held an inquest yesterday, but no responsibility for negligence on the part of the train hands was established.  Mrs. Poole, being a poor and worthy woman, our citizens have generously donated her a purse of money, which will afford one kind of relief, but is no compensation for the death of a son upon who she very largely depended.

The deceased was an amiable and pious man; kind, unobtrusive and benevolent; and of great eminence and usefulness in his profession. Though he died from home, and far away from his wife, who is on a visit to her relations in New York, yet he died in the midst of a large circle of friends endeared to him by many ties and who paid every attention and respect to his remains that the solemn occasion demanded. Mississippi Southern

Dr. Westcott, whose sudden death is announced in the paragraph above was a son of Dr. Gardiner Westcott of Springfield, Otsego Co. [NY] and a son-in-law of Dr. Colby Knapp of Guilford [Chenango Co. NY].  the deceased was well known in this place, where several of his wife's relatives reside, and was universally beloved and esteemed as a most excellent and worthy man.  The grief of his estimable wife at her sudden bereavement, the intelligence of which reached her at Springfield as she was about to start south to join her husband may, perhaps, be partially conceived by those who have drunk deep themselves of the sorrows of life.  May the Lord sustain and comfort her.

____________

It is our painful duty to record the sudden death of Dr. Westcott of Jackson, Mi., he died in this place [Port Gibson] on the 23d ult. of hemorrhage of the lungs, in about fifteen minutes after the bleeding began.  On the next day his corpse was carried into the Presbyterian church, followed by many of our citizens, where a funeral sermon was preached, the funeral procession hen moved to the grave, when the impressive funeral service of the Episcopal church was performed by the Rev. Particulars of Dr. Tyler's Death

A Fort Plain correspondent gives the following particulars relative to the death of Dr. Tyler of Rome [Oneida Co. NY].

Dr. Tyler was here to visit a sick lady, residing about 5 miles out of town.  He was brought to the village in a carriage to take the train due here at 11:30 p.m. for Albany.  He was left in the village preferring to walk to the depot - a few minutes past 11 o'clock, and with his medicine he started to walk there.  The night was dark.  A stranger here came from said train, and on his way to the village heard cries from a voice, "help, help."  Having some misgivings about the cry and some fear, the stranger came to the village and secured a man with a light and returned to the place where they found the Doctor lying on the walk, asking help, yet not conscious enough to describe his situation or difficulty.  They raised him against the wall in a sitting posture and returned for a third man to help carry him to the public house.  That done he was placed in a stable upon some straw and covered with a buffalo robe.  Between 7 and 8 o'clock next morning, he was examined and found dead, though yet slightly warm.  On careful examination of the body by medical men, with reference to testimony at the coroner's inquest, three slight bruises of the skin were found, one on the left ear, another opposite on the left cheek bone and another above the right eye.  No other part of the body exhibited any sign of bruise, hurt or injury.  His clothing seemed perfect. A wallet in his pocket contained about $20.  His medicine box was missing and gave rise to a suspicion of robbery.  It was found, however, early in the morning by workmen passing there, on the wall near where the Doctor was discovered.

The wounds were carefully examined and found to be only abrasions of the skin, such as would readily occur in a fall, or in lying and rolling against a stone or gravel, or any other hard substance.

Dr. Tyler, it is clear, therefore, was not murdered, nor was he robbed. The question arises, what was the cause of his death?  From the time he left the carriage to the time he was found, about 15 or 20 minutes, the time he was lying upon the ground, was nearly an hour.

His friends stated that he was in feeble health, had only partially recovered from an injury received several months ago.

The examination of the body was sufficient to prove that death was not produced by external injury.  A careful dissection of the brain, heart and spinal column was not made, on account of the earnest appeal against it by his friends.  Death evidently resulted from one of two causes - either from paralysis of the limbs, extending rapidly and involving the whole nervous system and brain or from fatty degeneration of the heart.  In either case it was most unfortunate that he should have lain upon the cold ground, nearly an hour, and then be placed in a cold stable. Warmth, cordials, and stimulants were desirable and might have done much to restore him. Attending the case of this stranger, Dr. Tyler, there was a thoughtless and inexcusable mistake, although not intentional and none deplore it more than the great mass of our own citizens.

News Items

We enjoyed a conversation the other evening with an old resident of Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] - one of the pioneers of the printing business in this place.  His name is E.S. Jennings and he is at present at work with William Myers, marble cutting.  He came to Bainbridge in 1843 and went to work for J. Hunt, Jr., who was just getting the material in order for the establishment of the Bainbridge Eagle, probably the pioneer paper of the town.  Mr. Jennings remained with Mr. Hunt for about nine months, at which time he purchased Mr. Hunt's interest in the Eagle, Henry A. Clark, Esq. of this village, also owning an interest in the office at the time.  Mr. Jennings published the Eagle until the Spring of 1844 when he took the bird down, and christened tot paper the American Freeman which was subsequently changed to the Bainbridge Freeman.  For two years Mr. Jennings published the Freeman, when he sold out his interest in the office to George N. Carhart on account of ill health.  Mr. Carhart at the time of his purchase of the offices was a steady, industrious journeyman printer at work for Mr. Jennings.  But his elevation to the post of editor, as it has often effected other susceptible mortals, the young man began to go to ruin through his intemperate habits and the destruction of the building in which the office was located and the largest share of the material by fire in 1848 closed up the newspaper business for some years in Bainbridge for it couldn't Phoenix.  Mr. Jennings was the principal sufferer of the fire, as he still holds Carhart's notes for the proceeds from the sale of the office.  Mr. Jennings relates many pleasing anecdotes of his experience as an editor and enjoys the telling as well as the listener.

The Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] papers report a centenarian as now visiting in that city.  The subject of the sketch is a colored man named Charles Burt who has reached the remarkable age of one hundred and four years.  His home is in Lisle, Broome Co. [NY] where he resides with a wife and daughter.  He was born on board a ship which was enroute to this country with a cargo of slaves from the Bermuda Islands; was brought up in slavery but was set free by this mistress when he was twenty-eight years of age.  Among other places mentioned, he lived seven or eight years in the family of Gen. Rathbone, in Oxford [Chenango Co. NY]; one year in Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] and four years in Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY].  He remembers seeing the carriage in which was Washington when he was president. With the exception of being an inveterate chewer and smoker, he is temperate, is a Christian, reads his Bible, enjoys remarkably good health and is able to walk about the streets without assistance.

PADDOCK:  the venerable Zacariah Paddock, D.D. whose life has been trebling in the balance for weeks, died at his home in Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] on the morning of the fourth inst. at the ripe age of eighty-one.  For several years he had been on the list of superannuated Methodist clergymen, but in spite of this fact he may be said to have died in the harness, having preached as long as his strength held out.  For twenty-two years he was presiding elder in five different districts.  Dr. Paddock was well known in this village and was highly esteemed for his uprightness and integrity as well as his many Christian virtues.  He was last in this village at the Conference held a few weeks since, and Father Paddock was everywhere greeted, whether from saint or sinner, with genuine affection. Those who had so long labored with him in Conference connection felt, as they helped him down, the church steps for the last time, that that was his last conference, and as they took him by the hand, many of them and bade him a long farewell the scene was affecting indeed.  Dr. Paddock has been in the ministry since 1817 and was active in the discharge of the duties of his office until 1870 when he was superannuated at his own request, though until the day of his death, he was active in the performance of such duties as came within his province.  He has gone to his reward.

PADDOCK:  In Binghamton [Broome Co. NY] July 4th Rev. Zachariah Paddock, D.D., aged 51 years.

Rev. Zachariah Paddock, D.D. expired at his residence in Binghamton, at twenty-five minutes past three o'clock on Friday morning last, in the eighty-first year of his age.  Sixty-one years ago, he was licensed to preach and for upwards of fifty years he faithfully and zealously labored as a Methodist minister.  He was widely known in Central New York, having for many years served as minister and Presiding Elder in the old Oneida Conference, and he was for a time editor of the Banner, a Methodist paper published in Auburn [Cayuga Co. NY].  In 1870 he was superannuated by the Conference on account of his advanced age and failing health and since that time he has resided in Binghamton, preaching often, officiating at Marriages, funerals, church and society meetings, writing for the newspapers, etc.  He attended the annual session of Wyoming conference, held in this village in April last.  His end was peaceful, his last words being, "I am walking with Death."  His funeral was largely attended on Sunday afternoon, Bishop Peck preaching the sermon.  Among the clergy men present were Rev. T. Harroun, Rev. Eben Halley, Rev. Dr. Parke, rector of Christ Church; Rev. M.C. Lightner, rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd; and Rev. Father Hourigan pastor of St. Patrick's Church, and Rev. N.J. Quinn, the assistant pastor.  The pall bearers were Rev. Dr. Clarke, Rev. J.B. Sumner, Rev. A.D. Alexander, Hon. W.B. Edwards, Hon. B.N. Loomis, and Hon. Ausburn Birdsall. The room was heavily draped in festoons of black. Also, the easy chair upon the platform, which was occupied for many years by the deceased, was draped in mourning and left vacant.

HUSTED:  A deaf and dumb man who went by the name of "Dummy," residing at Hamilton [Madison Co. NY] was killed on the Midland railroad about half a mile north of the Earlville depot [Madison Co. NY], between three and four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon.  He reached Earlville on the afternoon train from Syracuse and was making his way home on foot, taking the railroad track, when he was overtaken by an extra coal train, and although the engineer repeatedly whistled a warning, he of course did not heed it. Both legs were cut off near the knee, his head crushed and his body badly cut.  He died within half an hour after the accident.  A doctor was called from Earlville and later a coroner from Hamilton. The name of the unfortunate man was Lyman Husted, His age was about forty-five years, and he was without a family.  He had worked a long time at shoemaking in Hamilton and was well thought of.

HOLMES & SANFORD:  The body of Miss Olive C. Holmes, who was drowned in Onondaga Lake, June 21st, was found floating on the water Wednesday afternoon of last week, by her father.  The remains of Alfred T. Sanford who was drowned at the same time, were also found floating on Thursday evening, about a mile and a half distant from the spot where Miss Holmes' body was found. The body was greatly discolored and disfigured, and the clothing torn as if by grappling hooks.  Both funerals were held at the Central Baptist church in Syracuse [Onondaga Co. NY].  Mr. Holmes' remains were interred at Oakwood cemetery in that city and those of Mr. Sanford were taken to Homer [Cortland Co.] for burial.

MORGAN:  New Berlin, Chenango Co. NY:  The funeral of Eddie Morgan was largely attended on Monday last.  The services were impressive and affecting.  Water lilies were placed in every beautiful form about Eddie, and one was in his cold white fingers. These sweet white flowers must ever bring to the hearts of those most deeply afflicted sad and yet sacred memories.  If water lilies could grow and bloom away from the silvery river, we almost know that they would find a place on Eddie's grave.

At that time this town was almost a howling wilderness.  Instead of roads, people traveled by marked trees as their guides.  She has lived to see the forests cleared away and splendid farmhouses and villages erected in their stead; to see the population of the United States increase from 5,000,000 to nearly 40,000,000 of people.  Her first husband, Mr. Clinton, has been dead 47 years.  Soon after his death, she married Daniel Bishop, who died between 30 and 40 years ago, since which time she has been a widow. At the time of her death, she was the oldest woman in the town of Butternuts.  She has left five children, four sons and one daughter.  Her eldest son, Eli, is 70 years of age and her youngest son, Isaac, 52.  She was member of the Episcopal church for fifty years and esteemed as a Christian by all who knew her.  She was a favorite with all her neighbors for her acts of kindness and has done much to alleviate the sick and afflicted and palliate their sufferings.  Her funeral was attended at the Episcopal church on Saturday, Dec. 2nd, sermon by the rector of Zion Church, Morris.
