Albert W. Salisbury

Died August 17, 1929, Norwich, NY

Albert W. Salisbury died at the home of his son, Raymond Salisbury, on the Chenango lake road [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] at 5 o'clock this morning, after a lingering illness.  Mr. Salisbury would have been 60 years old Wednesday, August 21.  He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leland Brookins on the Chenango lake road; Mrs. Guy Wright of Unadilla, and one son, Raymond Salisbury; two brothers, Eugene Salisbury of Unadilla, and Charles Salisbury of Greene; one sister, Miss Cora Salisbury of Greene, and nine grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held from the home Tuesday, August 20, at 2 o'clock.  Rev. D.G. DeBoer will officiate, with burial in the Norwich Quarter cemetery.

Anna Maye Salisbury

Died September 24, 1935, Norwich, NY

Illness of only a week terminated Tuesday night at 8:20 in the death of Mrs. Anna Maye Salisbury at her home, 9 Pleasant street [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].  Mrs. Salisbury was 63 years of age and was the widow of Clark G. Salisbury.  Born in Kent, England, she came to this country when a small child, and for the past 22 years had resided in this city, where for 17 years prior to her illness and death she had been employed by the Norwich Pharmacal Company.  Her passing will be learned with regret by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, who will extend their condolences to the bereaved family.  Surviving are a daughter, Lola M. Mundy of Norwich; a son, Alton Salisbury of Sherburne; a brother, Charles Sancett of Syracuse; four grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces.  Funeral services will be held from the Breese funeral home on South Broad street Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with interment in the hillside cemetery in Georgetown [Madison Co., NY].

Joshua Clark, Celinda Winsor & Charles E. Salisbury

Three inmates of the Chenango county welfare home at Preston have passed away within the past two days.  Joshua Clark, aged 91 years, was the first to answer the call of death.  His demise was followed by the passing of Mrs. Celinda Winsor, and early Friday morning Charles E. Salisbury was summoned.

Mr. Clark, who had been an inmate of the home for seven years, formerly resided in Afton [Chenango Co., NY], where funeral services will be held Monday.  Interment will be made at McClure [Broome Co., NY].  He is survived by three sons, Lester of Endicott, Hudson and Jesse of Afton, and one grandson, Roy of Afton.  His death occurred Wednesday night at 9:30 [April 23, 1930].

Mrs. Winsor, who passed away Thursday night about 7 o'clock [April 24, 1930], was only admitted to the home on Monday of this week.  She formerly resided in Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] and is survived by a niece, Mrs. Earl Aldrich of Haynes.  Funeral services will be held at the William Breese parlors Saturday at 1 o'clock, Rev. D.G. DeBoer officiating.

Charles E. Salisbury went to the home last December.  His death occurred at 1 o'clock this morning [April 25, 1860] at the age of 40 years.  He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dwight Salisbury of Greene, and a nephew, Harry Salisbury of Oxford road. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon.

Cora Estella Salisbury

Died May 7, 1935, Norwich, NY

Mrs. Cora Estella Salisbury, wife of Dwight Salisbury, died at her home on the East River road at 12:30 Tuesday noon, aged 64 years. The deceased was born March 28, 1871 in Unadilla [Otsego Co., NY], but had been a resident here for many years. She had been ill about a week.  Surviving besides her husband are four sons, Harry N. Salisbury of Norwich, Maxwell of Palmyra and Erwin ad Emory of Norwich, two daughters, Mrs. Walter Cosens of Norwich and Mrs. Roscoe Kelsey of this city, also three grandchildren, Fay and Ray Cosens of Norwich and Maxwell, Jr., of Palmyra, also a brother, Eugene Salisbury of Unadilla.

Jennie L. Sage

Died May 8, 1927, Honeoye Falls, NY

After a long illness, Jennie L. Sage entered into rest Sunday evening, May 8, 1927, about 6 o'clock, at her home in Honeoye Falls [Monroe Co., NY].  On January 9 she received a bad fall when descending the steps of a store in the above place and her hip was fractured. After weeks of intense pain and suffering she improved somewhat and was able to sit up for short periods.  Then came a series of cerebral hemorrhages and death ultimately followed.  Everything that loving thought could suggest or hands do, was done for her relief and comfort by her niece with whom she lived and her sister, Mrs. O.T. Angell, but without avail. The deceased was a daughter of Nelson Sage and Harriet Greene and was born September 25, 1861, on the old Sage homestead below this village, the farm now owned by Carl Jacobsen.  Her ancestors were among the pioneers in this section in the early days of its settlement. She grew to young womanhood in this community and here spent the larger part of her life.  Mrs. Sage was a teacher of much ability and skill and many years of her younger life was spent in that profession. She was preceptress of the New Berlin High School for a number of years, also taught in the school here. The block on the corner in this village now owned by Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Fanning was the Sage home for many years. Nearly four years ago she moved to Honeoye falls to make her home with her niece, Mrs. Lewis Peck. A large circle of friends and relatives here will sadly miss her frequent visits, her good cheer and sympathetic interest. Hers was a strong personality.  She possessed a keen intellect, a rare courage and hopefulness in the face of many ills, often winning out through sheer grit and patient endurance when others might have given up in despair.  Her cheerfulness was always paramount, and an example long to be remembered by those who knew her. She was a member of the Baptist church in Honeoye Falls, until recently a member in this place, an earnest Christian woman whose love for her Saviour found expression in deeds of kindness to others and in loyal service to the Master. She was a member of the Eastern Star at Sidney and also the Col. Israel Angell Chapter of D.A.R. at New Berlin. Two brothers survive, Jewett P., of Norwich, and Henry N. of this place, and one sister, Mrs. O.T Angell, of Mt. Upton, also two nephews and one niece. The remains were brought to the home of her brother in this place on Tuesday evening, and the funeral held on Wednesday at 10 a.m., from the Baptist church.  In the absence of Rev. M.R. Weaver, Rev. W.A. Ashmore of the First Baptist church in Norwich conducted the service.  Many relatives and friends from out of town were in attendance. The floral tributes were beautiful.  She was laid at rest in the family lot in Riverside cemetery.

Burton E. Sage

Died December 1, 1921, New Berlin, NY

Funeral services for Burton E. Sage will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with burial at South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY].  Mr. Sage died Thursday at Holmesville [Chenango Co., NY], aged 56 years.  He had been a sufferer of Bright's disease for a year.  Mr. Sage was born March 25, 1865, on the farm where he died.  He was the son of George H. and Harriet Trass Sage. February 7, 1894 he married Nettie Greene, who survives him.  He also leaves a son, Ralph Sage of Holmesville; three brothers, George E. Sage and Harvey Sage of Norwich and Daniel Sage of Sidney and two sisters, Mrs. Charles White and Mrs. Charles Littlefair, both of this city, besides many other relatives, the Sage family being one of the earliest to settle in the Unadilla valley and always leading in its business and social life.

Harriet E. Sage

Died July 23, 1932, New Berlin, NY

Funeral services for Mrs. Harriet E. Sage of Holmesville [Chenango Co., NY], who died at her home Saturday, aged 87 years, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late home with interment in South New Berlin.  Mrs. Sage was born in Jamesville [Onondaga Co., NY] Oct. 8, 1844, but had been a resident of this county for a great many years. She had lived on the farm on which she died for 60 years.  She had lived on the farm on which she died for 60 years.  She was a member of the Free Baptist church of Holmesville, and had a wide circle of friends who will mourn her passing. She was united in marriage with George Sage in 1854, and his death occurred in 1909.  Of six children born of that union five are living, one, Bert, having died in 1921. The following survive:  George E. Sage, Mrs. Charles Littlefair and Daniel Sage of Norwich; Mrs. Charles White of Syracuse and Harvey Sage of Smithville Flats.

Jewett P. Sage

Died May 21, 1939, Norwich, NY

Jewett P. Sage, a resident of this city for the past 30 years, died at his home, 40 West Main street about 12:15 Sunday morning, after a brief illness.  Mr. Sage was born in New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], but had resided here a great many years during which time he was employed by the Hickock Coal Company.  He was a member of Norwich lodge of Masons and was held in high regard by many friends. There survive his widow, Mrs. Emma Sage; a brother, Henry Sage of South New Berlin, and a sister, Mrs. Abbie Angell of Mt. Upton, also one niece and two nephews. Services will be held at the late home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev D.G. DeBoer officiating with burial in South New Berlin.  A meeting of the members of Norwich lodge of Masons has been called for 7 o'clock tonight for the purpose of conducting brief services at the Sage home at 7:30 this evening.

Services for J.P. Sage were held from the family home on West Main street at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. D.G DeBoer officiating. The funeral was largely attended and there was a fine floral tribute.  Interment was made in South New Berlin. Acting as bearers were William A. Baldwin, Chas. R. Kroeger, Clinton Corey, Arthur J. Brainer, Chas. H. Hunt and T. M. Weems.

Lizzie Belle (Austin) Sage

South New Berlin Bee, July 12, 1930

Lizzie Belle Sage, who has all her life been a well known and honored resident of the vicinity of South New Berlin, passed away on June 25  at 2:15 a.m., after a long severe illness.  She was the daughter of Webster and Sarah Conde Austin, and was married to Henry Nelson Sage on December 9, 1892.  Mrs. Sage was a member of the Willing Workers Circle of the King's Daughters, and until her illness prevented, was President of the Women's Auxiliary of Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church.  The members recently elected her President Emeritus of the organization.  She has long been interested in Sunday School work, for a long time being in charge of the Primary Department of the Baptist church.  She was one of the organizers of the Fortnightly Study Club of South New Berlin and took an active part in that work for many years. She was  greatly beloved by a wide circle of friends who mourn her loss.  The funeral service was held from her late residence on Saturday, June 28th, and was conducted by Rev. Dr. Henry Hale Gifford, the minister in charge of St. Matthew's Chruch.  er immediate surviving relatives are her husband, Mrs. F.L. Wooster of Binghamton, her sister, and a brother, Millard E Austin of South New Berlin and his children, three nieces ad one nephew.  A large congregation attended the memorial service on Sunday night in St. Matthew's Episcopal church in South new Berlin.

George H. Carpenter

Died April 1, 1933, Gilbertsville, NY

Funeral services for George H. Carpenter, 68, will be held from the late home in Gilbertsville at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.  Mr. Carpenter was a former hotel man in Gilbertsville and well known in this city and county.  His death occurred Saturday afternoon.  Deceased, who was a member of Norwich Commandery, 46, K.T., is survived by his widow.--Sun

Horace l. Chase

Died August 16, 1939, New Berlin, NY

Horace L. Chase, 85, died at his home in Pittsfield [Otsego Co., NY] Wednesday evening.  Mr. Chase was an old member of Norwich Commandery, No. 46, Knights Templar. The funeral of the deceased will be held from the late home Saturday at 2 p.m. standard time. Burial will be in the New Berlin cemetery.  Masonic rites will be conducted at the grave and Norwich Commandery will act as an escort at the funeral.

Alton H. Coy

Died December 5, 1939, Unadilla, NY

Sidney [Delaware Co., NY]:  One man was killed and a second injured seriously shortly after noon today when a large milk truck left the Sidney-Norwich highway at the junction of the Binghamton-Albany road, one mile south of this village.  Alton H. Coy, 30, of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], who was riding with the truck driver, died almost instantly as he was crushed in the truck cab.  Warren Boles, 23, of Delhi, driver of the truck, suffered a compound fracture of the right arm and possible internal injuries.  He is in a semi-conscious condition at the Sidney Hospital.  Trooper Raymond Dunn of state police said that his investigation revealed the truck driver had left the Rockdale Creamery just a short time before and the large truck going east, failed to make the turn onto the Albany-Binghamton road.  It passed through the guardrail and crashed down a steep embankment.  Dr. Prince Danforth, acting coroner, said the death was accidental and there would be no inquest  He is attending Boles at the hospital and said tonight that his exact injuries would not be known until X-rays could be made.  John Carman of Prattsville head of the trucking firm owning the truck, arrived in Sidney tonight ot make an investigation of the accident.  He said he did not know how Coy happened to be a passenger on the truck, since he was not an employee of the company.  

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Funeral services for Alton H. Coy, 30, Smyrna resident, who was killed instantly Tuesday afternoon in a truck accident, will be held in the Smyrna Methodist Chruch at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon.  The Rev. Benjamin Ridgeley will officiate and burial will be made in Sherburne West Hill cemetery [Chenango Co., NY].  Coy died almost instantly when a large Carmen milk truck in which he was riding, left the Sidney-Norwich highway at the junction of the Binghamton-Albany road and overturned. Warren Boles, 23, of Delhi, truck operator, is confined to the Sidney Hospital, under the care of Dr. Prince Danforth.  Coy's body was brought to the funeral home of Benedict and Kehoe at Sherburne.  John Carmen owner of the truck, also investigated the accident. Coy was on his way to Rhode Island and boarded the milk truck at Smyrna just before noon for New York City. The truck conveys milk from the Dairy Union plant at Smyrna to New York. An investigation by Trooper Raymond Dunn of the state police showed that the truck had left the Rockdale Creamery a short time before. The truck was headed east and failed to make the turn onto the Albany-Binghamton road.  It crashed through the guard fail and over a steep embankment.  Coy is married and the father of five children.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Coy, also survive as does a sister, Mrs. Andy Daniels of South New Berlin and an aunt, Mrs. Charles Tuttle of Norwich.

Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman

Died July 12, 1936, Plattsburgh, NY

Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman

Plattsburg [Clinton Co., NY]:  Dr. S. Parkes Cadman, internationally known "radio preacher," died at the Champlain Valley Hospital here yesterday.  The 71-year-old pastor of the Central Congregational Church, Brooklyn, succumbed at 1:22 p.m. to peritonitis which developed from a ruptured appendix.  At his bedside were his daughter, Marie Cadman, who had given her blood in transfusion several days ago in the hope of saving his life; his son, Frederick L. Cadman, and the latter's wife; Dr. Layman G. Barton Jr. who performed an emergency operation last Monday and Dr. George l. Buist, his personal physician.  Dr. Cadman was stricken last Sunday night before a speaking engagement at the Methodist Church at Westport, near here. Despite his suffering, he insisted upon making his address, a plea for world peace, before a congregation of 1,500.  The body left Plattsburgh last night by train for Brooklyn. The funeral will be in the Central Congregational Church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock.  The last pulpit effort of the noted preacher, the plea for peace, was a cause to which he had devoted much of his time.  He was Vice president of the World Alliance for Internal Friendship Through the Churches.

"There's a lot of interesting news in the paper this morning, but before we go into it, we wish to pay tribute to a great man--Dr. S. Parkes Cadman--pastor of Central Congregational church, Brooklyn; former president of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America, and first clergyman to make wide use of the radio.  Dr Cadman died in Plattsburg yesterday at seventy-one,.....

"We were a Cadman fan almost from the first sermon he preached over the radio, and during several years we missed few of his talks.  We were always impressed with the self-abnegation of Dr. Cadman and his effort to impress on his hearers that they shouldn't take themselves too seriously, placing more dependence on God and less upon man."

At the Methodist church at Hartwick, N.Y. [Otsego Co., NY] at 10 o'clock Saturday morning occurred the marriage of Viola C. Doing, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clark B. Doing, to Harold H. Cumber. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. George E. Young, who was formerly pastor at the M.E. church of Plymouth.  Miss Olga Smith and Robert D. McGarity Jr. of Norwich were the attending couple.  After a wedding trip through the northeastern states, Mr. and Mrs. Cumber will reside at 7-1/2  Miller street, Norwich [Chenango Co., NY].

Oper of Rome [Oneida Co., NY], Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, at 3 p.m. at the bride's home.  Rev. Wm. A. Eddy of Clayton, officiating. They were attended by Dora Youngs of Utica, and Norman Oper, of Ava, twin brother of the groom.  After a wedding trip South they will reside in Boonville.  Friends of the bride in South new Berlin extend best wishes.

Prindle of this city, and William Brookins, son of Police Chief Lelan Brookins, were married at Norfolk, Va., October 22, Mr. Brookins is stationed at the naval operating base at Norfolk. A small company of friends witnessed the ceremony.  The attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Follett of Preston.  Mr. and Mrs. Squires will reside at 26 State street.

Crandall - Dunham

Mrs. Minnie Dunham announces the marriage of her daughter, Shirley Ann [Dunham], to Lt. Lewis W. Crandall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis M. Crandall of North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] on December 30, 1943, at Sebring, Florida. The bride wore a dress of wine chiffon velvet with a hat to match and a corsage of white orchids.  Mrs. Charles Dobbins, who was matron of honor, wore a dress of powder blue crepe with a hat to match and a corsage of pink roses.  Lt. Charles Dobbins was best man.  Mrs. Crandall recently returned to Norwich with Lt. Crandall, who was on leave. She plans to rejoin her husband in Florida in the near future.

Anna Cristman

Died January 12, 1939

Mrs. Anna Cristman, aged 73, died at her home in South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY]Thursday morning after a long illness.  Deceased is survived by one son, Walter J. Cristman, and three daughters, Mrs. Marshall Gardner, Mrs. Jay Wightman and Mrs. Lavern Anderson, all of South New Berlin. Funeral services are to be held at the Baptist church in South New Berlin Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. C.H. Skinner officiating with burial in South New Berlin.

Lena A. Curtis

Died November 24, 1941

Mrs. Charles M. Curtis, mother of Rev. Vena Curtis, pastor of Pentecostal Tabernacle in this city [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], died at 7:30 Monday night at the family home on the Chenango lake road, aged 66 years.  In failing health for some time, her death was nevertheless sudden and was attributed to a heart attack. The deceased came here from Erie, Pa., and had lived in Norwich about four years. She was a member of the Pentecostal Tabernacle church and was held in high regard.  Surviving besides her husband, Charles M. Curtis, are two sons, Max and Harold of Erie, Pa., two daughters, Rev. Vena and Miss Clarice Curtis of Norwich and a sister, Mrs. Almeda Wilbur of Brocton, N.Y. Services are to be held at the Breese Funeral Home at 7:30 tonight.  Rev. John Kellner, pastor of the Faith Tabernacle church at Binghamton will officiate.  The body will be taken to Erie Wednesday and funeral services will be held in that city Thursday. Burial will also be made in Erie, Pa.

Charles M. Curtis

Died July 29, 1942

The death of Charles M. Curtis, late of Erie, Pa., occurred at the home of his daughter, Miss Vena Curtis of Hawley's Corners, Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.  Mr. Curtis, who would have been 84 next Sunday, had been ill for some time. Funeral services will be held at the Breese Funeral Home Thursday at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Russell Plants of Oneonta officiating. Burial will be in Erie, Pa. Survivors include Miss Vena Curtis and Miss Clarice Curtis, daughters of the deceased, and two sons, Max and Harold, of Erie, Pa.

Stephen Curtis died May 26th, 1891.  The funeral services were largely attended at the house  May 28th, conducted by Rev. LC. Hayes.  Mr. Curtis was fifty-one years of age and a life resident of this vicinity.  He was one of thirty-seven that were baptized by Rev. A.M. Totman twenty-one years ago and joined the Free Baptist Church of Holmesville of which he remained a member until his death and during all these years, until his health failed him, was our tenor singer.  His name was always down for the support of the ministry and the church expenses, he was the business clerk from his conversion.  If all members were as peaceable as Stephen Curtis there would be no contention in our churches.  His four brothers, Oscar, Joseph, Frank and Edwin, and their wives came to see him the Sunday previous to his death.  He seemed much pleased and knew them all, but never realized much after that.  He leaves a wife and little daughter to mourn the loss of a very kind and indulgent husband and father, and the chruch and community at large deeply mourn the loss of our brother and friend.  His remains were placed in the South New Berlin Cemetery.

Announcement was received here of the death of Mrs. L.M. Curtis at her home in Somerville, N.J.  She was the daughter of Caleb Barre, and spent many years in this community.  She was the last of her family.  Her body was brought here for burial at South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY] Beside her husband, Stephen Curtis.

Word was received last week of the death of Mrs. Lottie Curtis, at Sommerville, N.J.  She was formerly of this place and at White Store [Chenango Co., NY].  She was a member of the Holmesville church, being organist for a good many years; always faithful to her church and always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need. The funeral was held at Somerville and the body shipped to Norwich for burial at South New Berlin beside her late husband, Stephen Curtis.
