Deaths

HICKEY:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], suddenly, July 18th, Mr. Owen Hickey, aged about 50 years.

Owen Hickey, a laboring man, came to his death on Sunday night or Monday morning last, in this village, under the following circumstances.  He was a single man, and boarded at the house of William Carr, who keeps a boarding house and drinking saloon on the tow-path, north of the lock near the hammer factory.  About two o'clock on Monday morning, his lifeless body was found by officer Smith, at the bottom of the front entrance to the cellar of that house, he having evidently fallen from the window of the second floor, immediately above.  coroner Avery held an inquest on Monday morning, and upon examination it was found that his neck was broken in two places.  His roommate testified that Hickey was in their room when he went to sleep; that both had been drinking during Sunday.  Deceased had his pants and boots on at the time of the accident, which probably occurred after midnight.  It is supposed that he sat in the window and losing control of himself fell out.  He is represented as an industrious man, having been employed upon the Midland Railroad for two years past, who occasionally took a little too much beverage.  he was aged about 50 years, and has a brother, John Hickey, living at Weedsport, Cayuga Co., and another brother supposed to be residing at Syracuse.

HYER:  In Rockdale [Chenango Co. NY], suddenly, July 15th, Mr. Charles E. Hyer, aged about 50 years.

Charles E. Hyer, of Rockdale, who has been blind for a number of years past, died very suddenly on Friday last.  He left his home for a walk, and crossing the river, stopped at a neighbor's house, saying he would rest a few moments.  He was observed to become drowsy, while sitting in his chair; soon he became unconscious, and death speedily ensued.  He was about 50 years of age.

BATEMAN:  In Hamilton [Madison Co. NY], July 15th, Mr. Benjamin Bateman, aged 61 years, formerly of Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY].

BLACKMAN:  Justus Blackman, one of the oldest inhabitants of the town of Pharsalia [Chenango Co. NY], died on the 14th of last June, aged 89 years.  He was born in Andover, Conn. Fifty years ago he came to this County, and settled in the town of Plymouth; he lived there until twenty-nine years ago, when the "dread monster" entered his home circle and took therefrom the joy and companion of his bosom.  He then went to Pennsylvania, where he remained seven years, and then came to Pharsalia, where he has lived from that time until his death, with his daughter, Mrs. Marsh. Eleven years ago last January his hip was fractured by a fall, and he was helpless form that time, and for the past year was not dressed, nor able to leave his bed; yet he bore all his suffering and affliction without a murmur, with all that fortitude that characterizes the true Christian, and has now gone to his long home, to meet friends gone before, and to reap that reward which awaits the finally faithful.

Beebe was formerly a resident of Lincklaen, in this County, and represented the County in the legislature of 1860.  He was universally esteemed for his many good qualities, and his loss will be mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends.  He was in the 50th year of his age. Death of Hon. Ansel Berry - Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, July 13, 1870

BERRY:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], July 10th, Ansel Berry, Esq., aged 64 years.

Although an event long anticipated, we were surprised and pained to learn, on Sabbath evening last, that Ansel Berry was dead.  He died of consumption, after a protracted illness, at his residence on North Main Street.

Mr. Berry was born in Connecticut in 1805.  Losing both father and mother when but an infant, he was placed in charge of a sister living in the Black River country, in this State.  Subsequently he lived for a short time in Onondaga county, thence removed to Tompkins, where he remained, mostly upon a farm, enjoying such advantages only as were common to most poor boys of that day and age, and in like circumstances, till he had attained his majority.  About the year 1826, he married Miss Lorinda Gage, of Enfield, N.H., and removed to Norwich.  He here learned the hatter's trade with David Griffing, Esq. When mastering the occupation of his choice, he engaged in the hatting business with Thomas Merrill then living at Sherburne Four Corners.  The co-partnership existed for a number of years, when Mr. Merrill disposed of his interest to Mr. Berry, who carried on the concern till 1854.  In connection with the business of the store, Mr. Berry was interested to quite an extent in manufacturing operations, the wool and fur trade, and in speculations of one kind or another, in all of which he was eminently successful.

Previous to 1854 he was elected Coroner, holding the office for three terms or nine consecutive years.  In 1856 he was elected to the Legislature from the first Assembly District, running largely ahead of his ticket.  He served acceptably on the committee of thirteen, known as the sub-committee of the whole, and one or two others of considerable importance.  To his exertions we are mainly indebted for a much-needed amendment, which was effected at that session of our village charter.  In 1857 he was chosen Trustee of the corporation with Harvey Hubbard and Hale and was made President of the board.  In 1858 he was elected Supervisor.

His health beginning to fail in the winter of 1860, he gradually withdrew from active pursuits, and for the past two or three years wholly relinquished the cares and perplexities incident to a business life.

Warm and ardent in his politics, he ever held decided views and opinions, which, though in no boastful spirit, he was always ready and willing to maintain.  He was strong in the affections of his household, and in his friendships reliable and confiding.  Though an economist, he had a benevolent heart, and many there are who have received benefactions from his bounty, which the world know not of, who "will rise up and call him blessed."  One of the founders of the Methodist church, of which he was a member, he was one of the main pillars - its most liberal supporters.  One of the last acts of his life was deeding the Methodist parsonage lot to the Society, a gift of the amount due him, reaching nearly $1,200.

He was twice married.  His first wife dying in 1835, he subsequently married her sister, Miss Hannah J. Gage, with whom he lived most happily and who survives him.  He leaves two sons, Edwin and B. Gage Berry.

Another worthy citizen and active businessman for long years, one who for the most part of a useful life was identified with the growth and prosperity of this community and its institutions, and who was interested in every good work, has been taken from us.  Another pilgrim, ripe in experience and with locks silvered with the frosts of many winters, has passed the waves of Jordan and gained the promised land of life and peace eternal.

Hark! the bell!  Its metal voice is tolling, / With a solitary, solemn tone, / That the Book of Fate has been unrolling, / And a pilgrim from this earth is gone.

Three time three it strikes!  A wife, a mother, / Fallen low, when in the prime of years; / Mournful stand around her parents, brother, / Husband, children, left to grief and tears.

But why should thy friends be sad and weeping? / Happy, three times happy is thy lot! / Blessed all who in the Lord are sleeping; / Thine immortal spirit rests with God.

Happy thought!  In a frail body dwelling, / Was a soul, intelligent and good, / By Religion's noble impulse swelling / Living, dying with a cheerful mood.

Thus prepared and tried in her probation, / In no Christian duty found remiss, / Christ has raised her to his glorious station, / She has entered into Heaven's bliss

In Jersey City, on Sunday, the 9th inst. of consumption, Randall Cadugan, son of John Cadugan, Esq., of Norwich Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], aged 24 years. [Dec. 19, 1849]

Scarcely four months have elapsed since the immediate inmates of this afflicted family were called upon to bury forever from their sight an affectionate wife and a tender mother, and now the aim of the fatal archer has been directed at the bounding heart of the aspiring youth, and consigned to the silence of the tomb, a dutiful son and a loving brother.

The subject of this notice recently made a tour to the South, hoping that the bracing air of that sunny clime would invigorate his sinking frame, and restore him to health.  But no!  consumption - that fell destroyer of so many of the hope and promise of the land - had marked him for its own.  He returned to Jersey City, but to die among his kindred living there.  We are assured, however, that their loss is his gain - that he is gone to meet his sainted mother, and others who have gone before, in that better world, "Where the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are forever at rest."

"Weep not his untimely end; / If he sunk, 'twas to ascend."

In Preston [Chenango Co., NY] on the 28th inst. Mrs. Sophia L.A. [Jerome], wife of Richard Jerome, aged 26 years, 6 months and 26 days.  The deceased during her short yet severe illness, was led to trust in Christ, as the great physician of souls, and although many earthly friends clustered around to administer to her wants, all could not save her.  She has exchanged the toils and afflictions of this life for the joys of the blessed in heaven.  She requested that the following beautiful verse might be inscribed upon her tombstone:

"Jesus can make a dying bed / Feel soft as downy pillows are. / Whilst on his breast I lean my heard, / And breathe my life out sweetly there."  [Oct. 31, 1849]

Those children are by God withdrawn, / From sorrow, sin and pain; / They now behold the glorious dawn / Of love's eternal reign.

Removed before that age mature, / When man account must give, / Their bright inheritance is sure / With God their souls shall live.

Beloved parents, your transient loss / Is their eternal gain; / Resigned to Jesus, bear your cross, / Nor his kind will arraign!

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Friday, the 7th inst. at the residence of Col. John Randall, in whose service she had lived for more than forty years, of an apoplectic fit, Sally Randall, a colored woman, aged 52 years. [Oct. 3, 1849]

Sally, I would my pen had power / So proudly to transcribe thy name, / That future bards might find it writ / On the enduring rolls of fame.

But no such tribute can I pay / To a devotion rare as thine; / Untiring as a summer's day, / And warm in deepest wintertime.

But down within our hearts enshrined / Sally, thy love is deeply laid; / Sweet memories are with thee entwined, / And by our own thy grave is made.

Yes, Sally, with the little flock / Thou kindly in thy arms hast borne, / Thy dust shall rest, nor be forgot, / Till Death shall call us all his own.

Sweet in thy verdant bed repose, / Thy weary limbs stretch gently there; / Thy drooping lids forever close, / No more to wake to toil or care.

And when the sacramental throng / Thou oft hast mingled humbly in, / Shall sing their Hallelujah song, /Redeemed from every earthly sin.

Thou, all cleansed from thine ebon line, / In glorious raiment, white and fair, / Shall swell the sweet Hosanna too, / And wave thy palms forever there.

Deaths

Suddenly in North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], on Sunday morning, the 26th ult. Almira [Cadogan], wife of John Cadogan, aged 46 y'rs, 6 months and 26 days.  In this bereavement, community and the Church of which the deceased was a member, have sustained an irreparable loss, while the poor, the disconsolate and the needy, have been deprived of a valued benefactor and a constant friend.  She was ever feelingly and sensibly alive to the wants and woes of others, and many are the hearts that have been made to "leap with joy" at the munificence of her benefactions.  But upon her numerous and stricken family the blow falls most heavily.  They have met with a loss which can never be made up.  Here she dwelt in the benignity of her best affections - here her fondest hopes centered, and the lasting welfare of her children was a ruling passion of her life.  [Sept. 5, 1849]

In Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], on the 19th ult. Edward Cornell, M.D., aged 56 years.  Doct. Cornell was born in Guilford in this County [Chenango Co., NY], May 17th, 1793.  With the ordinary education, which was then accessible in the country, he entered upon the study of Medicine at the age of eighteen with Doct. Colby Knapp, of his native town.  His term of four years pupilage was spent with him, the late Doct. Peres Packer, of Oxford, and Doct. Mitchell, of Norwich.  He took a license from the Chenango County Medical Society, in 1814, and in a few months thereafter he settled in the town of Coventry, where for the space of nearly thirty-six years, he has resided, in the faithful discharge of the often arduous and always responsible duties of his profession.  In the vicissitudes incident to a professional life in a new county, Doct. Cornell had his full share, but he grew with the growth, and strengthened with the strength of his adopted town.  As a professional man, Doct. Cornell was prompt, energetic and faithful, all classes can bear testimony to the devotion with which his services were performed, and in all his professional relations, his brethren have many characteristics to commend, and few to condemn.  He was a man of fair native talent and devoted himself exclusively to his profession.  Death has literally overtaken him with his harness on, in the field of his duty, and his loss will be regretted by an extensive circle of friends and patrons.  As a man, he was very much respected.  He represented his native County in the Legislature of the State, in the year 1843, and creditably discharged its duties.  He died at his residence, in Coventry, on the 19th ult, of Dysentery of about two weeks standing, in the 57th year of his age.  He has left a wife and family to mourn his loss, but they know they have an extensive circle of sympathizers in this their sincere bereavement.   P. [Aug. 1, 1849]
