Kenneth B. Knapp
Afton Enterprise, July 19, 1945
Colchester [Delaware Co., NY]:  Trooper Kenneth B. Knapp, 36, a veteran of Troop C Sidney [Delaware Co., NY] and well known to many people of the community, was killed instantly Tuesday while investigating a domestic quarrel.  As Capt. H.B. Gay, commander of Troop C and inspector Carl Lawson, BCI, of the same troop pieced the case together, Ernest Mills, who later committed suicide, was a man described as an "antagonistic nature," barred his estranged wife, Dorothy, when she appeared at the home to gather up some of her personal belongings and household goods. She told authorities she had left him three weeks ago.  Mrs. Mills called Trooper Knapp in an effort to obtain her goods.  When he arrived at the residence, the door was locked, so Knapp moved around the house.  He peered through a window and saw Mills stretched on the floor.  In the belief that Mills had committed suicide, Knapp accompanied by Mrs. Mills, hastened to the rear of the residence and opened the back door and walked through to the dining room. As Knapp entered the doorway to the living room, a blast hit him squarely in the eye and he slumped to the floor.  While Mrs. Mills was summoning assistance, Mills brushed past her and ran next door to the home of his sister.  He barricaded himself there. While Captain Gay and Inspector Lawson, together with a posse of troopers, were converging on the scene, Mills apparently sat down at a table and wrote some notes, which the captain said contained information as to what he intended to do.  Despite coaxing on the part of the law officers to give himself up, Mills remained obdurate.  Finally as they prepared to break in, he bade his son Jack, 10, goodbye and shot himself in the head.  Captain Gay said Trooper Knapp had been a member of Troop C sixteen years. Trooper Knapp was married and leaves beside his wife, four children, all living in Greene.

Obituaries (July 13)

Howard Partridge
1870 - 1914
A most distressing accident happened about 9 o'clock Thursday morning at the mill of W.R Prouty when Howard Partridge, who was employed as head sawyer, was instantly killed by falling onto the large forty-eight inch saw.  The large saw was being driven by a 20-horse motor and was making about 500 revolutions per minute and the unfortunate man fell striking the saw which all but severed the head and left shoulder form the body.  Just how the accident happened will never be known as fellow workmen were looking away from him for an instant.  Coroner Hayes of Afton, was summoned and after viewing the body ordered its removal and was taken in charge by Undertaker Hastings.  Mr. Partridge was an old sawyer owning and operating a mill about 8 miles below Bainbridge and had only been employed at the Proutey mill since Monday morning and was considered a careful sawyer.  He had just assisted in placing a 14-inch ash log upon the carriage and stepped toward the saw when those who were working with him glanced away for an instant and did not see him fall.  Mr. Partridge was not familiar with the mill which may have been the cause of the accident, although the theory is advanced that he may have suffered an attack of dizziness. The deceased was about 40 years of age and leaves besides a wife, a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Carrington, of Clifton Arizona, and a son, Russell, who lives at home.  Howard Partridge was a man who was liked by all who knew him, a hard worker and a friend to all, and will be greatly missed.

The couple have resided on Pruyn Hill with the mother of the deceased. The funeral services were held from the home Thursday afternoon, April 2nd, and were conducted by Rev. Frank James, pastor of the M.E. Chruch. The singing was in charge of a male quartet, Bentley, Manzer, Wilcox and James.  Many beautiful flowers, the gifts of loving friends, were in evidence. Mrs. Frank A. Lewis
Bainbridge Republican, August 12, 1920
Mrs. Frank A. Lewis of Afton [Chenango Co., NY], who was struck by an automobile while crossing the street in front of her daughter's home in Harpursville, on Thursday morning about 7:30 o'clock, died Friday morning at 1 o'clock as the result of her injuries.  Mrs. Lewis had alighted from the Afton-Binghamton stage and was crossing the street to enter the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gilbert Demeree, when she was struck by a car drive by a Mr. Cole of Binghamton, a traveling salesman. Those who witnessed the accident declared that Mr. Cole was in no way to blame as Mrs. Lewis had stepped directly from behind the stage into the path of the Cole auto without taking the precaution to see if another vehicle was approaching. She was carried into the home of her daughter and her injuries were examined by Dr. Charles S. Butler of Harpursville and Dr. Dodge of Afton.  It was found that she had suffered a broken leg, severe bruises and probably internal injuries.  Mrs. Lewis, who was about 65 years old, failed to rally from the shock, her condition being complicated by the fact that she was just recovering from a serious operation, and she died an hour after midnight.  She is survived by her husband, Frank A. Lewis, a contractor of Afton; six children, Francis Lewis, Mrs. Gilbert Demeree and Thomas Lewis of Harpursville, Fred Lewis of Afton and Mrs. Clarence Hurlburt and Mrs. Harry English of Sidney, and two sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Dawes of Windemere, England, and Mrs. Ben Davis of Philadelphia. The funeral was held at St. Luke's Episcopal church in Harpursville  on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Fred J. Davis officiating. Burial was in Nineveh cemetery [Broome Co., NY].

Mary Gilbert Lyon
Bainbridge Republican, August 12, 1920
Her many friends learn with sincere sorrow of the sudden death of Mrs. Frank Lyon of Chicago, which occurred about three weeks ago.  Mrs. Lyon was the daughter of Don A., and Amelia Gilbert, and was born in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] and lived here until after her marriage to Mr. Lyon. She was a graduate of the Bainbridge academy and a faithful devoted member of the Presbyterian church while a resident of this village.  Mr. Lyon was in business here as a merchant tailor, going from this place to Binghamton and thence to Chicago.  Besides the husband to miss her loving presence, are two daughters and one son; her mother, Mrs. Amelia Gilbert of Albany, and five brothers; Mr. Frank B. Gilbert, deputy commissioner of education for New York state, of Albany, Alonzo of Wilkesbarre, Maurice, Arthur, and the Rev. Charles Gilbert of New York.  Many school friends and associates of her early life still live in Bainbridge and vicinity and remember Mrs. Lyon as a loyal, sympathetic friend, and speak of her with respect and affection.  Mrs. Lyon was actively interested in church and social affairs, a devoted wife and mother and will be greatly  missed at home, at church, and in many circles by true friends who sympathize with the relatives in their great bereavement.

Bainbridge News & Republican, October 25, 1945

Myrtle (Lane) McFarland
Bainbridge News & Republican, October 25, 1945
Sorrow filled the hearts of hundreds of alumni of Williamsville High School when they learned of the death of Mrs. Clarence R. McFarland in Olean Saturday, Oct. 13, 1945. They felt that they had lost a true friend when they lost "Miss Lane."  They knew that even after they left school, Mrs. McFarland had still been vitally interested in them and their welfare--an interest springing from a genuine love for these young people and for her work as a teacher.  Mrs. McFarland was born at Farmersville (Cattaraugus Co., NY), Dec. 28, 1897, the daughter of B.H. and Lelila M. Lane.  She graduated from the Ten Broeck Academy at Franklinville and the New York State Teachers' College at Buffalo, with special training in English, biology and music.  After completing her college work, Mrs. McFarland taught at Hardys croners School, near Rushford. At Bliss, she was preceptress of the school and went from there to the Barker High School.  When she came to the Williamsville High School in September, 1928, Mrs. McFarland became the English teacher in the Junior High School, a position which she held until her resignation in June, 1943.  On Apr. 2, 1943, she married Capt. Clarence R. McFarland at Plattsburg. For the past year, they made their home at Bainbridge.  The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 16 from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Milford Hill at Rushford. The Rev. Paul L. Carpenter, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Bainbridge, and Dr. J.D. Robertson, pastor of the Methodist Church at Rushford, conducted the services. Burial took place in the Hardy Corners Cemetery.  Surviving Mrs. McFarland are her parents, her husband, two sisters, Mrs. Milford W. Hill, of Rushford, and Mrs. Carl E. Anderson, of Olean; and two brothers, Louis V. Lane, of Olean, and Lawrence B. Lane, of Pembroke.  Throughout her life, Mrs. McFarland was interested in music. She took an active part in several musical organizations and was, for years, a member of the choir of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo.  The great influence of a life such as Myrtle Lane McFarland's can never be fully reckoned, because its results are shown in the lives of the hundreds of young people who came under her guidance. They knew her as teacher and friend.

From Amherst Bee, Oct. 18, 1945:  Members of the faculty and her former students were deeply grieved to learn of the death on Saturday evening of Mrs. Clarence R. McFarland in the Olean Hospital, following an operation which was performed several weeks ago.  Mrs. McFarland will be remembered by those who studied under her as Miss Lane, for a number of years the junior High School English teacher.  Her unfailing understanding and efficiency have endeared her to the Williamsville  High School girls and boys during the years of her association with the school.  Two years ago last June, she discontinued her teaching career after her marriage.  Williamsville High School News.

Twas a lovely babe that we buried there,
With her marble cheek and her silken hair,
The beautiful brow of the sleeping child
Spoke a thoughtful brain and spirit mild.
Her beautiful hands together were clasped,
As a spring bouquet they gently grasped.
