Death of Joseph L. McCray

The Chenango American, Greene, NY, January 17, 1867

In the death of this excellent man and worthy citizen, something more should be said than that he died.  His amiable traits of character were such as to endear him to a large circle of friends.  His strict integrity, his noble and manly characteristics, his charitable disposition, made him the beloved of his immediate circle of relatives, and extended their influence over his more extended associations.

His surviving partner and children have sustained an irreparable loss, his associates a worthy examplar in life of all the graces that adorn manhood. It must be said of him, that he was a good husband, a kind father, a good citizen.

His funeral was attended from his late residence in Smithville, on the 12th inst. by a large concourse of citizens.  He was buried with Masonic honors, under the direction of Eastern light lodge, of this village, of which he was a worthy member. There were present members of the fraternity from Norwich, Oxford, Coventry, and Cortland and Broome Counties, and made an imposing display of more than one hundred members, who assembled to pay their respects to departed worth.

R.P. Barnard, of this village, was Marshal, Dr. M.M. Wood, Master of Eastern Light Lidge, was present, and at his request, Geo. W. Baker, of this place, officiated as master in the solemn burial service.  He performed his part with much ability.  Rev. L.B. Hyde, pastor of the Methodist Church in this village, delivered a brief but able funeral discourse.

Everything passed off in admirable order.  It was an occasion that will long be remembered in Smithville.  The masonic burial service was new to many, and seemed to impress all with its solemnity and appropriateness.

Soldier's Letter, Civil War, November 1863

Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, December 9, 1863

Letter from Port Hudson

Port Hudson, La., Nov. 14th 1863

Editors Telegraph:  When I ceased to be connected with the 161st Regt., I came to the conclusion that further communications with your readers through the columns of your paper would be uninteresting.  I, therefore, ceased to write.  But when I came to reflect that many of your readers have near and dear friends who life sleeping in their silent graves around these fortifications and that here flowed like water on the memorable 14th of June, some of the best blood of Chenango County. That many a fond parent's mind and heart are ever turned in sorrow towards Port Hudson as to another sepulcher where lies entombed all they hold nearest and dearest on earth.  I venture to write a few lines at the risk, even, of being voted tiresome and insipid.

It is evening; what a contrast does the surroundings of Port Hudson present now as compared to 3 months ago, when 500 Chenango boys were bivouacked outside of its earthen walls.  The camp fires of 20,000 men which lit up the evening sky, the sharp crack of the rifle, the boom of heavy cannon, the shrieking shells, the shooting star-like meteors which marked the track of the messenger of death, the long line of blazing fires which told where lines of infantry were at work, are no longer seen or heard.  Silent and gloomy darkness enshrouds the deep woods and no sound breaks from them save that of the "boding owl", melancholy whippoorwill.  The rank weeds grow now where then our bivouac fires burned. The fallen trunks and limbs of wounded trees block up the roads and paths made by the Union troops, and the thick, tangled vines cover and conceal the place of our encampments.  They are tenantless now save by the thousand gallant dead who alone keep watch and vigil around us.

Within the change is no less striking and marked.  The white sentinels have disappeared from the ramparts and given place to the Ethiopian.  The rude, but comfortable, log huts have all been torn away, and in their place the light shines through a thousand tents, which, like so many transparencies, illuminate the scenery for miles along the entrenchments, and  from these quarters come to our ears the mingled sounds of the music of the banjo and violin, the patting feet of the simon pure negro dancer, the mournful refrain of a plantation song, the sing song tones of a prayer meeting, and the boisterous laugh of a thousand careless and care fed enfranchised human beings.  The lean, lank, long-haired sons of chivalry are all gone, and their places filled by the crisp-haired sons of Africa.  Where the master held dominion, the slave, made free under military discipline, rules. The earthworks, torn and plowed by a thousand shot and shell, have all been repaired and changed. The engineer who planned and the men who reared would scarcely recognize them now. A new Fort, stronger in every respect than the old is being built within the outer lines and when all the work in process of erection are completed, this will be one of the strongest places in America.

This post is garrisoned by about 6,000 colored troops, mostly new recruits.  They have been drilled but very little being employed a greater portion of the time on fatigue and -?- duties.  They will prove, in my judgement, efficient soldiers if properly officered.  They were reviewed a day or two since by Gen. Wadsworth and Adjutant General Thomas.  27 Regiments of 500 men each have been raised in this state alone.  They are paid seven dollars per month.  Contrary to the expectation of most men, the rate of mortality among them is greater than white soldiers.  If they die as fast in all regiments as they do in those stationed here the question "What shall we be with the negro? will be solved in a few years with us the [..unreadable..] the women in entrenched camps are attached to the regiments as cooks, laundresses, [..unreadable..]  attached to our regiment I have not known a case of sickness, while the average deaths among that number of men has been at least five during the last six weeks, the average sick, twelve or fifteen.  In a sanitary point of view the king of Dahomey displays military judgment in preferring an Amazonian Army.

I have no news to write of the movements of the 19th Army Corps.  No news is allowed to be published in the department of its whereabouts.  All news reaches us from Northern papers.

Yours &c.  S.E.W.

At a meeting of the Norwich Baptist Sabbath School, held April 14, 1867, the following resolutions were adopted:  Resolved, that in the death of our sister, Mrs. Orlando Randall, we have lost an earnest and faithful Teacher, one who loved the Sunday School and its work, and who by her labors and efforts sought to do what she could to lead the young to Christ.

Resolved, that while our ranks have again been broken, we, as Teachers, are admonished that the present is the only sure time we have to work.  The night will come; its shades may be already settling around us, and the time near when the laborers shall be called.

Resolved, that while we mourn the loss of our beloved sister and teacher, we would remember those who mourn the wife, the mother, gone, the light of whose household has gone out, and would pray that He who alone can comfort the mourning ones, may be their refuge and support.

Alanson Pike, son of the late Jarvis K. Pike, formerly of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], died at Whitewater, Wisconsin, the place of his residence, on the 9th of March last.  He made a visit to this, his native town, some two or three years ago, at which time he was in excellent, even robust health.  His age, at the date of his decease was not far from 45.  The Watertown Republican speaks of him as a man of sterling worth; and we judge from the prefix of "Hon." which it attaches to his name, that at some time he had been a member of the legislature of his State.  Mr. Pike leaves many friends here, as well as at his late home, who will long remember him for his gentle disposition and his manly virtues.

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], March 28th, Thomas Milner, Esq., aged 49 years.

Mr. Thomas Milner, a prominent and much respected citizen of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], died at his residence in this place on Thursday last.  He has been greatly out of health for several months, the fears and hopes of his family and friends alternating with the frequent changes in his condition.  Death finally claimed him as his own, and he is removed to the resting place appointed for all the living as well as the already dead.  His funeral was held on Sunday, and was attended by a huge concourse of friends and mourners.  Mr. Milner for most of his active life was engaged in mercantile pursuits, and always maintained the character of an upright and enterprising business man.  In 1848 he was elected Treasurer of the  County, bring the person to hold that office after it was made by the constitution of 1846 elective by the people,  In 1854, he was elected County Clerk.  In both of these positions he discharged all his duties with credit to himself and fidelity to the public.  At the time of his death, he was one of the firm of Milner & Peck, forwarders, of this village.  As a citizen, neighbor, and friend, his loss falls upon our whole community, whose attachment he had won by his genial nature and the generosity of his disposition.  His age was 49, and he leaves a widow and two children.

We regret to learn that Selah Squires, Esq., formerly of Greene [Chenango Co., NY], died suddenly in Washington, on Friday last. We have heard no particulars, but suppose he died of pulmonary disease of which he had been suffering for some years.

In Morris, Otsego Co. [NY], March 2, 1867, Mrs. Melissa E. Babcock, wife of C.B Babcock, and daughter of Ephraim Wood, Esq., aged 35 years.  Our hearts are too full of grief to express the love we bore the deceased. To say she was a true Christian, a devoted and faithful wife and friend, an exemplary daughter, and loving sister, would convey no idea of her merits. There is no idle meaning in the words when we say, to no one would the following lines more fully apply than to our dear friend, M.E.B.:  "None knew her but to love, / None named her but to praise."

In South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], March 1st, 1867, Mr. Alva Babcock, aged 63 years.  He was long a resident of New Berlin, and has left very many friends who mourn his loss.  His true manliness of character, the confidence he inspired in the hearts of all he met, his unswerving fidelity to his friend, endeared him to all.  He died in the full hope of a blessed immortality in the life to come, and of a reuniting with loved ones gone before. Thus, in one day we have lain away two dearly beloved, but ever in our hearts will theirs be the most precious of memories.

A little son of Mr. Gregory, aged about 6 years, came to his death a few days since in a rather strange manner. The little fellow, in some way bruised his toe, from the effects of which lockjaw set in, and after a few days of suffering, death came to his relief.  New Berlin Pioneer.

Fatal Casualty

A melancholy affair occurred at the residence of Mr. Noyes Bosworth, about one mile north of East Pharsalia [Chenango Co., NY], on Tuesday evening of last week, about 10 o'clock, which resulted in the death of Miss Ellen R. Bosworth, aged 17 years, cousin to Mr. B., and daughter of the late Allen Bosworth.  Miss Bosworth was well known in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] having resided here for some time past, and at the time of her death was visiting her friends.

The particulars of this sad affair, as we learn from Mr. N.B. Watkins, of this place, who attended the funeral as undertaker, are as follows:  Mr. Bosworth was engaged in cleansing a bottle of galvanizing solution, which had been standing some ten years, and was a preparation used by him at that time in preparing plates for daguerreotypes.  He poured the contents of the bottle into a tumbler, wishing to see what amount of silver might be deposited in the glass by morning. While so engaged, Miss B. and the wife of Mr. B., who were in an adjoining room, requested him to go to the cellar and bring them some domestic wine.  He placed the tumbler on a shelf in the kitchen, where other glasses were standing, and went for the wine, while Miss B. proceeded to the kitchen, without a light, for a glass from which to drink.  Unfortunately, the fatal glass just left there by Mr. B. was the first she touched, and controlled by some unaccountable impulse, she drank from it.  She instantly inquired of Mrs. B. what she had in that glass, that tasted so singular.  Mr. B. hearing the inquiry, while in the cellar, though of the acids he had left, but the idea did not come to him that the draught would be fatal.  She complained of a sickening sensation in the stomach, and was advised to attempt to relieve herself by vomiting.  Failing in this, she remarked that "It had gone all over her."  These were her last words.  Seating herself by a table, she rested her head upon it, and in a few moments fell to the floor. Efforts were made to restore her to consciousness, but were unsuccessful and Mr. B. hastened for the nearest physician, who arrived when all was over, the unfortunate girl living but about fifteen minutes after swallowing the poison.  Mr. B. tasted from the glass to satisfy himself as to its contents and so powerful were its effects upon him, that it was fortunate a physician was present to administer the proper antidotes. The funeral of the deceased was largely attended on Thursday, at East Pharsalia.

We give the above particulars that our readers may judge for themselves as to the extent of blame to attach to the parties.  It is a very sad affair, and one which no one can deplore more sincerely than does Mr. Bosworth.

Singular Accident

At the conclusion of the funeral services of Mr. James H. Davis, which were held at the residence of Mrs. Hamilton, on Lock Street, on Saturday afternoon last, it was found, from the peculiar construction of the stairs that the coffin could not be carried down them from the room above, where the corpse had lain.  It was suggested to take it through a window to the roof of a verandah in front of the house, and from that point lower it to the ground.  Accordingly, four men removed it to the verandah, and while preparing to lower it, the entire structure gave way and fell with a crash, a distance of some ten feet, carrying with it the occupants, two of whom were somewhat bruised and the head of the coffin shattered.  A lady standing in the door under the verandah was badly bruised, but no bones broken.  No blame can attach to anyone as the premises were examined by a number of those present, before the accident, and were considered safe.
