George H. Carpenter

Died April 1, 1933, Gilbertsville, NY

Funeral services for George H. Carpenter, 68, will be held from the late home in Gilbertsville at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.  Mr. Carpenter was a former hotel man in Gilbertsville and well known in this city and county.  His death occurred Saturday afternoon.  Deceased, who was a member of Norwich Commandery, 46, K.T., is survived by his widow.--Sun

Horace l. Chase

Died August 16, 1939, New Berlin, NY

Horace L. Chase, 85, died at his home in Pittsfield [Otsego Co., NY] Wednesday evening.  Mr. Chase was an old member of Norwich Commandery, No. 46, Knights Templar. The funeral of the deceased will be held from the late home Saturday at 2 p.m. standard time. Burial will be in the New Berlin cemetery.  Masonic rites will be conducted at the grave and Norwich Commandery will act as an escort at the funeral.

Alton H. Coy

Died December 5, 1939, Unadilla, NY

Sidney [Delaware Co., NY]:  One man was killed and a second injured seriously shortly after noon today when a large milk truck left the Sidney-Norwich highway at the junction of the Binghamton-Albany road, one mile south of this village.  Alton H. Coy, 30, of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], who was riding with the truck driver, died almost instantly as he was crushed in the truck cab.  Warren Boles, 23, of Delhi, driver of the truck, suffered a compound fracture of the right arm and possible internal injuries.  He is in a semi-conscious condition at the Sidney Hospital.  Trooper Raymond Dunn of state police said that his investigation revealed the truck driver had left the Rockdale Creamery just a short time before and the large truck going east, failed to make the turn onto the Albany-Binghamton road.  It passed through the guardrail and crashed down a steep embankment.  Dr. Prince Danforth, acting coroner, said the death was accidental and there would be no inquest  He is attending Boles at the hospital and said tonight that his exact injuries would not be known until X-rays could be made.  John Carman of Prattsville head of the trucking firm owning the truck, arrived in Sidney tonight ot make an investigation of the accident.  He said he did not know how Coy happened to be a passenger on the truck, since he was not an employee of the company.  

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Funeral services for Alton H. Coy, 30, Smyrna resident, who was killed instantly Tuesday afternoon in a truck accident, will be held in the Smyrna Methodist Chruch at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon.  The Rev. Benjamin Ridgeley will officiate and burial will be made in Sherburne West Hill cemetery [Chenango Co., NY].  Coy died almost instantly when a large Carmen milk truck in which he was riding, left the Sidney-Norwich highway at the junction of the Binghamton-Albany road and overturned. Warren Boles, 23, of Delhi, truck operator, is confined to the Sidney Hospital, under the care of Dr. Prince Danforth.  Coy's body was brought to the funeral home of Benedict and Kehoe at Sherburne.  John Carmen owner of the truck, also investigated the accident. Coy was on his way to Rhode Island and boarded the milk truck at Smyrna just before noon for New York City. The truck conveys milk from the Dairy Union plant at Smyrna to New York. An investigation by Trooper Raymond Dunn of the state police showed that the truck had left the Rockdale Creamery a short time before. The truck was headed east and failed to make the turn onto the Albany-Binghamton road.  It crashed through the guard fail and over a steep embankment.  Coy is married and the father of five children.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Coy, also survive as does a sister, Mrs. Andy Daniels of South New Berlin and an aunt, Mrs. Charles Tuttle of Norwich.

Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman

Died July 12, 1936, Plattsburgh, NY

Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman

Plattsburg [Clinton Co., NY]:  Dr. S. Parkes Cadman, internationally known "radio preacher," died at the Champlain Valley Hospital here yesterday.  The 71-year-old pastor of the Central Congregational Church, Brooklyn, succumbed at 1:22 p.m. to peritonitis which developed from a ruptured appendix.  At his bedside were his daughter, Marie Cadman, who had given her blood in transfusion several days ago in the hope of saving his life; his son, Frederick L. Cadman, and the latter's wife; Dr. Layman G. Barton Jr. who performed an emergency operation last Monday and Dr. George l. Buist, his personal physician.  Dr. Cadman was stricken last Sunday night before a speaking engagement at the Methodist Church at Westport, near here. Despite his suffering, he insisted upon making his address, a plea for world peace, before a congregation of 1,500.  The body left Plattsburgh last night by train for Brooklyn. The funeral will be in the Central Congregational Church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock.  The last pulpit effort of the noted preacher, the plea for peace, was a cause to which he had devoted much of his time.  He was Vice president of the World Alliance for Internal Friendship Through the Churches.

"There's a lot of interesting news in the paper this morning, but before we go into it, we wish to pay tribute to a great man--Dr. S. Parkes Cadman--pastor of Central Congregational church, Brooklyn; former president of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America, and first clergyman to make wide use of the radio.  Dr Cadman died in Plattsburg yesterday at seventy-one,.....

"We were a Cadman fan almost from the first sermon he preached over the radio, and during several years we missed few of his talks.  We were always impressed with the self-abnegation of Dr. Cadman and his effort to impress on his hearers that they shouldn't take themselves too seriously, placing more dependence on God and less upon man."
