Mary P. Wells
Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850
Mary P. Wells, daughter of Daniel and Polly Wells, and granddaughter of Jerusha Briggs, died March 18, 1850, aged 25 years.  She had formerly professed to love the Savior, but by neglect of duty that love had grown cold.  During the last summer, she was attacked with consumption, which gradually wasted her strength until she fell a victim to the destroyer. While protracted disease was preying upon her, she had full time to survey her condition.  In doing so, she was led to the cross, and found peace with God through our lord Jesus Christ.  In her last moments she called to her bedside her father and mother, and sisters, and insisted on a pledge to meet her in heaven. She sent to all her former associates a request, direct form the gate of death:  "Tell them all to meet me in heaven."  This is the fifth young person whose remains have passed through our Church to the graveyard within a few weeks.  May the living lay these things to heart.  H.F. Row,  Sauquoit, March 25, 1850

Joseph Woodard
Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850
Joseph Woodard, of the town of Columbus, Chenango Co., N.Y., departed this life Feb. 28, 1850, aged 45 years.  He experienced religion about twenty-seven years since, and soon after united with the M.E. Church, and remained in the Church of his first and only choice, till he joined the Church triumphant.  He had for a considerable time been afflicted with a spasmodic affection, which at times threatened his life, but through the means of medical aid, and the constant attention of a most affectionate and self sacrificing companion he had so far recovered his health as to give great encouragement to his anxious family and friends, having for a short time appeared to enjoy better health than he had for some time before.  He died just before midnight.  Having retired at an early hour in the evening, he had slept for some time, after which he was taken in a succession of spasms, and soon closed his mortal life. This brother married the daughter of Br. Dudley Hardy, who also departed this life about four months before the death of Br. Woodard; thus we have left in one family two widows, the mother and daughter, both of whom feel the loss they are called to sustain. But as those brethren were undoubtedly prepared, they bow in Christian submission.  This house and family have been a home for the way worn itinerant ministers of our Church for more than forty years, and many of our brethren in the ministry will feel to sympathize with the bereaved friends, and we bespeak an interest in their prayers, that the God of the widow and fatherless may sanctify this bereavement to their present and eternal good.   L. Beach.

Genevieve Bellinger
1914 - 1933
Funeral services for Miss Genevieve Bellinger, 18, whose life was crushed out in a Sunday morning automobile accident on the Norwich - North Norwich highway, one and one-half miles north of this city, will be held Wednesday afternoon.  A prayer service will be held from the home of the victim's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M. Bellinger of North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] at 1:15 Wednesday afternoon, followed by services at 2 o'clock in Emmanuel Episcopal church.  Rev. Lloyd S. Charters, rector, will officiate and interment will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery [Norwich, NY].

Harold Bellinger, 12, brother of the deceased and who was seriously injured in the same accident, was reported as resting comfortably at the Chenango Memorial Hospital Monday afternoon.  The boy sustained a fractured skull and other injuries.  His left ear was badly torn and lacerated, but surgeons sutured it in the hopes it may be saved.  The skull fracture was reduced and there is every indication barring complications that the lad will recover.  Miss Bellinger's body was horribly mangled almost beyond recognition.  Her face and skull were crushed in, every bone in the face and skull being broken, and her left arm fractured.  That she was instantly killed was the opinion of physicians.  The accident, frightful as it proved to be, shocked the countryside, and moved the parents almost to distraction.

Miss Bellinger and her brother had been in attendance at the Episcopal Sunday school and were enroute to their home in North Norwich at the time. The accident occurred about 11 o'clock near the Tiffnay home.  Miss Bellinger, driver, was proceeding north and by her side sat her little brother, only occupants of the family car.  A heavily loaded Reo trailer truck was traveling south. This machine carrying many cans of milk for delivery at the Borden plant here was piloted by Jesse F. Wynn of Smyrna, 34, brother of Charles A. Wynn of Smyrna, owner of the truck. Riding with Wynn was his brother-in-law, Frank Beesmer of North Norwich, who lives in one of Mr. Bellinger's houses at North Norwich.  He was invited to ride to Norwich when Wynn's truck came along as Beesmer and Bellinger were having a conversation in front of the latter's property.

It was not a head on collision, but the two motor driven vehicles sideswiped each other in such manner as to completely demolish the automobile and damage the rear of the trailer truck.  Both the Bellinger car and the trailer truck came to rest on the east side of the highway. All the marks in the road including the glass, dirt and debris from the wreckage remained on the east side of the road, an indication to those investigating the fatality that part of the trailer was extending to the left, when the machine came in contact with the passenger car.  The Reo is a six-ton affair, with cab and trailer attached behind. The trailer probably swayed to the left when the driver turned sharply to the right.  It had an overhanging body and when the impact came the car hit the front hub cap of the truck and then went under the overhanding body and was telescoped.

Dr. E. W. Wilcox, coroner, Sergt, A.E. Young and Trooper James Heath, District Attorney Glenn F. Carter and Deputies Floyd Padgett and Harry Watts were called to the scene of the accident.  Measurements were taken at the direction of the officials and photographs were also made.  The force of the collision was so great that it entirely removed the top and front seat of the car and jammed the body of Miss Bellinger to the floor board.  Harold Bellinger was thrown so that his head rested on the pavement with his feet and legs in the car.  It was estimated by Mr. Wynn, truck driver, that both the automobile and his truck were traveling about 35 miles an hour. He and Beesmer were questioned by officers, but no statements were taken down in writing. Wynn claims Miss Bellinger was not looking in his direction, and Beesmer says he was looking to his right and did not observe the approaching car. Because of his injuries Harold Bellinger has not been questioned as to his version of the accident.  It was reported that another car was following the truck but failed to stop after the accident.  and the identity of the driver had not yet been learned.

Although rendered unconscious by his head striking the pavement Harold recovered before reaching the Chenango Memorial Hospital to which institution he was brought by passing motorists.  Dr. E.F. Gibson, the Bellinger family physician, happened to be at the hospital, and he and Dr. T. F. Manley attended the injured lad.  Genevieve Bellinger would have reached her 19th birthday on August 3, next. She graduated from Norwich high school last June and was now pursuing a post graduate course. She was well liked by her associates.  was a member of Emmanuel church and school, and the Fellowship Class, and her untimely death is deeply deplored by all.  The parents and her brother, who will be 13 years old July 20, next survive. The brother also attends the Norwich schools.  Coroner Wilcox will hold an inquest in the case but he has yet fixed a date.  An investigation is also being continued by the district attorney and other officials

Eleazer Bidwell
Chenango Union, July 31, 1890
The death of Eleazer Bidwell, our veteran Democrat occurred at the home of his son, Alfred Bidwell in West Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], on Friday last, at the advanced age of 87 years.  Deceased was born in 1803, and at six months of age came with his parents to Smyrna, where he has since resided.  He was honest and industrious and was honored and respected by all who enjoyed his acquaintance. Obituaries (April 18)

Jane Hamblin
Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850
Jane [Hamblin] wife of Heman Hamblin, died in Wilson, N.Y. [Niagara Co.], March 21, 1850, aged 44 years. She had been an acceptable member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for about twelve years past.  Her piety was very sincere, and of a stern cast.  For the last few months she was afflicted with aberration of mind of a somewhat peculiar kind, and yet in religious things she seemed to be quite sane.  In her most rational moments her hope in Christ was most firm, and she longed to depart and be with the Lord. There are left a husband and three children to mourn her departure.   D.B. Lawton

Margaret Morsell
Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850
Margaret Morsell, widow of Kidd morsell, died suddenly, of hemorrhage of the lungs, at the house of Rev. G. Osband, at Macedon Centre, N.Y. [Wayne Co.], Feb. 17, 1850, aged 81 years, 10 months, and 11 days.  Mother M. in her youth was a member of the Presbyterian Church, but thought she had no experimental knowledge of the religion of Christ, till she sat under the ministry of the Rev. Wm. Ryland, in Prince George Co., Md., some 45 years since.  Since about the time of her conversion, her interests have been intimately identified with the M.E. Church. She has been a cheerful and faithful contributor to the charitable and benevolent institutions of the Church. She has also been characterized for her ardent religious devotions, and her unshaken confidence in a special Devine Providence.  Death came suddenly, but the evidence that she was ready for the summons, is every way satisfactory to all who knew her.  "The righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance."   P. McKinstry

-?- Crapo
Chenango American, January 10, 1856
A sad accident occurred about one mile east of Chenango Forks [Broome Co., NY], on Tuesday morning last.  A man named Crapo, a resident of Lisle [Broome Co., NY], was out rabbit hunting, in company with his brother.  It appears from his own statement, that he was standing on a stump, with his gun, a double-barreled one, resting by his side; and that while in the act of stooping to remove some obstruction, his gun slipped off from the stump, and in its decent, the hammers of both barrels caught, discharging their contents in his left side, forcing a portion of his clothing completely into his body, breaking two ribs, and lacerating his flesh horribly.  Medical assistance was immediately rendered, but he was beyond the reach of human aid.  He lingered in the most excruciating agony until Wednesday morning, when he expired.  He leaves a family to mourn his untimely end.

Obituaries (April 16)

Capt. Daniel N. Cone
Chenango Union, June 1, 1876
Capt. Daniel N. Cone, of South Otselic [Chenango Co., NY], died instantly, without premonition of heart disease on the 24th inst.  Capt. Cone was born in the town of Vernon, Ct, in 1804; was married at the age of twenty-seven; came to this State the same year, and settled in the town of Lincklaen, where he lived as an upright and highly respected citizen.  He moved to South Otselic in 1870, and has resided here since, until his death last Wednesday.  He leaves a family of four sons and four daughters, with his wife, to mourn this great loss; all of whom live in this vicinity, with the exception of Orello, who resides at Canton, St. Lawrence county; is a minister at that place.  Capt. Cone, being deeply imbued in, adhered to, and advocated strongly the Democratic principles. Being elected Assessor in February, 1874, he had assumed the duties of that office, in the performance of which, so far, he had taken a judicious, reliable and satisfactory course; thus giving evidence of equity and wisdom in his decided and unerring judgment.  He fully believed in a thorough retrenchment and reform, from the wild extravagance and corruption of many of the public agents.

Emanuel Shampang
1839-1913
Mr. Shampang died at his home in White Store [Chenango Co., NY] on Thursday last at 2 AM.  Although he was popularly known to everyone as Joseph, that was not name given him at his birth, but was acquired as a nickname later in life.  He was born in Lachine, Canada July 15, 1839, and had been for many years a resident of White Store, most of the time having owned and conducted the mill at that place.  Deceased was of a jovial and friendly disposition and had many friends in this valley who will regret to hear of his death.  He was a veteran of the Civil War having enlisted in the 184th Regiment.  Up to the time of the disbanding of the Post at South New Berlin on account of the inroads of death on its membership, Mr. Shampang was a valued member.  His death was the fourth loss of the kind sustained by the Post within a few months.  Besides his wife, deceased leaves surviving him a family of eight children, all of whom were privileged to be present at the funeral:  Charles W. Shampang, of Massachusetts; Mrs. Ida E. Young of Randolph, NY; Henry who resides at home; Mrs. George Law, who with her husband had just moved into the homestead; Frank, George, Fred and Archie who all reside in the vicinity of White Store. There were also present from a distance:  Mrs. Connelly of Randolph, NY and Mrs. Clark of Greene--granddaughters; Mr. and Mrs. John Beach of Lacona, NY, and Nathan Culberson of Butternuts.  Funeral services were held from the house on Monday at one o'clock, Rev. Duren of South New Berlin officiating.  Very fine floral pieces were contributed by the family and others.  The burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, White Store, on the family lot, where one daughter, Mrs. Wade, the victim of the sad tragedy at Guilford center a few years ago lies buried.

Abigail J. Purdie
Sherburne News, March 7, 1896
PURDIE:  In Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], March 2, 1896, Mrs. A.J. Purdie, widow of the late Thomas Purdie, aged 85 years.  Mrs. A.J. Purdie, relict of the late Thomas Purdie, died on Monday afternoon at her late residence at the age of 85 years.  She was a member of the Friend's Church, in former days one of its most earnest workers, until age and feeble health compelled her to remain at home.  She leaves two daughters and several grandchildren. The family seems to have been unfortunate, and adverse circumstances seem to have gathered around which should excite the sympathy of the whole community. The eldest son, Thomas Purdie, Jr., died quite suddenly some ten years since, and last year the youngest, and only son, James L., was taken and recently a son-in-law was placed in the State Hospital, at Binghamton, probably for life, and now each of the remaining daughters are very sick, the youngest not expected to live.

Gertrude E. Stone
Norwich Sun, October 21, 1924
Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY]:  This community was saddened on Sunday, October 19, by the death of Miss Gertrude E. Stone, life-long resident of Smyrna. She was stricken during the week.  The best efforts of doctors and a nurse were unavailing, and on Sunday afternoon she passed peacefully away. She was the daughter of John Q. and Susanna Knowles Stone and was born in Smyrna.  Of a quiet and home loving nature, she was always careful for the welfare of others, ever anxious to take her place in caring for the aged or afflicted and was assisting in the care of a friend when taken with her last sickness.  She is survived by an uncle, Robert H. Knowles of Earlville and a host of friends throughout this section who will be saddened by her untimely passing.  Funeral service will be held from the Baptist church in this village at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. C. V. Stocum officiating and interment in the family plot in the Willcox cemetery [Smyrna, NY].

Betsey Ann Cash
Morning Sun, Norwich, NY, May 11, 1900
Betsey Ann Cash of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY] was the victim of an accident Tuesday evening which caused her death.  For the past five years, she had been the housekeeper at James P. Willcox's and Tuesday evening called on Mr. Willcox's daughter Mrs. W.P. Briggs, who resides but a short distance away. About 8:30 o'clock Miss Cash started to return, leaving the house by the back entrance.  It was very dark and in going down the steps she fell and sustained severe injuries about the head and neck. She was taken into the house and Dr. T.G. Packer called. She died at about 11 o'clock.  Miss Cash was born near Albany, N.Y., seventy-four years ago and came to Smyrna with her parents when about eight years old, and had ever since resided in the vicinity.  She leaves a sister living in Sherburne, a brother in Earlville and another brother in Smyrna.

Marcia A. Brigham
Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850
Miss Marcia A. Brigham, died at her father's residence, in Richford, N.Y. [Tioga Co.], Feb. 24, 1850, aged 19 years.  Possessed of an amiable disposition, she endeared herself to her acquaintances at home and abroad, and was cherished with choice fondness in the family circle.  She was religiously trained, and early became pious.  To add to her education, already well commenced, she entered Oneida Conference Seminary, where she rapidly advanced in knowledge, in Christian graces, and in the confidence and esteem of all her teachers and associates. She returned to her doting parents to remain with them, it has been ordered, only a few short weeks; but during this period her piety, her anxious concern for the salvation of her young friends, her character, in all respects, afford consoling evidence to her deeply afflicted relatives and friends that she rests now with the Savior. Her sickness was short, but terribly distressing, and attended with delirium; but suffering God's will, she now has her reward, we trust, with God in heaven.   Henry Hannister,  Cazenovia, March 24, 1850

Phebe E. Boyden
Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850
Phebe E. Boyden, wife of Wm. Boyden, died in Cincinnatus [Cortland Co., NY], January 1, in the 30th year of her age.  When death came, she was ready saying, "I am not afraid to die.  I am going, going to rest with Jesus." So quietly did she breathe her last, that we were constrained to adopt the language of the poet thus:
"Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep:
From which none ever wakes to weep"
J. Soule  Cincinnatus, March 20, 1850

Lucy Chaffee
Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850
Sister Lucy Chaffee, wife of deacon Albigeme Chafee, departed this life, after a lingering illness in the town of Palermo, Oswego Co., N.Y., January 17, aged 59 years.  As the clouds break away near the setting of the sun, after a stormy day, and the sun shines forth in all its loveliness, so with this dear sister.  She never manifested a high esteem of herself as a Christian, but an elevated and exalted regard for virtue and piety. Doubts and fears often troubled her during many years of a blameless, Christian life. But at the last closing up of her days, her evidence was clear, and her prospects bright; with a serene mind she smiled at the approach of death, and then passed away.    Ansel Griffith.  Gilbert's Mills, March 22, 1850
