Letter from A.G. Keyes

The following letter is from A.G. Keyes, of the 5th Heavy Artillery, to his wife in this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on hearing of the death of their son, who died in the hospital at Salisbury, N.C.

Harper's Ferry, Mar. 26, 1865:  Dear Wife:  I received two letters from you night before last, informing me of the death of our dear son.  It has completely unmanned me; it is heart aching to me.  You can feel the grief that is upon me.  I have one proud thought, and that is, he never feared or trembled in the face of our country's foes and dealt freeman's blows for the Good Old Flag through the terrible battles of Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, on the 13th of October, and was taken prisoner the 19th.  He was brave and kind. The Lord has seen fit to remove him from us; we must bow to his will in meekness.  O let it draw us nearer to the foot of the Cross. Give our hearts wholly to the Saviour, the Lord's will be done.  It almost breaks this poor heart of mine.  Fernando was very dear to me, we had toiled and suffered in our heavy marches through the burning sun through the Shenandoah Valley, rightly christened the Valley of blood.  It seems like drawing the very life out of me, but I must submit.  I am trying to keep up courage, but my health is too poor for the exposure of a soldier's life.  You must not worry about me, we will trust the Lord that we may meet again, and see our country at peace.

Gen. Lee's Farewell Address

The following is Gen. Lee's farewell address to the army of Northern Virginia:

Headquarters Army Northern Virginia, April 10, 1865

General Order No. 9:  After four years of arduous service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources.  I need not tell the survivors of so many hard fought battles, who have remained steadfast to the last that I have consented to this result from no distrust of them. But holding that valor and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss that would have attended the continuation of the contest, I have determined to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past vigor has endeared them to their countrymen.

By the terms of agreement, officers and men can return to their homes and remain there until exchanged.  You will take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consequences of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend you his blessing and protection.  With an increasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your country and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration of myself, I bid you an affectionate farewell.

R.E. Lee, General

My baby dear, my darling one, -- / Nay, bid not a mother dry her tear. / Its bright blue eye, its little form, / I fain would cherish longer here.

I mourn my loss--my Eddie dear-- / 'Twere wrong to bid the tear to dry / Alas! that thou shouldst leave me here / Alas! that thou so soon must die.

But thou canst sing thy suffering o'er / To which thy flesh was ever heir / With Christ thou it dwell forevermore, / And pain and suffering are never there

Thy little form had suffered much / Of pain, of anguish and distress, / Yet the smile thou gav'st when leaving earth / But portrayed thy future happiness.

Tis hard, oh, how hard, to give thee up. / But God forbids me to complain, / Since I may supplicate His grace, / And meet my child in heaven again.

Death of Henry Van Der Lyn

Died:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], Oct. 1st, Henry Van Der Lyn, Esq., aged 81 years.

Another of the well-known and most respected citizens of this county is no more.  Henry Van Der Lyn, Esq. died at Oxford on Sunday last Oct. 1st, at 1 o'clock P.M., at the advanced age of 81 years.  It is not too much to say of the deceased, that he stood, during the greater part of his active life, if not at the head of the Bar in this section of the State, at least in the front rank of the very few who could justly aspire to that distinguished honor.  He was devoted to his profession, especially in its higher walks, and never wearied of the study and labor which devolve upon all, without exception, who follow it with success.  But with all his devotion to the law, and the industry that he bestowed upon his large and lucrative practice, he was ever social and generous in this intercourse with the world; considerate and tender towards every form of human suffering; and scrupulously mindful of the amenities that belong to a refined and well ordered life. He was a liberal supporter of both the Church and the Academy at Oxford, and of the latter was for many years an active trustee.  During the later portion of his life, after retiring from the practice of his profession, he gave gratuitous and valuable instruction to the law students of the village, and this he did regularly nearly up to the time of his last sickness.

Mr. Van Der Lyn was born at Kingston, N.Y., April 21, 1784.  He was the son of Peter Van Der Lynn, a Surgeon of the Continental army and nephew of John Van Der Lyn, the distinguished artist.  He graduated at Union College in 1802, and was the valedictorian of his class.  He studied law in the City of New York with the late Hon. Ogden Edwards, and after his admission as an attorney, in 1806, moved to Oxford, where he resided to the time of his death.

It is seldom that a citizen of this county has died who was more generally known and esteemed while living, or who carried with him to the grave more of heartfelt love and respect, than Henry Van Der Lyn.

Another Soldier Gone

Died:  Sergeant R.M. Greene, died at Cincinnatus, in the 29th year of his age.

Such is the brief record of the death of another who has given his life for his country. Serving first in the 1st New York Rifles, where he was promoted for his merits to be 1st sergeant, re-enlisted afterwards, and continued in active service, till he entered a hospital, which he left only to return home to die.  In his nearly four years in the army, he was in several battles, and in them, as in camp life, or on the march, he was the brave, disciplined and courageous soldier, ever at his post, and shrinking from no danger.  No longer numbered with the living, he will be cherished among the dead soldiers and heroes of the Republic.

Sherburne News, September 7, 1865

With sincere sorrow we record the death of Myron Warner, the son of Hiram Warner, of this town [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY], who died at the residence of his father, on Wednesday of last week, after an illness of three or four months, at the age of 25 years.  No young man among us had a better title to, or more completely enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him.  His fidelity to the interests of his employer, Mr. S.L. Starr, with whom he had been for three years or more, previous to his illness, his mechanical ingenuity, industry, sobriety, downright sincerity and honesty were subjects of common observation; and the feeling of regret for his death and sympathy with the bereaved friends is universal.  Such qualities as he possessed would have become a more ambitious position in life; but he will be none the less lamented for his modest pretentions and genuine simplicity of character. The Sherburne Fire Co. of which he was a faithful member, attended his funeral in a body.     M.

Hardly had the grave closed over the remains of young Warner, when the sad tidings spread through our village that Frederic Ames, who had been suffering from a painful illness of two or three weeks, had expired at the residence of his father-in-law, Mr. Albert Lobdell. This event, though not unexpected, produced an unusual sensation.  He was but 27 years old, recently married, had been but a few months established in business, and enjoyed, in an eminent degree, the confidence and esteem of our citizens.  In the Autumn of 1861, he enlisted in the 61st Reg. N.Y.S.V.  He was a faithful soldier until, on account of wounds received at the battle of Fair Oaks and disease contracted in the service, he was honorably discharged.  Previous to his enlistment he was, for two years or more, in the employ of S.L. Starr in this village. After his return from the army he established himself in the tin and sheet iron business with every prospect of permanent success.  "Man proposes, but God disposes."  He will be missed from a large circle of friends and from the business of the village.  His death occurred on Friday last and his funeral was very largely attended on Sunday at the Episcopal church. The relatives and friends of the deceased have the unqualified sympathy of our entire community.

Mr. Brownson of the Baptist Church. The illness of the Pastor, Rev. E. Curtis, prevented his fulfilling this engagement which he had previously announced.

Soldier's Letter, Civil War, June 1863

Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, July 1, 1863

Letter from James F. Fitts, 114th NY Infantry Regiment

St. James Hospital, New Orleans, La., June 18, 1863

Walter M. Coney, Esq., Mr. Dear sir:  This letter can hardly reach you in advance of the melancholy news from the 114th, which will carry sorrow to many homes in your district, and it will probably but repeat what you will already have learned from  other sources, that a bloody and ineffectual assault was made upon the enemy's works at Port Hudson, on the morning of Sunday, June 14th, in which the 114th suffered heavily--our mutual friend, Col. Smith, being seriously, probably fatally, wounded.

I Left Port Hudson on the morning of the 16th instant.  Col. Smith was then conscious, but suffering much pain.  A minie ball passed through the dorsal vertebra, and out at the side. The Surgeons then gave him some faint hope, but I hardly think his recovery possible.  I exchanged a few words with him.  He spoke painfully, and with difficulty, but said, "write to Conkey."  He also required Major Morse to write to his family.  His wound was inflicted while at the head of our Brigade, of which he was in charge.

I am unable to speak of him as I could wish, but you will feel the bereavement as deeply as myself.  He would, I am sure, desire you to break the sorrowful intelligence to his family (in case they have not already heard it) and to prepare them for the worst.  May God in his infinite mercy temper the affliction!  He is under the charge of Drs. Benedict and Wagner, and will receive all possible care.

Five companies of the 114th were engaged, B, F, D,E, & G., with the loss of eighty killed and wounded. Better or braver fighting was never seen, but the enemy's advantage in position could not be overcome.  Of forty-four men of my own company (F) who went into action with me, twenty-three were killed or wounded.  We penetrated into the very ditch in front of the Rebel Works, but were held in check by a murderous fire of ball and buckshot.  Trust me, you have ample cause to be proud of your Regiment.  We have received the praise of Gen. Weitzel, and of every officer who saw the charge.  The loss of the army in their assault, will reach fifteen hundred killed and wounded.

Dr. Wagner has forwarded a complete list of all our losses to Judge Clark of Oxford.

Few attempts are to be made, and Port Hudson must eventually fall, but northern blood must run like water.  I sorrow to say it, but our people at home would do well to prepare themselves for bad news.  "The nation's safeguard is the blood of her sons."

Sorrowfully yours,   Jas. F. Fitts

Farewell, dear boy, thy toils are o'er, / Thy transient life is sped; / We'll see thy face on earth no more, / Thou sleep'st among the dead.

No more thy prattling voice we'll hear, / In childish mirth and glee; / But o'er thy grave we'll drop a tear / In sacred memory

No more we'll see those sparkling eyes, / That shone so bright and clear; / Until we meet thee in the skies, / Where naught can cause a tear

No more can sickness, pain or grief / Thy tender form come o'er, / From sorrow, too, thou find'st relief / Upon that blissful shore.

We would not call thy spirit back, / Where life our joys impair, / Thy short-lived path again to track / For thou art happy there.

Then fare three well till we shall meet, / Where parting ne'er will come; / Thy happy spirit then we'll greet / In that eternal home

Dearest Mason, thou hast left us / Thy sweet voice no more we'll hear / Still we listen for thy footsteps / Still we think that thou art near.

In his home sad hearts are bleeding, / And they miss his loving tone; / He, the second loved, and dearest / Far away to heaven has flown.

When the August flowers had faded / And the trees begun to sear / Then they called our darling Mason / to a fairer, brighter sphere

He has gone to sing with angels, / In that happy, happy land, / Where a choir of infant singers / Praise the Lord--a holy band.

Cease, fond parents, cease thy weeping! / He no more will need they care, / For his loving Savior called him, / And you may his glory share.
