Emma E. Howard died at the Palmer House [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] on Saturday morning, March 3, 1900, of pneumonia, after an illness of one week.  Miss Howard's home was in Madison, N.Y.  Her occupation was that of cook, in which she was quite distinguished, and it was in this capacity she had recently come to the hotel.  Her age was about 41 years.  Fred B. Howard, a brother of the deceased, came to Norwich Saturday and took the body to Madison on the 4:30 O.&W. train.  The funeral was held in that village Tuesday afternoon.  The relatives named below desire to thank Landlord and Mrs. George W. As peacefully as the babe sleeping upon its mother's breast, and as quietly as the golden sun sinks behind the western hill tops, so the spirit of a dear young girl passed into the realm of heavenly life and joy on Sunday morning, March 4, 1900.  Florence M. Steere, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Steere of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] died at their home on Fair street, aged 13 years, having been born December 17th, 1887.  She had been sick scarcely a week from peritonitis, and although everything that medical effort could summon and loving friends devise was done for the little sufferer, still the Angel of Life immortal called her spirit home. The heart pangs of anguish and loneliness of the parents and brothers at the loss of their loved one, is in a measure assuaged by this fact.  Florence was naturally of a delicate constitution, although her health for the past few months had been much better than for a year previous to that time.  On this account she had been obliged to relinquish her school duties for a long time and had but recently began attending school again. She will be greatly missed by her young associates and those of more mature years who loved her for her kindly disposition and quiet ladylike demeanor.  Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon last at 2 o'clock Rev. On Tuesday, March 26, William R. Breed, one of the oldest and most esteemed residents of this town, died at his home one mile south of this village, aged eighty-three years.  He had been confined to his house for the past two years, during the latter part of which time he was blind, and death came from the infirmities of old age.  Mr. Breed was a son of Dea. Elias Breed, an early resident of Norwich, who settled upon a farm near that since owned by the deceased. William was a lifelong resident of this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], who devoted his life to agricultural pursuits.  He was unassuming in manner, upright and honorable, and a much respected citizen.  He leaves three sons:  George D., of Minneapolis, Minn.; William R., of Chicago; and Horace P., who has been in charge of the homestead for some time past. Two brothers and a sister survive him:  Charles R. Breed, of this village; Samuel S. Breed, of St. Paul, Minn.; and Mrs. John Fryer, of this village.  The funeral will be held from the late residence of the deceased, Thursday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. T.G. Cass officiating. George W. Button:  The sad bereavement that reached us in the last issue of the Union, the death on Sunday the 17th, of this old time resident, was announced.  He had resided here [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] over thirty years, and for nearly twenty had a shoe shop in the basement of the Prindle block, to which he came every morning and which he left every night with the regularity of clock work. We are informed that he has never been out of town but twice in all that time, and never absent from his shop except from illness.  Mr. Button was born in Vermont, at the foot of the Green Mountains, in 1820, and had reached the age of seventy-four.  He was a man well informed, and original in his thinking.  Before he came to Norwich he resided in North Norwich and in Plymouth.  In the latter place he at one time owned a farm, was chorister of the Baptist church, and held several minor town offices.  His last sickness was of short duration.  He met death calmly, bidding his family goodbye and cheering them to the last. The funeral was attended Tuesday afternoon Rev. T.G. Cass officiating, and interment followed in Mt. Hope [Norwich, NY].  Some beautiful flowers were placed upon his casket.  He is survived by his widow and two children, of this village, and a daughter by a former marriage, Mrs. D.W. Smithville [Chenango Co., NY]:  we were shocked and deeply pained yesterday to hear of the sudden death of our neighbor and friend, Mrs. Delos Towslee.  She was near the church in Brisbin, caring for her little granddaughter, Leonie Matteson, while the friends were in the cemetery back of the church, where Mrs. Mary Hollenbeck was being laid to rest, when all at once Leonie gave a scream and when the friends came Mrs. Towslee had breathed her last.  The shock to her husband and daughter can only be imagined, not described. she was taken into James Crandall's house, near by, and after Dr. Burgess pronounced her dead, was removed to her daughter's, Mrs. M. Matteson, where she was viewed by the coroner, and then prepared for burial.  [Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, Mar. 1, 1900]

A special to the Utica Observer, dated March 14 says:  The friends of Mrs. Harriet Medbury were much startled to hear of her sudden death yesterday morning.  Since the death of her husband, some four weeks ago, Mrs. Medbury has been living across the street from her former home with her daughter, Mrs. M.H. Fish.  Part of her furniture was being removed from her home to her daughter's, and she was looking about the rooms, when Mrs. Fish left her for a few moments.  Upon her return she found Mrs. Medbury lying upon her face in the sitting room, dead.  It is thought her death was due to heart disease.  [Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, March 21, 1895]

In the death of William Sutton, whose demise was mentioned in the Sun of Friday, as occurring March 1, 1900, Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] loses one of its best and oldest citizens. A  man whose sterling integrity and upright character was known and admitted by all with whom he came in contact.  Quiet in demeanor, and somewhat slow perhaps in making friends, yet possessed of a nature and personality that held the esteem for all time of those with whom he mingled.  William Sutton was born of Scotch parents in Dunfanehe, Ireland, September 29, 1831, and was therefore in his 69th year.  He came to this county at the age of nineteen with his parents and three brothers, all of whom have passed to spirit life excepting one brother.  Soon after his arrival he came to Norwich, where he found work, and in 1853, he entered the employ of David Maydole in the hammer factory.  He continued therein up to a few months ago, when failing health compelled him to cease work.  Throughout this long period of service, forty-seven years, Mr. Sutton enjoyed the complete confidence and highest respect of those for whom he labored.  He was indeed a master mechanic and understood every detail in the manufacturing of hammers.  He was foreman and inspector in the forging room at the time he left the factory.  He was married in 1854 and is survived by his widow and one daughter, Miss Mary Sutton, both of Norwich. A brother, George, who resides in Minnesota, and a nephew, William H., of Middletown, are the only remaining relatives.  He joined the congregational church of this village in 1863, of which he has ever been a consistent and helpful member.  He has held the office of deacon for many years past. The funeral services were held from the late residence, corner Guernsey and Fair streets, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.  His pastor, Rev. Edwin J. Klock, officiating.  Burial was in Mt. Obituaries & Death Notices (October 7)

McDonough [Chenango Co., NY]: By the death of Mrs. Maria Gault, which occurred on Tuesday inst., the village loses its oldest inhabitant, Mrs. Gault being ninety years and nearly five months old.  The deceased was born in Preston [Chenango Co., NY] in 1804, her maiden name being Andrews; in the early twenties she married Thomas J. Gault, of this town, the couple soon after beginning housekeeping on what is now known as the John C. Skillman place, which farm Mr. Gault did much toward clearing off.  These were in the days when the greater part of this section of the country was underwood, communication between neighbors being kept up by means of roads marked by blazed trees; and the deceased used occasionally to relate various of the experiences of that time to her descendants.  Later on Mr. Gault operated what is now the Burdick stone quarry, finding a market for a considerable share of his output in the city of Binghamton, to which point the stone was conveyed by oxen. Subsequently the couple lived on a farm on the east hill, which has been absorbed in other properties, the house having disappeared, and still later moved into the village, where Mr. Gault for a time operated a sawmill.  About 1850 a move was made to the farm in German, which Mr. Gault occupied until his death in 1857.  Here Mrs. Gault remained until all her children had grown up, conducting the farm with the aid of her sons and daughters.  Later on she rented the farm, but continued to occupy the house.  About ten years ago she removed to this village and made her home with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Sarah Fernalld, where she lived until her death.  Of the twelve children born to Mrs. Gault, five daughters and two sons survive.  Soon after her marriage Mrs. Gault united with the M.E. church in this village, then in process of organization, and had always been one of its most faithful members.  The funeral was held from the church on Friday, Revs. George Pope and A.W. From the Bloomington, Ind. World:  By the divine hand a bright light that lately shone in our midst has been extinguished; a noble soul has been called across the dark river to the unknown shore to deposit its burden of life at the feet of Him who gave it; the mortal body will be returned to the clay from which it sprang and the soul has joined the mystic realms beyond, whose ruler is God.  Wafted on the wings of a mother's prayer a soul has taken its flight, leaving as a farewell token to what is earthly of the man we knew, a heavenly smile to wreathe the face of the dead.

Willis P. Chamberlain, whose illness we have sorrowfully noted in the past few days, passed peacefully away in his room at the home of Frank Bishop, East Sixth street, Saturday night, March 2d, at half past nine o'clock.  Shortly before his death the pain left him and he regained perfect consciousness, and recognized his friends and his mother, and bidding them a last farewell, his face, as if by the touch of a magic hand, was wreathed in a beautiful smile, his eyes looked up and the end was come.  In his brief stay he had gained the esteem and respect of all who knew him.  He was a man born to make friends, his happy disposition winning the love and confidence of those with whom he was associated.  In his death the faculty of the University have lost an efficient instructor and the students under his charge an efficient and practical teacher.

Willis P. Chamberlain was born August 22, 1859 at Norwich, N.Y. [Chenango Co.]; died March 2, 1895, being at the time of his death past thirty-five years old.  When ten years old his family removed to Manhattan, Kan., where they remained for six years.  while at that place he attended Agricultural College for two years. The family then moved to Oakland, Cal., where they have since made their home.  In 1881 he graduated from Hill's Business college in San Francisco.  During the next four years he held the position of Auditor in a San Francisco railroad office.  In 1891 he entered Leland Stanford university, where he studied English for three years. During one year he was editor-in-chief of the Sequoia, the College journal.  He was a newspaper man of wide experience and much ability, having been a regular contributor to New York and San Francisco Journals.  He was also literary critic for the New York Critic, a position requiring high merit and refined judgment.  In September he came to Indiana University to complete his course and to act as instructor in English and journalism.  At the end of the winter term he had completed his credits and was given his graduating certificate.  Always of delicate health, he was unable to withstand the unusually severe weather, and on February 14 he was attacked by the grip, since which time he never left his room. The disease developed into pneumonia, which in turn developed into peritonitis.  All in human skill was done for him by physician, nurse and friends, but his weak constitution could not overcome the disease.  He leaves a father, mother and one brother.  

The funeral service will be held this afternoon and will be in charge of Dr. J.E. Steele, of the M.E. church, of which denomination the mother of deceased was a member.  A short service will be held at the home of Mr. Bishop, for the friends and relatives only, at one o'clock. At two o'clock a short service will be held at the College Avenue M.E. church, to which the public will be welcome. The pall bearers will be chosen from the faculty, the English department and the Phi Psi fraternity, of which he was a member. Obituaries (October 6)

After a lingering illness, John Beagle, an old and respected citizen, died at his residence on Mitchell street, Friday, aged sixty-nine years.  Mr. Beagle was well known to the people of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] and vicinity, having for years been foreman of the bridge carpenters on the Ontario & Western and later on the D.L.&W. road.  Failing health compelled him to accept a less laborious position, and for several months past he acted as flagman at the East Main street crossing of the D.L.&W.  In politics he was a Democrat, and was once elected town Collector of Norwich.  he was unassuming in manner, upright and honorable.  His funeral was held from his late residence, Sunday afternoon.  Rev. Miss Bessie Storer died of consumption, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James A Storer, at Richfield Springs [Otsego co., NY], Sunday evening, March 10th, in the nineteenth year of her age. Early in the winter she spent several weeks with her friend, Mrs. Mary Chase, in this village, during which time, by her gentleness and unselfishness, patience under her affliction, and winning manner, she endeared herself to the circle with whom she became acquainted, whose hearts are saddened by the not unexpected intelligence of her untimely death. Their sympathies go out to the stricken household, whose idol Bessie was.  [Chenango Union, Norwich, NY,, Mar. 14, 1895]

Mrs. C.H. Delevan died at her home in this place last Monday.  Mrs. Delevan had suffered a great deal for some time from a cancer.  She will be missed very much in the church, and in the Sunday school of which she was the Superintendent, and more especially in the home, by the bereaved husband in his declining years, and the son and his family.  She also left two step-daughters, Mrs. E.C. Eaton and Mrs. Rhoda Tennant, and one sister, Mrs. Frank Rogers, of Binghamton.  The funeral was held at the house, Thursday, conducted by Rev. D.D. Brown, her pastor, assisted by Rev. O.L. In the death of Mr. George H. Curtis, which occurred on Tuesday last from inflammation of the brain, McDonough [Chenango Co., NY], loses one of  its most popular citizens, and perhaps its most skilled mechanic.  For about two weeks Mr. Curtis had been confined to the house by an attack of the grip, accompanied by discharges from one ear. From this, however, he seemed to be recovering, and no alarm was felt by his friends as to his condition; but about 10 o'clock on Monday night he complained of intense pain in the head, and later sent for his physician. Between four and five o'clock Tuesday morning he suddenly lost the power of speech, remaining in that condition until he died.  Mr. Curtis was the only son of the late Harvey and Fanny Curtis, his mother having predeceased him by less than a week.  He was born in this village [McDonough], in the house now occupied by Levi Sanford, and except for a winter spent in Florida and temporary absences in pursuance of his calling, had always lived here. About twenty years ago he married Miss Mary Rogers of Greene, who survives him. By trade Mr. Curtis was a carpenter, and was known as a particularly neat and expert workman.  In 1886 he was elected to the office of Town Clerk on the Republican ticket by a majority of 70, at a time when the town was strongly Democratic.  In manners quiet and unassuming, the deceased was an excellent citizen, a kind and obliging neighbor, and one of the most genial of companions.  His death will leave a blank in the community that it will be very hard to fill.  [Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, March 14, 1895]

Mrs. Betsey Brown departed this life at the home of Mrs. Melissa Brown, in Pharsalia [Chenango Co., NY], March 2, 1895, aged 96 years 2 months and 18 days.  She was a daughter of Charles Brown, and was born in Stonington, Ct.  She was adopted by Daniel Baldwin when she was seven years of age, and came from Stonington to East Pharsalia with Daniel Baldwin and family.  When twenty years of age she married Oliver C. Brown, of Pharsalia, and since her marriage has resided in Pharsalia.  She leaves three sons, William L. Brown, of South New Berlin, Noyes E. Brown, of Pharsalia, and John H. Brown of Nebraska, and one daughter, Amelia, who is married and resides in Madison county, and a large number of grandchildren to mourn her departure from an earthly to a heavenly home.  The bereaved family have the sympathy of this community in their bereavement.  In early life she made a profession of religion, and has ever lived the life of a consistent Christian. She well and faithfully performed every duty as wife, mother, neighbor and friend.  Her neighbors and many friends will long cherish her memory.  May the bereaved children follow the example she has set them, and so live that they may meet her in that home where sorrow never comes.  The funeral was held Monday, at her late residence, and the services were conducted by Rev. Unadilla Valley:  Again the death knell has sounded in our quiet valley.  On Thursday afternoon, February 28, the tidings flew from lip to lip:  "Mrs. George Graves is dead."  The husband and wife, who had spent a long and happy life together, were suddenly prostrated by la grippe.  They were ill in the same room. The death angel came, and "one was taken and the other left."  The blow was terrible for the husband, who lies in a very critical condition.  Mr. Trumen Prentice, the son-in-law, is also on the sick list.  All that medical skill or devoted affection could do, was done to ward off the stroke, but availed nothing.  The adopted daughter of Mrs. Truman Prentice was tireless in her devotion, night and day.  The cottage home was crowded with kind friends at the funeral. The sleeper, lying so peacefully among the flowers, looked happier than in life.  The pain and sorrow were gone forever. Rev. Mr. Blair preached one of his comforting sermons, and she was laid in the Mt. Upton cemetery.  Among the friends present from abroad, we notice Mr. Gaylord Graves, from Bainbridge, with his wife and daughter; Prof Graves, from Delhi; Mr. Hall from Unadilla; Mr. Robert Case, of White Store, and Mr. Emory Reynolds and wife, of Binghamton.   [Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, March 7, 1895]

Death Notices (October 4)

Hoyt Wightman, aged forty years, was found dead in bed Sunday morning.  He had complained on Saturday evening of not feeling well, but nothing serious was apprehended.  Physicians decided that he died in a fit.  Deceased was a cousin of Ira Wightman of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY].  His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with Masonic Honors.  Rev. J.S. Southworth, of this village, officiated. [Chenango Union, Feb. 28, 1895]

Died last evening, February 19th, Mrs. Lucretia C. Juliand, at the advanced age of eighty-nine.  Pneumonia severed the cord of her life and removed one of the oldest, most refined and charming ladies of Bainbridge [Chenango Co.., NY], one whose life had always been a charm in her home and a bright factor in society, and a Christian. She was born in Guilford, Conn., June 4th, 1805, and became the wife of Col. Richard W. Juliand in 1822.  Ever since, her home has been in Bainbridge at her late residence, which is a beautiful and historic landmark.  Always identified with the society and church work in the village, she spread an influence, valuable in the same degree that her death is mourned.  Colonel Juliand died fifteen years ago.  In her old age Mrs. Juliand was comforted and cared for by a son, Joseph Juliand, of Bainbridge, and a daughter, Mrs. James Banks, of Chicago, who survive her in sadness over the departure of a loving mother. The funeral is held on Friday at 2:30 P.M. with services in St. Peter's church and burial in the cemetery of the church.  Bainbridge Republican.  [Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, Feb. 28, 1895]

Dr. B.F. Smith died at his home in Mt. Upton [Chenango Co., NY], Friday morning, aged about sixty years. For many years he had been a prominent physician in that place, an esteemed citizen and an upright man.  He had been in failing health for some time, and for two weeks previous to his death his condition was critical.  Although his death was not unexpected, his loss is felt by the community of which he has so long been an honored member.  In politics Dr. Smith was a Democrat, and he for several years represented his town on the Board of Supervisors.  He was a prominent member of the Chenango County Medical Society of which he was President at the time of his death, and enjoyed in a marked degree the confidence and esteem of his fellow members.  He leaves a wife and one daughter. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, and was largely attended, including members of the County Medical Society. Edwin P. Ludington a former resident of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], died at his home in New York city, Saturday, aged forty-four years.  Mr. Ludington was the son of the late James S. Ludington a former well known lumber dealer, and was born in Plymouth this county [Chenango Co., NY] in 1851, where his youth was spent.  He secured his education in Norwich academy. The New York Herald of the 24th gives the following particulars of his death:  "Edwin P. Ludington, a lumber dealer and boss truckman, living at No. 513 West Fourteenth street, where he also had an office, died suddenly yesterday.  He tipped the scales at 398 pounds and stood several inches over six feet in his stockings. The excessive amount of flesh he carried rendered him a victim to heart disease, as well as asthma, and for many years he suffered greatly from these afflictions.  His living apartments were over his office, but yet he ever went up to his bed there during the last three months. The only comfortable position in which he could court slumber was sitting in the office chair, which was built in a special manner for him.  He had been attended for some time by a physician, and it was by the latter's advice that he made his bed in his chair.  It was feared that if he lay on a bed or couch that he might smother, so badly was he afflicted with asthma.  His nights of restless slumber in the office chair were shared by a male relative, so that he might be ready to render prompt assistance to the sufferer.  Ludington's roommate awoke at six o'clock yesterday morning and glanced toward the chair where the lumber dealer was sitting.  He was apparently asleep, but when his companion tried to arouse him the discovery was made that he was dead."  He was a prominent Mason.  He is survived by one brother, James S., of New York, and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie E. Smith of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. Thomas R. Warner, of this town, his wife and child having died some years since. The remains were brought to this place on Tuesday morning and taken to Breese's undertaking rooms, where they remained until afternoon, when they were removed to Mt.
