Joseph Willcox

Chenango American, January 21, 1864

In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 11th inst., Mr. Joseph Willcox, aged 52 years.

This sudden and most afflicting dispensation of God's Providence has taken from an affectionate household their dependence, and from the Church and Society, an esteemed and valued member.  Few were the days of sickness...and he passed away to his blessed reward.  Though for years in poor health, he was beyond his strength faithful and industrious in the tasks of his calling.  He … upright and pure and kind in the relations of society.  We shall miss him, our friend and neighbor who was ever honorable and faithful in the duties and responsibilities of life.  As a Christian he was ever at his post, … to his utmost of his endeavors the pledges of discipleship.  When men so true and good pass away, their places are not easily filled. And in the community like ours we realize the loss that we have all sustained most keenly, when such men sink into the grave. The esteem in which this friend was held was illustrated by the large array of saddened faces that was gathered to the last solemn rites of sepulture.  It seems impossible to realize, so suddenly has this good friend and citizen passed from earth, that he is gone, that we shall not again greet him. The tender sympathies of this whole community are with the stricken and bereaved widow and children.  May He who hath bowed them with this crushing sorrow bind up their wounded hearts with his sustaining consolation.

George Miles

Chenango American, April 14, 1864

Deadly Encounter:  About 2 o'clock on the 6th inst., an affray came off near Boughton's Saloon, at the Depot, at which time George Miles and Christopher Myers were shot.  Miles died in a short time and it is supposed that Myers cannot recover. As near as known, the above mentioned had been drinking during the night and met with James Robinson, formerly of this village, but recently from the South where he had been employed on the military Railroads, and a difficulty coming up, it was decided in a fight, when Miles got whipped; later in the night they again met at the depot and it is supposed that both Miles and Myers beset Robinson, and punished him severely, when Robinson getting away from them and retreating a short distance drew a pistol and shot them both as above. Robinson has been arrested, and will be held for examination--Binghamton Democrat.

Helen A. Briggs

Died December 21, 1927, Norwich, NY

Helen A. Briggs, widow of the late James P. Briggs, died early Wednesday morning at the family home on the South New Berlin road.  Deceased was 83 years of age and had been a life long resident of the Quarter.  Funeral services were held from the home Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, with burial at Mt. Hope cemetery [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].  The Rev. W.A. Ashmore, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated.  Immediate survivors of the late Mrs. Briggs include a daughter, Mildred and a son, Howard, also two grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mary Gertrude Guile

Died October 20, 1938, Plymouth, NY

Mrs. Mary Gertrude Guile, wife of William L. Guile, died at the family home in South Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY] about 9 o'clock Thursday night, aged 63 years. The deceased had been in ill health for a long time.  Mrs. Guile was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Aldrich and Ruphina Barnes Aldrich and was a life long resident of Plymouth. Besides her husband there survive one son, Arthur Guile and three granddaughters, Mrs. Edith Lyons, Mrs. Esther Marvin and Miss Betty Guile of Plymouth. Services are to be held from the late home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Rexford K. Crounse officiating with burial in South Plymouth.

Ryan - Welch

Married October 14, 1940, Norwich, NY

Miss Mary G. Welch, daughter of East Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], and Thomas W. Ryan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Ryan of East Norwich were united in marriage Monday morning at 8 o'clock with a nuptial Mass in St. Paul's church. Rev. Charles M. Coveney, pastor, performed the ceremony.  Miss Anna Ryan, sister of the groom, was maid of honor and James Ryan, brother of the groom, acted as best man.  The ushers were Stephen Flanagan, uncle of the bride, and Robert Ryan, uncle of the groom. The bride wore a royal blue transparent velvet dress with navy blue accessories.  Her corsage was of pink roses.  The maid of honor was dressed in a back transparent velvet dress with black accessories, and wore a corsage of bronze pompons. The mother of the bride wore a navy blue crepe suit trimmed with white, with navy blue accessories, while the mother of the groom wore a black dress trimmed with gold, with navy blue accessories. Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast for the bridal party was held at the Oxford inn.  Immediately after the breakfast Mr. and Mrs. Ryan left for a wedding trip to Washington.  Upon their return they will reside at East Norwich.  Out of town guests were present from Rome, Corning, Cortland, Oxford and Oneida.  pre-nuptial showers were given by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fryover of Sherburne, Mrs. Albert Goodrich of East Norwich and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Atwell and Mr. and Mrs. James Goodrich of East Norwich.

Rutherford - Elliott

Married April 1, 1944, Norwich, NY

At the family residence in Randall avenue [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], Miss Mary Elizabeth Elliott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Elliott, became the bride of Irving Walter Rutherford, lieutenant (j,g,) U.S.N.R., son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rutherford of West Hartford, Conn.  The nuptial service was performed at 8 o'clock by Rev. Dr. G. Edgar Wolfe, pastor of the First congregational church, in the presence of some 70 guests, including relatives and close friends. The bride wore white china brocaded silk, cut princess style with a fingertip veil.  She carried a white prayer book covered with white roses and white ribbon.  Her matron of honor, Mrs. Jean Onyan Manzer of Oxford was gowned in pink marquisette.  She wore a pink and white corsage. the father of the groom served his son as best man. The traditional "Bridal Chorus" from the opera "Lohengrin" by Wagner, was played by Miss Marian Hunt. A reception followed, a feature of which was the cutting of the bride's cake, a three-tiered confection, made by the bride's mother. The bride attended Pennsylvania State college where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority and has recently been associated with the engineering department of the Scintilla Magneto Company at Sidney. The groom was graduated by Mt. Herman prep school and from Pennsylvania State college in 1938 where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.  Before enlisting he was a practicing architect in New Britain, Conn., where he was a member of the Lions Club.  For the past 21 months he has been overseas and is now assigned to Honolulu.  He came east from San Francisco this week after arriving there for the start of an extended leave. Lieut. and Mrs. Rutherford left for a wedding trip to be passed in New York and at West Hartford, Conn.

Mr. & Mrs. Walter R. Greene

25th Wedding Anniversary, May 21, 1930

Saturday, May 21, proved to be a day of happy surprises for Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Greene--it was their twenty-fifth wedding annviersary.  Little did they think anyone had remembered the day until the mail man came, bringing them seventy-seven beautiful greeting cards, which they were enjoying together, when at eight pm., in drove about fifty friends and neighbors who proceeded to help them celebrate the happy event. To say they were surprised, only faintly expresses it.  After greeting the bride and groom, all settled down to an eveniing of pelasure. A fine program had been rpepared, consisting of prayer by Rev. C.H. Skinenr, coronet duets by Albert Crandall and Raymond Sherburne, readings by Mrs. Isbell, Mrs. Skinner and Mrs. Morse, were enjoyed by all.  Mr. Isbell, in his pleasing manner, and in behalf of their friends, congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Greene and presented them with a beautiful silver flower vase, to which they responded, thanking all. Delicious refreshments were served, salad, sandwiches, fruited jello, coffee, white sponge and chocolate cakes, and ice cream.  There were two beautiful bride's cakes with the tiny bride and groom looking on as Mrs. Greene cut and served the cakes. Friends were present from Norwich, Rockdale, South New Berlin and Benington, Vermont.  After registering in the guest book all left for their homes, wishing Walter and Lulu many returns of their wedding day.

Arthur Robert Graves

Norwich Sun, March 13, 1942

After an illness of one year, Arthur Robert Graves died Friday morning at 8:30 at the home of his mother, Mrs. Alice Graves in the town of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]. Born February 17, 1916, he had been in failing health for several months. Besides his mother there survive a sister, Mrs. Ernest Cosens, and a brother, Miles L. Graves, both of this city. The body will rest at the home of his mother until Monday morning.  Funeral services are to be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Breese Funeral Home here.  Rev. R.L. Matthews, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church where Mr. Graves held membership, will officiate. Burial is to be made in the North Norwich cemetery.

Edwin L. Graves

Died August 27, 1929, New Berlin, NY

Edwin L. Graves died Tuesday afternoon at his home in Norwich Quarter [Chenango Co., NY] as the result of a shock Saturday, from which he ever rallied.  Born on December 30, 1846, in the same house in which he died, Mr. Graves had resided there all his life except for a short while when he made his home in Norwich.  On October 20, 1868, he married Malona Thurston of Norwich, and by this marriage he had one son, Merton E. Graves, who died January 19, 1920.  Mrs. Graves died December 24, 1910.  Mr. Graves was a member of the Masons and up until the time of his death was the oldest living member of the Norwich lodge, no. 302, F. and A.M.  He was a prosperous and respected farmer in Norwich Quarter and leaves a large number of friends who will regret to learn of his death.  On August 13, 1912, he married Annis Chapin of Berlin Heights, O., who survives him.  Other survivors include Homer Edwin Graves and Charles Ansen Graves, two great-grandsons; John Ansen Graves and Merton George Graves and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held from the home at Norwich Quarter Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. D.G. DeBoer officiating. Burial will be made in the cemetery at South New Berlin. The Masonic lodge will conduct the services at the grave.

Frank O. Graves

Died April 26, 1931, Norwich, NY

Frank O. Graves passed away on Sunday at 11:50 a.m. at his home in Norwich Quarter [Chenango Co., NY], where he had been a lifelong resident having been born and brought up at the old Graves homestead now known as the Homer E. Graves farm.  Mr. Graves, who was 77 years of age, was the youngest son of Lewis and Roxana Chapin Graves and was a descendant of Phineas Graves, who was one of the earliest settlers of the Quarter.  In March 1888 soon after his marriage to Alice Ketcham, who preceded him in death in 1924, he purchased the farm where he died and together with his devoted family made of it a home never to be forgotten by them or his legion of friends to whom it was also home.  He was not a prominent farmer having been of a quiet retiring disposition, but rather a leading farmer of the type whose every word and deed was an honest and upright example to neighbor and friend.  There was never a task too hard to be undertaken by him and he never was too busy to lend a helping hand where needed.  He was something of an inventor as shown by the many devices designed by him for use on his farm.  Mr. Graves was a member of the Congregational church, the Men's Club of that church, the Farm Bureau and Dairymen's League.  He was secretary and treasurer of the Norwich Quarter Cemetery Association.  He is survived by his three daughters, Mrs. Samuel E. Jones of Syracuse, Mabel E Graves and Fannie I. Graves, who were with him in his home, a son, Arthur W. Graves of Oswego, two grandchildren Arthur E. Jones of Rumford, Maine, and Mrs. Charles W. Lewis of 14 Hayes street. Two sons, Linn O., and Harry L., died some years ago. The funeral will be held from his late home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and the burial which will be private will be in the Quarter cemetery.

Olin S. Grant

Died January 17, 1938, Binghamton, NY

Olin S. Grant of the East River road [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], 40 years of age, died at 5 o'clock Monday morning in the Binghamton state hospital [Broome Co., NY] as the result of an infection following a fracture of the skull sustained nearly a week ago.  Mr. Grant was injured last Tuesday while engaged in repairing a chute in the barn on the Grant farm.  In some manner he fell down the chute, his head striking an iron stanchion in the barn.  He received a fracture of the skull and Dr. Leslie T. Kinney was called to attend him.  His condition was such that it was deemed advisable to take him to the Binghamton hospital last Saturday and despite the best of medical care including the service of a New York specialist, he did not survive.  Mr. Grant was born in the town of Norwich, Aug. 16, 1897, and attended the public schools.  For several years he had been associated with his brother, David Grant, in conducting the Grant farm and dairy, a well known milk establishment.  He was a member of the First Congregational church and the I.O.O.F. and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.  There survive his mother, Mrs. Lillian P. Grant and four brothers, Howard of Cortland, Edwin of Homer, Francis of Williamstown, Mass., and David of Norwich. Funeral services are to be held at the Breese Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon.  Rev. D.G. DeBoer officiating, with interment in Mt. Hope [Norwich].

James Francis Grooms

Died June 30, 1938, Fulton, NY

News of the death of James Francis Grooms at Fulton [Oswego Co. NY], early Friday morning was received in this city.  Mr. Grooms, 53 years of age, was widely known in Norwich where for many years he was identified with the restaurant business.  He was born in Binghamton [Broome Co., NY].  Besides his wife, two children survive, Francis and Catherine, all of this city.  In addition to several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, John of Syracuse, Morris and Edward of Binghamton, and three sisters, Mrs. Frances Barrett, Mrs. Agnes McGuire and Mrs. Theresa Gregory, all of Binghamton, also survive.  Mr. Grooms was a veteran of the World War.  he leaves many friends in this city who will learn with regret of his passing. The body will be brought to this city where services will be held Tuesday.

Harriet L. (Green) Mathewson

Died June 30, 1938, Norwich, NY

Mrs. Harriet L. Green Mathewson, wife of Oscar F. Mathewson, died at the family home, 28 Elm street, at 10:45 Thursday night after a long illness.  The deceased was born July 25, 1877, and had been a resident of this city many years. Funeral services are to be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Breese Funeral Home, with Rev. George B. Callender officiating and burial in Mt. Hope cemetery [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].

Hawley O. Gregory

Died February 22, 1934, Pompey, NY

Hawley O. Gregory, who was engaged in the grocery business in this city for a period of 20 years, died at his home near Cazenovia about 11;30 Thursday night, aged 59 years.  He had been ill about three weeks of bronchitis.  Mr. Gregory first operated a grocery store on Division street [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], where the present Victory Chain store is located.  He later moved his business to North Broad street where the Grand Union now is, and still later operated a grocery in the Eagle hotel block.  Mr. Gregory also conducted a bakery on East Main street for a time, and had been engaged in the bakery and grocery business near Cazenovia recently. There survive his wife and one brother and a large circle of friends who will deeply regret his demise. The body will be brought to Norwich Saturday and taken to the Breese funeral home.  Funeral services are to be held at the Breese funeral home at 2 p.m. Monday, Rev. J.W. Nicholson officiating, and the body placed in the vault at Mt. Hope [Norwich], awaiting burial in the spring.

Jabez Robinson

Chenango American, March 10, 1864

Another aged citizen has been gathered to his fathers--another landmark of early days and of primitive simplicity has been removed.  This melancholy event took place at his late residence in this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], after a brief and painful illness, on Thursday the 25th ult.  Mr. Robinson was born at Lebanon, New London County, Conn., on the 19th of April, 1783.  Born of Revolutionary ancestors, and in the same year in which was consumated the independence of his country and which saw her take her place among the nations of the earth, a recognized power; bred in the stern school of economy which the great struggle had necessitated, imbibing the lesson of integrity, characteristic of early New England, and his youthful mind filled with those sterling tales of patriotism which fell from the lips of the heroes, who had so lately offered their all upon the altar of their country, he was well prepared for the subsequent scenes and trials of life, as a pioneer in a new and sparsely settle country.  He removed from his native place to this county in the year 1808 and settled in Oxford, on the west side of the Chenango river, where, or near the place where his brother Dan H Robinson, Esq., now resides.  In the second great struggle of this then infant country [War of 1812] to preserve and perpetuate the liberties won in the Revolution, he entered the service of his country in the forces raised by his adopted State, and remained therein until the close of the war.  When the arrogance of Britain had been again rebuked, her pride humbled, and the rights claimed by us had been forced from her unwilling rulers, he returned to his home and immediately thereafter removed across the river to the homestead, where for so many years he lived, and where he has so recently fallen, another victim to the insatiable decree, "dust thou art and unto dust shalt thou return."  Mr. Robinson never forgot and was never recreant to the teachings of his childhood and early years.  Integrity marked and controlled his every dealing with his fellow men.  Rectitude and honesty were a part of the religion in which he believed, and which in all things he ever practiced. A generous hospitality of the New England type, ever gave not only to friends and acquaintances a cheerful and hearty welcome to his home, and his fireside, but was also extended to the wayfarer and pilgrim tossed and buffeted on life's varying sea.  He was often in early years the recipient of the favor and confidence of his fellow townsmen in the selection to fill various public trusts, and in November 1934, was elected Sheriff of C. county for the three years commencing January 1st, 1935.  In all the various stations which he was called upon to fill from time to time, he was faithful, deserving and fully adhering to the tenets of his early education.  His patriotism was bounded and defined by no party ties or prejudice engendered by party discipline.  It was wide and long as his country extended in length and breadth, and when a few years since the autocratic claims of an institution, hostile to the form of a government began to be pressed, he sternly and defiantly took his position on the side of his country, where death found him breathing out in his last illness aspirations for the success of his government, and the preservation of that fabric which the year of his birth had seen established.  A devoted and warm hearted friend, a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, an honest man, he has lived the measure of his days, and now sleeps full of years, honored and lamented.--Oxford Times.

Lillian (Pendleton) Grant

Died March 19, 1940, Norwich, NY

Mrs. Lillian Pendleton Grant, widow of Charles H. Grant, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday at the Chenango Memorial Hospital [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] after a brief illness.  Mrs. Grant was born Feb. 21, 1859, the daughter of Peleg and Frances Pendleton and had been a resident of Norwich nearly all her life. She received her education in the Norwich academy, was a member of the Congregational church for 60 years and for many years had been a beloved member of the Willing Workers' Circle of King's Daughters. She is survived by four sons, Howard of Cortland, Edwin of Homer, Francis of Williamstown Mass. and David Grant of Norwich, also nine grandchildren.  A son, Olin Grant, died about two years ago.  Services will be held at the Breese Funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dr. G. Edgar Wolfe officiating.

Clara Nichols Grant

Died December 22, 1937, Cortland, NY

Mrs.  Howard Grant, former resident of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], died at her home, 74 Maple avenue, Cortland, Thursday morning, after a long illness, aged 53 years. The deceased was formerly Clara Nichols, was educated in the Norwich schools and was a teacher in the schools near Norwich for some time.  Her death will be mourned by many friends. There survive the husband, a son, Dana Grant and two daughters, Lillian Grant of Cortland and Miss Dorothy Grant, teacher in the Lake Placid schools.  Funeral services are to be held at the Cortland Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with burial in Cortland.

Kiefer R. Gorham

Norwich Sun, February 22, 1943

Mrs. Kiefer R. Gorham, former resident of this city [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], died Saturday noon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Ferguson in Oneonta [Otsego Co., NY], after an illness extending over a period of two years. She was 69 years old.  Services are to be held at the Bookhout Funeral home in Oneonta at 3 o 'clock Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Louis VanEss officiating.  Committal services are to be held at Mt. Hope chapel in Norwich. Besides the daughter above mentioned she leaves another daughter, Esther Gorham of Oneonta, two brothers, Howard and Reed Smith of Oneonta and two sisters, one living in Middletown and the other in California.

Loren W. Gould

Chenango Telegraph, July 9, 1937

Loren W. Gould, 66, for 45 years an employee of the Boston and Maine railroad as station agent at Mt. Tom Junction, Northampton and Bernardston, Mass., died Monday, June 28, at Greenfield after a several months illness.  Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 30, at the First Methodist church, Northampton, where for many years Mr. Gould served as superintendent of the church school and as a member of the official board, during which time he became an outstanding leader in boys' and young men's work in Hampshire county.  Mr. Gould was born in Preston, N.Y. [Chenango Co.], May 28, 1971.  Following graduation from Oxford academy he taught school a eyar and then went to Northampton, Mass., to enter the employ of the Boston and Maine railroad, retiring from active duty last November, due to ill health. During his stay in Northampton he served as president of the Exchange club and was a member of the Kiwanis Club and at Bernardston was a member of the boy scout committee.  His business, social and fraternal contacts made him one of the most widely known men in the section.  His wife, the former Ella Parsons of East street, whom he married in 1900, died in 1923.  He is survived by a son, Ralph Gould of Scarsdale, N.Y., and a daughter, Mrs. Louis Shumway of Belchertown, Mass. He also leaves a number of relatives in Chenango and Otsego counties, N.Y.

Charles Hanson Goodwin

Died October 2, 1939, Cooperstown, NY

Charles Hanson [Goodwin], infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Goodwin of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], passed away at the Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown [Otsego Co., NY], Monday evening, Oct. 2, following a short illness of acute meningitis.  Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon. Rev. Theodore Hubbard, assisted by Mrs. Hubbard and her sister of New Berlin conducted the services.  Interment was made in the Oxford cemetery [Chenango Co., NY].  The floral offerings, carried by Dorothy Pfeil and Alliene Hoy were many and beautiful.  Those from a distance who were present to attend the funeral services were Mrs. C.P. Hanson and son Arnold of Onalaska, Wisconsin, mother and brother of  Mrs. Goodwin.

Ethel Goodnow

Died February 20, 1936, Potdsam, NY

Potsdam [St. Lawrence Co., NY]:  Transformed into a human torch when her night clothing caught fire as she stood near a stove to get warm, Miss Ethel Goodnow, 37, of Brasher Falls, R.D.1 [St. Lawrence Co., NY], a school teacher, died Thursday night at Potsdam Hospital.  Miss Goodnow, who had been taking care of her mother, who is ill, arose after retiring and went to the kitchen to get warm. As she stood by the kitchen range, the intense heat from the stove ignited her nightgown.  Almost instantly Miss Goodnow became enveloped in flames.  Her father, James Goodnow, hearing her screams, went to the assistance of his daughter.  He pulled the burning nightgown from his daughter and rolled her in blankets to smother the flames.  Miss Goodnow was unconscious when she was removed to the hospital, death occurring about 24 hours later.  Physicians said she suffered major burns over her entire body.  A school teacher, Miss Goodnow remained at home this term so she might aid her mother.

Darwin E. Goodnow

Died August 6, 1926, New Berlin, NY

Darwin E. Goodnow passed away at his home in this village Friday night, August 6, 1926, at about 12 o'clock, after an illness of long duration.  Darwin E. Goodnow was born in the town of Sherburne, Chenango Co., N.Y., April 9, 1848.  He was the son of Foster Goodnow and Mary Lottridge Goodnow.  When he was about two years old they moved from Sherburne to a farm about one mile from Columbus on the road toward the village mentioned above.  He remained at home until grown to manhood.  Mr. Goodnow was married on December 21st, 1870, to Mariette Haight of Morris.  They spent a few years farming in Columbus, then they moved to the town of Morris to a farm on the main highway between Morris and Gilbertsville where they conducted a general business, remaining at this location until the year 1901 when he sold his farm to Dr. Morris and purchased his present home in South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY] the same year. Twenty-five years of his life have been spent on the farm where he died on August 6th, 1926.  One son Henry H. Goodnow was born to these parents and now lives on the Goodnow homestead at South New berlin. The farm was formerly the Jay Sage homestead.  The deceased is survived by his widow, son and wife, four nephews.

Mariette Haight Goodnow

Died November 5, 1930, New Berlin, NY

Mariette Haight was born June 23, 1847, in the town of Laurens [Otsego Co., NY].  She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David J. Haight, life long residents of the town of Morris.  December 21, 1870, she was united in marriage with Darwin E. Goodnow of Columbus, who passed away about four years ago.  Their early married life was spent in Columbus and Morris, moving from the latter place to the Jay Sage place about thirty years ago, where they resided until the time of their death From early youth she led a faithful Christian life and was devoted to her home and family.  Mrs. Goodnow passed away Nov. 5th. She is survived by one son, Henry H. Goodnow of this place.  Her funeral was held at her late home Saturday, November 8th, Rev. D.H. Woodward officiating. She was laid to rest in Riverside cemetery.

Mary A. Greene

Died June 21, 1940, Norwich, NY

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Miss Mary A. Greene, a resident of the Chenango Valley home here for the last six years, died suddenly Friday at the Home.  Thursday night she attended a meeting of the Chenango Valley King's Daughters held at the Home and appeared to be in her usual health.  Her death was a shock to all.  Miss Greene was born in Mt. Upton [Chenango Co., NY]. Oct. 7, 1856, the daughter of Nelson N. and Alexiewna Place Greene. She was a member of the Methodist church.  Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the George J. Devine Funeral home.  The Rev. George B Callender, pastor of the Broad Street Methodist church, will officiate. burial will be made in Evergreen Cemetery at White Store in the family plot.

Edna P. Green

Died February 13, Rockwells Mills, NY  

Mrs. Edna P. Green died at the home of her son, Floyd B. Green, Rockwells Mills, at 10:45 Tuesday morning aged 86 years.  she was the widow of Luzerne Green, Norwich mail carrier for many years.  There survive the son above mentioned, three grandchildren, Llewellyn Green of Norwich, Edna Jane Green and Richard A. Green of Rockwells Mills, also one great-grandchild, Doris Ann Green of Norwich.  Funeral services will be held at the Breese Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday with burial in Mt. Hope [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].

Matie Perry Greene

Died February 22, 1940, Utica, NY

Again this community was saddened when news came that Matie Greene had gone.  All her neighbors and friends were looking forward to her return to her home in the spring, but her Heavenly father knew best.  Mrs. Greene was born in Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], December 1, 1865, daughter of Dennison and RoeWena Barre Perry.\,  coming to Chenango county when a child where her life has been spent.  She was united in marriage to Nelson P. Greene August 1, 1885. To them was born one daughter, Pearl, who has always been a great comfort to her.  Mr. and Mrs. Greene celebrated their golden wedding August 1, 1935 at the home of their daughter, Mrs. L. Burdick.  After Mr. Greene's death July 29, 1939, Mrs. Greene remained in the home she loved so well, for a while; but owing to poor health, she went to the home of her daughter in Utica for the winter months, planning to come back to her home in the spring.  But she failed rapidly and passed away February  22, 1940, at 10:30 p.m.  The death of Mrs. Greene removes a highly respected citizen. She was a member of the fortnightly Study Club for a number of years. Always active in church work until overtaken by poor health. She was a kind friend and neighbor and will be sadly missed by all.  Her only brother, Charles W. Perry, died a few years ago, was a great sorrow to her.  Immediate survivors are the daughter, Mrs. Leon Burdick of Utica, granddaughter, Miss Dorotha Burdick of Amsterdam; a nephew, Dr. Herbert A. Perry, of Medical Lake, Washington; cousins, W.W. Barre, of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Jennie Scannell and Fred Howe, of Tully, N.Y.  Her funeral was held Monday, February 26, 1940, at 2 p.m., from the home in South New Berlin, and was largely attended. Rev. C.H. Skinner, pastor of South New Berlin Baptist church, spoke words of comfort' Albert Almstedt sang two beautiful solos, "Lead Kindly Light" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."  The bearers were her neighbors and friends, Merton Camp, Lewis Robinson, Richard Stevens, Charles Shaw, Lewis Sheff, Edward Hile.  Peacefully she lay in her beautiful bed surrounded by the lovely flowers she loved so well.  Mrs. Greene was tenderly cared for by her daughter and husband; everything being done for her that human hands could do. She will be missed in that home. She was laid to rest beside her husband in Evergreen cemetery, White Store.
